Transient Formation and Reactivity of a High-Valent Nickel(IV) Oxido Complex

Altering the Localization of an Unpaired Spin in a Formal Ni(V) Species

The participation of both ligand and the metal center in the redox events has been recognized as one of the ways to attain the formal high valent complexes for the late 3d metals, such as Ni and Cu. Such an approach has been employed successfully to stabilize a Ni(III) bisphenoxyl diradical species in which there exist an equilibrium between the ligand and the Ni localized resultant spin. The present work, however, broadens the scope of the previously reported three oxidized equivalent species by conveying the approaches that tend to affect the reported equilibrium in CH3 CN at 233 K. Various spectroscopic characterization revealed that employing exogenous N-donor ligands like 1-methyl imidazole and pyridine favors the formation of the Ni centered localized spin though axial binding. In contrast, due to its steric hinderance, quinoline favors an exclusive ligand localized radical species. DFT studies shed light on the novel intermediates' complex electronic structure. Further, the three oxidized equivalent species with the Ni centered spin was examined for its hydrogen atom abstraction ability stressing their key role in alike reactions.

High-Valent Ni and Cu Complexes of a Tetraanionic Bis(amidateanilido) Ligand

High-valent metal species are often invoked as intermediates during enzymatic and synthetic catalytic cycles. Anionic donors are often required to stabilize such high-valent states by forming strong bonds with the Lewis acidic metal centers while decreasing their oxidation potentials. In this report, we discuss the synthesis of two high-valent metal complexes [ML]+ in which the NiIII and CuIII centers are ligated by a new tetradentate, tetraanionic bis(amidateanilido) ligand. [ML]+, obtained via chemical oxidation of ML, exhibits UV-vis-NIR, EPR, and XANES spectra characteristic of square planar, high-valent MIII species, suggesting the locus of oxidation for both [ML]+ is predominantly metal-based. This is supported by theoretical analyses, which also support the observed visible transitions as ligand-to-metal charge transfer transitions characteristic of square planar, high-valent MIII species. Notably, [ML]+ can also be obtained via O2 oxidation of ML due to its remarkably negative oxidation potentials (CuL/[CuL]+: -1.16 V, NiL/[NiL]+: -1.01 V vs Fc/Fc+ in MeCN). This demonstrates the exceptionally strong donating nature of the tetraanionic bis(amidateanilido) ligation and its ability to stabilize high-valent metal centers..

Synthesis and Characterization of a Masked Terminal Nickel-Oxide Complex

In exploring terminal nickel-oxo complexes, postulated to be the active oxidant in natural and non-natural oxidation reactions, we report the synthesis of the pseudo-trigonal bipyramidal NiII complexes (K)[NiII (LPh )(DMF)] (1[DMF]) and (NMe4 )2 [NiII (LPh )(OAc)] (1[OAc]) (LPh =2,2',2''-nitrilo-tris-(N-phenylacetamide); DMF=N,N-dimethylformamide; - OAc=acetate). Both complexes were characterized using NMR, FTIR, ESI-MS, and X-ray crystallography, showing the LPh ligand to bind in a tetradentate fashion, together with an ancillary donor. The reaction of 1[OAc] with peroxyphenyl acetic acid (PPAA) resulted in the formation of [(LPh )NiIII -O-H⋅⋅⋅OAc]2- , 2, that displays many of the characteristics of a terminal Ni=O species. 2 was characterized by UV-Vis, EPR, and XAS spectroscopies and ESI-MS. 2 decayed to yield a NiII -phenolate complex 3 (through aromatic electrophilic substitution) that was characterized by NMR, FTIR, ESI-MS, and X-ray crystallography. 2 was capable of hydroxylation of hydrocarbons and epoxidation of olefins, as well as oxygen atom transfer oxidation of phosphines at exceptional rates. While the oxo-wall remains standing, this complex represents an excellent example of a masked metal-oxide that displays all of the properties expected of the ever elusive terminal M=O beyond the oxo-wall.

