Abstract
The prevalent π-π interactions in 2D covalent organic frameworks (COFs) impart a certain flexibility to the structures, making the stacking of COF layers susceptible to external stimuli and introducing some structural disorder. Recent research indicates that the flexibility between COF layers and the associated disorder significantly influence their selective adsorption performance toward gas molecules. However, the adsorption process in a solution environment is more complex compared to gas-phase adsorption, involving interactions between adsorbents and adsorbates, as well as the solvation effects of flexible 2D COFs. Therefore, the inherent flexibility and disorder in 2D COFs under solution conditions and their impact on the adsorption performance of metal ions have not been observed yet. Herein, the synthesis of a novel carboxyl-functionalized COF featuring stable β-ketoenamine and benzimidazole linkages, named DMTP-COOH, is presented. DMTP-COOH exhibits excellent selective adsorption capability for uranium, with significantly different adsorption capacities observed after treatment with different solvents. This notable difference in adsorption capacity is observed under varying pH, concentration, time, and even in the presence of multiple competing ions. This work represents the first observation of the significant impact of solvent soaking treatment on the selective adsorption performance of COFs for uranium under liquid conditions.

Abstract
The compatibility of crystallinity, stability, and functionality in covalent organic frameworks (COFs) is challenging but significant in reticular chemistry and materials science. Herein, it is presented for the first time a strategy to synthesize directly amino-functionalized COF with stable benzodiimidazole linkage by regioselective one-step cyclization and aromatization. Bandrowski's base with two types of amino groups is used as a unique monomer, providing not only construction sites for the material framework through specific region-selective reaction, but also amino active sites for functionality, which is usually difficult to achieve directly in COF synthesis because amino groups are the participants in COF bonding. In addition, the aromatic benzodiimidazole rings and the large conjugated system of the product effectively improve the crystallinity and stability, so that the as-prepared BBCOF remains unchanged in both acid and base solutions, which is obviously better than the conventional imine-linked COF. Impressively, the significantly enhanced conjugation degree by the benzodiimidazole structure also endows BBCOF with an efficient photocatalytic reduction of uranyl ion, with removal rate as high as 96.6% in single-ion system and 95% in multi-ion system. This study is of great importance to the design and synthesis of functional COFs with a commendable trade-off among crystallinity, stability, and functionality.

Abstract
p-Phenylenediamine (PPD) has been classified as a strong skin allergen, but when it comes to toxicological concerns, benzoquinone diamine (BQDI), the primary oxidation derivative of PPD, is frequently considered and was shown to covalently bind nucleophilic residues on model peptides. However, tests in solution are far from providing a reliable model, as the cutaneous metabolism of PPD is not covered. We now report the synthesis of two 13C substituted isotopomers of PPD, 1,4-(13C)p-phenylenediamine 1 and 2,5-(13C)p-phenylenediamine 2, and the investigation of their reactivity in reconstructed human epidermis (RHE) using the high resolution magic angle spinning (HRMAS) NMR technique. RHE samples were first treated with 1 or 2 and incubated for 1 to 48 h. Compared to the control, spectra clearly showed only the signals of 1 or 2 gradually decreasing with time to disappear after 48 h of incubation. However, the culture media of RHE incubated with 1 for 1 and 24 h, respectively, showed the presence of both monoacetylated- and diacetylated-PPD as major products. Therefore, the acetylation reaction catalyzed by N-acetyltransferase (NAT) enzymes appeared to be the main process taking place in RHE. With the aim of increasing the reactivity by oxidation, 1 and 2 were treated with 0.5 equiv of H2O2 prior to their application to RHE and incubated for different times. Under these conditions, new peaks having close chemical shifts to those of PPD-cysteine adducts previously observed in solution were detected. Under such oxidative conditions, we were thus able to detect and quantify cysteine adducts in RHE (maximum of 0.2 nmol/mg of RHE at 8 h of incubation) while no reaction with other nucleophilic amino acid residues could be observed.

