Abstract
D-π-A dyes are an ideal strategy for building near-infrared fluorescent probes that have a large Stokes shift due to their excellent properties of adjustable emission wavelength and Stokes shift. Developing a near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent probe (JTPQ-Cys) capable of detecting cysteine (Cys) was the aim of this study. In JTPQ-Cys, julolidine served as the electron donor (D) and quinoline as the electron acceptor (A), with 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene as the π-bridge. The π-conjugation and vibrational/rotational activity of the molecule were increased by the introduction of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene, causing the molecule to exhibit NIR emission and a large Stokes shift. When JTPQ-Cys was used to detect Cys, a clear fluorescence turn-on signal was observed at 741 nm, together with a Stokes shift of 268 nm. The limit of detection of JTPQ-Cys for Cys is 24 nM. Moreover, JTPQ-Cys has been utilized successfully for imaging studies of Cys in cells and zebrafish because it has good photostability, low cytotoxicity, and a high signal-to-noise ratio. Overall, our findings demonstrate the potential of JTPQ-Cys to be one of the best choices for detecting Cys in biological systems, and JTPQ is an ideal fluorophore to construct fluorescence dyes for bioimaging.

Abstract
In this study, the sensing mechanism of (2E,4E)-5-(4-(dimethylamino)phenyl)-1-(2-(2,4dinitrophenoxy)phenyl)penta-2,4-dien-1-one (DAPH-DNP) towards thiophenols was investigated by density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT). The DNP group plays an important role in charge transfer excitation. Due to the typical donor-excited photo-induced electron transfer (d-PET) process, DAPH-DNP has fluorescence quenching behavior. After the thiolysis reaction between DAPH-DNP and thiophenol, the hydroxyl group is released, and DAPH is generated with the reaction showing strong fluorescence. The fluorescence enhancement of DAPH is not caused by an excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process. The potential energy curves (PECs) show that DAPH-keto is less stable than DAPH-enol. The frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) of DAPH show that the excitation process is accompanied by intramolecular charger transfer (ICT), and the corresponding character of DAPH was further confirmed by hole-electron and interfragment charge transfer (IFCT) analysis methods. Above all, the sensing mechanism of the turn-on type probe DAPH-DNP towards thiophenol is based on the PET mechanism.

Abstract
Based on Marcus theory, the photoinduced electron transfer properties of D-A type non-fullerene acceptor organic solar cells (OSCs) under the dependence of external electric field (Fext) were investigated. The research results shown that the charge transfer mode under different Fext intensities changes with certain regularity. Focusing on the important parameters (ΔG, λ, and VDA) that affect the charge transfer rate, it was found that both charge separation (|ΔGCS|>λ(1.3019 vs 0.8275 eV at Fext = 0) and charge recombiation (|ΔGCR|>λ, (1.9633 vs 0.8275 eV)) processes occur in the Marcus inverted region. The ΔGCS is relatively sensitive to Fext, and the calculated ΔGCS at different Fext intensities yields an increment of 0.0073 eV, which is also the main reason for the increase in the rate of charge separation. The ΔGCR ranges between -1.9633 and -1.9637 eV, is insensitive to Fext, and ΔGCR is significantly smaller than ΔGCS, which makes the charge recombination rate significantly smaller than the charge separation rate. For VDA, it is found that VDA will transition to a new level only when the Fext intensity reaches a certain intensity, which also enables to obtain a faster charge separation rate. By studying the charge transfer parameters in different polar solvents, it is found that polar solvents can indeed increase the charge transfer rate. To a certain extent, our results also demonstrate that the addition of Fext can further improve the performance of non-fullerene acceptor OSCs.

Abstract
Distinct from predominately known fluorescence quenching (turn-off) detection, turn-on response to hazardous substances by luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs) could greatly avoid signal loss and susceptibility to environmental stimulus. However, such detection rarely occurs and lacks theoretical elucidations. Here, we present the first example of unique turn-on and unprecedented turn-off-on responses to a variety of acids by a stable 12-connected hexanuclear Y(III)-cluster-based LMOF material─JLU-MOF111, featuring the nondefault pcu topology. Benefiting from the "pocket" structures formed by the carbazole-containing ligands, JLU-MOF111 can sense multiple inorganic and organic acids via different degrees of fluorescence turn-on behaviors. Particularly, turn-on sensing of HNO3, HCl, HBr, and TFA is hypersensitive with LODs as low as the ppb level. Theoretical calculations confirm weak interactions in acid-ligand complexes, which lead to constrained rotations of benzene moieties of the ligands when the complexes decay from excited states. These account for the turn-on response through reduced nonradiative energy consumption that competes with emissive decay. The turn-off-on response to 4-NBA and 3,5-DNBA involves an excited-state electron transfer process that dominates the turn-off stage and prohibited nonradiative decay that competes with the intrinsic emission of the ligand and dominates the turn-on stage. This work has a guiding significance for the full-scale understanding of turn-on and turn-off-on sensing performance in LMOF materials and beyond.

