Abstract
Dehalogenative deuteration reactions are generally performed through metal-mediated processes. This report demonstrates a mild protocol for hydrodehalogenation and dehalogenative deuteration of aryl/heteroaryl halides (39 examples) using a reduced odd alternant hydrocarbon phenalenyl under transition metal-free conditions and has been employed successfully for the incorporation of deuterium in various biologically active compounds. The combined approach of experimental and theoretical studies revealed a single electron transfer-based mechanism.

Abstract
Due to special properties of ILs (Ionic Liquids) like their wide liquid range, good solvating ability, negligible vapour pressure, non-inflammability, environment friendly medium, high thermal stability, easy recycling and rate promoters etc. they are used in organic synthesis. The investigation for the replacement of organic solvents in organic synthesis is a growing area of interest due to increasing environmental issues. Therefore, ionic liquids have attracted the attention of chemists and act as a catalyst and reaction medium in organic reaction with high activity. There is no doubt that ionic liquids have become a major subject of study for modern chemistry. In comparison to traditional processes the use of ionic liquids resulted in improved, complimentary or alternative selectivities in organic synthesis. The present manuscript reported the synthesis of multiple nitrogen containing five-membered heterocyclic compounds using ionic liquids. This review covered interesting discoveries in the past few years.

Abstract
2-Azolyl-3-enaminones (la–e) react with ethyl cyanoacetate to yield 2-pyridones or 2-aminopyridines depending on the reaction conditions. The reaction of la with benzoylacetonitrile afforded a pyridine derivative. Condensation of heteroaromatic aminoazoles with la–e afforded azolopyrimidines. HMBC and NOE difference experiments assisted the assignment of structures to the reaction products.

Abstract
A direct one-pot synthesis of chromeno-annulated imidazo[1,2- a]pyridines is achieved by the reaction of 2-amino-1-(2-ethoxy-2-oxoethyl)pyridinium salts with 2-bromoarylaldehydes using Pd(TFA)2 as a catalyst and Cu(OAc)2 as an oxidant. The overall strategy involves tandem base-mediated amidation and Knoevenagel condensation, followed by palladium-catalyzed Wacker type oxidation and intramolecular C-O coupling reaction. The method is simple, tolerates different functional groups, and gives moderate to good yields of chromeno[2',3':4,5]imidazo[1,2- a]pyridin-12-one derivatives. The developed tandem reaction was also successfully applied for the synthesis of pyrano-fused imidazo[1,2- a]pyridines by using 3-bromo-3-arylacrylaldehydes.

Abstract
One-pot synthesis of 2-phenylimidazo[1,2-α]pyridines from acetophenone, [Bmim]Br3 and 2-aminopyridine under solvent-free conditions in the presence of Na2CO3, gave the corresponding 2-phenylimidazo[1,2-α]pyridines in excellent yields ranging from 72% to 89%.

Abstract
A short and efficient route to a broad range of imidazo[1,2-a]pyridines from 2-aminopyridines and acetophenones is achieved by a tandem, one-pot process starting with an Ortoleva-King reaction. Optimal conditions for the first step were established after examining various reaction parameters (solvent, reagent ratios, and temperature). The conditions identified (1st step, neat, 2.3 equiv of 2-aminopyridine, 1.20 equiv of I(2), 4 h, 110 °C; 2nd step, NaOH(aq), 1 h, 100 °C) resulted in the formation of imidazo[1,2-a]pyridines in 40-60% yields. The synthesis is compatible with various functionalities (OH, NMe(2), Br, OMe). Products containing a 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl) substituent undergo excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) in nonpolar and polar-aprotic solvents. Although ESIPT-type emission in nonpolar solvents is weak, the Stokes shifts are very high (11000 cm(-1)). The comparison of the properties of six ESIPT-capable imidazo[1,2-a]pyridines shows the influence of various substituents on emission characteristics. All of them also display strong, solid-state emission in blue-green-yellow region. 2-Aryl-imidazo[1,2-a]pyridines not capable of ESIPT emit in the blue region, displaying high fluorescence quantum yield.

Abstract
The reaction between benzynes and imidazo[1,2-a]pyridines (pyrimidines) to form benzo[a]imidazo[5,1,2-cd]indolizines and 2,3,9c-triazocyclopenta[j,k]fluorenes has been studied computationally and experimentally. It is found that these reactions take place via tandem [(pi)8(s) + (pi)2(s)] and [(sigma)2(s) + (pi)6(s) + (sigma)2(s)] processes. The [8 + 2] cycloaddition steps are essentially barrierless, and the aromatization steps occur via highly synchronous aromatic transition structures. From an experimental standpoint, the reaction is feasible under microwave irradiation and using 2-(trimethylsilyl)phenyl triflates as benzyne precursors. Depending on the substitution pattern in the starting triflate a complete regiocontrol of the reaction can be achieved. The tetracyclic compounds thus prepared emitted blue light when excited at 365 nm and exhibited interesting photophysical properties.

Abstract
The first continuous flow synthesis of imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine-2-carboxylic acids directly from 2-aminopyridines and bromopyruvic acid has been developed, representing a significant advance over the corresponding in-flask method. The process was applied to the multistep synthesis of imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine-2-carboxamides, including a Mur ligase inhibitor, using a two microreactor, multistep continuous flow process without isolation of intermediates.

Abstract
Reaction of PEG-bound sulfonic acid with thionyl chloride formed the difunctionalised PEG-supported sulfonyl chloride, which was treated with α-hydroxyketones, followed by treatment with 2-aminopyridine in the presence of potassium carbonate efficient to afford imidazo[1,2- a]pyridines in good yields with a facile work-up procedure.

Abstract
Rapid progress in the synthetic application of benzotriazole derivatives in the last 20 years has resulted in over 1000 scientific papers on the subject. This fact is reflected in Section 5.01.7, which involves almost a half of the volume of this chapter. The section is arranged according to hybridization of the C-α atom and atomic numbers of the atoms in positions β and γ to allow an easy access to the material of interest. Recent discovery of copper catalysis in [3+2] cycloadditions of azides to acetylenes, the so-called ‘click chemistry’, which boosted application of the 1,2,3-triazole derivatives, especially in medicinal chemistry, is presented in Section 5.01.9. From the point of view of practical applications, Section 5.01.11 is organized according to the number, position, and combination of the substituents at the aromatic rings. Another novel feature that has no precedence in the previous editions of Comprehensive Heterocyclic Chemistry is an addition of triazole and benzotriazole complexes with various transitions metals to Section 5.01.4.
