Abstract
Bandshape analysis of charge-transfer optical bands in room-temperature ionic liquids (ILs) was performed to extract the reorganization energy of electron transfer. Remarkably, the reorganization energies in ILs are close to those in cyclohexane. This result runs against common wisdom in the field since conducting ILs, which are characterized by an infinite static dielectric constant, and nonpolar cyclohexane fall to the opposite ends of the polarity scale based on their dielectric constants. Theoretical calculations employing structure factors of ILs from molecular dynamics simulations support the low values of the reorganization energy. Standard dielectric arguments do not apply to solvation in ILs, and nonergodic reorganization energies are required for a quantitative analysis.

Abstract
Steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence were used to investigate the solvation of coumarin 153 (C153) and coumarin 343 (C343) in methanol + ethaline binary solutions, a deep eutectic solvent composed of a 1:2 molar ratio choline chloride + ethylene glycol. In addition, time-resolved anisotropy decays were used to determine the solute's rotational reorientation time as a function of viscosity. Measurements were made in solutions covering the entire range of mole fraction. Viscosity measurements were used to characterize the bulk solvent properties, and as expected, addition of methanol resulted in an decreased viscosity, showing an exponential decrease with mole fraction, up to ∼50-fold at xMeOH = 1.0. Probe rotational reorientation times were found to be biexponential at xMeOH < 0.3 for C153 and xMeOH < 0.5 for C343 and monoexponential at richer methanol content. In proportion to viscosity, C153 and C343 average rotation times decreased ∼30-fold from xMeOH = 0 to 0.9 and showed a power law dependence of ∼η0.85. Rotation times approached the stick boundary limit on dilution with methanol. Time-resolved Stokes shifts quantified the solvation dynamics and were nearly single exponential for C153 but were clearly biexponential for C343. Solvation times also tracked with viscosity according to a power law dependence, with exponents of 0.3 and 0.4 for C153 and C343, respectively. The dilution effect of methanol was not linear in proportion to the viscosity change and alone cannot account for the change in solvation. Dilution also showed a different correlation to solvation than did temperature variations to govern the viscosity change.

Abstract
(1)H nuclear magnetic resonance relaxometry is applied to reveal information on the translational and rotational dynamics of the ionic liquid: 1-butyl-3-methyl imidazoliumoctyl sulfate (BMIM-OcSO4) in bulk and in a confinement formed by a nanoporous SiO2 matrix. The experimental studies were performed in a very broad frequency range, from 8 kHz to 40 MHz (referring to the (1)H resonance frequency), in order to probe motional processes at very different time scales using a single experiment, and in the temperature range of 243-303 K. The relaxation results for BMIM-OcSO4 in bulk are interpreted in terms of three relaxation contributions: a term associated with the translational dynamics of the ions (it has been assumed that the translational dynamics of cations and anions can be described by one diffusion coefficient) and two terms associated with the rotational motion of the anion and the cation, respectively. The relationships between the obtained dynamic parameters (rotational correlation times and translational diffusion coefficients) are thoroughly discussed and used as a "reference" for the dynamics of BMIM-OcSO4 confined in an SiO2 matrix. Analysis of the corresponding relaxation data for the confined liquid shows that the confinement does not significantly affect the rotational dynamics, but it has a considerable impact on the translational motion. It is demonstrated that the relaxation term associated with the translational dynamics stems from two contributions: a contribution from a core (bulk-like) fraction of the liquid and from a fraction moving near the pore surface and therefore being for some time adsorbed on the pore walls. The translational diffusion coefficient for the last fraction is determined and several conclusions regarding the residence lifetime of the ions on the surface are drawn. Moreover, an additional motional process on the timescale of ns or shorter is revealed in the confinement.

Abstract
Steady-state absorption and fluorescence as well as time-resolved fluorescence of coumarin 151 (C151) and coumarin 153 (C153) were measured in hydroxyl-functionalized ionic liquids ([HOEmim][BF4] and [HOEmim][N(CN)2]) and in nonhydroxyl-functionalized ionic liquids ([Emim][BF4] and [Emim][N(CN)2]). Both the steady-state fluorescence and time-resolved fluorescence observations reveal that hydroxyl-functionalized ionic liquid quenches the fluorescence of C153 while the nonhydroxyl-functionalized ionic liquid does not. We also measured the time-resolved fluorescence anisotropy of C151 and C153 in both [HOEmim][BF4] and [Emim][BF4]. It is found that the ratio of the rotational relaxation lifetime of C153 in [HOEmim][BF4] with respect to that in [Emim][BF4] is about 15% larger than that of C151 in [HOEmim][BF4] with respect to that in [Emim][BF4], indicating extra interaction between C153 and [HOEmim][BF4] exists except the effect of the viscosity of ionic liquid.

