Photoinduced Metal-to-Metal Charge Transfer toward Single-Chain Magnet

Optical Phenomena in Molecule-Based Magnetic Materials

Since the last century, we have witnessed the development of molecular magnetism which deals with magnetic materials based on molecular species, i.e., organic radicals and metal complexes. Among them, the broadest attention was devoted to molecule-based ferro-/ferrimagnets, spin transition materials, including those exploring electron transfer, molecular nanomagnets, such as single-molecule magnets (SMMs), molecular qubits, and stimuli-responsive magnetic materials. Their physical properties open the application horizons in sensors, data storage, spintronics, and quantum computation. It was found that various optical phenomena, such as thermochromism, photoswitching of magnetic and optical characteristics, luminescence, nonlinear optical and chiroptical effects, as well as optical responsivity to external stimuli, can be implemented into molecule-based magnetic materials. Moreover, the fruitful interactions of these optical effects with magnetism in molecule-based materials can provide new physical cross-effects and multifunctionality, enriching the applications in optical, electronic, and magnetic devices. This Review aims to show the scope of optical phenomena generated in molecule-based magnetic materials, including the recent advances in such areas as high-temperature photomagnetism, optical thermometry utilizing SMMs, optical addressability of molecular qubits, magneto-chiral dichroism, and opto-magneto-electric multifunctionality. These findings are discussed in the context of the types of optical phenomena accessible for various classes of molecule-based magnetic materials.

Solvation/desolvation induced reversible distortion change and switching between spin crossover and single molecular magnet behaviour in a cobalt(II) complex

Coexistence and switching between spin-crossover (SCO) and single molecular magnet (SMM) behaviours in one single complex may lead to materials that exhibit bi-stable and stimuli sensitive properties in a wide temperature range and under multiple conditions; unfortunately, the conflict and dilemma in the principle of approaching SCO and SMM molecules make it particularly difficult; at low temperature, low spin (LS) SCO molecules possess highly symmetrical geometry and isotropic spins, which are not suitable for SMM behaviour. Herein, we overcome this issue by using a rationally designed Co(II) mononuclear complex [Co(MeOphterpy)2] (ClO4)2 (1; MeOphterpy = 4'-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine), the magnetic properties of which reversibly respond to desolvation and solvation. The solvated structure reinforced a low distortion of the coordination sphere via hydrogen bonding between ligands and methanol molecules, while in the desolvated structure a methoxy group flipping occurred, increasing the distortion of the coordination sphere and stabilising the HS state at low temperature, which exhibited a field-induced slow magnetic relaxation, resulting in a reversible switching between SCO and SMM properties within one molecule.

Modulation of single-chain magnet behaviour in a heterometallic Fe2Co cyanide-bridged 2D sheet

A cyanide-bridged Fe2Co 2D sheet exhibiting electron transfer coupled spin transition (ETCST) with co-existence of magnetic ordering below 50 K is reported. The complex exhibits single-chain magnet behaviour where the uncoordinated water molecules act as an exchange-breaking impurity by allowing only a fraction of the molecule to undergo a spin state change. The paramagnetic centres prevail throughout the chain on desolvation, thereby increasing the number of correlated units in the chain.

Photoinduced large magnetic change at room temperature and radical-quenched spin glass in a cyanide-bridged MnII-FeIII compound

By the coordination assembly of a redox photoactive functional motif and a cyanide-bridged moiety, a cyanide-bridged MnII-FeIII compound with large photoinduced magnetic change at room-temperature due to photoinduced electron transfer was obtanied. This compound also shows unprecedented radical-quenched spin glass in molecule based magnets.

Stimuli-responsive magnetic materials: impact of spin and electronic modulation

Addressing molecular bistability as a function of external stimuli, especially in spin-crossover (SCO) and metal-to-metal electron transfer (MMET) systems, has seen a surge of interest in the field of molecule-based magnetic materials due to their enormous potential in various technological applications such as molecular spintronics, memory and electronic devices, switches, sensors, and many more. The fine-tuning of molecular components allow the design and synthesis of materials with tailored properties for these vast applications. In this Feature Article, we discuss a part of our research work into this broad topic, pertaining to the recent discoveries in the field of switchable molecular magnetic materials based on SCO and MMET systems, along with some historical background of the area and related accomplishments made in recent years.

