Abstract
A highly stereoselective asymmetric total synthesis of (-)-jimenezin (1), a potent anticancer acetogenin, was efficiently completed with the key feature being a sequential intramolecular amide enolate alkylation (IAEA). Our investigation to probe the origin of the complete stereoselectivity in the second IAEA step to form the conformationally flexible tetrahydrofuran with perfect stereocontrol identified the presence of the oxygen atom in the adjacent tetrahydropyran ring to be crucial.

Abstract
The direct oxidative cyclization of 1,5-dienes is a valuable synthetic method for the (dia)stereoselective preparation of substituted tetrahydrofurans. Closely related reactions start from 5,6-dihydroxy or 5-hydroxyalkenes to generate similar products in a mechanistically analogous manner. After a brief overview on the history of this group of transformations and a survey on mechanistic and stereochemical aspects, this review article provides a summary on applications in natural product synthesis. Moreover, current limitations and future directions in this area of chemistry are discussed.

Abstract
Pd-catalyzed 1,2-addition (instead of 1,4-addition) of arylboronic acids to 2-alkylenecyclobutanones followed by β-carbon elimination from the resulting palladium cyclobutanolates to afford γ,δ-unsaturated ketones was developed. The desired γ,δ-unsaturated ketones were obtained in good to excellent yields with Z/E selectivities of up to >99:1 and a broad spectrum of functional group tolerability.

Abstract
In recent decades, annonaceous acetogenins have become highly studied plant secondary metabolites in terms of their isolation, structure elucidation, synthesis, biological evaluation, mechanism of action, and toxicity. The aim of the present contribution is to summarize chemical and biological reports published since 1997 on annonaceous acetogenins and synthetic acetogenin mimics. The compounds are considered biologically in terms of their cytotoxicity for cancer cell lines, neurotoxicity, pesticidal effects, and miscellaneous activities.

Abstract
We have developed large-scale efficient procedures for the conversion of commercially available [(13) C]- or [(2) H3 ,(13) C]methanol and (13) CO2 or (13) C-labeled bromoacetic acid to 2-(phenylthio)[1,2-(13) C2 ]-, [1-(13) C]-, and [2-(13) C]acetic acid. The resulting derivatives are versatile, chemically stable, and nonvolatile two-carbon labeling precursors. We have used the (13) C-isotopomers of 2-(phenylthio)acetic acid in the synthesis of (13) C-labeled acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, and trans-crotonic acid.

Abstract
The high activity and selectivity of zeolites in the cyclisation of unsaturated alcohols is reported for the first time; the details of a reaction mechanism based on quantum chemical calculations are also provided. The high efficiency of zeolites MFI, BEA and FAU in the cyclisation of unsaturated alcohols (cis-decen-1-ol, 6-methylhept-5-en-2-ol and 2-allylphenol) to afford oxygen-containing heterocyclic rings is demonstrated. The best catalytic performance is found for zeolites with the optimum concentration of Brønsted acid sites (ca. 0.2 mmol g(-1)) and the minimum number of Lewis acid sites. It is proposed that the efficiency of the catalysts is reduced by the existence of the so-called dual site, at which a molecule of unsaturated alcohol can simultaneously interact with two acid sites (an OH group with one and the double bond with the other Brønsted site), which increases the interaction strength. The formation of such adsorption complexes leads to a decrease in the catalyst activity because of (i) an increase in the reaction barrier, (ii) an unfavourable conformation and (iii) diffusion limitations. A new procedure for the preparation of tetrahydrofurans and pyrans over zeolite catalysts provides important oxygen-containing heterocycles with numerous applications.

Abstract
The osmium-catalyzed oxidative cyclization of vicinal diols onto proximal olefins to generate 2,5-cis-substituted tetrahydrofurans (THFs) has been exploited as the key step for the construction of several complex THF-containing natural products, namely, the annonaceous acetogenins cis-sylvaticin, sylvaticin, and the excitatory amino acid neo-dysiherbaine A. Recently modified conditions that employ a Lewis acid enable the cyclization to proceed under milder conditions, providing greater tolerance to acid-sensitive functional groups, as demonstrated in two of the syntheses. Flexibility for the construction of 2,5-trans-THFs was demonstrated in the synthesis of sylvaticin by utilization of an intramolecular hydride-shift sequence.

Abstract
The synthesis of the subgroups of acetogenins containing non-adjacent bis-THF and non-adjacent THF-THP core units is reviewed. Specifically, total syntheses of gigantecin, 4-deoxygigantecin, cis-sylvaticin, squamostatin-C, squamostatin-D, sylvaticin and mucocin are discussed.
