Abstract
The first nonracemic synthesis of (+)-geranyllinaloisocyanide, starting with (-)-lactic acid methyl ester, has been accomplished by exploiting a [3.3] sigmatropic rearrangement of allyl cyanate. The synthesis enables assignment of the S configuration of the C(3) isocyano substituted, quaternary stereogenic center in natural geranyllinaloisocyanide.

Abstract
The use of a chiral serine equivalent as an excellent chiral building block has been demonstrated in the synthesis of alpha-benzylserine through a diastereoselective lithium enolate alkylation reaction and subsequent acid hydrolysis. The role of a coordinating countercation (lithium) in the alkylation reaction has been investigated. Theoretical studies have been performed in order to elucidate the stereochemical outcome of the alkylation process, which occurs with total retention of configuration.

Abstract
A new chiral serine equivalent and its enantiomer have been synthesized from (S)- and (R)-N-Boc-serine methyl esters (Boc: tert-butyloxycarbonyl). The use of these compounds as chiral building blocks has been demonstrated in the synthesis of alpha-alkyl alpha-amino acids by diastereoselective potassium enolate alkylation reactions and subsequent acid hydrolyses. Theoretical studies were performed to elucidate the stereochemical outcome of both the formation of five-membered cyclic N,O-acetals and the subsequent alkylation process, which occurs with total retention of configuration. This feature could be explained in terms of the high degree of pyramidalization of enolate intermediates.

Abstract
Dirhodium(II)-catalyzed C-H amination reaction of (S)-3-(tert-butyldimethylsilyloxy)-2-methylpropyl carbamate, which was easily prepared from methyl (S)-2-methyl-3-hydroxypropanoate, proceeded more smoothly than those of their 2-(methoxycarbonyl)propyl derivative to give the corresponding oxazolidinone in excellent yield. The resulting oxazolidinone was converted efficiently into both (R)-monoprotected and (S)-monoprotected 2-amino-2-methyl-1,3-propanediols.

Abstract
Protected alpha-formyl amino acids, themselves available from the corresponding alpha-vinyl amino acids, are stereoselectively transformed into the (Z)-configured alpha-(2'-fluoro)vinyl amino acids via a three-step sequence. The route employs McCarthy's reagent, diethyl alpha-fluoro-alpha-(phenylsulfonyl)methyl phosphonate, and proceeds via the intermediate (E)-alpha-fluorovinyl sulfones and (E)-alpha-fluorovinylstannanes. The latter may either be exploited as novel cross-coupling partners for fluorovinyl branch extension or be globally deprotected, to provide the title compounds. [structure: see text]

Abstract
An ISES (in situ enzymatic screening) lead pointed to conditions (PMP N-protecting group, Ni(cod)(2) catalyst precursor) under which chiral, bidentate phosphines could promote Ni(0)-mediated allylic amination. Therefore, bidentate phosphines bearing central, axial, and planar chirality were examined with two model substrates of interest for PLP-enzyme inhibitor synthesis. In the best case, with (R)-MeO-BIPHEP, vinylglycinol derivative 2 was obtained in 75% ee (97% ee, one recrystallization) from 1. Further manipulation provided a Ni(0)-mediated entry into l-vinylglycine. [reaction: see text]

Abstract
A pair of diastereomeric (4S,5S)- and (4S,5R)-4-methoxycarbonyl-5-phenylselenomethyl-2-phenyl oxazolines, derived from L-vinylglycine, serve as precursors to protected, quaternary, L- and D-α-(2-tributylstannyl)vinyl amino acids, respectively, in three steps {(i) alkylative side chain installation, (ii) eliminative ring-opening and (iii) vinyl selenide to vinyl stannane interconversion}. The title compounds may be protodestannylated to the corresponding free, quaternary L- and D-vinyl amino acids. Alternatively, the 2-stannylvinyl α-branch (or the derivative 2-iodovinyl branch) may be exploited to access novel quaternary, L- and D-β,γ-unsaturated amino acids via a range of transition metal-mediated cross coupling reactions.

Abstract
Addition of Et(2)AlCN and i-PrOH to ketosulfinimines (N-sulfinyl imines) affords corresponding alpha-alkyl alpha-amino nitriles in moderate to good yields. The diastereoselectivity is largely dependent on the E/Z isomer ratio of the ketosulfinimine. Hydrolysis of the diastereomerically pure amino nitriles affords enantiopure alpha-alkyl alpha-amino acids in moderate to good yields.