Syntheses, Structures, and Magnetic Properties of Three Cyano-Bridged FeII-MoIII Single-Molecule Magnets

Three new cyano-bridged FeII-MoIII complexes assembled from the [MoIII(CN)7]4- unit, FeII ions, and three pentadentate N3O2 ligands, namely {[Fe2H3(dapab)2][Mo(CN)6]}n·2H2O·3.5MeCN (1), [Fe(H2dapb)(H2O)][Fe(Hdapb)(H2O)][Mo(CN)6]·4H2O·3MeCN (2), and [Fe(H2dapba)(H2O)]2[Mo(CN)7]·6H2O (3) (H2dapab = 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis(2-aminobenzoylhydrazone), H2dapb = 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis(benzoylhydrazone), H2dapba = 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis(4-aminobenzoylhydrazone)), have been synthesized and characterized. Single-crystal structure analyses suggest that complex 1 contains a one-dimensional (1D) chain structure where two FeII ions are bridged by the in situ generated [MoIII(CN)6]3- unit through two trans-cyanide groups into trinuclear Fe2IIMoIII clusters that are further linked by the amino of the ligand into an infinite chain. Complexes 2 and 3 are cyano-bridged Fe2IIMoIII trinuclear clusters with two FeII ions connected by the [MoIII(CN)6]3- and [MoIII(CN)7]4- units, respectively. Direct current magnetic studies confirmed the ferromagnetic interactions between the cyano-bridged FeII and MoIII centers and significant easy-axis magnetic anisotropy for all three complexes. Furthermore, complexes 1-3 exhibit slow magnetic relaxation under a zero dc field, with relaxation barriers of 42.3, 21.6, and 14.4 K, respectively, making them the first examples of cyano-bridged FeII-MoIII single-molecule magnets.

Thermo- and photo-induced electron transfer in a series of [Fe2Co2] capsules

Recently, a family of [Fe₂Co₂] molecular capsules that display tunable electron transfer-coupled spin transition (ETCST) behavior were reported via a smart approach through Schiff-base condensation of aldehyde-functionalized 2,2-bipyridines (bpy^CHO) and 1,7-heptanediamine (H₂N(CH₂)₇NH₂). Here, three more capsule complexes {[(Tp^R)Fe(CN)₃]₂[Co(bpy^{CN(CH₂)_nNC}bpy)]₂[ClO₄]₂}·n(solvent) (1, Tp^R = Tp*, n = 5, sol = 8DMF; 2, Tp^R = Tp^Me, n = 9, sol = 5MeCN; and 3, Tp^R = Tp*, n = 11, sol = 5MeCN), where Tp* = hydridotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)borate and Tp^Me = hydridotris(3-methylpyrazol-1-yl)borate are reported, demonstrating a successful extension of such an approach with other alkyldiamines of different lengths. Combined X-ray crystallographic, infrared spectroscopic and magnetic studies reveal incomplete electron transfer with either changing temperature or upon light exposure.

Tuning the electron transfer events in a series of cyanide-bridged [Fe2Co2] squares according to different electron donors

It has been recognized that both the ligand fields and intermolecular interactions may greatly impact the electron-transfer-coupled spin transition (ETCST) events in switchable magnetic materials; however, the engineering of these factors within a given system is still challenging. In this article, we chose the 4,4'-substituent 2,2'-bipyridine derivatives as chelating ligands according to their increasing electron-donating strength and incremental potential for forming hydrogen bonds (bpy^CHO,CH₃(L1) < bpy^{CH₂OH,CH₃} (L2) < bpy^{CH₂OH,CH₂OH} (L3)), and prepared three new [Fe₂Co₂] complexes, {[(Tp*)Fe(CN)₃Co(L)₂]₂[ClO₄]₂}·Sol (1, L = L1, Sol = 4MeCN·2H₂O; 2, L = L2, Sol = 3MeCN; 3, L = L3, Sol = 4MeOH; Tp* = hydrotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)borate). X-ray crystallography studies revealed that all the complexes share similar cyanide-bridged [Fe₂Co₂] square compositions except for the different substituted groups of L ligands, which led to the clearly evidenced intercluster hydrogen bonds between the neighbouring hydroxyl groups in 2 and 3. As a result, 1 remained in the paramagnetic [FeIII,LS2CoII,HS2] state over the whole temperature range, while 2 and 3 showed complete ETCST behaviour with the transition temperatures (T_1/2) being 221 and 294 K, respectively.

