Semiconductor surface-induced 1,3-hydrogen shift: the role of covalent vs zwitterionic character

One-Step Direct Fixation of Atmospheric CO2 by Si-H Surface in Solution

The efficient conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into useful chemicals has important practical significance for environmental protection. Until now, direct fixation of atmospheric CO2 needs first extraction from the atmosphere, an energy-intensive process. Silicon (or Si-H surface), Earth-abundant, low-cost and non-toxic, is a promising material for heterogeneous CO2 chemical fixation. Here we report one-step fixing of CO2 directly from the atmosphere to a paraformaldehyde-like polymer by Si-H surface at room temperature. With the assistance of HF, commercial silicon powder was used as a heterogeneous reducing agent, for converting gaseous CO2 to a polymer of fluorine substituted polyoxymethylene and hydroxyl substituted polyoxymethylene alternating copolymer (F-POM). Making use of the Si-H surface toward the fixation of atmospheric gaseous CO2 is a conceptually distinct and commercially interesting strategy for making useful chemicals and environmental protection.

Photodissociation dynamics of enolic 1,2-cyclohexanedione at 266, 248, and 193 nm: mechanism and nascent state product distribution of OH

The photodissociation dynamics of 1,2-cyclohexanedione (CHD), which exists in enolic form in gas phase, is studied using pulsed laser photolysis (LP)-laser induced fluorescence (LIF) "pump-and-probe" technique at room temperature. The nascent state distribution of the OH radical, formed after initial photoexcitation of the molecule to it is (π, π*) and Rydberg states, is determined. The initial (π, π*) and Rydberg states are prepared by excitation with the fourth harmonic output of Nd:YAG (266 nm)/KrF (248 nm) and ArF (193 nm) lasers, respectively. The ro-vibrational distribution of the nascent OH photofragment is measured in collision-free conditions using LIF. The OH fragments are formed in the vibrationally cold state at all the above wavelengths of excitation but differ in rotational state distributions. At 266 nm photolysis, the rotational population of OH shows a curvature in Boltzmann plot, which is fairly described by two types of Boltzmann-like distributions characterized by rotational temperatures of 3100 ± 100 and 900 ± 80 K. However, at 248 nm photolysis, the rotational distribution is described by a single rotational temperature of 950 ± 80 K. The spin-orbit and Λ-doublets ratios of OH fragments formed in the dissociation process are also measured. The average translational energy in the center-of-mass coordinate, partitioned into the photofragment pairs of the OH formation channels, is determined to be 12.5 ± 3.0, 12.7 ± 3.0, and 12.0 ± 3.0 kcal/mol at 266, 248, and 193 nm excitation, respectively. The energy partitioning into various degrees of freedom of products is interpreted with the help of different models, namely, statistical, impulsive, and hybrid models. To understand the nature of the dissociative potential energy surface involved in the OH formation channel, detailed ab initio calculations are performed using configuration interaction-singles (CIS) method. It is proposed that at 266 nm photolysis, the OH fragment is formed from two different excited state structures, one with a strong H bonding, similar to that in the ground state, and another without effective H bonding, whereas, at 248 nm photodissociation, it seems that the OH formation occurs mainly from the excited state, which lacks effective H-bonding. At 193 nm excitation, the initially prepared population in the Rydberg state crosses over to a nearby σ* repulsive state along the C-O bond, from where the dissociation takes place. The exit barrier for the OH dissociation channel is estimated to be 14 kcal/mol. The existence of dynamical constraint due to strong hydrogen bond in the ground state is effectively present in the dissociation process at 266 and somewhat deficient at 248 nm photolysis.

Identifying residues in antigenic determinants by chemical modification

Chemical modification of the side chains of amino acid residues was one of the first methods developed to investigate epitopes in protein antigens. The principle of the method is that alteration of the structure of a key residue of an epitope by a chemical modification will alter reactivity with antibody by affecting either specificity or avidity or both. Chemical modification has the advantage that it can be applied to discontinuous as well as continuous epitopes and may be of value in identifying cryptic epitopes. We consider here the several recent studies that have applied site-specific chemical modification to the identification of epitopes on antigens, including the use of formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde, and acid anhydrides, to produce allergoids where determinants important to reaction with IgE are modified but the ability to elicit an IgG response is retained. It is noteworthy that modification of amino groups with charge reversal appears to be the most useful approach. The approach to the use of site-specific chemical modification as a tool for the study of protein function is discussed, and emphasis is placed on the necessity to (1) validate the specificity of modification and (2) assess potential conformational change that may occur secondary to modification. Finally, a list of chemical reagents used for protein modification is presented, together with properties and references to use.

Formation and characterization of organic monolayers on semiconductor surfaces

Organic-semiconductor interfaces are playing increasingly important roles in fields ranging from electronics to nanotechnology to biosensing. The continuing decrease in microelectronic device feature sizes is raising an especially great interest in understanding how to integrate molecular systems with conventional, inorganic microelectronic materials, particularly silicon. The explosion of interest in the biological sciences has provided further impetus for learning how to integrate biological molecules and systems with microelectronics to form true bioelectronic systems. Organic monolayers present an excellent opportunity for surmounting many of the practical barriers that have hindered the full integration of microelectronics technology with organic and biological systems. Of all the semiconductor materials, silicon and diamond stand out as unique. This review focuses upon the preparation and characterization of organic and biomolecular layers on semiconductor surfaces, with special emphasis on monolayers formed on silicon and diamond.
