Abstract
Alkyldiarylsulfonium salts were synthesized by a combination of active sulfonium species, prepared through the activation of diarylsulfoxide, and alkyl nucleophiles. The isolated sulfonium salts were subjected to the allylation and cyclopropanation of the active methylene compounds and metal-free C(sp3)-C(sp2) couplings via oxyallyl cation intermediates under mild conditions. The series of reactions included an umpolung strategy for the coupling of alkyl nucleophiles and metal-free C-C bond formation using sulfonium salts.

Abstract
Catalytic asymmetric dearomatization of heteroaromatic compounds has received considerable attention in the last few years, since it allows for a fast expansion of the chemical space by converting relatively simple, flat molecules into complex, three dimensional structures with added value. Among different approaches, remarkable progress has been recently achieved by the development of organocatalytic dearomatization methods. In particular, the anion-binding catalysis technology has emerged as a potent alternative to metal catalysis, which together with the design of novel, tunable anion-receptor motifs, has provided new entries for the enantioselective dearomatization of heteroarenes through a chiral contact ion pair formation by activation of the electrophilic reaction partner. In this feature, we provide an overview of the different methodologies and advances in anion-binding catalyzed dearomatization reactions of different heteroarenes.

Abstract
2-Aminoallyl cations are versatile 1,3-dipoles that could potentially be used for diverse (3+n) cycloaddition reactions. Despite some preliminary studies, the asymmetric catalytic transformation of these species is still underdeveloped. We herein report a binuclear copper-catalyzed generation of 2-aminoallyl cations from ethynyl methylene cyclic carbamates and their enantioselective (3+2) cycloaddition reaction with indoles to construct chiral pyrroloindolines. This transformation features a novel C1,N-dipolar reactivity for 2-aminoallyl cations.

Abstract
A novel route to synthesize 1,4-dicarbonyl compounds is described. α,α-Dibromoketones generate zinc enolates through a diethylzinc-mediated halogen-metal exchange and react with α-bromocarbonyl compounds to furnish 1,4-dicarbonyl compounds via a second generation of zinc enolates. This cross-coupling reaction is enabled by the chemoselective formation of zinc enolates from α,α-dibromoketones in the presence of α-bromocarbonyl compounds. Chiral 1,4-dicarbonyl compounds can be obtained via the enantioselective bromination of aldehydes using a chiral secondary amine catalyst and a subsequent cross-coupling reaction between the resulting chiral α-bromoaldehydes and α,α-dibromoacetophenones.

Abstract
This review covers the synthetic applications of 1,4-dithianes, as well as derivatives thereof at various oxidation states. The selected examples show how the specific heterocyclic reactivity can be harnessed for the controlled synthesis of carbon-carbon bonds. The reactivity is compared to and put into context with more common synthetic building blocks, such as 1,3-dithianes and (hetero)aromatic building blocks. 1,4-Dithianes have as yet not been investigated to the same extent as their well-known 1,3-dithiane counterparts, but they do offer attractive transformations that can find good use in the assembly of a wide array of complex molecular architectures, ranging from lipids and carbohydrates to various carbocyclic scaffolds. This versatility arises from the possibility to chemoselectively cleave or reduce the sulfur-heterocycle to reveal a versatile C2-synthon.

Abstract
The (3 + 2) cycloaddition of various indoles with a dithioallyl cation affords dearomatized cyclopentannulated adducts, with complete control of regioselectivity and excellent chemo- and diastereoselectivity. The success of the reaction critically relies on the use of an excess of very strong Brønsted acid, which paradoxically prevents carbocationic side reactions. The reaction tolerates sensitive functionalities such as basic amines or free hydroxyls, and we demonstrate its use in late stage derivatization of highly functionalized, unprotected indoles.

Abstract
The unique structure of oxyallyls represents a significant challenge for their catalytic asymmetric applications. Herein, an unprecedented chiral imidodiphosphoric acid-catalytic enantioselective (3 + 3) cycloaddition between oxyallyl zwitterions generated in situ from α-haloketones and α-diazomethylphosphonates was developed. Pharmaceutically interesting chiral pyridazine-4(1H)-ones were obtained in up to 98% yields with excellent stereoselectivities (up to 99% ee, > 99:1 dr).

Abstract
A novel oxyallyl cation promoted semipinacol rearrangement of indole-type allylic alcohols was disclosed for the stereodivergent synthesis of spiro-indolines. A variety of spiro-indolines were obtained with moderate to good yields. Three contiguous stereocenters, two of which are vicinal quaternary centers, were effectively formed with good diastereoselectivity. It is worth noting that two diastereoisomers of rearranged products can be readily achieved by easily regulating the reaction conditions. This method may provide an applicable approach for the synthesis of natural indole alkaloids.