Nickel macrocyclic complexes with porphyrazine and some [benzo]substituted, oxo and fluoro ligands: DFT analysis

By using quantum chemical calculation data obtained by the DFT method with the OPBE/TZVP and B3PW91/TZVP levels, the principal possibility of the existence of three heteroligand complexes of nickel, each of which was shown to contain in the inner coordination sphere either porphyrazine or di[benzo]- and tetra[benzo]porphyrazine, oxygen (O[Formula: see text] and fluorine (F[Formula: see text] ions. The data on the geometric parameters of the molecular structure of these complexes are presented; which shows that NiN4 chelate nodes, all metal-chelate and non-chelate cycles in each of these complexes, are strictly planar. The bond angles between two donor nitrogen atoms and a nickel atom are equal to 90[Formula: see text], while the bond angles between donor atoms N, Ni, and O or F, in most cases, albeit insignificantly, differ from this value. Nevertheless, the bond angles formed by Ni, O and F atoms are exactly 180[Formula: see text]. NBO analysis data for these complexes are presented; it was noted that the ground state of all these complexes was a spin doublet. It has been shown that a good agreement between the data obtained using the above two versions of the DFT method occurs. Also, standard thermodynamic parameters of formation (standard enthalpy [Formula: see text], entropy [Formula: see text] and Gibbs’s energy [Formula: see text] for the macrocyclic compounds under consideration were calculated.

Revealing the Structure of Transition Metal Complexes of Formaldoxime

Aerobic reactions of iron(III), nickel(II), and manganese(II) chlorides with formaldoxime cyclotrimer (tfoH₃) and 1,4,7-triazacyclononane (tacn) produce indefinitely stable complexes of general formula [M(tacn)(tfo)]Cl. Although the formation of formaldoxime complexes has been known since the end of 19th century and applied in spectrophotometric determination of d-metals (formaldoxime method), the structure of these coordination compounds remained elusive until now. According to the X-ray analysis, [M(tacn)(tfo)]⁺ cation has a distorted adamantane-like structure with the metal ion being coordinated by three oxygen atoms of deprotonated tfoH₃ ligand. The metal has a formal +4 oxidation state, which is atypical for organic complexes of iron and nickel. Electronic structure of [M(tacn)(tfo)]⁺ cations was studied by XPS, NMR, cyclic (CV) and differential pulse (DPV) voltammetries, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and DFT calculations. Unusual stabilization of high-valent metal ion by tfo^3- ligand was explained by the donation of electron density from the nitrogen atom to the antibonding orbital of the metal-oxygen bond via hyperconjugation as confirmed by the NBO analysis. All complexes [M(tacn)(tfo)]Cl exhibited high catalytic activity in the aerobic dehydrogenative dimerization of p-thiocresol under ambient conditions.

Proton Switch in the Secondary Coordination Sphere to Control Catalytic Events at the Metal Center: Biomimetic Oxo Transfer Chemistry of Nickel Amidate Complex

High-valent metal-oxo species are key intermediates for the oxygen atom transfer step in the catalytic cycles of many metalloenzymes. While the redox-active metal centers of such enzymes are typically supported by anionic amino acid side chains or porphyrin rings, peptide backbones might function as strong electron-donating ligands to stabilize high oxidation states. To test the feasibility of this idea in synthetic settings, we have prepared a nickel(II) complex of new amido multidentate ligand. The mononuclear nickel complex of this N5 ligand catalyzes epoxidation reactions of a wide range of olefins by using mCPBA as a terminal oxidant. Notably, a remarkably high catalytic efficiency and selectivity were observed for terminal olefin substrates. We found that protonation of the secondary coordination sphere serves as the entry point to the catalytic cycle, in which high-valent nickel species is subsequently formed to carry out oxo-transfer reactions. A conceptually parallel process might allow metalloenzymes to control the catalytic cycle in the primary coordination sphere by using proton switch in the secondary coordination sphere.

Nickel is a Different Pickle: Trends in Water Oxidation Catalysis for Molecular Nickel Complexes

The development of novel water oxidation catalysts is important in the context of renewable fuels production. Ligand design is one of the key tools to improve the activity and stability of molecular catalysts. The establishment of ligand design rules can facilitate the development of improved molecular catalysts. In this paper it is shown that chemical oxidants can be used to probe oxygen evolution activity for nickel-based systems, and trends are reported that can improve future ligand design. Interestingly, different ligand effects were observed in comparison to other first-row transition metal complexes. For example, nickel complexes with secondary amine donors were more active than with tertiary amine donors, which is the opposite for iron complexes. The incorporation of imine donor groups in a cyclam ligand resulted in the fastest and most durable nickel catalyst of our series, achieving oxygen evolution turnover numbers up to 380 and turnover frequencies up to 68 min-1 in a pH 5.0 acetate buffer using Oxone as oxidant. Initial kinetic experiments with this catalyst revealed a first order in chemical oxidant and a half order in catalyst. This implies a rate-determining oxidation step from a dimeric species that needs to break up to generate the active catalyst. These findings lay the foundation for the rational design of molecular nickel catalysts for water oxidation and highlight that catalyst design rules are not generally applicable for different metals.