Magnetic interactions controlled by light in the family of Fe(II)-M(IV) (M = Mo, W, Nb) hybrid organic-inorganic frameworks

Three new hybrid organic-inorganic frameworks employing octacyanidometallates and 4,4'-bypiridine dioxide (4,4'-bpdo) as bridging molecules were prepared and characterized. The three-dimensional coordination frameworks {[Fe^II(μ-4,4'-bpdo)(H₂O)₂]₂[M^IV(CN)₈]·9H₂O}_n (Fe2Mo, Fe2W and Fe2Nb; M = Mo, W and Nb) are composed of cyanido-bridged chains, which are interconnected by the organic linkers. Magnetic measurements for Fe2Nb show a two-step transition to the antiferromagnetic state, which results from the cooperation of antiferromagnetic intra- and inter-chain interactions. Fe2Mo and Fe2W, on the other hand, behave as paramagnets at 2 K because of the diamagnetic character of the corresponding octacyanidometallate(IV) building units. However, after 450 nm light irradiation they show transition to the metastable high spin Mo^IV or W^IV states, respectively, with distinct ferromagnetic intrachain spin interactions, as opposed to the antiferromagnetic ones observed in the Fe2Nb framework.

Light actuated single-chain magnet with magnetic coercivity

A cyanide-bridged {Fe2Co}-based coordination polymer was synthesized. It showed photo-induced slow relaxation of magnetization and a coercive field of 400 Oe.

A single chain magnet based on a 1D polymeric selenite-bridged Mn(iii) complex with an N2O2 donor

A novel molecular magnetic material with the formula of {[Mn2(salen)2(C4H3SSeO2)](ClO4)}n (Complex 1) [salen = N,N′-(ethylene)bis(salicylideneiminato)] was designed, synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically.

Anion-Dependent Electron Transfer in the Cyanide-Bridged [Fe2Co2] Capsules

A family of molecular capsules, {[(Tp*)Fe(CN)₃Co(bpy^{C═N(CH₂)₇N═C}bpy)]₂[X]₂}·sol (1, X = ClO₄, sol = 6DMF; 2, X = PF₆, sol = 6DMF; 3, X = OTf, sol = 6DMF; 4, X = BPh₄, sol = 2DMF; Tp* = hydrotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)borate; bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine), were prepared via the Schiff-base condensation of the aldehyde-substituted bpy (bpy^CHO) and 1,7-diaminoheptane (H₂N(CH₂)₇NH₂). All the complexes contain the same cyanide-bridged cationic square cores ([Fe₂Co₂]²⁺), which are encapsuled by the flexible alkyl chains. Variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction, FT-IR spectra, and magnetic studies reveal the abrupt and complete, thermo- and photo-induced electron-transfer-coupled spin transition for 1-3, while the pure high-spin phase for 4. Such distinct behavior is attributed to the effective long-range cooperative interactions mediated by the intercluster π-π couplings in 1-3, which, however, are significantly blocked in 4 due to the steric effect of interstitial BPh₄^- anions. Furthermore, the shift in the thermally induced transition temperatures of 254 K for 1, 233 K for 2, and 187 K for 3, respectively, is likely correlated to the variable H···O and H···F interactions between the solvent molecules, anions, and the bipyridine ligands of the [Fe₂Co₂] squares, suggesting the significant anion-dependent effect in such a system.

High-temperature electron transfer coupled spin transition (ETCST) with hysteresis in a discrete [Fe2Co2] Prussian blue analogue

A thermoresponsive Fe-Co based discrete Prussian blue analogue (PBA) with the general formula [Fe(Tp)(CN)3]2[Co{en(Bn)py}]2(ClO4)2·4MeOH·4H2O i.e. [1·4MeOH·4H2O] is reported, which discloses a sharp and high temperature ETCST along with a wide hysteresis of 10 K observed for its desolvated complex 1.