Abstract
In this manuscript, we have characterized two different micellar aggregates containing all nonvolatile components. We have shown (i) the effect of ethylammonium nitrate (EAN) addition on the properties of micellar solution of Triton X-100 in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (bmimPF(6)) and (ii) the effect of bmimPF(6) addition on the properties of micellar solution of Triton X-100 in EAN. To investigate the effect, we have used (1)H NMR, pulsed-field gradient spin-echo NMR (PFGSE NMR), and methyl orange (MO) and coumarin 153 (C-153) as absorption and emission probes, respectively. The penetration of added EAN inside the Triton X-100/bmimPF(6) micellar aggregates is indicated by (i) red shift in both the absorption spectra of MO and emission spectra of C-153 and (ii) downfield shift of proton signals of ethylene oxide units in Triton X-100. On the other hand, (1)H NMR and PFGSE NMR indicates the penetration of added bmimPF(6) inside the Triton X-100/EAN micellar aggregates. However, the constancy of both the absorption spectra of MO and emission spectra of C-153 indicates that the microenvironment around the probe molecules remains unaffected. We have also investigated the effect of micelle formation and the effect of penetration of ionic liquids (ILs) in micellar aggregates, on the solvation dynamics of C-153. The solvent relaxation around C-153 gets retarded on going from neat ILs to the micellar solution of Triton X-100 in ILs. In addition to this, we have also observed that with the addition of EAN in Triton X-100/bmimPF(6) micellar aggregates the solvation dynamics becomes faster, whereas with the addition of bmimPF(6) in Triton X-100/EAN micellar aggregates we did not observe any notable change in solvation dynamics. This observation further supports the conclusions drawn from UV-visible and NMR studies.

Abstract
Recent advances in ultrafast laser technology have spurred investigations of microheterogeneous solutions. In particular, researchers have explored details of reverse micelles (RMs), which present isolated droplets of polar solvent sequestered from a continuous nonpolar phase by a surfactant layer. This review explores recent studies utilizing a variety of ultrafast laser techniques to uncover details about structure and dynamics in various RMs. Using ultrafast vibrational spectroscopy, researchers have probed hydrogen-bond dynamics and vibrational energy relaxation in RMs. These studies have developed our understanding of reverse micellar structure, identifying varying water environments in the RMs. In a plethora of experiments employing probe molecules, researchers have explored the confined environment presented by RMs and their impact on a range of chemical reactions. These studies have shown that confinement, rather than the specific interactions with surfactants, is an important factor determining the impact of the reverse micellar environment on the chemistry.

Abstract
Coumarins, as a family of molecules, exhibit a wide range of fluorescence emission properties. In many cases, this fluorescence is extremely sensitive to the local environment of the molecule, especially the local polarity and microviscosity. In addition, coumarins show a wide range of size, shape, and hydrophobicity. These properties make them especially useful as fluorescent probes of heterogeneous environments, such as supramolecular host cavities, micelles, polymers and solids. This article will review the use of coumarins to probe such heterogeneous systems using fluorescence spectroscopy.

Abstract
Modifying properties of aqueous surfactant solutions by addition of external additives is an important area of research. Unusual properties of ionic liquids (ILs) make them ideal candidates for this purpose. Changes in important physicochemical properties of aqueous zwitterionic N-dodecyl- N, N-dimethyl-3-ammonio-1-propanesulfonate (SB-12) surfactant solution upon addition of hydrophilic IL 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, [bmim][BF 4], are reported. Dynamic light scattering results indicate a dramatic reduction in the average micellar size in the presence of [bmim][BF 4]; micellar (or micelle-like) aggregation in the presence of as high as 30 wt % [bmim][BF 4] is confirmed. Responses from fluorescence probes are used to obtain critical micelle concentration (cmc), aggregation number ( N agg), and dipolarity and microfluidity of the micellar pseudophase of aqueous SB-12 in the presence of [bmim][BF 4]. In general, increasing the amount of [bmim][BF 4] to 30 wt % results in decrease in N agg and increase in cmc. Increase in the dipolarity and the microfluidity of the probe cybotactic region within the micellar pseudophase is observed on increasing [bmim][BF 4] concentration in the solution. It is attributed to increased water penetration into the micellar pseudophase as [bmim][BF 4] is added to aqueous SB-12. It is proposed that IL [bmim][BF 4] behaves similar to an electrolyte and/or a cosurfactant when present at low concentrations and as a polar cosolvent when present at high concentrations. Electrostatic attraction between cation of IL and anion of zwitterion, and anion of IL and cation of zwitterion at low concentrations of [bmim][BF 4] is evoked to explain the observed changes. Presence of IL as cosolvent appears to reduce the efficiency of micellization process by reducing the hydrophobic effect.

