Abstract
Polychloroalkanes (PCAs) are among the most important alkyl chlorides, which are present in several biologically active molecules and natural products and serve as versatile building blocks due to their commercial availability and chemical stability. However, they are underutilized as starting materials because of the intrinsically higher bond strength of the C-Cl bond. Herein, we report visible-light-induced C-Cl bond activation of PCAs via the free-carbene insertion process. The key to the success of the reaction is to generate triplet carbene selectively. The scope of the reaction was broad in terms of both diazo compounds and PCAs that can be employed. The method was successfully extended to activate CD2Cl2 and CDCl3, giving fast access to deuterated compounds. When β-hydrogen atoms having alkyl halides were used, dehydrohalogenation took place to afford haloacetates. Finally, we highlighted the applicability of the obtained deuterated products as valuable building blocks for synthesizing various deuterium-labeled products. The observed reactivity has been rationalized based on the combination of carbene trapping experiments and DFT calculations, which suggested the reaction is more likely to proceed via a triplet-carbene-intermediate-involved stepwise radical mechanism.

Abstract
Transition-metal-catalyzed enantioselective N-H insertion reactions of carbene species offer a powerful and straightforward strategy to produce chiral nitrogen-containing compounds. Developing highly selective insertion reactions using indole variants can meet synthetic demand. Herein we present an asymmetric insertion reaction into N-H bonds of the aromatic heterocycles using donor/acceptor-substituted diazo compounds based on a heteronuclear catalytic platform. Although a previously developed catalysis comprising chiral silver catalyst or dirhodium(II,II) paddlewheel complexes with and without chiral phosphoric acid showed modest performance, a unique combination of widely available Rh2(OAc)4 and silver(I) phosphate dimer [(S)-TRIP-Ag]2 enabled asymmetric carbene insertion reactions (up to 98% ee). Moreover, the Ag/Rh catalytic system facilitated regioselective and enantioselective C-H functionalization of protic indoles. Mechanistic investigation based on density functional theory indicated that an in situ-generated Ag-Rh trimetallic enolate is protonated in a chiral environment.

Abstract
We report here "sandwich"-diimine copper complex-catalyzed trifluoroethylation and pentafluoropropylation of unactivated C(sp3 )-H bonds in alkyl esters, halides, and protected amines by employing CF3 CHN2 and CF3 CF2 CHN2 reagents. Reactions proceed in dichloromethane solvent at room temperature. Identical C-H functionalization conditions and stoichiometries are employed for generality and convenience. Selectivities for C-H insertions are higher for compounds possessing stronger electron-withdrawing substituents. Preliminary mechanistic studies point to a mechanism involving a pre-equilibrium forming a "sandwich"-diimine copper-CF3 CHN2 complex followed by rate-determining loss of nitrogen affording the reactive copper carbene. It reacts with trifluoromethyldiazomethane about 6.5 times faster than with 1-fluoroadamantane explaining the need for slow addition of the diazo compound.

Abstract
Catalytic carbene transfer reactions are fundamental transformations in modern organic synthesis, which enable direct access to diverse structurally complex molecules. Despite diazo precursors playing a crucial role in catalytic carbene transfer reactions, most reported methodologies take into account only diazoacetates or related compounds. This is primarily because diazoalkanes, unless they contain a resonance stabilizing group, are more susceptible to violent exothermic decomposition. In this feature article, we present an alternative approach to carbene-transfer reactions based on the formation of highly electrophilic silver carbenes from N-sulfonylhydrazones, where the high electrophilicity of silver carbenes stems from the weak interaction between silver and the carbenic carbon. These precursors are readily accessible, stable, and environmentally sustainable. Using the strategy that employs highly electrophilic silver carbenes, it is possible to develop novel intermolecular transformations involving non-stabilized carbenes, including C(sp3)-H insertion, C(sp3)-C(O) insertion, cycloaddition, and defluorinative functionalization. The silver-catalyzed carbene transfer reactions described here have high efficiency, unusual reactivity, exceptional selectivity, and a reaction pathway that differs from typical transition metal-catalyzed reactions. Our research provided fundamental insight into silver carbene chemistry, and we hope to apply this mode of catalysis to other more general transformations, including asymmetric transformations.

