Semiquinone-Bridged Bisdithiazolyl Radicals as Neutral Radical Conductors

Band-like transport in solution-processed perylene diimide dianion films with high Hall mobility

It is crucial to prepare high-mobility organic polycrystalline film through solution processing. However, the delocalized carrier transport of polycrystalline films in organic semiconductors has rarely been investigated through Hall-effect measurement. This study presents a strategy for building strong intermolecular interactions to fabricate solution-crystallized p-type perylene diimide (PDI) dianion films with a closer intermolecular π-π stacking distance of 3.25 Å. The highly delocalized carriers enable a competitive Hall mobility of 3 cm2 V-1 s-1, comparable to that of the reported high-mobility organic single crystals. The PDI dianion films exhibit a high electrical conductivity of 17 S cm-1 and typical band-like transport, as evidenced by the negative temperature linear coefficient of mobility proportional to T-3/2. This work demonstrates that, as the intermolecular π-π interactions become strong enough, they will display high mobility and conductivity, providing a new approach to developing high-mobility organic semiconductor materials.

External Electric Field Effects on AFM-like Magnetism in Nitroxide-Functionalized C+:C Base Pair

In this work, we computationally designed a set of nitroxide diradical base pairs (rC⁺:rC) to propose promising magnetic building blocks for spintronic or magnetic molecular materials. C⁺:C12 is found to possess a considerably large antiferromagnetic-like (AFM-like) spin-coupling magnitude (J = -3286.681 cm^-1) and sensitive magnetic responses to the external electric field. Especially, the presence of the Y direction field that is oriented perpendicular to intermolecular hydrogen bonds has the greatest influence on the magnetic exchange interaction (J being from -2549.578 to -4231.286 cm^-1, ΔJ_Y = 1681.708 cm^-1), which could be understood by two simultaneously occurring effects. On the one hand, the external electric field in the -Y direction can regulate the charge polarization of negative and positive electrostatic potentials on C12 moiety and further facilitate the spin transport property. On the other hand, with increasing electric field strength on the -Y axis, the spin density on diradical sources diminishes and that on the coupler increases, which can lead to a homogenous spin-density distribution. The achieved understanding provides a new strategy for designing self-assembly magnetic nanomaterials or nanodevices and enhancing the AFM coupling through the assistance of external electric field.

Magnetic coupling and spin ordering in bisdithiazolyl, thiaselenazolyl, and bisdiselenazolyl molecular materials

The use of purely organic materials is a promising approach for the miniaturization of devices due to their interesting optical, electronic and magnetic properties. Bisdithiazolyl-based bisDTA compounds have emerged as promising candidates for radical-based single component conductors exhibiting simultaneously magnetic properties. Our computational work focuses on the intriguing magnetism of 4 isostructural pyridine-bridged bisDTA-multifunctional materials triggered by their magnetic and conducting properties being strongly dependent on the different S/Se ratios in the neutral radical skeleton: specifically, bisdithiazolyl (S,S) displays no magnetic order at low temperatures, thiaselenazolyl (Se,S) exhibits spin-canted antiferromagnetism (AFM), and both (S,Se) and bisdiselenazolyl (Se,Se) behave as bulk ferromagnets (FM). Our results reveal that (1) the magnetic response depends on the existence of an intricate network of both AFM and FM spin exchange J_AB couplings between neighbouring radicals; and (2) the structural arrangement of π-stacked pairs of radicals sits on a point in the configurational space that is very close to a crossover region where J_AB switches from AFM to FM. Indeed, for bulk FM, the experimental response is only accounted for when considering an ab initio optimised crystal structure able to portray adequately the electronic structure of bisDTAs in the region close to the temperature at which magnetic ordering emerges. Magneto-structural correlation maps show the large sensitivity of J_AB to very small structural changes with temperature along the π-stacks that lead to drastic changes in the magnetic properties. Clearly, the understanding of magnetism in the title bisDTA compounds is decisive to rationally tailor the properties of multifunctional materials by subtle structural modifications of their crystal packing.