Controlling dynamic magnetic properties of coordination clusters via switchable electronic configuration

Large-sized coordination clusters have emerged as a new class of molecular materials in which many metal atoms and organic ligands are integrated to synergize their properties. As dynamic magnetic materials, such a combination of multiple components functioning as responsive units has many advantages over monometallic systems due to the synergy between constituent components. Understanding the nature of dynamic magnetism at an atomic level is crucial for realizing the desired properties, designing responsive molecular nanomagnets, and ultimately unlocking the full potential of these nanomagnets for practical applications. Therefore, this review article highlights the recent development of large-sized coordination clusters with dynamic magnetic properties. These dynamic properties can be associated with spin transition, electron transfer, and valence fluctuation through their switchable electronic configurations. Subsequently, the article also highlights specialized characterization techniques with different timescales for supporting switching mechanisms, chemistry, and properties. Afterward, we present an overview of coordination clusters (such as cyanide-bridged and non-cyanide assemblies) with dynamic magnetic properties, namely, spin transition and electron transfer in magnetically bistable systems and mixed-valence complexes. In particular, the response mechanisms of coordination clusters are highlighted using representative examples with similar transition principles to gain insights into spin state and mixed-valence chemistry. In conclusion, we present possible solutions to challenges related to dynamic magnetic clusters and potential opportunities for a wide range of intelligent next-generation devices.

Crystal structures and magnetic properties of one-dimensional compounds constructed from Mn2(salen)2 building blocks and organic selenite acid ligands

Two new compounds composed of MnIII salen building blocks and organic selenite acid with ClO4− counter anions, namely [Mn2(salen)2(C6H5SeO2)](ClO4)(1) and [Mn2(salen)2(C6H4FSeO2)](ClO4)(2) [salen = N,N′-bis(salicylidene)-ethylenediamine], were synthesized through a one-pot reaction and characterized structurally and magnetically.

Exploring the light-induced dynamics in solvated metallogrid complexes with femtosecond pulses across the electromagnetic spectrum

Oligonuclear complexes of d⁴-d⁷ transition metal ion centers that undergo spin-switching have long been developed for their practical role in molecular electronics. Recently, they also have appeared as promising photochemical reactants demonstrating improved stability. However, the lack of knowledge about their photophysical properties in the solution phase compared to mononuclear complexes is currently hampering their inclusion into advanced light-driven reactions. In the present study, the ultrafast photoinduced dynamics in a solvated [2 × 2] iron(II) metallogrid complex are characterized by combining measurements with transient optical-infrared absorption and x-ray emission spectroscopy on the femtosecond time scale. The analysis is supported by density functional theory calculations. The photocycle can be described in terms of intra-site transitions, where the Fe^II centers in the low-spin state are independently photoexcited. The Franck-Condon state decays via the formation of a vibrationally hot high-spin (HS) state that displays coherent behavior within a few picoseconds and thermalizes within tens of picoseconds to yield a metastable HS state living for several hundreds of nanoseconds. Systematic comparison with the closely related mononuclear complex [Fe(terpy)₂]²⁺ reveals that nuclearity has a profound impact on the photoinduced dynamics. More generally, this work provides guidelines for expanding the integration of oligonuclear complexes into new photoconversion schemes that may be triggered by ultrafast spin-switching.

Two azido-bridged homospin Fe(ii)/Co(ii) coordination polymers featuring single-chain magnet behavior

Two azido-bridged homospin Fe(ii)/Co(ii) coordination polymers [Fe2(Bzp)2(N3)4]n (1) and [Co4(Bzp)4(N3)8·(MeOH)2]n (2) (bzp = 2-benzoylpyridine) are prepared, which consist of one-dimensional neutral chains with pure EO-azido (μ2-1,1-N3) bridges. Magnetically, both 1 and 2 exhibit considerable intrachain ferromagnetic interactions which benefit from the EO-azido bridging mode, leading to typical single-chain magnet (SCM) behavior under both the "infinite-size" and "finite-size" regime and pronounced hysteresis loops. As far as the bridging network is concerned, complex 1 represents not only a rare example of homospin Fe(ii)-based SCMs but also the first Fe(ii) chain compound with pure EO-azido bridges.

