Abstract
The various methods for the de novo asymmetric synthesis of the pyranose sugars are surveyed. The presentation begins with the work of Masamune and Sharpless with the use of the Sharpless asymmetric epoxidation for the synthesis of all eight l-hexoses. The development of other asymmetric reactions and their application for the synthesis of specific hexopyranoses are further discussed. The broad application of the Achmatowicz rearrangement with asymmetric catalysis, for the synthesis of various pyranones and imino sugars, is also presented. Finally, the use of a diastereoselective palladium-catalyzed glycosylation with the Achmatowicz approach for the synthesis of oligosaccharides and applications to medicinal chemistry are discussed.

Abstract
A cinchona-alkaloid catalyzed asymmetric Kornblum DeLaMare rearrangement has been developed. Thus, enantioenriched 4-hydroxyenones are prepared from dienes by a two-step sequence involving photochemical dioxygenation and chiral base-catalyzed desymmetrization of the resulting endoperoxides.

Abstract
4-Deoxy-l-hexoses were synthesized starting from our previously reported reagent 1 and (R)-benzyl glycidyl ether, which led in few steps to a substituted dihydropyran 6. The stereocontrolled hydroxylation of the latter afforded the corresponding 4-deoxy-l-hexoses 7a, 9, and 11. The same procedure, starting from (S)-benzyl glycidyl ether, enabled the preparation of their d-series enantiomers.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] A novel synthetic path to a potential intermediate for the synthesis of pseudomonic acid B was established by employing enantioselective deprotonation of a meso-cycloheptanone derivative bearing hydroxy groups at the 3,4,5,6-positions with lithium (S,S')-alpha,alpha'-dimethyldibenzylamide as a key step.

Abstract
The first enantioselective synthesis of (+)-dihydrocuscohygrine 1 and cuscohygrine 2 is presented. 1 was obtained in nine steps and 30% overall yield with a ruthenium-catalyzed tandem ring rearrangement metathesis key step starting from enantiomerically pure cycloheptene-1,3,5-triol derivative 6. The unknown absolute configuration of natural dihydrocuscohygrine 1 could be determined as (S,S)-(-). Cuscohygrine 2 was obtained by Jones oxidation of 1 in quantitative yield but unfortunately with complete epimerization.

Abstract
trans-6-Aminocyclohept-3-enols 18 and ent-18 are new designed polyfunctionalized chiral building blocks for piperidine alkaloids synthesis and are prepared in high yields from the enzymatically derived cyclohept-3-ene-1,6-diol monoacetate (-)-8. Efficient highly enantioselective syntheses of cis-4-hydroxypipecolic acid (1) and piperidines 3 and 4, in both enantiomeric forms, are described. [reaction: see text]

Abstract
An expeditious approach to various protected hexoses has been developed by the use of the Sharpless catalytic asymmetric dihydroxylation reaction. Applying the Sharpless catalytic asymmetric dihydroxylation reaction on vinylfuran, diols with high enantioexcess are produced. The resulting diols can be stereoselectively transformed into either protected D- or L-mannose in five steps and approximately 39% yield from furfural. Similarly, both D- and L-talose and gulose have been synthesized in 19% overall yields, respectively. Using a modified strategy, both protected D- and L-gulo- and allo-sugar-delta-lactones were synthesized in eight steps and approximately 20%, overall yield from furfural.

Abstract
Biocatalytically generated enantiopure intermediates are exceptionally valuable as starting materials in the syntheses of enantiopure complex organic compounds. Cyclic intermediates are particularly useful because of their inherent tendency to undergo highly diastereoselective transformations. Techniques such as the asymmetrization of meso compounds making either enantiomer available in superior yields, and the employment of enzymes at low temperatures giving improved enantioselectivities promise to facilitate the preparation of such intermediates. Because of their functional group compatibility, their environmentally safe nature, and often their low cost, biocatalysts have become a well recognized means of introducing enantiopurity in organic synthesis.