Semiconductive 2D arrays of pancake-bonded oligomers of partially charged TCNQ radicals

Multicentre two-electron (mc/2e or 'pancake bonding') bonding between 7,7,8,8-tetra-cyano-quinodi-methane (TCNQ) radical anions was studied on its 14 novel salts with planar organic cations. The formal charges of the TCNQδ- moieties are -1/2 and -2/3, and they form mc/2e bonded dimers, trimers and tetramers which are further stacked into extended arrays. Multicentre bonding within these oligomers is characterized by short interplanar separations of 2.9-3.2 Å; distances between the oligomers are larger, typically >3.3 Å. The stacks are laterally connected by C-H⋯N hydrogen bonding, forming 2D arrays. The nature of mc/2e bonding is characterized by structural, magnetic and electrical data. The compounds are found to be semiconductors, and high conductivity [10-2 (Ω cm)-1] correlates with short interplanar distances between pancake-bonded oligomers.

Electronic structure and magnetic coupling in selenium substituted pyridine-bridged bisdithiazolyl multifunctional molecular materials

Bisdithiazolyl radicals have furnished in recent years multiple examples of molecular materials with promising conductive and magnetic properties. The electronic band structure and magnetic ordering in four different isostructural pyridine-bridged bisdithiazolyl and Selenium substituted compounds have been studied by means of hybrid DFT based methods as implemented in the CRYSTAL code. The full rationalization of the properties of these multifunctional magnetic molecular materials requires a careful description of their complex open-shell electronic structure. The results describe the systems as narrow band (0.2-0.3 eV dispersion) open-shell semiconductors with a gap of 1.15-1.40 eV between the valence and conducting bands. The bands defining the insulating gap are dominated by orbital contributions arising from the heteroatoms sitting in the outer rings. A low energy closed-shell metallic solution is found at 0.25-0.35 eV above the magnetic solutions thus suggesting a complex mechanism for electric conduction with band and hopping contributions. The observed trend of the conductivity is in line with the variation of the insulating gap but more rigorous modelling is required to take into account the details of the band structure of the systems. For all the systems the spin density is well localised on the molecular units and is independent of the magnetic solution. Thus the system can be described as an ensemble of well-defined S = 1/2 magnetic centres using a two-body Heisenberg-Dirac-van Vleck spin Hamiltonian. The lowest energy electronic solutions are in line with the observed magnetic behaviour at low temperature. The set of competing magnetic exchange interactions that emerges from using a suitable mapping to consistently describe the low energy magnetic solutions explains the variety of magnetic responses (absence of long-range magnetic order, antiferromagnetism or ferromagnetism) of the four studied compounds at low temperatures.

Acid-Free Copper-Catalyzed Electrophilic Nitration of Electron-Rich Arenes with Guanidine Nitrate

A practical copper-catalyzed nitration of electron-rich arenes with trimethylsilyl chloride and guanidine nitrate is reported. A variety of nitrated products were generated in moderate to excellent yields (32-99%) at ambient temperature under acid-free, open-flask, and operationally simple conditions.

Indeno[2,1-a]fluorene-11,12-dione radical anions:synthesis,characterization and property

The one-electron reduction reactions of indeno[2,1-a]fluorene-11,12-dione ( IF ) with various alkali metals bring about the radical anion salts. The different structures and properties are characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) measurements and physical property measurement system (PPMS). IF •- K + (18-c-6) is regarded as a one-dimensional magnetic chain through C-H-C interaction. Theoretical calculations and magnetic results prove that [ IF •- K + (15-c-5)] 2 is a dimer with an open-shell ground state. IF •- Na + (15-c-5) and IF •- K + (cryptand) are monoradical anion salts. IF 2 •- Li + possesses unique π-stack structure with an interplanar separation less than 3.46 Å, making it a semiconductor ( δ RT = 1.9 Χ 10 -4 S•cm -1 ). This work gives a wealth of insights into multifunctional radical anions, and makes the design and development of different functional radicals attractive.