Abstract
An enantioselective anion-binding organocatalytic approach with versatile N,N-dialkylhydrazones (DAHs) as polarity-reversed (umpolung) nucleophiles is presented. For the application of this concept, a highly ordered hydrogen-bond (HB) network between a carefully selected CF3 -substituted triazole-based multidentate HB-donor catalyst, the ionic substrate and the hydrazone in a supramolecular chiral ion-pair complex was envisioned. The formation of such a network was further supported by both experimental and computational studies, which showed the crucial role of the anion as a template unit. The asymmetric Reissert-type reaction of quinolines as a model test reaction chemoselectively delivered highly enantiomerically enriched hydrazones (up 95:5 e.r.) that could be further derivatized to value-added compounds with up to three stereocenters.

Abstract
We report an Umpolung strategy of enol ethers to generate oxy-allyl cation equivalents based on the use of hypervalent iodine reagents. Under mild basic conditions, the addition of nucleophiles to aryloxy-substituted vinylbenziodoxolone (VBX) reagents, easily available in two steps from silyl alkynes, resulted in the stereoselective formation of substituted aryl enol ethers. The reaction was most efficient with phenols as nucleophiles, but preliminary results were also achieved for C- and N- nucleophiles. In absence of external nucleophiles, the 2-iodobenzoate group of the reagent was transferred. The obtained aryl enol ethers could then be transformed into α-difunctionalized ketones by oxidation. The described "allyl cation"-like reactivity contrast with the well-established "vinyl-cation" behavior of alkenyl iodonium salts.

Abstract
![]()
The synthesis of cyclohepta[b]indole derivatives
through the dearomative (4 + 3) cycloaddition reaction of 2-vinylindoles
or 4H-furo[3,2-b]indoles with in
situ generated oxyallyl cations is reported. Oxyallyl cations are
generated from α-bromoketones in the presence of a base and
a perfluorinated solvent. Cyclohepta[b]indole scaffolds
are obtained under mild reaction conditions, in the absence of expensive
catalysts, starting from simple reagents, in good to excellent yields
and with complete diasteroselectivity. Preliminary expansion of the
scope to 3-vinylindoles and to aza-oxyallyl cations is reported.

Abstract
Toward a method for direct conversion of alkenes to cyclic guanidines, we report that 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions of 2-amido-1,3-diamino allylic cations with alkenes provide a new method for direct cyclic guanidine annulation. Generated under oxidative conditions, the 2-amido-1,3-diaminoallyl cations react as 1,3-dipoles providing rapid access to 2-amino imidazolines through net (3 + 2) cycloadditions. The utility is demonstrated through a concise synthesis of the oroidin alkaloid, phakellin. The described 1,3-dipole also participates in net (4 + 3) cycloadditions with dienes.

Abstract
Unsaturated oxyallyl cations with a suitably positioned alkene bond undergo 5-exo-cyclization with the formation of vinylcyclopentane derivatives. Alkyne analogues provide allenes. The reaction proceeds with a moderate to excellent level of stereoselectivity and allows for asymmetric induction in the reaction with chiral substrate.

Abstract
Buxaustroines A-N (1-14), a series of triterpenoidal alkaloids featuring a novel 17(13→18)abeo motif, were obtained from the extract of Buxus austro-yunnanensis. Their structures were assigned based on NMR data analysis and X-ray diffraction crystallography. A putative biosynthetic pathway for one of the alkaloids from a co-isolate 15 is proposed. In the assessment of their bioactivities, some of the compounds displayed protective effects against doxorubicin-induced injury of myocardial cells. Preliminary structure-activity relationship studies of 1-14, which are based on the same skeleton, were conducted.

Abstract
An umpolung strategy to synthesize α,α'-substituted cyclic ketones through the nucleophilic addition of organoboronates to α-hydroxyl silyl enol ethers is described. The reaction proceeds via the trapping of in situ generated oxyallyl cations via the electrophilic deborylation of C(sp2) and C(sp) borates. This efficient and straightforward method provides direct access to α-substituted silyl enol ethers in high yield with complete regioselectivity. Desilylation in a one-pot procedure provides the corresponding α,α'-disubstituted ketones with high diastereoselectivity.