Generation and Reactivity of a NiIII2(μ-1,2-peroxo) Complex

High-valent transition metal-oxo, -peroxo, and -superoxo complexes are crucial intermediates in both biological and synthetic oxidation of organic substrates, water oxidation, and oxygen reduction. While high-valent oxygenated complexes of Mn, Fe, Co, and Cu are increasingly well-known, high-valent oxygenated Ni complexes are comparatively rarer. Herein we report the isolation of such an unusual high-valent species in a thermally unstable Ni^III₂(μ-1,2-peroxo) complex, which has been characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption, NMR, and UV-vis spectroscopies. Reactivity studies show that this complex is stable toward dissociation of oxygen but reacts with simple nucleophiles and electrophiles.

Dialkyl Ether Formation at High-Valent Nickel

In this article, we investigated the I2-promoted cyclic dialkyl ether formation from 6-membered oxanickelacycles originally reported by Hillhouse. A detailed mechanistic investigation based on spectroscopic and crystallographic analysis revealed that a putative reductive elimination to forge C(sp3)-OC(sp3) using I2 might not be operative. We isolated a paramagnetic bimetallic NiIII intermediate featuring a unique Ni2(OR)2 (OR = alkoxide) diamond-like core complemented by a μ-iodo bridge between the two Ni centers, which remains stable at low temperatures, thus permitting its characterization by NMR, EPR, X-ray, and HRMS. At higher temperatures (>-10 °C), such bimetallic intermediate thermally decomposes to afford large amounts of elimination products together with iodoalkanols. Observation of the latter suggests that a C(sp3)-I bond reductive elimination occurs preferentially to any other challenging C-O bond reductive elimination. Formation of cyclized THF rings is then believed to occur through cyclization of an alcohol/alkoxide to the recently forged C(sp3)-I bond. The results of this article indicate that the use of F+ oxidants permits the challenging C(sp3)-OC(sp3) bond formation at a high-valent nickel center to proceed in good yields while minimizing deleterious elimination reactions. Preliminary investigations suggest the involvement of a high-valent bimetallic NiIII intermediate which rapidly extrudes the C-O bond product at remarkably low temperatures. The new set of conditions permitted the elusive synthesis of diethyl ether through reductive elimination, a remarkable feature currently beyond the scope of Ni.

High-Valent NiIII and NiIV Species Relevant to C-C and C-Heteroatom Cross-Coupling Reactions: State of the Art

Ni catalysis constitutes an active research arena with notable applications in diverse fields. By analogy with its parent element palladium, Ni catalysts provide an appealing entry to build molecular complexity via cross-coupling reactions. While Pd catalysts typically involve a M⁰/M^II redox scenario, in the case of Ni congeners the mechanistic elucidation becomes more challenging due to their innate properties (like enhanced reactivity, propensity to undergo single electron transformations vs. 2e⁻ redox sequences or weaker M–Ligand interaction). In recent years, mechanistic studies have demonstrated the participation of high-valent Ni^III and Ni^IV species in a plethora of cross-coupling events, thus accessing novel synthetic schemes and unprecedented transformations. This comprehensive review collects the main contributions effected within this topic, and focuses on the key role of isolated and/or spectroscopically identified Ni^III and Ni^IV complexes. Amongst other transformations, the resulting Ni^III and Ni^IV compounds have efficiently accomplished: i) C–C and C–heteroatom bond formation; ii) C–H bond functionalization; and iii) N–N and C–N cyclizative couplings to forge heterocycles.

Lewis versus Brønsted Acid Activation of a Mn(IV) Catalyst for Alkene Oxidation

Lewis acid (LA) activation by coordination to metal oxido species has emerged as a new strategy in catalytic oxidations. Despite the many reports of enhancement of performance in oxidation catalysis, direct evidence for LA-catalyst interactions under catalytically relevant conditions is lacking. Here, we show, using the oxidation of alkenes with H₂O₂ and the catalyst [Mn₂(μ-O)₃(tmtacn)₂](PF₆)₂ (1), that Lewis acids commonly used to enhance catalytic activity, e.g., Sc(OTf)₃, in fact undergo hydrolysis with adventitious water to release a strong Brønsted acid. The formation of Brønsted acids in situ is demonstrated using a combination of resonance Raman, UV/vis absorption spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, isotope labeling, and DFT calculations. The involvement of Brønsted acids in LA enhanced systems shown here holds implications for the conclusions reached in regard to the relevance of direct LA-metal oxido interactions under catalytic conditions.

