Abstract
Recently, nickel catalysts have garnered considerable attention for their efficacy and versatility in asymmetric catalysis, attributed to their distinctive properties. However, the use of cost-effective and sustainable divalent nickel catalysts in C-H activation/asymmetric alkene insertion poses significant challenges due to the intricate control of stereochemistry in the transformation of the tetracoordinate C-Ni(II) intermediate. Herein, we report a Ni(II)-catalyzed enantioselective C-H/N-H annulation with oxabicyclic alkenes. This protocol offers straightforward access to chiral [2,2,1]-bridged bicyclic compounds bearing four consecutive stereocenters with high enantioselectivity (up to 96% ee). The development of a sterically hindered chiral salicyloxazoline (Salox) ligand, TMS-Salox, is key to the success of this protocol. Mechanistic investigations unveiled that a chiral Ni(III)-metalacyclic intermediate was formed through the in situ oxidation of achiral organometallic Ni(II) species and coordination of the Salox ligand. This process led to the creation of a tailored chiral pocket that guides the approach of alkenes, thereby influencing and determining the stereochemistry.

Abstract
The field of nickel catalysis has witnessed remarkable growth in recent years. However, the use of nickel catalysts in enantioselective C-H activation remains a daunting challenge because of their variable oxidation states, intricate coordination chemistry, and unpredictable reactivity patterns. Herein, we report an enantioselective C-H activation reaction catalyzed by commercially available and air-stable nickel(II) catalyst. Readily available and simple (S)-BINOL is used as a chiral ligand. This operationally simple protocol enables the synthesis of planar chiral metallocenes in high yields with excellent enantioselectivity through desymmetrization and kinetic resolution. Air-stable planar chiral nickelacycle intermediates are first synthesized via enantioselective C-H nickelation and shown to be possible intermediates of the reaction. Deuterium-labeling studies, alongside the characterization and transformation of chiral nickel(II) species, suggest that C-H cleavage is the enantio-determining step. Moreover, the large-scale synthesis and diverse synthetic transformations underscore the practicality of this protocol.

Abstract
The arylation of C(sp2)-H and C(sp3)-H bonds in carboxylic acids catalyzed by Pd(II) with 4-aminobentriazole as the directing group was investigated. In addition to activation of the C(sp2)-H bond, selective arylation of alkyl carboxylic acids and amino acids in the β position can also be achieved. This strategy involved a 5,5-bicyclic Pd intermediate complex whose structure was determined by X-ray single crystal diffraction analysis. Importantly, the DG (directing group) can be easily removed under mild conditions.

Abstract
ConspectusThe development of functionalization reactions involving the activation of C-H bonds has evolved extensively due to the atom and step economy associated with such reactions. Among these reactions, chelation assistance has been shown to provide a powerful solution to the serious issues of reactivity and regioselectivity faced in the activation of C-H bonds. The vast majority of C-H functionalization reactions reported thus far has involved the use of precious metals. Kleiman and Dubeck reported the cyclonickelation of azobenzene and NiCp2 in which an azo group directs a Ni center to activate the ortho C-H bond in close proximity. Although this stoichiometric reaction was discovered earlier than that for other transition-metal complexes, its development as a catalytic reaction was delayed. No general catalytic systems were available for Ni-catalyzed C-H functionalization reactions for a long time. This Account details our group's development of Ni(0)- and Ni(II)-catalyzed chelation-assisted C-H functionalization reactions. It also highlights how the new strategy can be extended to the activation of other unreactive bonds. In the early 2010s, we found that the Ni(0)-catalyzed reaction of aromatic amides that contain a 2-pyridinylmethylamine moiety as a directing group with alkynes results in C-H/N-H oxidative annulation to give isoquinolinones. In addition, the combination of a Ni(II) catalyst and an 8-aminoquinoline directing group was found to be a superior combination for developing a wide variety of C-H functionalization reactions with various electrophiles. The reactions were proposed to include the formation of unstable Ni(IV) and/or Ni(III) species; the generation of such high-valence Ni species was rare at that time, but since then, many papers dealing with DFT and organometallic studies have appeared in the literature in attempts to understand the mechanism. Based on our in-depth considerations of the mechanism with respect to why an N,N-bidentate directing group is required, we realized that the formation of a N-Ni bond by the oxidative addition of a N-H bond to a Ni(0) species or a ligand exchange between a N-H bond and Ni(II) species is the key step. We concluded that the precoordination of the N(sp2) atom in the directing group positions the Ni species to be in close proximity to the N-H bond which permits the formation of a N-Ni bond. Based on this working hypothesis, we carried out the reaction using KOtBu as a base and found that the Ni(0)-catalyzed reaction of aromatic amides that do not contain such a specific directing group with alkynes results in the formation of the desired isoquinolinone, in which an amidate anion acts as the actual directing group. Remarkably, this strategy was found to be applicable to the activation of various other unreactive bonds such as C-F, C-O, C-S, and C-CN.

