Abstract
Allyl sulfones are an essential pharmacophore in many bioactive compounds. To combat their synthetic barrier, we report a practical, straightforward organophotocatalyzed methodology for accessing miscellaneously functionalized allyl sulfone derivatives using inexpensive and bench-stable sodium sulfinate salts under mild conditions. This photo-catalyzed radical sulfonylation provides access to a variety of allyl sulfones in good to excellent yields with high E : Z selectivity. A wide range of vinyl cyclopropanes, as well as aryl/hetero and alkyl sodium sulfinates, were tolerated and reliable in gram-scale synthesis. Later on, further functionalization of allyl sulfones was demonstrated. A plausible mechanism for radical sulfonylation is proposed from the control experiments.

Abstract
This review highlights the preparation of sodium sulfinates (RSO2Na) and their multifaceted synthetic applications. Substantial progress has been made over the last decade in the utilization of sodium sulfinates emerging as sulfonylating, sulfenylating or sulfinylating reagents, depending on reaction conditions. Sodium sulfinates act as versatile building blocks for preparing many valuable organosulfur compounds through S-S, N-S, and C-S bond-forming reactions. Remarkable advancement has been made in synthesizing thiosulfonates, sulfonamides, sulfides, and sulfones, including vinyl sulfones, allyl sulfones, and β-keto sulfones. The significant achievement of developing sulfonyl radical-triggered ring-closing sulfonylation and multicomponent reactions is also thoroughly discussed. Of note, the most promising site-selective C-H sulfonylation, photoredox catalytic transformations and electrochemical synthesis of sodium sulfinates are also demonstrated. Holistically, this review provides a unique and comprehensive overview of sodium sulfinates, which summarizes 355 core references up to March 2020. The chemistry of sodium sulfinate salts is divided into several sections based on the classes of sulfur-containing compounds with some critical mechanistic insights that are also disclosed.

Abstract
New C5 sulfone building blocks containing a masked polar end group have been devised for the efficient synthesis of carotenoids with polar termini. Chemoselectivity or the regiochemical issue of the highly functionalized units has been carefully addressed depending on the soft or hard nature of electrophiles. These building blocks have been successfully applied to the syntheses of crocetin derivatives, crocetin dial and the novel crocetin dinitrile.

Abstract
In this paper we describe an efficient six-step synthesis of crocetin-dimethylester that could be further reduced to a "four-step" synthesis through the use of in situ procedures. The simplicity of the whole process, the ready availability of starting materials, and the high overall yield render this strategy a very attractive synthesis of this very important compound, which is the key intermediate for the synthesis of several carotenoids and other polyene natural products.

Abstract
An efficient synthetic method for the protected p-hydroquinone compounds 4 containing the C5 trans allylic sulfone moiety has been developed by the direct Friedel-Crafts allylation of the protected dihydroquinone 2 with 4-chloro-2-methyl-1-phenylsulfonyl-2-butene (7a) or 4-hydroxy-2-methyl-1-phenylsulfonyl-2-butene (7b). Expeditious total syntheses of coenzyme Q-10 and vitamin K2(20) have been demonstrated from these valuable key compounds 4a and 4b.