Abstract
We previously reported that P-retigabine (P-RTG), a retigabine (RTG) analogue bearing a propargyl group at the nitrogen atom in the linker of RTG, displayed moderate anticonvulsant efficacy. Recently, our further efforts led to the discovery of HN37 (pynegabine), which demonstrated satisfactory chemical stability upon deleting the ortho liable -NH2 group and installing two adjacent methyl groups to the carbamate motif. HN37 exhibited enhanced activation potency toward neuronal Kv7 channels and high in vivo efficacy in a range of pre-clinical seizure models, including the maximal electroshock test and a 6 Hz model of pharmacoresistant limbic seizures. With its improved chemical stability, strong efficacy, and better safety margin, HN37 has progressed to clinical trial in China for epilepsy treatment.

Abstract
We demonstrate that the conductance switching of benzo-bis(imidazole) molecules upon protonation depends on the lateral functional groups. The protonated H-substituted molecule shows a higher conductance than the neutral one (Gpro > Gneu), while the opposite (Gneu > Gpro) is observed for a molecule laterally functionalized by amino-phenyl groups. These results are demonstrated at various scale lengths: self-assembled monolayers, tiny nanodot-molecule junctions and single molecules. From ab initio theoretical calculations, we conclude that for the H-substituted molecule, the result Gpro > Gneu is correctly explained by a reduction of the LUMO-HOMO gap, while for the amino-phenyl functionnalized molecule, the result Gneu > Gpro is consistent with a shift of the HOMO, which reduces the density of states at the Fermi energy.

Abstract
A novel photochromic diarylethene was synthesized successfully containing a phthalazine unit. Its multistate fluorescence switching properties were investigated by stimulating with UV/vis lights and Al3+/EDTA. The synthesized diarylethene displayed excellent selectivity to Al3+ with a distinct fluorescence change, revealing that it could be used as a sensor for fluorescence identification of Al3+, and a logic circuit was constructed by utilizing this diarylethene molecular platform. Moreover, it also exhibited a high accuracy for the determination of Al3+ in practical water samples.

Abstract
A new sensitive sensor for Zn2+ based on diarylethene with an imidazole unit has been synthesized. Its photochromic and fluorescent behaviors have been systematically investigated by the stimulation of UV/vis lights and Zn2+ ion in THF solution. It displayed a dual-mode with a "turn on" fluorescence and color response to Zn2+. With the addition of Zn2+, the emission intensity enhanced 26-fold, accompanied by the fluorescent color changed from dark red to bright yellow. The 1:1 stoichiometry between the sensor and Zn2+ was verified by Job's plot and MS. The LOD for Zn2+ was determined to be 6.12 × 10-9 mol L-1. Furthermore, a logic circuit was designed by using the fluorescence at 578 nm as output and the combinational stimuli of UV/vis and Zn2+/EDTA as inputs.

Abstract
Dithienylethenes (DTEs) can be assembled to form supramolecular multiphotochromic systems that are highly functional molecular architectures of potential interest for building complex optoelectronic devices. Yet even simple DTE dimers relying on an organic linker may suffer from a partial photoactivity, i.e., only one of the two switches does isomerise. Experimentally, this limited photochromism has been attributed to an excited state energy transfer (EET) between the two DTEs of the multimer; this EET taking place instead of the desired photoinduced cyclisation of the DTE. However, no clear evidences of this phenomenon have been provided so far. In this work we propose the first rationalisation of this potential parasite photoinduced event using a computational approach based on Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) for the calculation of the electronic coupling in DTE dimers. Besides quantifying EET in several systems, we dissect the role of through-bond and through-space mechanisms on this process and clarify their dependence on both the nature and length of the bridge separating the two photochromes. The theoretical data obtained in this framework are in full agreement with the experimental outcomes and pave the way toward a molecular design of coupled, yet fully functionals, DTE-based multiswitches.

Abstract
Aiming at designing more efficient multiphotochromes, we investigate with the help of ab initio tools the impact of the substitution on a series of dimers constituted of two dithienylethene (DTE) moieties, strongly coupled to each other through an ethynyl linker. The electronic structure and the optical properties of a large panel of compounds, substituted on different positions by various types of electroactive groups, have been compared with the aim of designing a dyad in which the three possible isomers (open-open, closed-open, closed-closed) can be reached. We show that appending the reactive carbons atoms of the DTE core with electroactive groups on one of the two photochromes allows cyclisation to be induced on a specific moiety, which leads to the formation of the desired closed-open isomer. Substituting the lateral positions of the thiophene rings provides further control of the topology of the frontier molecular orbitals, so that the electronic transition inducing the second ring closure stands out in the spectrum of the intermediate isomer.