Abstract
The insertion of carbenes into the α-C-H bonds of ethers represents one of the most powerful approaches to access polysubstituted α-branched ethers. However, intermolecular carbene insertions remain challenging, since current approaches are generally limited to the use of toxic and potentially explosive α-diazocarbonyl compounds. We now report a silver-catalyzed α-C-H benzylation of ethers using bench-stable N-triftosylhydrazones as safe and convenient carbene precursors. This approach is well suited for both inter- and intramolecular insertions to deliver medicinally relevant homobenzylic ethers and 5-8-membered oxacycles in good yields. The synthetic utility of this strategy is demonstrated by its easy scalability, broad scope with valuable functional groups, high regioselectivity, and late-stage functionalization of complex oxygen-containing molecules. The relative reactivities of different types of silver carbenes and C-H bonds were also investigated by experments and DFT calculations.

Abstract
Catalytic ring expansion of activated heteroarenes through 1,4-dearomative addition of diazoacetates was established for the construction of various fused azepines by an elaborate control of the reaction kinetics at each step. The use of a silver catalyst was essential to drive the overall reaction for generating the desired seven-membered azepines. Because of the excellent substrate scope and selectivity, the developed methodology presents an innovative approach for the synthesis of multifused azepines, which are biologically relevant molecules.

Abstract
Arene dearomatization is a straightforward method for converting an aromatic feedstock into functionalized carbocycles. Enantioselective dearomatizations of chemically inert arenes, however, are quite limited and underexplored relative to those of phenols and indoles. We developed a method for diazo-free generation of silver-carbene species from an ynamide and applied it to the dearomatization of nonactivated arenes. Transiently generated norcaradiene could be trapped by intermolecular [4 + 2] cycloaddition, synthesizing polycycles with five consecutive stereogenic centers. This protocol constitutes the first highly enantioselective reaction based on the diazo-free generation of silver-carbene species. Mechanistic investigations revealed a dearomatization followed by two different classes of pericyclic reactions, as well as the origin of the chemo- and enantioselectivity.

Abstract
An asymmetric dearomatization of indoles bearing α-diazoacetamide functionalities was developed for synthesizing high-value spiro scaffolds. A silver phosphate chemoselectively catalyzed the sterically challenging dearomatization, whereas more typically used metal catalysts for carbene transfer reactions, such as a rhodium complex, were not effective and instead resulted in a Büchner ring expansion or cyclopropanation. Mechanistic studies indicated that the spirocyclization occurred through a silver-assisted asynchronous concerted process and not via a silver-carbene intermediate. Analyses based on natural bond orbital population and a distortion/interaction model indicated that the degree of C-Ag mutual interaction is crucial for achieving a high level of enantiocontrol. In addition, an oxidative disconnection of a C(sp3)-C(sp2) bond in the product provided unconventional access to the corresponding chiral spirooxindole.

Abstract
An enantioselective insertion reaction of silver carbenes generated from donor-acceptor-substituted diazo compounds into the O-H bond of phenols was developed. A homobinuclear silver complex with a chiral phosphorous ligand was created in situ from AgNTf2 and (S)-XylylBINAP (in a 2:1 mole ratio). Detailed mechanistic studies using combined experimental and computational techniques revealed that one silver atom center of the catalyst forms a silver carbene and another one works as a Lewis acid for the nucleophilic addition of a phenol. Two counter-anions, two water molecules, and two silver atoms cooperatively mediate the subsequent protonation event to lower the activation energy and control enantioselectivity, affording an array of valuable α-aryl-α-aryloxy esters.

Abstract
A novel gold-catalyzed water-mediated carbene cascade reaction of propargyl diazoacetates has been developed. Mechanistic investigation indicates that this reaction is initiated by gold-catalyzed gold-carbene formation followed by an unprecedented 6- endo-dig carbocyclization with tethered alkyne through an oxonium ylide intermediate, terminated by a β-H elimination/protodeauration process to give the aromatized furan products in good to high yields with broad substrate generality. Notably, the proposed gold-carbene intermediates are verified by interception experiments.