Chameleonic layered metal-organic frameworks with variable charge-ordered states triggered by temperature and guest molecules

Molecular materials whose electronic states are multiply varied depending on external stimuli are among the most promising targets for the development of multiply accessible molecular switches. Here, we report a honeycomb layer composed of tetraoxolene-bridged iron (Fe) subunits whose charge-ordered states are multiply variable via thermal treatments and solvation/desolvation with the crystallinity intact. The compound is (NPr4)2[Fe2(Cl2An)3] (1-d; NPr4 + = tetra-n-propylammonium; Cl2An2- = 2,5-dichloro-3,6-dihydroxo-1,4-benzoquinonate), which possesses three charge-ordered states: a low-temperature (LT) phase [(Fe3+)2(Cl2An2-)(Cl2An˙3-)2]2-; an intermediate (IM) phase [(Fe2.5+)2(Cl2An2-)(Cl2An2.5-)2]2-; and a high-temperature (HT) phase [(Fe2+)2(Cl2An2-)3]2- that varies according to temperature. In addition, the LT phase of 1-d is reversibly changeable to another IM phase in its solvated compound 1 via a solvation/desolvation process at room temperature. This example demonstrates a new multiple-switching system based on electron transfer and host-guest chemistry in a charge-flexible metal-organic framework.

Manipulating On/Off Single-Molecule Magnet Behavior in a Dy(III)-Based Photochromic Complex

Exploitation of room temperature (RT) photochromism and photomagnetism to induce single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior has potential applications toward optical switches and magnetic memories, and remains a tremendous challenge in the development of new bulk magnets. Herein, a series of chain complexes [Ln₃(H-HEDP)₃(H₂-HEDP)₃]·2H₃-TPT·H₄-HEDP·10H₂O (QDU-1; Ln = Dy (QDU-1(Dy)), Gd (QDU-1(Gd)), and Y (QDU-1(Y)); HEDP = hydroxyethylidene diphosphonate; TPT = 2,4,6-tri(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine) were synthesized by solvothermal reactions. All the compounds exhibited reversible photochromic and photomagnetic behaviors via UV light irradiation at RT, induced by the photogenerated radicals via a photoinduced electron transfer (PET) mechanism. More importantly, the PET process induced significant variations in magnetic interactions for the Dy(III) congener. Strong ferromagnetic coupling with remarkably slow magnetic relaxation without applied dc fields was observed between Dy^III ions and photogenerated O^• radicals, showing SMM behavior after RT illumination. For the first time, we observed the reversible RT photochromism and photomagnetism in the lanthanide-based materials. This work realized the radicals-actuated on/off SMM behavior via RT light irradiation, providing a new strategy for constructing the light-induced SMMs.

Tuning the magnetization dynamics of TbIII-based single-chain magnets through substitution on the nitronyl nitroxide radical

Two one-dimensional nitronyl nitroxide radical (NITR)-bridged lanthanide chain compounds, namely [Tb(hfac)₃(NIT-4-ThienPh)]_n (1) and [Tb(hfac)₃(NIT-5-ThienPh)]_n (2), where hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate, NIT-4-ThienPh = 2-(4'-phenyl-2'-thienyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-imidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide, and NIT-5-ThienPh = 2-(5'-phenyl-2'-thienyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-imidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide, were obtained with different NITRs. Alternating-current magnetic susceptibility studies show that both the compounds are single-chain magnets, while a minor change of the site of the phenyl substituent on the NITR significantly influences the magnetization dynamics. The effective magnetization reversal barrier of 1 (53 cm^-1) is more than two times higher than that of 2 (20 cm^-1) and the coercive field of 1 is also much higher than that of 2 because of minor changes in the local coordination symmetry of the Tb^III centers and the magnetic interactions between the spin carriers along the chain induced by substitution on the radical ligand.