Benzo[1,2,3]dithiazole Compounds: A History of Synthesis and Their Renewed Applicability in Materials and Synthetic Chemistry, Originating from the Herz Reaction

The benzo[1,2,3]dithiazole is a unique heteroaromatic functionality whose conjugated profile instils some fascinating electronic properties. This has been historically recognized in the design and manufacture of organic dyes early last century. Although, with the benefit of increased diagnostic techniques and improved understanding, these structures are attracting greater attention in additional research settings, including applications as organic radicals and semiconductors. In addition, the benzodithiazole functionality has been shown to be a valuable synthetic intermediate in the preparation of a variety of other privileged aromatic and heteroaromatic targets, many of which are important APIs. In this review, the authors aim to critically analyse the potential applicability of these compounds to the fields of not only small-scale laboratory synthetic and medicinal chemistry but also commercial-scale processes and increasingly materials chemistry.

Conducting neutral gold bisdithiolene complex [Au(dspdt)2]˙

[Au(dspdt)2] (dspdt = 2,3-dihydro-5,6-selenophenedithiolate) is an unprecedented example of a neutral gold bisdithiolene complex with a unique structure composed of interacting dimer and trimer chains displaying relatively high electrical conductivity (0.1 S cm-1 at room temperature).

A new synthetic pathway to four substituted imidazoles from readily available 2-((4-aryl(thienyl)-5H-1,2,3-dithiazol-5-ylidene)amino)phenols has been developed. Benzo[d]oxazol-2-yl(aryl(thienyl))methanimines were proved as key intermediates in their synthesis. The formation of an imidazole ring from two methanimine derivatives likely includes the opening of one benzoxazole ring followed by ring closure by intermolecular nucleophilic attack of the N-methanimine atom to a carbon atom of another methanimine.

A polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon diradical with pH-responsive magnetic properties

By integrating azulene with a quinoid moiety, a novel non-alternant polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon molecule BCHF1 exhibiting manifold zwitterionic, quinoidal and diradical behaviors is designed and synthesized. Its zwitterionic feature is evidenced by the changes shown by the ¹H-NMR and absorption spectra when the molecule undergoes reversible protonation and deprotonation reactions at varied pH. The diradical facet, manifesting a small singlet-triplet energy gap (ΔE _S-T), is characterized with a paramagnetic resonance signal detected by the EPR spectroscopy at room temperature. As the diradical properties are not observed in the protonated form, BCHF1+H⁺ , a pH-controlled reversible magnetic switching behavior is illustrated by monitoring the on and off cycles of EPR signals upon successively adding bases and acids to a solution or exposing a thin film of BCHF1+H⁺ to base vapor followed by acid vapor.

Influence of molecular design on radical spin multiplicity: characterisation of BODIPY dyad and triad radical anions

A strategy to create organic molecules with high degrees of radical spin multiplicity is reported in which molecular design is correlated with the behaviour of radical anions in a series of BODIPY dyads. Upon reduction of each BODIPY moiety radical anions are formed which are shown to have different spin multiplicities by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and distinct profiles in their cyclic voltammograms and UV-visible spectra. The relationship between structure and multiplicity is demonstrated showing that the balance between singlet, biradical or triplet states in the dyads depends on relative orientation and connectivity of the BODIPY groups. The strategy is applied to the synthesis of a BODIPY triad which adopts an unusual quartet state upon reduction to its radical trianion.

The Importance of Electronic Dimensionality in Multiorbital Radical Conductors

The exceptional performance of oxobenzene-bridged bis-1,2,3-dithiazolyls 6 as single-component neutral radical conductors arises from the presence of a low-lying π-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital, which reduces the potential barrier to charge transport and increases the kinetic stabilization energy of the metallic state. As part of ongoing efforts to modify the solid-state structures and transport properties of these so-called multiorbital materials, we report the preparation and characterization of the acetoxy, methoxy, and thiomethyl derivatives 6 (R = OAc, OMe, SMe). The crystal structures are based on ribbonlike arrays of radicals laced together by S···N' and S···O' secondary bonding interactions. The steric and electronic effects of the exocyclic ligands varies, affording one-dimensional (1D) π-stacked radicals for R = OAc, 1D cofacial dimer π-stacks for R = SMe, and a pseudo two-dimensional (2D) brick-wall arrangement for R = OMe. Variable-temperature magnetic and conductivity measurements reveal strong antiferromagnetic interactions and Mott insulating behavior for the two radical-based structures (R = OAc, OMe), with lower room-temperature conductivities (σ_RT ≈ 1 × 10^-4 and ∼1 × 10^-3 S cm^-1, respectively) and higher thermal activation energies ( E_act = 0.24 and 0.21 eV, respectively) than found for the ideal 2D brick-wall structure of 6 (R = F), where σ_RT ≈ 1 × 10^-2 S cm^-1 and E_act = 0.10 eV. The performance of R = OMe, OAc relative to that of R = F, is consistent with the results of density functional theory band electronic structure calculations, which indicate a lower kinetic stabilization energy of the putative metallic state arising from their reduced electronic dimensionality.