Abstract
Rocaglates are a family of natural products isolated from the genus Aglaia which possess a highly substituted cyclopenta[b]benzofuran skeleton and inhibit cap-dependent protein synthesis. Rocaglates are attractive compounds due to their potential for inhibiting tumor cell maintenance in vivo by specifically targeting eukaryotic initiation factor 4A (eIF4A) and interfering with recruitment of ribosomes to mRNA. In this paper, we describe an intercepted retro-Nazarov reaction utilizing intramolecular tosyl migration to generate a reactive oxyallyl cation on the rocaglate skeleton. Trapping of the oxyallyl cation with a diverse range of nucleophiles has been used to generate over 50 novel amidino-rocaglate (ADR) and amino-rocaglate derivatives. Subsequently, these derivatives were evaluated for their ability to inhibit cap-dependent protein synthesis where they were found to outperform previous lead compounds including the rocaglate hydroxamate CR-1-31-B.

Abstract
Our investigations on the reaction mechanism to account for regioselectivity on the addition of indoles to unsymmetrical silyloxyallyl cations are reported. Using both experimental and computational methods, we confirmed the significance of steric effects from the silyl ether group toward directing the inward approach of indoles, leading to nucleophilic attack at the less substituted electrophilic α'-carbon. The role of residual water toward accelerating the rate of reaction is established through stabilization of the participating silyloxyallyl cation.

Abstract
An expedient synthesis of tetrahydroindoles and tetrahydrocyclopenta[ b]pyrroles, highlighted by Brønsted acid catalyzed formal [2 + 2 + 1] annulation reaction, is reported. Using three readily accessible reaction components, i.e., an electrophilic species in silyloxyallyl cations and two distinct nucleophiles in silylenol ethers and amines, our chemistry enables the assembly and functionalization of these biologically important N-heterocycles in a highly modular manner.

Abstract
Highly enantioenriched 2,2-diarylethanols can be efficiently synthesized through the Friedel-Crafts alkylation of (hetero)arenes with configurationally labile α-bromoarylacetates. The substitution of highly diastereoenriched α-bromoarylacetates occurs in the presence of AgOTf, and the subsequent reduction affords diverse 2,2-diarylethanols with high yields and enantioselectivities up to 99 : 1 er. In addition, the application of this asymmetric synthetic methodology to the preparation of highly enantioenriched dihydrobenzofuran and indoline derivatives is demonstrated.

Abstract
We report an enantioconvergent approach for the functionalization of enamides at the β-carbon atom, which involves a chiral Brønsted acid induced tautomerization of 2-amidoallyl into 1-amidoallyl cations. These putative reactive intermediates were produced by ionization of racemic α-hydroxy enamides with a chiral Brønsted acid and captured with substituted indoles in a highly regio- and enantioselective manner.

Abstract
A new type of all-carbon 1,3-dipole precursor, 3-homoacylcoumarin, was employed for the stereoselective (3+2) cycloaddition with indandione alkylidenes to generate a series of coumarin/indandione-fused spirocyclopentanes bearing four contiguous stereogenic centers. While two reaction pathways progressed simultaneously, detailed mechanistic investigation revealed that the highly efficient stereoselective concerted route dominated the extremely slow stepwise pathway.

Abstract
Reported herein is the development of [3 + 3] cycloaddition reactions between oxyallyl cations and nitrones to yield 1,2-oxazinane heterocycles. Oxyallyl cation intermediates, generated in situ from α-tosyloxy ketones in the presence of hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP), a cosolvent, and a base, are found to react with a range of nitrones to afford 1,2-oxazinanes in good to high yields. The reactions are catalyzed by hydrogen-bond donors such as phenols and squaramides, and dramatically higher diastereoselectivities are observed with 4-nitrophenol.

Abstract
The enantioselective coupling of indoles with racemic α-tosyloxy ketones mediated by a chiral amino alcohol catalyst is studied with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The addition of indole to an oxyallyl cation intrinsically favors the (S,S) and (R,R) stereoisomeric products through electrostatic interactions in the transition state. Our model shows that the enantioselectivity is controlled by the cyclohexane moiety of the catalyst; selectivity diminishes upon removal of the cyclohexane ring. Substitution to enhance the enantioselectivity of this reaction is proposed.

Abstract
Herein, we report an improved protocol for the concise synthesis of functionalized 1,4- and 1,6-dicarbonyl-derived monosilyl enol ethers via ionization of α'-hydroxy silyl enol ethers to generate unsymmetrical silyloxyallyl cations that were subsequently captured by TBS silyl enolates. These transformations were efficiently performed in acetonitrile at room temperature by employing pyridinium triflate as a catalyst. Our new reaction conditions are operationally more practical and broaden the accessibility of various 1,4- and 1,6-dicarbonyl groups, which include diketone, ketoester, and ketothioester functionalities.