Abstract
Dynamic solvation of the dye coumarin 153 is studied in a phosphonium ionic liquid: hexadecyltributylphosphonium bromide, [(C4)3C16P+][Br-]. It forms micelles in water, and the bulk also exists as a liquid under our experimental conditions. This system permits a comparison with an imidazolium ionic liquid studied earlier, which also formed micelles in water (J. Phys. Chem. A 2006, 110, 10725-10730). We conclude that our analysis of the comparable situation in a phosphonium liquid is not as definitive as we had proposed earlier, i.e., that the majority of the early-time solvation arises from the organic cation. Part of the difficulty in performing this analysis is most likely due to the amount of water that is associated with the micelle. In the course of this work, we have focused on the calculation of the solvation correlation function, C(t), and investigated how it depends upon the methods with which the "zero-time" spectrum is constructed.

Abstract
Altering and modifying important physicochemical properties of aqueous surfactant solutions is highly desirable as far as potential applications of such systems are concerned. Changes in the properties of aqueous solutions of a common anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) are assessed in the presence of a common and popular 'hydrophobic' ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (bmimPF(6)). Upon addition of up to approximately 0.10 wt% bmimPF(6), a dramatic decrease in critical micelle concentration (cmc) is accompanied by an increase in the degree of counterion dissociation (alpha) and micellar aggregation number (N(agg)) indicating micellar growth. However, in the range 0.10 wt% < or = bmimPF(6) 2.00 wt%, relatively gradual decrease in alpha and N(agg) is observed along with no change in cmc. Significantly decreased microfluidity of the aqueous SDS solutions on addition of bmimPF(6) is indicated by a fluorescence microviscosity probe 1,3-bis-(1-pyrenyl)propane which suggests partitioning of bmimPF(6) into the SDS micellar phase. Behavior of solvatochromic fluorescence probes, pyrene, pyrene-1-carboxaldehyde, and 2-(p-toluidino)naphthalene-6-sulfonate, confirms interaction, and possible complexation, between IL bmimPF(6) and anionic micellar surface. Increased solubility of bmimPF(6) with increasing SDS concentration further confirms SDS-bmimPF(6) interactions. Presence of strong electrostatic attraction between bmim(+) and anionic micellar surface is proposed to be the most dominant reason for these observations. All-in-all, unique role of a hydrophobic ionic liquid bmimPF(6) in modifying the properties of aqueous anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate is demonstrated.

Abstract
The interaction of water with room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) [bmim][PF6] has been studied in [bmim][PF6]/TX-100/water ternary microemulsions by solvent and rotational relaxation of coumarin 153 (C-153) and coumarin 490 (C-490). The rotational relaxation and average solvation time of C-153 and C-490 gradually decrease with increase in water content of the microemulsions. The gradual increase in the size of the microemulsion with increase in w0 (w0=[water]/[surfactant]) is evident from dynamic light scattering measurements. Consequently the mobility of the water molecules also increases. In comparison to pure water the retardation of solvation time in the RTIL containing ternary microemulsions is very less. The authors have also reported the solvation time of C-490 in neat [bmim][PF6]. The solvation time of C-490 in neat [bmim][PF6] is bimodal with time constants of 400 ps and 1.10 ns.