Structural, Magnetic, and Optical Studies of the Polymorphic 9'-Anthracenyl Dithiadiazolyl Radical

The fluorescent 9'-anthracenyl-functionalized dithiadiazolyl radical (3) exhibits four structurally determined crystalline phases, all of which are monomeric in the solid state. Polymorph 3α (monoclinic P2₁/ c, Z' = 2) is isolated when the radical is condensed onto a cold substrate (enthalpically favored polymorph), whereas 3β (orthorhombic P2₁ 2₁ 2₁, Z' = 3) is collected on a warm substrate (entropically favored polymorph). The α and β polymorphs exhibit chemically distinct structures with 3α exhibiting face-to-face π-π interactions between anthracenyl groups, while 3β exhibits edge-to-face π-π interactions. 3α undergoes an irreversible conversion to 3β on warming to 120 °C (393 K). The β-phase undergoes a series of reversible solid-state transformations on cooling; below 300 K a phase transition occurs to form 3γ (monoclinic P2₁/ c, Z' = 1), and on further cooling below 165 K, a further transition is observed to 3δ (monoclinic P2₁/ n, Z' = 2). Both 3β → 3γ and 3γ → 3δ transitions are reversible (single-crystal X-ray diffraction), and the 3γ → 3δ process exhibits thermal hysteresis with a clear feature observed by heat capacity measurements. Heating 3β above 160 °C generates a fifth polymorph (3ε) which is distinct from 3α-3δ based on powder X-ray diffraction data. The magnetic behavior of both 3α and the 3β/3γ/3δ system reflect an S = 1/2 paramagnet with weak antiferromagnetic coupling. The reversible 3δ ↔ 3γ phase transition exhibits thermal hysteresis of 20 K. Below 50 K, the value of χ_m T for 3δ approaches 0 emu·K·mol^-1 consistent with formation of a gapped state with an S = 0 ground-state configuration. In solution, both paramagnetic 3 and diamagnetic [3][GaCl₄] exhibit similar absorption and emission profiles reflecting similar absorption and emission mechanisms for paramagnetic and diamagnetic forms. Both emit in the deep-blue region of the visible spectrum (λ_em ∼ 440 nm) upon excitation at 255 nm with quantum yields of 4% (3) and 30% ([3][GaCl₄]) affording a switching ratio [Φ_F(3⁺)/Φ_F(3)] of 7.5 in quantum efficiency with oxidation state. Solid-state films of both 3 and [3][GaCl₄] exhibit emission bands at a longer wavelength (490 nm) attributed to excimer emission.

Towards understanding π-stacking interactions between non-aromatic rings

The first systematic study of π interactions between non-aromatic rings, based on the authors' own results from an experimental X-ray charge-density analysis assisted by quantum chemical calculations, is presented. The landmark (non-aromatic) examples include quinoid rings, planar radicals and metal-chelate rings. The results can be summarized as: (i) non-aromatic planar polyenic rings can be stacked, (ii) interactions are more pronounced between systems or rings with little or no π-electron delocalization (e.g. quinones) than those involving delocalized systems (e.g. aromatics), and (iii) the main component of the interaction is electrostatic/multipolar between closed-shell rings, whereas (iv) interactions between radicals involve a significant covalent contribution (multicentric bonding). Thus, stacking covers a wide range of interactions and energies, ranging from weak dispersion to unlocalized two-electron multicentric covalent bonding ('pancake bonding'), allowing a face-to-face stacking arrangement in some chemical species (quinone anions). The predominant interaction in a particular stacked system modulates the physical properties and defines a strategy for crystal engineering of functional materials.