Abstract
β-Lactam is a ubiquitous scaffold in bioactive compounds and pharmaceuticals. Herein, we disclose a streamlined method for the construction of β-lactams starting from unactivated alkenes and alkyl bromides via a Cu-catalyzed inter-/intramolecular carboamidation. This reaction proceeded smoothly under mild reaction conditions and exhibited a broad substrate scope and various functional groups. This protocol is not only compatible with 1, 2, and 3° alkyl bromides but also suitable for α-bromo nitrile as well as various benzyl bromides. The mechanism exploration indicated that sequential radical addition/reductive elimination was involved.

Abstract
The scission of a C(sp3)-H bond to form a new metal-alkyl bond is a fundamental step in coordination chemistry and catalysis. However, the extent of C-H bond weakening when this moiety interacts with a transition metal is poorly understood and quantifying this phenomenon could provide insights into designing more efficient C-H functionalization catalysts. We present a nickel complex with a robust adamantyl reporter ligand that enables the measurement of C-H acidity (pKa) and bond dissociation free energy (BDFE) for a C(sp3)-H agostic interaction, showing a decrease in pKa by dozens of orders of magnitude and BDFE decrease of about 30 kcal/mol upon coordination. X-ray crystallographic data is provided for all molecules, including a distorted square planar NiIII metalloradical and "doubly agostic" NiII(κ2-CH2) complex.

Abstract
Transition-metal-catalyzed, coordination-assisted C(sp3)-H functionalization has revolutionized synthetic planning over the past few decades as the use of these directing groups has allowed for increased access to many strategic positions in organic molecules. Nonetheless, several challenges remain preeminent, such as the requirement for high temperatures, the difficulty in removing or converting directing groups, and, although many metals provide some reactivity, the difficulty in employing metals outside of palladium. This review aims to give a comprehensive overview of coordination-assisted, transition-metal-catalyzed, direct functionalization of nonactivated C(sp3)-H bonds by covering the literature since 2004 in order to demonstrate the current state-of-the-art methods as well as the current limitations. For clarity, this review has been divided into nine sections by the transition metal catalyst with subdivisions by the type of bond formation. Synthetic applications and reaction mechanism are discussed where appropriate.

Abstract
Direct C-H/C-H coupling represents an appealing method for the construction of C-C bonds, and the cross-coupling of unactivated C(sp3)-H and C(sp2)-H bonds is challenging and remains to be investigated. We have developed the Pd-catalyzed intramolecular coupling of inert C(sp3)-H and C(sp2)-H bonds. The reaction proceeded by o-methyl oxime-directed aryl C(sp2)-H activation and subsequent alkyl C(sp3)-H cleavage, generating C(sp2),C(sp3)-palladacycles as the key intermediates. Dihydrobenzofurans and indanes were formed as the final products.

