Abstract
Aziridinemethanol sulfonate esters react with tetrathiomolybdate 1 to give thiirane derivatives as the major product and cyclic disulfides as minor product under mild reaction conditions via an unprecedented thia-aza-Payne-type rearrangement. Interestingly, when the reaction of 1 was carried out with 2-aziridino-cyclohexanol derivatives it resulted in the formation of thia-bicyclo[3.1.1]heptane or dithia-bicyclo[3.2.1]octane derivatives.

Abstract
An enantioselective approach to 2'-deoxy-4'-thia spirocyclic nucleosides featuring an alpha- or beta-hydroxyl substituent at C-5' of the carbocyclic ring is detailed. The starting point is the mandelate acetal 8. The overall strategy involves the stereocontrolled dihydroxylation of this dihydrothiophene, subsequent generation of the keto acetonide 12 followed by its Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley reduction and beta-elimination, protection of the resulting dihydroxy thiaglycal, electrophilic glycosidation according to the Haraguchi protocol, reductive removal of the phenylseleno group, and end-game global deprotection. Acquisition of the alpha- and beta-5'-isomers is equally facile. Various 1D and 2D NMR techniques are used for assigning configuration.

Abstract
The unprotected methyl L-arabinofuranosides, D-ribofuranosides and D-xylofuranosides are transformed into the corresponding S-acetyl-5-thio derivatives by the thio-Mitsunobu reaction. Mesylation and subsequent reaction with sodium hydrogen carbonate led, depending on the configuration of the intermediate, to 2,5-anhydro-2-thio- or 3,5-anhydro-3-thiopentofuranosides. Due to inversion at C-3 or C-2 during the intramolecular nucleophilic displacement the products exhibit L-lyxo-, D-arabino- or D-lyxo-configuration. Analogously, the methyl 2,3-anhydro-D-ribofuranosides yielded 5-thio-S-acetates with intact 2,3-oxirane groups, which were cyclised with sodium hydrogen carbonate by epoxide ring opening and concomitant ring closure to form exclusively 3,5-anhydro-3-thio-D-xylofuranosides. A related 3,5-anhydro-3-seleno-D-lyxofuranoside was obtained by reaction of a 3,5-di-O-mesyl-D-arabinofuranoside with sodium hydrogen selenide. Several X-ray diffraction analyses proved the structures of the products.

Abstract
Methodology based on the concept of thionium ion-initiated pinacolic ring expansion has been developed for accessing C4'-spirocyclic thionucleosides. The readily available racemic ketones 6 and 37 are conveniently resolved via their acetals with (R)-mandelic acid. Subsequent reactions beginning with utilization of the Pummerer rearrangement lend themselves to functionalization of the spirocyclic core and ultimately incorporation of the nucleosidic bases. Limitations to this strategy are pointed out. Acquisition of the alpha- and beta-isomers at C4' is equally facile. Absolute configurational assignments have been made possible by X-ray crystallography.

Abstract
The trifluoromethylation of (Z)/(E)-tert-butyl (4S)-4-(2'-ethoxycarbonyl-2'-bromoprop-1'-enyl)-2,2-dimethyloxazolidine-3-carboxylate (4), which is derived from chiral serine aldehyde, yields α-trifluoromethyl-α,β-unsaturated ester 1. Compound 1 is used as a key intermediate for the synthesis of a number of 2',3'-dideoxy-2'-trifluoromethyl-N-azanucleosides.

Abstract
7-Deoxy-1,2:3,4-di-O-isopropylidene-alpha-D-galacto-heptopyranos-6-ulose (1) reacted with carbon disulphide and methyl iodide in the presence of a base to furnish 7,8-dideoxy-1,2:3,4-di-O-isopropylidene-8,8-[bis(methylthio)]-alpha-D-galacto-oct-7-enopyranos-6-ulose (2). This 'push-pull' activated unsaturated monosaccharide underwent a ring closure reaction with hydrazine hydrate to give the 'inversed' C-nucleoside analogue 3. Compound 1 and malononitrile yielded the 7-cyano-6,7-dideoxy-1,2:3,4-di-O-isopropylidene-6-methyl-alpha-D-galacto-oct-6-enopyranurononitrile (4). Treatment of 4 with carbon disulphide and methyl iodide in the presence of a base afforded the sugar 'push-pull' butadiene 5 which was transformed into the pyridine nucleoside analogue 6.

Abstract
Unprotected D-glucitol is transformed into 5-O-acetyl-1,4-anhydro-6-thio-D-glucitol (3) in one step by use of the thio-Mitsunobu reaction. Rearrangement (acetyl group migration) to form 3-O-acetyl-1,4-anhydro-6-thio-D-glucitol occurs during column chromatography of 3 on silica gel. 2,5-Di-O-acetyl-1,6-dithio-D-mannitol and 1,6-di-S-acetyl-2,5-anhydro-1,6-dithio-D-glucitol (characterized as the corresponding p-nitrobenzoates) are formed from D-mannitol, whereas galactitol yields a mass of unidentified products. 1-Seleno-D-xylitol, produced by reduction of D-xylose with hydrogen selenide, does not undergo a Mitsunobu reaction.

Abstract
Two 2-oxa-7-thiabicyclo[4.2.0]octane derivatives, 4 and 10, with the D-galacto and D-gulo configuration, respectively, were obtained from methyl alpha-D-glucopyranoside. The thietane cyclization involved a thio-Mitsunobu reaction resulting in a 6-thioacetate, which underwent selective base-catalyzed intramolecular nucleophilic substitution at a C-4 mesylate. The structures of 4 and 10 were elucidated by X-ray diffraction analysis.

Abstract
Novel apio dideoxynucleosides with azido or amino or amino substituent were synthesized starting from 1,3-dihydroxyacetone utilizing an acid-catalyzed 1,4-conjugated addition as a key step and evaluated for antiviral activity. Unfortunately, they were found to be neither active against HIV-1, HSV-1,2 and poliovirus nor toxic.
