Direct Extraction of Sodium Hydroxide by Calix[4]pyrrole-Based Ion-Pair Receptors

Synergistic regulation of chloride anion recognition using a triple-functional sites receptor with two different cationic effectors

The synergistic regulation of the multi-functional sites on one receptor molecule with different cationic effectors for anion recognition is scarce to be well understood from the experiment and theory. In this work, a new anion receptor with three functional zones including ether hole, biurea and double bipyridine groups (EUPR) is designed expecting to enhance the chloride anion recognition together with a rational synthesis path being proposed based on four simple and mature organic reaction steps. The conformational structures of the designed receptor EUPR and the binding behaviors for three kinds of ions (Cl-, Na+, and Ag+) are deeply investigated by using density functional theoretical calculations. It is found that Cl- binding via the hydrogen bond interaction can be significantly enhanced and synergistically regulated by the two kinds of cations and the corresponding conformational changes of receptor EUPR. Especially, the conformational pre-organization of receptor caused by the encapsulation of sodium ion into ether hole is benefit to the binding for Cl- in both thermodynamics and kinetics. Na+ binding, in turn, can ever be enhanced by chloride anion, whereas it seems that Ag+ binding cannot always be enhanced by chloride anion, reflecting an electrical complementary matching and mutual enhancement effect for different counter ions. Moreover, solvent effect calculations indicate that EUPR may be an ideal candidate structure for Cl- recognition by strategy of counter ion enhancement in water. Additionally, a visual study of intermolecular noncovalent interaction (NCI) and molecular electrostatic potential (ESP) are used for the analysis on the nature of interactions between receptor and bound ions.

Probing and evaluating transmembrane chloride ion transport in double walled trifluorophenyl/phthalimide extended calix[4]pyrrole-based supramolecular receptors

Therapeutic applications have sparked increased interest in the use of synthetic anion receptors for ion transport across lipid membranes. In this context, the construction of synthetic transmembrane transporters for the physiologically important chloride ion is currently of enormous interest. As a result, considerable effort is being devoted to the design and synthesis of artificial transmembrane chloride ion transporters. However, only inadequate progress has been made in developing macrocyclic chloride ion transporters using the fundamental principles of supramolecular chemistry, and hence this field entails fostering investigations. In this investigation, the synthesis of two new double walled trifluorophenyl/phthalimide extended calix[4]pyrrole (C4P) receptors (3 and 7) has been successfully reported. 1H-NMR titration and HRMS studies confirmed the 1 : 1 binding stoichiometry of the chloride ion with these receptors in the solution phase (only receptor 3b was studied by 1H-NMR). Regarding ion transport of 3b and 7, when studied in the HPTS-based vesicular system, 3b showed better activity with an EC50 value of 0.39 μM. The detailed ion transport studies on 3b have revealed that ion transport occurs through the Cl-/NO3- antiport mode.

Tunable Pnictogen Bonding at the Service of Hydroxide Transport across Phospholipid Bilayers

Our growing interest in the design of pnictogen-based strategies for anion transport has prompted an investigation into the properties of three simple triarylcatecholatostiboranes (1-3) of the general formula (o-C6Cl4O2)SbAr3 with Ar = Ph (1), o-tolyl (2), and o-xylyl (3) for the complexation and transport of hydroxide across phospholipid bilayers. A modified hydroxypyrene-1,3,6-trisulfonic acid (HPTS) assay carried out in artificial liposomes shows that 1 and 2 are potent hydroxide transporters while 3 is inactive. These results indicate that the steric hindrance imposed by the three o-xylyl groups prevents access by the hydroxide anion to the antimony center. Supporting this interpretation, 1 and 2 quickly react with TBAOH·30 H2O ([TBA]+ = [nBu4N]+) to form the corresponding hydroxoantimonate salts [nBu4N][1-OH] and [nBu4N][2-OH], whereas 3 resists hydroxide coordination and remains unperturbed. Moreover, the hydroxide transport activities of 1 and 2 are correlated to the +V oxidation state of the antimony atom as the parent trivalent stibines show no hydroxide transport activity.

Does Larger Cavity-Size Really Help Bigger Anions to Bind? A Scrutiny on Core-Expanded Calix[4]pyrroles and Their Properties

Calix[4]pyrroles are an important class of oligopyrrolic macrocycles and have found applications in many diverse fields including anion recognition. To modulate the properties of the calix[4]pyrrole, several structural modifications are realized. The core-expansion has attracted extra attention as it provides larger cavity-size compared to parent calix[4]pyrrole(s). This review highlights the synthetic development of various core-expanded calix[4]pyrroles and their applications in anion-binding properties. Emphasis is given to the changes in the binding properties observed with expanded versions of calix[4]pyrrole(s) in both solution and the solid states. The expanded versions of calix[4]pyrrole do not always show higher binding affinities for larger anions as anticipated. Rather, they display reduced affinities with the anions. The truncated form or asymmetric nature of the expanded versions of calix[4]pyrrole does not probably allow to access all the available binding sites for the anions and hence reduced binding affinities are observed. The receptors which contain a greater number of binding sites and are somehow rigid or preorganized apparently show enhanced binding affinities for anions. The relative binding constants for halide series indicate that the enlarged molecules are more beneficial for largest iodide among others. However, most of the receptors show selectivity towards smallest fluoride over other anions studied.

Exclusive ion recognition using host-guest sandwich complexes

Ion recognition in porous aqueous media utilizing polyethers involves the formation of 1 : 1 and higher-order host-guest complexes. The effectiveness of these interactions relies on the optimal size of the host cavity to encapsulate the guest ions. While liquid/liquid extraction based on host-guest interactions offers higher specificity in metal ion extraction, it results in the co-extraction of unwanted coordinating solvents and counter-anions. Therefore, an improved protocol is required by which the ion can be selectively trapped within the host cavity and simultaneously decrease the guest coordination with the outside environment. This study delves into the microscopic mechanisms underpinning the exclusive ion recognition through the formation of 2 : 1 host-guest sandwich complexes, which reduce metal coordination with solvent or counter-ions, ensuring selectivity. Our analysis shows that ions with a radius larger than the host cavity, such as cesium (Cs+), form stable host-guest sandwich complexes at elevated host concentrations. In this study, we performed molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the microscopic details of Cs+ interactions with open-chain and preorganized polyethers, namely podand, crown, and cryptand in electrolyte media. Our findings reveal that the formation of stable Cs+-crown sandwich complexes significantly reduces Cs+ coordination with H2O and NO3-. This loss of solute coordination leads to exclusivity in bound metal ions, offering a potential strategy for efficient solvent extraction.