Effect of Substitution on the Hysteretic Phase Transition in a Bistable Phenalenyl-Based Neutral Radical Molecular Conductor

The ability to tune the physical properties of bistable organic functional materials by means of chemistry can facilitate their development for molecular electronic switching components. The butylamine-containing biphenalenyl boron neutral radical, [Bu]₂ B, crystalline compound has recently attracted significant attention by displaying a hysteretic phase transition accompanied by simultaneous bistability in magnetic, electrical, and optical properties close to room temperature. In this report, substitutional doping was applied to [Bu]₂ B by crystallizing solid solutions of bistable [Bu]₂ B and its non-radical-containing counterpart [Bu]₂ Be. With increasing doping degree, the hysteretic phase transition is gradually suppressed in terms of reducing the height, but conserves the width of the hysteresis loop as observed through magnetic susceptibility and electrical conductivity measurements. At the critical doping level of about 6 %, the abrupt transformation of the crystal structure to that of the pure [Bu]₂ Be crystal packing was observed, accompanied by a complete collapse of the hysteresis loop. Further study of the structure-properties relationships of bistable neutral radical conductors based on the [Bu]₂ B host can be conducted utilizing a variety of biphenalenyl-based molecular conductors.

Influence of organic cations on the stacking of semiquinone radical anions

A series of salts of tetrachloro- and tetrabromosemiquinone radical anions reveal four types of stacks: 1) pancake bonded dimers, 2) pancake-bonded trimers, 3) equidistant radicals and 4) a novel type of equidistant stacks of partially charged radicals.

Spin coupling interactions in C[double bond, length as m-dash]C or B-B-cored porphyrin-mimetic graphene patch nitroxide diradicals

In view of the unique structures and promising applications of porphyrins and their derivatives, exploration of their various properties has continued to a hot topic. In this work, we combine porphyrin-mimetic graphene patches which are core-modified by a C[double bond, length as m-dash]C or a B-B unit and two nitroxide radical groups to construct a series of novel diradical molecules (the CC-cored or BB-cored molecules). The spin coupling constants (J) of diradicals were calculated at the (U)B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) level by considering the different linking modes of two nitroxide groups. The results indicate that different core modification considerably affects the J values of such diradicals, and the linking modes can tune the sizes and signs of J, changing their magnetic coupling interactions with different magnitudes and the signs of J from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic or vice versa. More interestingly and importantly, the spin coupling interactions of the CC-cored molecules can also be tuned by stretching the core unit C-C bond, suggesting the possibility of activating specific vibrational modes of the CC-cored diradicals by energy pulses to yield variable J coupling magnitudes. On the other hand, for the BB-cored molecules, two-electron reduction can switch or tune their magnetism from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic. The essence of all observations is further analyzed from the structural effects and orbital and spin density distributions. The findings about magnetic regulation in these core-modified porphyrin-mimetic graphene patch nitroxide diradicals further expand the field of molecular magnets and provide a rational theoretical basis for designing novel building blocks of magnetic functional molecular materials.

Nitrogen Oxides and Nitric Acid Enable the Sustainable Hydroxylation and Nitrohydroxylation of Benzenes under Visible Light Irradiation

A new type of waste recycling strategy is described in which nitrogen oxides or nitric acid are directly employed in photocatalyzed hydroxylations and nitrohydroxylations of benzenes. Through these transformations, otherwise costly denitrification can be combined with the synthesis of valuable compounds for various applications.

TTF–PTM dyads: from switched molecular self assembly in solution to radical conductors in solid state

Dyads formed by tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) linked to perchlorotriphenylmethyl (PTM) radicals exhibit interesting physical properties such as bistability in solution or conductivity in solid state.