Abstract
The first discovery of aggregation-induced emission (AIE), whereby luminogen aggregation plays a positive role in enhancing the light-emission efficiency, has piqued the interest of many researchers as it opens up a new avenue for the exploration of practically beneficial luminescent materials. Diverse AIE-active luminogens (or AIEgens) with tunable emission colours and very high quantum yields (up to unity) in the solid state have been extensively utilised in a broad range of fields including optoelectronics, energy and bioscience. In this article, we describe novel fluorene-based fluorogens that exhibit bright emission in the solid-state, mechanical stimuli-responsive optical properties and aggregation-induced emissive ability, and were able to modulate their donor and acceptor properties. The target compounds were synthesized by a Knoevenagel condensation followed by Suzuki cross-coupling reaction, which tends to result in good yields. The target cyanostilbenes (4a-4d) show different reversibly switched states with high contrast through morphology modulation and demonstrate solvatochromic, vapochromic, and AIE properties. These results strongly suggest that compound 4d has better properties than the other derivatives (4a-c) due to the presence of extended donor-acceptor ability. Moreover, density-functional theory (DFT) calculations strongly support the UV-Vis and fluorescence spectral studies. The formation of nano-flakes and cuboid-shaped nanocrystals was further confirmed by FE-SEM and AFM studies. The synthesized compound 4d displayed very bright emission in the solid state and in the aggregate state as compared with the other derivatives (4a-4c). These results might be due to the presence of high-color contrast, which is an advantage for elucidation and overcomes the challenges exhibited in live-cell imaging applications. Moreover, an MTT assay on live A549 cells incubated with the target compound (4d) showed very low cytotoxicity even at high concentrations.

Abstract
In the current work, eleven terpolymer donors with different electron-withdrawing groups were designed and investigated based on the reported PTB7Ir to screen outstanding donors for triplet-material-based organic photovoltaics (T-OPVs). Geometry structures, frontier molecular orbital energy levels, energy driving forces (ΔEL–L), absorption spectra, energy differences between S1 and T1 states (ΔEST), and driving forces of the triplet charge recombination (−ΔGCRT) of PTB7Ir and designed 1–11 systems were evaluated by DFT and TD-DFT methods to estimate the light absorption abilities and the charge transfer dynamics. The results show that designed 5, 8, 10 and 11 possess larger spin–orbit couplings (SOC) affinity and smaller ΔEST and −ΔGCRT values, which could effectively suppress the triplet charge recombination process at the donor/acceptor interface. Excitingly, the designed terpolymer 10 presents enhanced light absorption, revealing that it will be a promising donor candidate for high-performance T-OPV devices. Moreover, the results can provide theoretical guidelines to predict new terpolymer donors of T-OPVs. Compared with PTB7Ir, the designed terpolymer 10 will be a promising donor candidate for high-performance T-OPVs.![]()

Abstract
Molecular structures of hole transport materials (HTMs) have significant impact on the optoelectronic properties of perovskite/HTM heterojunction. But the structure-property relationship in the heterojunction remains poorly understood. By using poly(3-alkylthiophene) (P3AT) as the HTM model, here we apply sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy to establish correlations among conformations of P3ATs, the hole extraction ability of P3ATs from the perovskite layer, and the charge mobility of P3ATs. It is revealed that with similar energy-level alignment, the conformational order of alkyl side chains in regioregular P3ATs can effectively regulate the hole extraction ability of P3ATs from perovskite layer by tuning reorganization energy. By contrast, the charge mobility of P3ATs strongly depends on the P3AT backbone's coplanarity. Our findings decouple the roles of the long-hidden conformational order of alkyl side chain and the polythiophene backbone's coplanarity on the performance of perovskite/HTM heterojunction, offering useful guidelines for boosting the performance of optoelectronic devices.