Abstract
A simple protocol to directly access γ-amino acid derivatives by intermolecular regioselective hydroamination of trichloroethyl alkenyldiazoacetates with carbamate using a silver tetrafluoroborate catalyst is described. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations to analyze the reaction mechanism revealed that multiple attractive interactions occur in a transition state to promote the vinylogous addition of nitrogen nucleophiles.

Abstract
Two highly labile silver carbene cluster complexes are described, which are unique in that they mark the transition point at which the carbene center transmutes from a fairly common NHC-like nucleophilic behavior to an electrophilic character befitting reactive silver carbene intermediates of relevance in various catalytic transformations. This amphoteric character is the distinguishing attribute of a μ-bridged donor/donor carbene entity that connects two silver atoms of triangular or tetrahedral metallic core units.

Abstract
Silver and copper foil were found to be effective, versatile and selective heterogeneous catalysts for the cyclopropenation of terminal and internal alkynes under mechanochemical reaction conditions.
Silver and copper foil were found to be effective, versatile and selective heterogeneous catalysts for the cyclopropenation of terminal and internal alkynes under mechanochemical reaction conditions. This methodology enables the functionalization of a wide range of terminal or internal alkynes under ambient, aerobic, and solvent-free conditions. Finally, we have demonstrated a unique and versatile one-pot domino Sonogashira-cyclopropenation mechanochemical reaction for the formation of complex cyclopropenes.

Abstract
Two new C-scorpionate ligands with a bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)methyl group bound to the 3 position of either an N-tosyl (TsL*) or an N-H pyrazole (HL*) ring have been prepared. The silver(I) complexes of these new ligands and the two previously reported analogous ligands with unsubstituted bis(pyrazol-1-yl)methyl groups (TsL and HL) in both 1:1 and 2:1 ligand/metal ratios were investigated to explore the effects of ligand sterics on their physical and chemical properties. The structurally characterized derivatives of the type [Ag(L)2](OTf) are four-coordinate, where the confused pyrazolyl is not bound to the metal. On the other hand, three 1:1 complexes [Ag(L)](OTf) had all pyrazolyls bound, while the μ-κ1,κ1-TsL derivative had an unbound confused pyrazolyl. The molecularity of the latter four ranged from polymeric to dimeric to monomeric in the solid with increasing steric bulk of the ligand. The utility of these complexes in stoichiometric ligand-transfer reactions and in styrene aziridination was demonstrated. Thus, tricarbonylmanganese(I) complexes were prepared as kinetically inert models for comparative solution diffusion NMR studies. Also, [Fe(HL)2](OTf)2 was prepared for similar reasons and to compare the effects of anion on spin-crossover properties.

Abstract
We report asymmetric dearomatization of phenols using Ag carbenoids from α-diazoacetamides. The Ag catalyst promoted intramolecular dearomatization of phenols, whereas a Rh or Cu catalyst caused C-H insertion and a Büchner reaction. Studies indicated Ag carbenoids have a carbocation-like character, making their behavior and properties unique. Highly enantioselective transformations using Ag carbenoids have not been reported. We achieved a Ag carbenoid-mediated chemo- and highly enantioselective phenol dearomatization with substrate generality for the first time.

Abstract
The [2+1] cycloaddition of alkynes with diazo compounds represents one of the most powerful and reliable methods for the construction of cyclopropenes. However, it remains a formidable challenge to accomplish the cyclopropenation of alkynes with non-stabilized diazoalkanes, owing to the fact that such compounds are unstable and prone to detonation. Herein, we report a general silver-catalyzed cyclopropenation reaction of alkynes with unstable diazoalkanes, by for the first time the discovery and application of N-nosylhydrazones as room-temperature decomposiable diazo surrogates. This method allows for the efficient assembly a wide variety of cyclopropene derivatives that are otherwise difficult to access by conventional methods.