Abstract
Transition-metal-catalyzed cross-electrophile C(sp2)–(sp3) coupling and C–H alkylation reactions represent two efficient methods for the incorporation of an alkyl group into aromatic rings. Herein, we report a Pd-catalyzed cascade cross-electrophile coupling and C–H alkylation reaction of 2-iodo-alkoxylarenes with alkyl chlorides. Methoxy and benzyloxy groups, which are ubiquitous functional groups and common protecting groups, were utilized as crucial mediators via primary or secondary C(sp3)–H activation. The reaction provides an innovative and convenient access for the synthesis of alkylated phenol derivatives, which are widely found in bioactive compounds and organic functional materials. A cascade Pd-catalyzed cross-electrophile coupling and C–H alkylation reaction of 2-iodo-alkoxylarenes with alkyl chlorides has been developed by using an ortho-methoxy or benzyloxy group as a mediator via C(sp3)–H activation.![]()

Abstract
The functionalization of remote unactivated C(sp3)-H and the reaction selectivity are among the core pursuits for transition-metal catalytic system development. Herein, we report Pd-catalyzed γ-C(sp3)-H-selective alkylation and alkenylation with removable 7-azaindole as a directing group. Acid and base were found to be the decisive regulators for the selective alkylation and alkenylation, respectively, on the same single substrate under otherwise the same reaction conditions. Various acrylates were compatible for the formation of C(sp3)-C(sp3) and C(sp3)-C(sp2) bonds. The alkenylation protocol could be further extended to acrylates with natural product units and α,β-unsaturated ketones. The preliminary synthetic manipulation of the alkylation and alkenylation products demonstrates the potential of this strategy for structurally diverse aliphatic chain extension and functionalization. Mechanistic experimental studies showed that the acidic and basic catalytic transformations shared the same six-membered dimer palladacycle.

Abstract
We report here a C-H homoallylation reaction of aromatic ketones with methylenecyclopropanes (MCPs) only using a catalytic amount of Fe(PMe3)4. A variety of aromatic ketones and MCPs are applicable to the reaction to form ortho-homoallylated aromatic ketones selectively via regioselective scission of the three-membered rings. The homoallylated products are amenable to further elaborations, providing functionalized 1,2-dihydronaphthalenes.

Abstract
Carbon-based gas molecules are readily available feedstocks and are widely used in industry as building blocks or fuels. However, their application in the synthesis of fine chemicals has been hampered due to operational complexity, poor reaction efficiency and selectivity. Recent development of photoredox-promoted transformations using such gaseous reagents has received considerable attention from the synthetic community. In this review, efforts in developing light-promoted organic transformations using carbon-based natural gases as C1 or C2 feedstocks and to overcome the associated challenges are briefly summarized.

Abstract
Catalyzed by silver salt, the unactivated C(sp3)-H heteroarylation of free alcohol at the δ position is realized under gentle thermal conditions in water through a radical procedure. Both protonic acids and Lewis acids are found to be efficient for activating pyridines for this Minisci-type reaction. The reaction enjoys a good functional group tolerance and substrate scope. Terminal secondary and tertiary alcohols are suitable substrates. With either electron-donating or -withdrawing groups, the electron-deficient heteroarene substrates generate the target products in moderate to good yields. A gram-scale experiment can be successfully operated. A radical blocking experiment and a radical clock experiment are studied to support the radical mechanism.

Abstract
The catalytic generation of homoenolates and their higher homologues has been a long-standing challenge. Like the generation of transition metal enolates, which have been used to great affect in synthesis and medicinal chemistries, homoenolates and their higher homologues have much potential, albeit largely unrealized. Herein, a nickel-catalyzed generation of homoenolates, and their higher homologues, via decarbonylation of readily available cyclic anhydrides has been developed. The utility of nickel-bound homoenolates and their higher homologues is demonstrated by cross-coupling with unactivated alkyl bromides, generating a diverse array of aliphatic acids. A broad range of functional groups is tolerated. Preliminary mechanistic studies demonstrate that: (1) oxidative addition of anhydrides by the catalyst is faster than oxidative addition of alkyl bromides; (2) nickel bound metallocycles are involved in this transformation and (3) the catalyst undergoes a single electron transfer (SET) process with the alkyl bromide.