Lewis acid activation of oxidation catalysts is proposed to be through binding of the Lewis acids to metal-oxo species. The activity of the catalyst [Mn₂(μ-O)₃(tmtacn)₂](PF₆)₂ in the oxidation of alkenes with H₂O₂ appears to correlate with the strength of the Lewis acid used for its activation. We show that the correlation arises from the relative propensity of the Lewis acids to generate Brønsted acids in situ.

Aerobic C-C and C-O bond formation reactions mediated by high-valent nickel species

Nickel complexes have been widely employed as catalysts in C-C and C-heteroatom bond formation reactions. While Ni(0), Ni(i), and Ni(ii) intermediates are most relevant in these transformations, recently Ni(iii) and Ni(iv) species have also been proposed to play a role in catalysis. Reported herein is the synthesis, detailed characterization, and reactivity of a series of Ni(ii) and Ni(iii) metallacycle complexes stabilized by tetradentate pyridinophane ligands with various N-substituents. Interestingly, while the oxidation of the Ni(ii) complexes with various other oxidants led to exclusive C-C bond formation in very good yields, the use of O₂ or H₂O₂ as oxidants led to formation of appreciable amounts of C-O bond formation products, especially for the Ni(ii) complex supported by an asymmetric pyridinophane ligand containing one tosyl N-substituent. Moreover, cryo-ESI-MS studies support the formation of several high-valent Ni species as key intermediates in this uncommon Ni-mediated oxygenase-type chemistry.

Preparation and Characterisation of a Bis-μ-Hydroxo-NiIII 2 Complex

Hydroxide-bridged high-valent oxidants have been implicated as the active oxidants in methane monooxygenases and other oxidases that employ bimetallic clusters in their active site. To understand the properties of such species, bis-μ-hydroxo-Ni^II ₂ complex (1) supported by a new dicarboxamidate ligand (N,N'-bis(2,6-dimethyl-phenyl)-2,2-dimethylmalonamide) was prepared. Complex 1 contained a diamond core made up of two Ni^II ions and two bridging hydroxide ligands. Titration of the 1 e^- oxidant (NH₄ )₂ [Ce^IV (NO₃ )₆ ] with 1 at -45 °C showed the formation of the high-valent species 2 and 3, containing Ni^II Ni^III and Ni^III ₂ diamond cores, respectively, maintaining the bis-μ-hydroxide core. Both complexes were characterised using electron paramagnetic resonance, X-ray absorption, and electronic absorption spectroscopies. Density functional theory computations supported the spectroscopic assignments. Oxidation reactivity studies showed that bis-μ-hydroxide-Ni^III ₂ 3 was capable of oxidizing substrates at -45 °C at rates greater than that of the most reactive bis-μ-oxo-Ni^III complexes reported to date.

An improved laboratory-based x-ray absorption fine structure and x-ray emission spectrometer for analytical applications in materials chemistry research

X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) and x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) are advanced x-ray spectroscopies that impact a wide range of disciplines. However, unlike the majority of other spectroscopic methods, XAFS and XES are accompanied by an unusual access model, wherein the dominant use of the technique is for premier research studies at world-class facilities, i.e., synchrotron x-ray light sources. In this paper, we report the design and performance of an improved XAFS and XES spectrometer based on the general conceptual design of Seidler et al. [Rev. Sci. Instrum. 85, 113906 (2014)]. New developments include reduced mechanical degrees of freedom, much-increased flux, and a wider Bragg angle range to enable extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurement and analysis for the first time with this type of modern laboratory XAFS configuration. This instrument enables a new class of routine applications that are incompatible with the mission and access model of the synchrotron light sources. To illustrate this, we provide numerous examples of x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES), EXAFS, and XES results for a variety of problems and energy ranges. Highlights include XAFS and XES measurements of battery electrode materials, EXAFS of Ni with full modeling of results to validate monochromator performance, valence-to-core XES for 3d transition metal compounds, and uranium XANES and XES for different oxidation states. Taken en masse, these results further support the growing perspective that modern laboratory-based XAFS and XES have the potential to develop a new branch of analytical chemistry.

