Abstract
We report the crystal structure of a substoichiometric, HMPA-trisolvated lithium pinacolone enolate tetramer (LiOPin)4·HMPA3 abbreviated as T3. In this tetramer one HMPA binds to lithium more strongly than the other two causing a reduction in spatial symmetry with corresponding loss of C3 symmetry. A variety of NMR experiments, including HMPA titration, diffusion coefficient-formula weight (D-FW) analysis, and other multinuclear one- and two-dimensional NMR techniques reveal that T3 is the major species in hydrocarbon solution when more than 0.6 equiv of HMPA is present. Due to a small amount of moisture from HMPA or air leaking into the solution, a minor complex was identified and confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis as a mixed aggregate containing enolate, lithium hydroxide, and HMPA in a 4:2:4 ratio, [(LiOPin)4·(LiOH)2·HMPA4], that we refer to as pseudo-T4. A tetra-HMPA-solvated lithium cyclopentanone enolate tetramer was also prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction, leading to the conclusion that steric effects dominate the formation and solvation of the pinacolone aggregates. An unusual mixed aggregate consisting of pinacolone enolate, lithium diisopropyl amide, lithium oxide, and HMPA in the ratio 5:1:1:2 is also described.

Abstract
Homoenolate, a species containing anionic carbon beta to a carbonyl group or a moiety that can be transformed into a carbonyl group, is a potential three carbon synthon. Recent introduction of a protocol for the generation of homoenolate directly from enals by NHC (nucleophilic heterocyclic carbene) catalysis has made it possible to explore the synthetic utility of this unique reactive intermediate. The versatility of NHC-bound homoenolate is illustrated by its annulation with various carbonyl compounds leading to gamma-butyrolactones, spiro-gamma-butyrolactones, and delta-lactones. Interception of homoenolate with imines afforded gamma-lactams and bicyclic beta-lactams. Formation of cyclopentenes and spirocyclopentanones respectively by reaction with enones and dienones is also noteworthy. This tutorial review focuses on these and other types of reactions which attest to the synthetic potential of NHC-bound homoenolates in organic synthesis.

Abstract
Nucleophilic heterocyclic carbene-catalyzed cyclopentannulation of enals and chalcones via homoenolate has been observed for the first time. Serendipitously, the reaction lead to a very efficient synthesis of 3,4-trans-disubstituted-1-aryl cyclopentenes instead of the expected cyclopentanones. The strategy works well with thienylidene tetralone also, leading to the tricyclic cyclopentene derivative.

Abstract
The reaction of alpha-lithio allyl aryl sulfides, generated by treatment with n-BuLi and chiral ligands at -78 degrees C, with ketones was examined. The alpha-addition products were formed in preference to the gamma-addition products. The enantioselectivity of the alpha-addition products varied depending on the chiral ligand, and bis(oxazoline)-(t)Bu showed the highest enantioselectivity. Chirality 16:86-89, 2004.

Abstract
Reactions of anions derived from chiral nonracemic allyl, crotyl, and cinnamyl bicyclic C(2)-symmetrical phosphonamides with alpha, beta-unsaturated cyclic ketones, esters, lactones, and lactams take place at the gamma-position of the reagents. The products are diastereomerically pure or enriched beta-substituted carbonyl compounds. The method also provides easy access to vicinal substitution of as many as three stereogenic centers including in some cases quaternary carbon atoms, in a one-pot sequence.

Abstract
In HMPA-THF solution, lithiated 1-naphthylacetonitrile undergoes highly syn-selective addition to aromatic aldehydes, providing the first access to such syn-aldols. Syn-selectivity is also observed with two other arylacetonitriles. Aldolate equilibration and crossover experiments demonstrate that HMPA promotes retro-aldol reaction and that aldol diastereoselectivity under these conditions is thermodynamically controlled.