The quest for rationalizing the magnetism in purely organic semiquinone-bridged bisdithiazolyl molecular magnets

Semiquinone-bridged bisdithiazolyl-based radicals (XBBO) are appealing purely organic magnetic building blocks for the synthesis of new functional materials. Remarkably, for the phenyl-derivative PhBBO, the rationalization of its magnetism becomes a proof of concept that DFT can dramatically fail to evaluate JAB magnetic interactions between purely organic radical pairs. Instead, wavefunction-based methods are required. Once JAB's are fully characterized, the magnetic topology of PhBBO is disclosed to consist of ferromagnetic FM π-stacks that are very weakly coupled (by FM and AFM JAB interactions). The magnetic susceptibility χT(T) and magnetization M(H) of PhBBO are then calculated using a first-principles bottom-up approach. The study of the unit cell contraction upon cooling from room temperature to zero-Kelvin is relevant to propose a suitable model for the phase transition that occurs at 4.5 K. A simplistic picture tells us that the antiparallel-aligned 1D-FM-chains convert into domains of weakly either FM- or AFM-coupled 1D-FM-chains. Accordingly, the presence of these domains may introduce geometrical spin frustration below 4.5 K.

Theoretical study of the H/D isotope effect on phase transition of hydrogen-bonded organic conductor κ-H3(Cat-EDT-TTF)2

κ-H₃(Cat-EDT-TTF)₂ (H-TTF) is a hydrogen-bonded π-electron system. Only its isotopologue, D-TTF, shows the phase transition. We obtained a symmetric single-well effective-PEC for H-TTF and low-barrier effective-PEC for D-TTF.

The metallic state in neutral radical conductors: dimensionality, pressure and multiple orbital effects

Pressure-induced changes in the solid-state structures and transport properties of three oxobenzene-bridged bisdithiazolyl radicals 2 (R = H, F, Ph) over the range 0-15 GPa are described. All three materials experience compression of their π-stacked architecture, be it (i) 1D ABABAB π-stack (R = Ph), (ii) quasi-1D slipped π-stack (R = H), or (iii) 2D brick-wall π-stack (R = F). While R = H undergoes two structural phase transitions, neither of R = F, Ph display any phase change. All three radicals order as spin-canted antiferromagnets, but spin-canted ordering is lost at pressures <1.5 GPa. At room temperature, their electrical conductivity increases rapidly with pressure, and the thermal activation energy for conduction Eact is eliminated at pressures ranging from ∼3 GPa for R = F to ∼12 GPa for R = Ph, heralding formation of a highly correlated (or bad) metallic state. For R = F, H the pressure-induced Mott insulator to metal conversion has been tracked by measurements of optical conductivity at ambient temperature and electrical resistivity at low temperature. For R = F compression to 6.2 GPa leads to a quasiquadratic temperature dependence of the resistivity over the range 5-300 K, consistent with formation of a 2D Fermi liquid state. DFT band structure calculations suggest that the ease of metallization of these radicals can be ascribed to their multiorbital character. Mixing and overlap of SOMO- and LUMO-based bands affords an increased kinetic energy stabilization of the metallic state relative to a single SOMO-based band system.

Spin-coupling in dimers of 2,3-dicyano-5,6-dichlorosemiquinone radical anions in the crystalline state

A crystal engineering approach is used to stabilize a radical anion in the crystalline state and to modulate the separation distance within π-stacks of anion radicals. Alkali metal salts of 2,3-dicyano-5,6-dichlorosemiquinone (C8Cl2N2O2, DDQ∙- radical anions were prepared and their crystal structures determined: LiDDQ·2H2O·(CH3)2CO, RbDDQ·2H2O and CsDDQ·2H2O. In these structures, stacked dimers of radical anions are formed within π-stacked columns. Within the stacked dimers, interplanar separation distances are significantly shorter than the sum of the van der Waals radii for two C atoms; the shortest is 2.812 Å for the Li salt and the longest is 2.925 Å for the Cs salt. Diamagnetic character, observed by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, indicates spin-coupling of the unpaired electrons within the radical anion dimer. The electron-rich cyano substituents on DDQ∙- influence the electron redistribution within the ring skeleton. The crystalline compounds are also characterized by IR spectroscopy, complemented by quantum-chemical calculations based on both isolated and periodic models.