Manipulating Spin Transition To Achieve Switchable Multifunctions

The spin transition of metal ions involves interconversion between electron configurations exhibiting considerably different functions and plays a substantial role in the chemical, physical, and biological fields. The photoinduced spin transition offers a promising approach to tune various physical properties with high spatial and temporal resolutions for producing smart multifunctional materials not only to explore their basic science but also to satisfy the demands of the next-generation photoswitchable-molecule-based devices. Therefore, it is attracting considerable interest to utilize photoinduced spin transition to simultaneously tune multifunctions. However, two issues are challenging in obtaining reversible and swift manipulation of functions: (1) the interconversion between different electron configurations of photoresponsive units should be reversibly switched via photoinduced spin transition; (2) effective coupling should be built between the photoresponsive and functional units to produce photoswitchable functions utilizing photoinduced spin transition. In this Account, we will review our recent advances in the usage of spin transition of metal ions as actuators for tuning the magnetic, dielectric, fluorescence, and mechanical properties, wherein the role of a photoswitchable spin transition is highlighted. We mainly focus on the study of two spin-transition categories, including spin-crossover (SCO) of one metal ion and metal-to-metal charge transfer (MMCT). Initially, we will describe a strategy for developing photoinduced reversible SCO and MMCT. The role of flexible intermolecular interactions, in particular, π···π interactions, is discussed with respect to a photoinduced reversible MMCT. Then, the SCO and MMCT units were assembled using metallocyanate building blocks to form a chain, wherein the spin states, anisotropy, and magnetic coupling interactions can be photoswitched to tune the single-chain magnet behavior. Besides magnetic properties, the photoinduced spin transition that is associated with the concomitant changing of charge distribution, bond lengths, and absorption spectra can be utilized to tune the multifunctions. Therefore, the transfer of an electron from a central cobalt site to one of the two iron sites in linear trinuclear Fe₂Co compounds resulted in the transformation of a centrosymmetric nonpolar molecule into an asymmetric polar molecule, and the molecular electric dipole and dielectric properties can be reversibly switched. Moreover, the spin transition usually involved significant expansion or contraction of the coordination sphere of metal ions because of the population/depopulation of the antibonding e_g orbitals. Therefore, colossal positive and negative thermal expansion behaviors were achieved in a layered compound by manipulating the spin-transition process and the rotation of the functional units, thereby providing a strategy for synthesizing phototunable nanomotors. Photoinduced spin transition can also be used to modulate the fluorescence properties by controlling the energy transfer between the fluorescent ligands and the metal sites showing SCO. Finally, we will provide a perspective and detail the remaining challenges that are associated with this research area. We believe that an increasing number of fascinating photoswitchable SCO and MMCT systems will emerge in the near future and that the materials exhibiting various properties and functions that can be manipulated using photoinduced spin transition will provide novel opportunities for the development of smart multifunctional materials and devices.

Thermally Induced Valence Tautomeric Transition in a Two-Dimensional Fe-Tetraoxolene Honeycomb Network

A novel tetraoxolene-bridged Fe two-dimensional honeycomb layered compound, (NPr₄ )₂ [Fe₂ (Cl₂ An)₃ ] ⋅2 (acetone)⋅H₂ O (1), where Cl₂ An^n- =2,5-dichloro-3,6-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinonate and NPr₄⁺ =tetrapropylammonium cation, has been synthesized. 1 revealed a thermally induced valence tautomeric transition at T_1/2 =236 K (cooling)/237 K (heating) between Fe^m+ (m=2 or 3) and Cl₂ An^n- (n=2 or 3) that induced valence modulations between [Fe^II_HS Fe^III_HS (Cl₂ An^2- )₂ (Cl₂ An^.3- )]^2- at T>T_1/2 and [Fe^III_HS Fe^III_HS (Cl₂ An^2- )(Cl₂ An^.3- )₂ ]^2- at T<T_1/2 . Even in a two-dimensional network structure, the low-temperature phase [Fe^III_HS Fe^III_HS (Cl₂ An^2- )(Cl₂ An^.3- )₂ ]^2- valence set can be regarded as a magnetic chain-knit network, where ferrimagnetic Δ and Λ chains of [Fe^III_HS (Cl₂ An^.3- )]_∞ are alternately linked by the diamagnetic Cl₂ An^2- . This results in a slow magnetization behavior attributed to the structure acting as a single-chain magnet at lower temperatures.

Dynamic molecular crystals with switchable physical properties

The development of molecular materials whose physical properties can be controlled by external stimuli - such as light, electric field, temperature, and pressure - has recently attracted much attention owing to their potential applications in molecular devices. There are a number of ways to alter the physical properties of crystalline materials. These include the modulation of the spin and redox states of the crystal's components, or the incorporation within the crystalline lattice of tunable molecules that exhibit stimuli-induced changes in their molecular structure. A switching behaviour can also be induced by changing the molecular orientation of the crystal's components, even in cases where the overall molecular structure is not affected. Controlling intermolecular interactions within a molecular material is also an effective tool to modulate its physical properties. This Review discusses recent advances in the development of such stimuli-responsive, switchable crystalline compounds - referred to here as dynamic molecular crystals - and suggests how different approaches can serve to prepare functional materials.