Abstract
Two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted growing interest due to excellent performance in gas separation, energy conversion and storage, catalysis, and sensing, but their homochirality and exfoliation as well as related enantioselective catalysis and sensing remain a stage of pending exploration owing to the scarcity of homochiral MOFs and intrinsic aggregation of nanosheets. Herein, a homochiral 2D MOF (HMOF-3) with polymeric chirality, good thermostability, and solvent stability is designed and constructed by a homochiral organic ligand 5,5'-((1R,2R)-cyclohexane dicarbonyl bis(azanediyl)) diisophthalic acid (R,R-CHCAIP), a ditopic coligand 4,4'-bipyridine, and Zn salts. Remarkably, HMOF-3 can be exfoliated via solvent-assisted sonication to achieve 2D HMOF-3 nanosheets (HMOF-3-NS), which exhibit a sensitive turn-on effect with the fluorescence enhancement up to 63.5 times in the presence of R/S-mandelic acid, d/l-tartaric acid, d/l-lactic acid, d/l-alanine, and d/l-tryptophan. More importantly, the high surface area, polymeric chirality environment, and highly accessible functional sites on the surface of HMOF-3 nanosheets enable close contact with probed enantiomers, leading to highly enantioselective and sensitive sensing. The turn-on mechanism of host-guest-assisted electronic transfer is confirmed by DFT calculation and the relative experiment. This work highlights the promise of homochiral 2D MOF nanosheets for enantioselective sensing applications.

The triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA) effect of sensitizers themselves can lead to the additional quenching of lifetimes of triplet states; therefore, how to weaken the TTA effect of sensitizers is an urgent issue to be resolved for their further applications. Besides, it remains a tremendous challenge for constructing supramolecular systems of photosensitizers based on photosensitizer-functionalized pillararenes because there have been very few investigations on them. Thus, 2,6-diiodo-1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-8-phenyl-4,4-difluoroboradiazaindacene (DIBDP) and ethoxy pillar[5]arene (EtP5) were utilized to synthesize a DIBDP-functionalized pillar[5]arene (EtP5-DIBDP), a cyano-containing DIBDP (G) used as a guest molecule was also prepared, and they were used to investigate the electron-transfer mechanism between EtP5 and DIBDP moieties and weaken the TTA effect of DIBDP moieties. The theoretical computational results of frontier molecular orbitals and isosurfaces of spin density preliminarily predicted that the cavities of the EtP5 moiety had influence on the fluorescence emission of DIBDP units but not on their triplet states in EtP5-DIBDP. The fluorescence emission intensities in a variety of solvents with different polarities and electrochemical studies revealed that there was electron transfer from EtP5 to the DIBDP units, and the electron-transfer process had influence on the fluorescence emission but not on the triplet states of DIBDP moieties in EtP5-DIBDP, which verified the results of density functional theory calculations. The triplet state lifetimes of EtP5-DIBDP were longer than those of DIBDP and G and the photooxidation abilities of EtP5-DIBDP were better than those of DIBDP and G at a high concentration (1.0 × 10-5 M) in various solvents; in contrast, the intrinsic triplet state lifetimes and singlet oxygen quantum yields (ΦΔ) of DIBDP, G, and EtP5-DIBDP were very similar. This was because the steric hindrance of EtP5 moieties could weaken the TTA effect of DIBDP moieties without influencing their intrinsic triplet state lifetimes in EtP5-DIBDP.

Abstract
We report the synthesis and theoretical study of two new colorimetric chemosensors with special selectivity and sensitivity to Ni2+ and Cu2+ ions over other metal cations in the CH3CN/H2O solution. Compounds (E)-4-((2-nitrophenyl)diazenyl)-N,N-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)aniline (A) and (E)-4-((3-nitrophenyl)diazenyl)-N,N-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)aniline (B) exhibited a drastic color change from yellow to colorless, which allows the detection of the mentioned metal cations through different techniques. The interaction of sensors with these metal ions induced a new absorption band with a hypsochromic shift to the characteristic signal of the free sensors. A theoretical study via time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) was performed. This method has enabled us to reproduce the hypsochromic shift in the maximum UV-vis absorption band and explain the selective sensing of the ions. For all of the systems studied, the absorption band is characterized by a π → π* transition centered in the ligand. Instead of Ni2+ and Cu2+ ions, the transition is set toward the σ* molecular orbital with a strong contribution of the 3dx2-y2 transition (π → 3dx2-y2). These absorptions imply a ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) mechanism that results in the hypsochromic shift in the absorption band of these systems.

