Abstract
The construction of vinyl selenone on a furanoside led to a highly reactive synthetic intermediate methyl-α-D-2-selenonyl pent-2-enofuranoside composed of a masked aldehyde, an electron-deficient double bond along with an excellent leaving group. This new Michael acceptor on reactions with different nucleophiles afforded bicyclic azasugars, cyclopropanated carbohydrate, dihydrofuran- and dihydroisoxazole- substituted furanosides, and isonucleosides in moderate to good yields. Hydrolysis of the hemiacetal linkage of some of these modified carbohydrates afforded enantiopure aziridines, nitrocyclopropane, and dihydrofuran.

Abstract
A wide range of stable vinyl selenone-modified furanosides has been synthesized for the first time. These 2π-partners undergo 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions with a wide range of organic azides to afford enantiopure trisubstituted triazoles. Furanosyl rings opened up during triazole synthesis to generate polyfunctionalized molecules, ready to undergo further transformations. This strategy is one of the most convenient methods for the synthesis of enantiopure 1,4,5-trisubstituted 1,2,3-triazoles where the chiral components are attached to C-4 or C-5 position of triazole ring. These triazoles are formed in a regioselective manner, and several pairs of regioisomeric triazoles have also been synthesized. The approach affords densely functionalized triazoles, which are amenable to further modifications because of the presence of aldehyde and hydroxyl groups. This powerful and practical route adds to the arsenals of chemists and biologists interested in the synthesis and applications of triazoles.

Abstract
The marine-derived halipeptins A (1a) and D (1d) and their analogues 3a, 3d and 4a, 4d were synthesized starting from building blocks 10, 13, 14a or 14d, 15, and 16. The first strategy for assembling the building blocks, involving a macrolactamization reaction to form the 16-membered ring hydroxy thioamide 52d as a precursor, furnished the epi-isoleucine analogue (4d) of halipeptin D, whereas a second approach involving thiazoline formation prior to macrolactamization led to a mixture of halipeptins A (1a) and D (1d) and their analogues 3a, 3d (epimers at the indicated site) and 4a, 4d (epimers at the indicated site). The same route starting with D-Ala resulted in the exclusive formation of the epimeric halipeptin D analogue 3d. The synthesized halipeptins, together with the previously constructed oxazoline analogues 5d and 6d, were subjected to biological evaluation revealing anti-inflammatory properties for 1a, 1d, and 6d while being noncytotoxic against human colon cancer cells (HCT-116).

Abstract
We have achieved the total synthesis of (-)-verrucarol, a trichothecene sesquiterpenoid obtained as a hydrolysis product of the naturally occurring verrucarin A. Our total synthesis began with the previously reported enantiomerically pure bicyclic alpha-methylated gamma-lactone, which was prepared from D-glucose. The key steps for the total synthesis were (1) aldol-like carbon-carbon bond formation applied to the starting lactone using a four-carbon aldehyde as an electrophile for introduction of the quaternary stereogenic carbon sharing the B and C-rings of the trichothecene skeleton, (2) Dieckmann cyclization of the derived epsilon-ester lactone for construction of the C-ring equivalent, (3) Barton's decarboxylative oxygenation for conversion of a carboxylic acid functionality in the Dieckmann cyclization product into a hydroxyl group, (4) skeletal enlargement strategy for the crucial trichothecene skeleton construction, and (5) the final stereoselective formation of the exo-epoxy ring at the methylene carbon in the bridge constituting the B and C-rings.