MnIII-FeIII Heterometallic Compounds within Hydrogen-Bonded Supramolecular Networks Promoted by an [Fe(CN)5(CNH)]2- Building Block: Structural and Magnetic Properties

The reaction of [Fe(CN)₆]^3- and [Mn(acacen)]⁺ (H₂acacen = N, N'-bis(acetylacetone)ethylenediamine) building units in the presence of supramolecular cations, [(F-Anil)(18-crown-6)]⁺ (F-Anil⁺ = 3-fluoroanilinium) or [(Me-F-Anil)(18-crown-6)]⁺ (Me-F-Anil⁺ = 3-fluoro-4-methylanilinium), affords two new bimetallic compounds, [(F-Anil)(18-crown-6)][Mn(acacen)Fe(CN)₅(CNH)]·MeOH (1) and [(Me-F-Anil)(18-crown-6)][Mn(acacen)(MeOH)Fe(CN)₅(CNH)]·MeOH (2), respectively. Compound 1 exhibits a one-dimensional topology, while compound 2 is a dinuclear discrete system due to the coordination of a MeOH molecule at the axial position of the [Mn(acacen)]^- unit. For both systems, the acidity of the corresponding supramolecular cation triggers the protonation of the Fe^III moiety as [Fe(CN)₅(CNH)]^2-. Moreover, the resulting -CNH ligand induces hydrogen bonding interactions connecting the chains for 1 or the molecules for 2 into higher dimensional supramolecular networks. Magnetic properties of compounds incorporating these [Fe(CN)₅(CNH)]^2- building blocks were, for the first time, thoroughly investigated, indicating a three-dimensional antiferromagnetic order of single-chain magnets for 1 and an antiferromagnetically interacting S = 3/2 spin ground state for 2.

Bidirectional Photoswitching via Alternating NIR and UV Irradiation on a Core-Shell UCNP-SCO Nanosphere

Bidirectional photoswitching of molecular materials under ambient condition is of significant importance. Herein, we present for the first time that a core-shell UCNP-SCO nanosphere (UCNP = upconversion nanophosphor, SCO = spin crossover), which was composed of a UCNP core (NaYF₄: 20 mol % Yb³⁺, 1 mol % Er³⁺) and an SCO iron(II) shell ([Fe(H₂Bpz)₂(bipy-COOH)], H₂Bpz = dihydrobis(1-pyrazolyl)borate, bipy-COOH = 4,4'-dicarboxy-2,2'-bipyridine), can be reversibly photoswitched between the high-spin and low-spin states at room temperature in the solid state, via alternating irradiation with near-infrared (λ = 980 nm) and ultraviolet (λ = 310 nm) light. What's more, this reversible spin-state switching was accompanied by a variation of fluorescent spectrum and dielectric constants. The strategy here, that is, integrating the SCO iron(II) complex into a UCNP-SCO nanosphere for molecular photoswitching, may open a new area in the development of photocontrolled molecular devices.

Switching single chain magnet behavior via photoinduced bidirectional metal-to-metal charge transfer

The preparation of single-chain magnets (SCMs) with photo-switchable bistable states is essential for the development of high-density photo-recording devices. However, the reversible switching of the SCM behavior upon light irradiation is a formidable challenge. Here we report a well-isolated double zigzag chain {[Fe(bpy)(CN)4]2[Co(phpy)2]}·2H2O (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, phpy = 4-phenylpyridine), which exhibits reversible redox reactions with interconversion between FeIIILS(μ-CN)CoIIHS(μ-NC)FeIIILS (LS = low-spin, HS = high-spin) and FeIIILS(μ-CN)CoIIILS(μ-NC)FeIILS linkages under alternating irradiation with 808 and 532 nm lasers. The bidirectional photo-induced metal-to-metal charge transfer results in significant changes of anisotropy and intrachain magnetic interactions, reversibly switching the SCM behavior. The on-switching SCM behavior driven by light irradiation at 808 nm could be reversibly switched off by irradiation at 532 nm. The results provide an additional and independent way to control the bistable states of SCMs by switching in the 0 → 1 → 0 sequence, with potential applications in high density storage and molecular switches.