Abstract
Time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) method was used to study the different excited states proton transfer mechanism of DPP in cyclohexane (CHE) and Methanol (MeOH). The results indicate that the concerted mechanism and the stepwise mechanism coexist in the double proton transfer process of DPP dimer in the aprotic solvent CHE, the stepwise mechanism predominates. The stepwise mechanism can only carry out single proton transfer (DPP-SPT), the second proton cannot be transferred because it is hindered by high energy barriers. The concerted mechanism produces a double proton transfer (DPP-DPT). The potential energy surface of the DPP dimer was calculated and the double fluorescence phenomenon of DPP dimer observed by Chou et al. (P.T. Chou, Y.I. Liu, H.W. Liu, W.S. Yu, Dual Excitation behavior of double proton transfer versus Charge Transfer in 4-(N-Substituted Amino)-1H-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridines tuned by dielectric and hydrogen-bonding perturbation, J. Am. Chem. Soc., 123 (2001) 12119-12120) was explained. In view of the protonic solvent effect of methanol, the potential energy curve of the DPP/MeOH cluster was constructed. The fluorescence quenching process of DPP/MeOH clusters was elucidated. The proton transfer pathways of DPP/MeOH clusters are revealed in two different concerted ways (Type A: protons transfer from DPP molecules to MeOH solvent molecules; Type B: protons transfer from MeOH solvent to DPP molecules). The ESPT process of DPP molecules in the protic solvent MeOH was found to be more prone to Type B. The results can help to better understand the intermolecular hydrogen bonding mechanism of DPP molecules.

Abstract
The rates of charge separation and charge recombination of the cyanine dye/C60 heterojunction solar cell in an external electric field were provided using the Marcus and Marcus-Levich-Jortner formalisms. The vibrational mode as another influencing factor was also introduced into the rate expression for the planar heterojunction solar cell. Detailed theoretical analysis of the excited-state of the Cy3/C60 blend was achieved using density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory. The Gibbs free energy was regulated by an external electric field, while the reorganisation energy presented the opposite conclusion. Frequency analysis was utilised to demonstrate the energy stability of the obtained structures. The rate calculated using the Marcus formalism was greater than that obtained by the Marcus-Levich-Jortner formalism. Consideration of the calculated rates in all vibration modes and at different external electric field strengths indicated that vibrational mode and external electric field played important roles in determining the rates of charge separate and charge recombination, which could provide a more accurate theoretical rate for organic photovoltaic devices.

Abstract
A set of silver(i) 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl) pyrazolate adducts with 1,10-phenanthroline (L2), 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline (neocuproine, L3) and 2,9-dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (bathocuproine, L4) was synthesized starting from trimeric silver pyrazolate Ag3Pz3. Reactions with sterically hindered L3 and L4 cause the destruction of the original trimeric core, yielding a dinuclear Ag2Pz2 cycle with an unprecedented chair configuration for L3, while bathocuproine L4 leads to the drastic rearrangement of the silver pyrazolate core into cationic Ag(L4)2 and anionic Ag5Pz6 subunits. All complexes obtained exhibit phosphorescence in the solid state. Time-dependent density functional theory calculations demonstrate their different possible emission processes, explaining their emission behavior as well as their lifetimes.

Abstract
As electron acceptors, non-fullerene molecules can overcome the shortcomings of fullerenes and their derivatives (such as high cost, poor co-solubility, and weak light absorption). The photoelectric properties of two potential non-fullerene polymer solar cells (PSCs) PBDB-T:IF-TN (PB:IF) and PBDB-T:IDT-TN (PB:IDT) are studied by density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT). Based on the optimized structure of the ground state, the effects of the electron donor (D) and electron acceptor (A) (D/A) interfaces PBDB-T/IF-TN (PB/IF) and PBDB-T/IDT-TN (PB/IDT) are studied by a quantum-chemical method (QM) and Marcus theory. Firstly, for two non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) IF-TN and IDT-TN, the NFA IDT-TN has better optical absorption ability and better electron transport ability than IF-TN. Secondly, for the D/A interfaces PB/IF and PB/IDT, they both have high optical absorption and electron transfer abilities, and PB/IDT has better optical absorption and lower exciton binding energy. Finally, some important parameters (open-circuit voltage, voltage loss, fill factor, and power conversion efficiency) are calculated and simulated by establishing the theoretical model. From the above analysis, the results show that the non-fullerene PSC PB:IDT has better photoelectric characteristics than PB:IF.

