Plasmonic phenomena in molecular junctions: principles and applications

Molecular junctions are building blocks for constructing future nanoelectronic devices that enable the investigation of a broad range of electronic transport properties within nanoscale regions. Crossing both the nanoscopic and mesoscopic length scales, plasmonics lies at the intersection of the macroscopic photonics and nanoelectronics, owing to their capability of confining light to dimensions far below the diffraction limit. Research activities on plasmonic phenomena in molecular electronics started around 2010, and feedback between plasmons and molecular junctions has increased over the past years. These efforts can provide new insights into the near-field interaction and the corresponding tunability in properties, as well as resultant plasmon-based molecular devices. This Review presents the latest advancements of plasmonic resonances in molecular junctions and details the progress in plasmon excitation and plasmon coupling. We also highlight emerging experimental approaches to unravel the mechanisms behind the various types of light-matter interactions at molecular length scales, where quantum effects come into play. Finally, we discuss the potential of these plasmonic-electronic hybrid systems across various future applications, including sensing, photocatalysis, molecular trapping and active control of molecular switches.

In Situ Direct Monitoring of the Morphological Transformation of Single Au Nanostars Induced by Iodide through Dual-Laser Dark-Field Microscopy: Unexpected Mechanism and Sensing Applications

Single nanoparticle imaging is a significant technique to help reveal the reaction mechanism and provides insight into the nanoparticle transformation. Here, we monitor the in situ morphological transformation of Au nanostars (GNSs) induced by iodide (I⁻) in real time using dark-field microscopy (DFM) with 638 nm red (R) and 534 nm green (G) laser coillumination. The two lasers are selected because the longitudinal localized surface plasmon resonance of GNSs is located at 638 nm and that for GNSs after transformation is at 534 nm. Interestingly, I⁻ can interact with GNSs directly without the engagement of other reagents, and upon increasing I⁻ concentrations, GNSs undergo color changes from red to orange, yellow, and green under DFM. Accordingly, green/red channel intensities (G/R ratios) are extracted by obtaining red and green channel intensities of single nanoparticles to weigh the morphological changes and quantify I⁻. A single nanoparticle sensor is constructed for I⁻ detection with a detection limit of 6.9 nM. Finally, a novel mechanism is proposed to elucidate this shape transformation. I⁻ absorbed onto the surface of GNSs binds with Au atoms to form AuI⁻, lowering the energy of its bond with other Au atoms, which facilitates the diffusion of this atom across the nanoparticle surface to low-energy sites at the concaves, thus deforming to spherical Au nanoparticles.

Spectral Dependence of the Energy Transfer from Photosynthetic Complexes to Monolayer Graphene

Fluorescence excitation spectroscopy at cryogenic temperatures carried out on hybrid assemblies composed of photosynthetic complexes deposited on a monolayer graphene revealed that the efficiency of energy transfer to graphene strongly depended on the excitation wavelength. The efficiency of this energy transfer was greatly enhanced in the blue-green spectral region. We observed clear resonance-like behavior for both a simple light-harvesting antenna containing only two chlorophyll molecules (PCP) and a large photochemically active reaction center associated with the light-harvesting antenna (PSI-LHCI), which pointed towards the general character of this effect.

Enhanced Electrochemistry of Single Plasmonic Nanoparticles

The structure-function relationship of plasmon enhanced electrochemistry (PEEC) is of great importance for the design of efficient PEEC catalyst, but is rarely investigated at single nanoparticle level for the lack of efficient nanoscale methodology. Herein, we report the utilization of nanoparticle impact electrochemistry to allow single nanoparticle PEEC, where the effect of incident light on the plasmonic Ag/Au nanoparticles for accelerating Co-MOFNs catalyzed hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is systematically explored. It is found that the plasmon excited hot carrier injection can lower the reaction activation energy, resulting in a much promoted reaction probability and the integral charge generated from individual collisions. Besides, a plasmonic nanoparticle filtering method is established to effectively distinguish different plasmonic nanoparticles. This work provides a unique view in understanding the intrinsic physicochemical properties for PEEC at the nano-confined domains.