Abstract
A novel diarylethene with a 6-aryl[1,2-c]quinazoline unit has been synthesized via a nucleophilic reaction. Its photochromism and fluorescence exhibited multi-addressable behaviors by the stimulation of both light irradiation and acid/base. Addition of trifluoroacetic acid to the solution of the diarylethene resulted in notable absorption spectral change, and the protonated form also possessed excellent photochromic properties. Meanwhile, its emission intensity was enhanced remarkably and the emission peak redshifted with a notable color change from dark blue to bright green. The changes could be recovered to the initial state by neutralizing with triethylamine. Consequently, a logic circuit was constructed with the diarylethene by using the fluorescence intensity at 482nm as output and acid/base as inputs.

Abstract
Two new impurities were described and determined using gradient HPLC method with UV detection in retigabine (RET). Using LC-HRMS, NMR and IR analysis the impurities were identified as RET-dimer I: diethyl {4,4'-diamino-6,6'-bis[(4-fluorobenzyl)amino]biphenyl-3,3'-diyl}biscarbamate and RET-dimer II: ethyl {2-amino-5-[{2-amino-4-[(4-fluorobenzyl) amino] phenyl} (ethoxycarbonyl) amino]-4-[(4-fluorobenzyl)amino] phenyl}carbamate. Reference standards of these impurities were synthesized followed by semipreparative HPLC purification. The mechanism of the formation of these impurities is also discussed. An HPLC method was optimized in order to separate, selectively detect and quantify all process-related impurities and degradation products of RET. The presented method, which was validated in terms of linearity, limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantification (LOQ) and selectivity is very quick (less than 11min including re-equilibration time) and therefore highly suitable for routine analysis of RET related substances as well as stability studies.

Abstract
In single photochromes, the two isomers that are interconverted in photoinduced reactions can serve as on and off states in a molecular switching device. The addition of several photochromic moieties onto a single molecule can allow the processing of more complex logical patterns. For example, an asymmetric triad could, in principle, store a byte, rather than a bit, of data. Because of the potential impact of multiphotochromic molecules in many research areas, over the past decade several groups have synthesized these coupled structures. The targets are easily addressable molecules that display increased contrast between the on and off states and in which all isomers have significantly distinguishable optical signatures. In this Account, we provide an overview of the multiswitchable molecular systems that incorporate at least one diarylethene group, which is the most successful thermally stable (P-type) organic photochrome. Up to this point, most systems have presented significant limitations. First of all, the reversibility of the processes is hindered by several side reactions more frequently than for single photochromes. Second, switching one part of the compound impedes the photoreactivity of other fragments in approximately 50% of the cases, and maximizing the electronic communication increases the probability of partial activity. In addition, most of the few synthesized operative systems only demonstrate cumulative absorption spectra rather than new features. Finally, it is impossible to selectively induce a chosen conversion because one wavelength might trigger several processes. We also emphasize the promising successes of asymmetric diarylethene dimers and trimers and molecules that combine two families of photochromes, such as diarylethene added to fulgimide or phenoxy-naphthacenequinone. In that framework, theoretical simulations offer complementary tools to investigate these structures, both to obtain structure/property relationships and to propose paths for the design of more efficient molecules. However, due to the size of the systems, researchers can only apply semiquantitative models. The investigation of the absorption spectra of the photochromes with time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT), the analysis of the topology of the LUMO + n (typically n = 1) of the closed-open hybrid, and an estimate of the steric stress in the hypothetical (ground-state) closed-closed structure serve as a useful combination of parameters to obtain initial insights regarding the photocyclization of the different open diarylethene groups. Nevertheless, because a first-order qualitative approach does not explore the potential energy surface of the photoexcited states, it remains inadequate for the investigation of some molecules.