Abstract
An effective bioanalytical method for rapid, sensitive, specific, and in situ sensing of nitric oxide (NO) is the key for further unveiling the biological functions of this gasotransmitter molecule in vitro and in vivo. In this contribution, a new fluorescence probe for sensing and imaging of NO in live systems was developed. The probe, FP-NO, was designed by exploring a novel sensing mechanism, i.e., the rotation of the N-N single bond of a coumarin derivative. FP-NO was prepared by incorporating a recognition unit, thiosemicarbazide moiety into a coumarin fluorophore. The weakly fluorescent FP-NO quickly and selectively reacts with NO to form a highly fluorescent product, FP-P. Such an enhancement of fluorescence emission allows NO detection with high sensitivity. The detection limit was 47.6 nM. The reaction mechanism was validated by HRMS titration analysis and the "OFF-ON" fluorescence response mechanism was rationalized by theoretical computation. FP-NO is biocompatible and live cell membrane permeable. The feasibility of FP-NO as the fluorescence probe for imaging and flow cytometry analysis of exogenous NO in MCF-7 cells and exogenous NO production in inflamed J774A.1 macrophage cells was then evaluated. Visualization of exogenous and endogenous NO production in live zebrafish was then achieved, implying the potential application of FP-NO in the studies of the NO roles in live organisms.

Abstract
Photoinduced electron transfers in different conjugated donor polymer containing with PC60BM as the acceptor (X3:PC60BM and X6:PC60BM) were theoretically investigated. A detailed theoretical analysis of Marcus electron transfer rate in an external electric field was also performed. By discussing the effect of electric field on ΔG, λ, VDA and charge separation rate, we have come to some conclusions. The results reveal that the free energy change and electronic coupling matrix are significantly influence by the vector properties of external electric field. Thus, the electron transfer process appears critically influenced by external electric fields. Our results will provide meaningful information on enhancing the photoelectric conversion efficiencies of BHJ solar cells.

Abstract
To study the hydrogen bonds upon photoexcited, the time dependent density function method (TD DFT) was performed to investigate the excited state hydrogen bond properties of between o-nitroaniline (ONA) and formaldehyde (CH2O). The optimized structures of the complex and the monomers both in the ground state and the electronically excited states are calculated using DFT and TD DFT method respectively. Quantum chemical calculations of the electronic and vibrational absorption spectra are also carried out by TD DFT method at the different level. The complex ONA⋯CH2O forms the intramolecular hydrogen bond and intermolecular hydrogen bonds. Since the strength of hydrogen bonds can be measured by studying the vibrational absorption spectra of the characteristic groups on the hydrogen bonding acceptor and donor, it evidently confirms that the hydrogen bonds is strengthened in the S1/S2/T1 excited states upon photoexcitation. As a result, the hydrogen bonds cause that the CH stretch frequency of the proton donor CH2O has a blue shift, and the electron excitations leads to a frequency red shift of NO and NH stretch modes in the o-nitroaniline(ONA) and a small frequency blue shift of CH stretch mode in the formaldehyde(CH2O) in the S1 and S2 excited states. The excited states S1, S2 and T1 are locally excited states where only the ONA moiety is excited, but the CH2O moiety remains in its ground state.

Abstract
Excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) is a photoinduced process strongly associated to hydrogen bonding within a molecular framework. In this manuscript, we computed potential energy data using Time Dependent Density Functional Theory (TDDFT) for triphenyl-substituted heterocycles, which evidenced an energetically favorable proton transfer on the excited state (i.e., ESIPT) but not on the ground state. Moreover, we describe how changes on heterocyclic functionalities, based on imidazole, oxazole, and thiazole systems, affect the ESIPT process that converts an enolic species to a ketonic one through photon-induced proton transfer. Structural and photophysical data were obtained theoretically by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations and contrasted for the three heterocyclics. Different functionals were used, but B3LYP was the one that adequately predicted absorption data. It was observed that the intramolecular hydrogen bond is strengthened in the excited state, supporting the occurrence of ESIPT. Finally, it was observed that, with the formation of the excited state, there is a decrease in electronic density at the oxygen atom that acts as proton donor, while there is a substantial increase in the corresponding density at the nitrogen atom that serves as proton acceptor, thus, indicating that proton transfer is indeed favored after photon absorption.