H2O2 Oxidation by FeIII-OOH Intermediates and Its Effect on Catalytic Efficiency

The oxidation of the C–H and C=C bonds of hydrocarbons with H₂O₂ catalyzed by non-heme iron complexes with pentadentate ligands is widely accepted as involving a reactive Fe^IV=O species such as [(N4Py)Fe^IV=O]²⁺ formed by homolytic cleavage of the O–O bond of an Fe^III–OOH intermediate (where N4Py is 1,1-bis(pyridin-2-yl)-N,N-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)methanamine). We show here that at low H₂O₂ concentrations the Fe^IV=O species formed is detectable in methanol. Furthermore, we show that the decomposition of H₂O₂ to water and O₂ is an important competing pathway that limits efficiency in the terminal oxidant and indeed dominates reactivity except where only sub-/near-stoichiometric amounts of H₂O₂ are present. Although independently prepared [(N4Py)Fe^IV=O]²⁺ oxidizes stoichiometric H₂O₂ rapidly, the rate of formation of Fe^IV=O from the Fe^III–OOH intermediate is too low to account for the rate of H₂O₂ decomposition observed under catalytic conditions. Indeed, with excess H₂O₂, disproportionation to O₂ and H₂O is due to reaction with the Fe^III–OOH intermediate and thereby prevents formation of the Fe^IV=O species. These data rationalize that the activity of these catalysts with respect to hydrocarbon/alkene oxidation is maximized by maintaining sub-/near-stoichiometric steady-state concentrations of H₂O₂, which ensure that the rate of the H₂O₂ oxidation by the Fe^III–OOH intermediate is less than the rate of the O–O bond homolysis and the subsequent reaction of the Fe^IV=O species with a substrate.

Improving the quality of XAFS data

Following the Q2XAFS Workshop and Satellite to IUCr Congress 2017 on `Data Acquisition, Treatment, Storage - quality assurance in XAFS spectroscopy', a summary is given of the discussion on different aspects of a XAFS experiment that affect data quality. Some pertinent problems ranging from sources and minimization of noise to harmonic contamination and uncompensated monochromator glitches were addressed. Also, an overview is given of the major limitations and pitfalls of a selection of related methods, such as photon-out spectroscopies and energy-dispersive XAFS, and of increasingly common applications, namely studies at high pressure, and time-resolved investigations of catalysts in operando. Advice on how to avoid or deal with these problems and a few good practice recommendations are reported, including how to correctly report results.

Flexibility and lability of a phenyl ligand in hetero-organometallic 3d metal-Sn(iv) compounds and their catalytic activity in Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of cyclohexanone

The single compartmental Schiff base N,N'-ethylenebis(salicylaldimine) (H₂L) and [SnPh₂Cl₂] were utilized to synthesize heterobimetallic 3d metal-Sn complexes, the Co^IIISn^IV compound [{SnPhCl₂}(1κO²N²,2κO²-μ-L)(μ-OMe){CoPh}] (1), the Ni^IISn^IV compound [{SnPh₂Cl₂}(1κO²N²,2κO²-μ-L)Ni] (2) and the Cu^IISn^IV compound [{SnPh₂Cl₂}(1κO²N²,2κO²-μ-L)Cu] (3). Attempting to prepare the ethoxido bridged compound analogous to 1 (in ethanol) gives the phenylcobalt(iii) complex [Co(κO²N²)Ph(H₂O)] (1A). Single crystal X-ray structure analyses reveal that 1 is derived from an intermetallic (Sn to Co) phenyl shift and that 1A is a transmetallated product; in compounds 2 and 3, the phenyl groups remain coordinated to Sn^IV but one of the π rings interacts with the 3d-metal. Thus, while systems 1 and 1A show the lability of the phenyl ligand, 2 and 3 reveal its flexible nature. Theoretical DFT calculations demonstrate that the conceivable Ph group shift occurs in the oxidized Co^III intermediate [{Sn^IVPh₂Cl₂}(κO₂N₂-μ-L){Co^III(MeO)}] (5) rather than in the corresponding Co^II species [{Sn^IVPh₂Cl₂}(κO₂N₂-μ-L){Co^II(MeOH)}] (4). Their catalytic studies in the Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of cyclohexanone into ε-caprolactone with two different oxidants reveal that the sacrificial aldehyde method (with dioxygen/benzaldehyde) is better than that with aqueous H₂O₂ (30%). The effects of various reaction parameters such as solvent, catalyst amount, temperature, time and heating method were studied allowing the achievement of yields up to 83% with 89% selectivity.

Valence Interconversion of Octahedral Nickel(II/III/IV) Centers

Three oxidation states (+2, +3, +4) of an octahedral nickel center were stabilized in a newly prepared RhNiRh trinuclear complex, [Ni{Rh(apt)₃ }₂ ]ⁿ⁺ (apt=3- aminopropanethiolate), in which the nickel center was bound by six thiolato donors sourced from two redox-inert fac-[Rh^III (apt)₃ ] octahedral units. The three oxidation states of the octahedral nickel center were fully characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, as well as spectroscopic, electrochemical, and magnetic measurements; all three were interconvertible, and the conversion was accompanied by changes in color, magnetism, and Jahn-Teller distortion.