Abstract
During the past decades, synthetic organic chemistry discovered that directing group assisted C-H activation is a key tool for the expedient and siteselective construction of C-C bonds. Among the various directing group strategies, bidentate directing groups are now recognized as one of the most efficient devices for the selective functionalization of certain positions due to fact that its metal center permits fine, tunable, and reversible coordination. The family of bidentate directing groups permit various types of assistance to be achieved, such as N,N-dentate, N,O-dentate, and N,S-dentate auxiliaries, which are categorized based on the coordination site. In this review, we broadly discuss various C-H bond functionalization reactions for the formation of C-C bonds with the aid of bidentate directing groups.

Abstract
A mild and efficient nickel-catalyzed method for the coupling of unactivated primary and secondary alkyl chlorides with the C-H bond of indoles and pyrroles is described which demonstrates a high level of chemo and regioselectivity. The reaction tolerates numerous functionalities, such as halide, alkenyl, alkynyl, ether, thioether, furanyl, pyrrolyl, indolyl and carbazolyl groups including acyclic and cyclic alkyls under the reaction conditions. Mechanistic investigation highlights that the alkylation proceeds through a single-electron transfer (SET) process with Ni(i)-species being the active catalyst. Overall, the alkylation follows a Ni(i)/Ni(iii) pathway involving the rate-influencing two-step single-electron oxidative addition of alkyl chlorides.

Abstract
Nickel-catalyzed regioselective C(2)-H arylation of indoles and pyrroles with aryl chlorides is achieved under neat conditions. This method allows the efficient coupling of diverse aryl chlorides employing a user-friendly and inexpensive Ni(OAc)2/dppf catalyst system at 80 °C. Numerous functionalities, such as halides, alkyl ether, fluoro-alkyl ether, and thioether, and substituted amines, including heteroarenes like benzothiazolyl, pyrrolyl, indolyl, and carbazolyl, are well tolerated under the reaction conditions. The preliminary mechanistic study highlights a single-electron transfer (SET) pathway for the arylation reaction.

Abstract
The mechanism of Ni-catalyzed ortho C(sp2)-H oxidative cycloaddition of aromatic amides with internal alkynes containing 2-pyridinylmethylamine directing group was investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The C-H cleavage step proceeds via σ-complex-assisted metathesis (σ-CAM) with an alkenyl-Ni(II) complex. This is in contrast to the more common carboxylate/carbonate-assisted concerted metalation-deprotonation mechanism in related Ni-catalyzed C-H bond functionalization reactions with N,N-bidentate directing groups. In this reaction, the alkyne not only serves as the coupling partner, but also facilitates the σ-CAM C-H metalation both kinetically and thermodynamically. The subsequent functionalization of the five-membered nickelacycle proceeds via alkyne insertion into the Ni-C bond to form a seven-membered nickelacycle. This process proceeds with high levels of regioselectivity to form a C-C bond with sterically more encumbered alkyne terminus. This unusual regioselectivity is due to steric repulsions with the directing group that is coplanar with the alkyne in the migratory insertion transition state. The C-N bond reductive elimination to form the isoquinolone cycloadduct is promoted by PPh3 complexation to the Ni center and the use of flexible 2-pyridinylmethylamine directing group. The origin of the cis-trans isomerism of alkene byproduct was also explained by computations.

Abstract
The efficient, one-pot access to the transamidation of 8-aminoquinoline (8-AQ), notorious for its harsh removal conditions, has been widely employed as an auxiliary in C⁻H functionalization reactions due to its strong directing ability. In this study, the facile and mild Boc protection of the corresponding 8-AQ amide was critical to activate the amide C(acyl)⁻N bond by twisting its geometry to lower the amidic resonance energy. Both aryl and alkyl amines proceeded transamidation in one-pot, user-friendly conditions with excellent yields.