Abstract
Steady-state and time-resolved emission spectroscopy with 25 ps resolution are used to measure equilibrium and dynamic aspects of the solvation of coumarin 153 (C153) in a diverse collection of 21 room-temperature ionic liquids. The ionic liquids studied here include several phosphonium and imidazolium liquids previously reported as well as 12 new ionic liquids that incorporate two homologous series of ammonium and pyrrolidinium cations. Steady-state absorption and emission spectra are used to extract solvation free energies and reorganization energies associated with the S0 <--> S1 transition of C153. These quantities, especially the solvation free energy, vary relatively little in ionic liquids compared to conventional solvents. Some correlation is found between these quantities and the mean separation between ions (or molar volume). Time-resolved anisotropies are used to observe solute rotation. Rotation times measured in ionic liquids correlate with solvent viscosity in much the same way that they do in conventional polar solvents. No special frictional coupling between the C153 and the ionic liquid solvents is indicated by these times. But, in contrast to what is observed in most low-viscosity conventional solvents, rotational correlation functions in ionic liquids are nonexponential. Time-resolved Stokes shift measurements are used to characterize solvation dynamics. The solvation response functions in ionic liquids are also nonexponential and can be reasonably represented by stretched-exponential functions of time. The solvation times observed are correlated with the solvent viscosity, and the much slower solvation in ionic liquids compared to dipolar solvents can be attributed to their much larger viscosities. Solvation times of the majority of ionic liquids studied appear to follow a single correlation with solvent viscosity. Only liquids incorporating the largest phosphonium cation appear to follow a distinctly different correlation.

Abstract
We have investigated solvent and rotational relaxation of coumarin 153 (C-153) in room-temperature ionic liquid (RTILs) 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([bmim][BF(4)]) and the ionic liquid confined in alkyl poly(oxyethylene glycol) ethers containing micelles. We have used octaethylene glycol monotetradecyl ether (C(14)E(8)) and octaethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C(12)E(8)) as surfactants. In the [bmim][BF(4)]-C(14)E(8) micelle, we have observed only a 22% increase in solvation time compared to neat [bmim][BF(4)], whereas in the [bmim][BF(4)]-C(12)E(8) system, we have observed approximately 57% increase in average solvation time due to micelle formation. However, the slowing down in solvation time on going from neat RTIL to RTIL-confined micelles is much smaller compared to that on going from water to water confined micellar aggregates. The 22-57% increase in solvation time is attributed to the slowing down of collective motions of cations and anions in micelles. The rotational relaxation times become faster in both the micelles compare to neat [bmim][BF(4)].

Abstract
Addition of ionic liquids to aqueous surfactant solutions can alter/modify physicochemical properties of such systems in favorable manner. Changes in the properties of aqueous solutions of a useful nonionic surfactant Triton X-100 (TX-100) are assessed upon addition of 2.1 wt% of a common and popular ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (bmimPF6). It is shown that the solubility of 'hydrophobic' bmimPF6 in aqueous TX-100 increases with TX-100 concentration. This observation combined with the conductivity data strongly indicates partitioning of bmimPF6 into TX-100 micellar phase. Behavior of a variety of molecular absorbance [methyl orange, phenol blue, and N,N-diethyl-4-nitroaniline] and fluorescence [phenyl on the TX-100, pyrene, pyrene-1-carboxaldehyde, 2-(p-toluidino)naphthalene-6-sulfonate, and 1,3-bis-(1-pyrenyl)propane] probes further confirm this observation. Statistically insignificant increase in critical micelle concentration (cmc) and decrease in aggregation number (N(agg)) of TX-100 micelles are observed upon addition of 2.1 wt% bmimPF6. Based on the overall data, it is inferred that ionic liquid bmimPF6 partitions into the TX-100 micellar phase; presence of bmimPF6 both close to the core as well as in the palisade layer of TX-100 micelles is suggested. Presence of favorable interactions (e.g., H-bonding, dipole-induced dipole, among others) between bmimPF6 and TX-100 is proposed to be the reason for these observations.

Abstract
Dynamic Stokes shift measurements of the solvatochromic probe trans-4-dimethylamino-4'-cyanostilbene were used to measure the solvation response of five imidazolium and one pyrrolidinium ionic liquid at 25 degrees C. The Kerr-gated emission and time-correlated single-photon-counting techniques were used to measure spectral dynamics occurring over the time ranges of 100 fs-200 ps and 50 ps-5 ns, respectively, and a combination of data sets from these two techniques enabled observation of the complete solvation response. Observed response functions were found to be biphasic, consisting of a sub-picosecond component of modest (10-20%) amplitude and a dominant slower component relaxing over times of a few picoseconds to several nanoseconds. The faster component could be correlated to inertial characteristics of the constituent ions, and the slower component to solvent viscosity. Dielectric continuum calculations of the sort previously used to predict solvation dynamics in dipolar liquids were shown to work poorly for predicting the response in these ionic liquids.
