Abstract
A simple dihydroxy isoquinolinium molecule (3+ ) was prepared by a modification of a literature procedure. Interestingly, during optimisation of the synthesis a small amount of the natural product pseudopalmatine was isolated, and characterised for the first time by X-ray crystallography. Compound 3+ contains a catechol motif and positive charge on the same scaffold and was found to be a potent anion receptor, binding sulfate strongly in 8 : 2 d6 -acetone:D2 O and 7 : 3 d6 -acetone:D2 O (Ka >104 and 2,100 M-1 , respectively). Unsurprisingly, chloride binding was much weaker, even in the less polar solvent mixture 9 : 1 d6 -acetone:D2 O. The sulfate binding is remarkably strong for such a simple molecule, however anion binding studies were complicated by the tendency of the molecule to react with BPh4 - or BF4 - species during anion metathesis reactions. This gave two unusual zwitterions containing tetrahedral boronate centres, which were both characterised by X-ray crystallography.

Abstract
A series of mono- and dicationic 1,3,5-trisubstituted 2,4,6-triethylbenzenes containing pyridinium groups in combination with aminopyrimidine-/aminopyridine-based recognition units were synthesized and crystallographically studied. The combination of neutral and ionic building blocks represents a promising strategy for the development of effective and selective artificial receptors for anionic substrates. In the crystalline state, the investigated compounds show a tendency to bind the counterion PF6- in the cavity formed by the three functionalized side-arms. The intermolecular interactions with the PF6- ion comprise N-H∙∙∙F and C-H∙∙∙F bonds. Detailed analysis of various supramolecular motifs, including interactions with solvent molecules, provides deeper insights into the processes of molecular recognition. The information obtained is useful in the development of new receptor molecules for anions and in the selection of the most appropriate counterion.

Abstract
We report Pd-catalyzed cyclotrimerization of (+)-α-bromoenone, obtained from monoterpene β-pinene, into an enantiopure cyclotrimer. This C3 symmetric compound has three bicyclo[3.1.1]heptane rings fused to its central benzene with each ring carrying a carbonyl group. The cyclotrimer undergoes diastereoselective threefold alkynylation with the lithium salts of five terminal alkynes (41-63 %, de=4-83 %). The addition enabled a rapid synthesis of a small library of novel chiral cavitands that, in shape, resemble a tripod stand. These molecular tripods include a tris-bicycloannelated benzene head attached to three alkyne legs twisted in one direction to form a nonpolar cavity with polar groups as feet. Tripods with methylpyridinium and methylisoquinolinium legs, respectively, form inclusion complexes with anti-inflammatory and chiral drugs (R)/(S)-ibuprofen and (R)/(S)-naproxen. The mode of binding shows drug molecules docked in the cavity of the host through ion-ion, cation-π, and C-H-π contacts that, in addition of desolvation, give rise to complexes having millimolar to micromolar stability in water. Our findings open the door to creating a myriad of enantiopure tripods with tunable functions that, in the future, might give novel chemosensors, catalysts or sequestering agents.

Abstract
An imidazolium-based nonacationic cup (1·9X; X = PF6- or Cl-) was synthesized via step-by-step SN2 reactions without using any template. The water-soluble 1·9Cl- as a molecular container can encapsulate anionic nucleoside triphosphate and dinucleotide molecules (e.g., ATP and NADH) inside its cavity through hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions in aqueous solution.

Abstract
Hydroxypyridinium and hydroxyquinolinium compounds containing acidic O-H groups attached to a cationic aromatic scaffold were synthesized, i.e. N-methyl-3-hydroxypyridinium (1+) and N-methyl-8-hydroxyquinolinium (2+). These very simple compounds are capable of binding to chloride very strongly in CD3CN and with moderate strength in 9 : 1 CD3CN : D2O. Comparison with known association constants reveals that 1+ and 2+ bind chloride in CD3CN or CD3CN : D2O with comparable affinities to receptors containing significantly more hydrogen bond donors and/or higher positive charges. Crystal structures of both compounds with coordinating anions were obtained, and feature short O-Hanion hydrogen bonds. A receptor containing two hydroxyquinolinium groups was also prepared. While the low solubility of this compound caused difficulties, we were able to demonstrate chloride binding in a competitive 1 : 1 CD3CN : CD3OD solvent mixture. Addition of sulfate to this compound results in the formation of a crystallographically-characterised solid state anion coordination polymer.

Abstract
Imidazolium based receptors selectively recognize anions, and have received more and more attention. In 2006 and 2010, we reviewed the mechanism and progress of imidazolium salt recognition of anions, respectively. In the past ten years, new developments have emerged in this area, including some new imidazolium motifs and the identification of a wider variety of biological anions. In this review, we discuss the progress of imidazolium receptors for the recognition of anions in the period of 2010-2019 and highlight the trends in this area. We first classify receptors based on motifs, including some newly emerging receptors, as well as new advances in existing receptor types at this stage. Then we discuss separately according to the types of anions, including ATP, GTP, DNA and RNA.

Abstract
Despite their ready availability, O-H groups have received relatively little attention as anion recognition motifs. Here, we report two simple hydroxy-containing anion receptors that are prepared in two facile steps followed by anion exchange, without the need for chromatographic purification at any stage. These receptors contain a pyridinium bis(amide) motif as well as hydroxyphenyl groups, and bind mono- and divalent anions in 9:1 CD3 CN:D2 O, showing a selectivity preference for sulfate. Notably, a "model" receptor that does not contain hydroxy groups shows only very weak sulfate binding in this competitive solvent mixture. In the solid state, X-ray crystallographic studies show that the receptors tend to form extended assemblies with anions; however, 1 H and DOSY NMR studies as well as molecular dynamics simulations show that only 1:1 complexes are present in solution. Molecular dynamics simulations suggest that one of the receptors suffers from competing intramolecular hydrogen bonding, while another binds partially-hydrated anions, with the receptor's O-H groups forming hydrogen bonds to water molecules within the anion's coordination sphere.

Abstract
This review highlights the most significant examples of an emerging field in the design of highly selective anion receptors. To date, there has been remarkable progress in the binding and sensing of anions. This has been driven in part by the discovery of ways to construct effective anion binding receptors using the dominant N-H functional groups and neutral and cationic C-H hydrogen bond donors, as well as underexplored strong directional noncovalent interactions such as halogen-bonding and anion-π interactions. In this review, we will describe a new and promising strategy for constructing anion binding receptors with distinct advantages arising from their elaborate design, incorporating multiple binding sites able to interact cooperatively with anions through these different kinds of noncovalent interactions. Comparisons with control species or solely hydrogen-bonding analogues reveal unique characteristics in terms of strength, selectivity, and interaction geometry, representing important advances in the rising field of supramolecular chemistry.

Abstract
The imidazolium derivatives due to their positive charge possess one of the most polarized and positively charged proton at C2-H to form strong ionic hydrogen bond (also termed as double ionic hydrogen bond) with anions and also provide opportunities for anion - π interactions with electron-deficient imidazolium ring. In the present review article, imidazolium based molecular probes for their ability to recognize inorganic anions like halides, cyanide, perchlorate, carboxylic acids, phosphate, sulfate etc. and their derived molecules viz. nucleotides, DNA, RNA, surfactants, proteins, etc have been discussed. The review covers the literature published after year 2009 and has > 130 references. The previous literature has already been discussed by Yoon et al. in two review articles published in Chem. Soc. Rev. 2006 and 2010.
