Flow-induced effects in mixed surfactant mesophases

Intercalating lithium into the lattice of silver nanoparticles boosts catalytic hydrogenation of carbon-oxygen bonds

Coinage metal nanoparticles with high dispersion can serve as highly efficient heterogeneous catalysts. However, owing to their low melting point, poor thermal stability remains a major obstacle towards their application under reaction conditions. It is a common practice to use porous inorganic templates such as mesoporous silica SBA-15 to disperse Ag nanoparticles (NPs) against aggregation but their stability is far from satisfactory. Here, we show that the catalytic activity for hydrogenation of dimethyl oxalate (DMO) to methyl glycolate (MG) over Ag NPs dispersed on SBA-15 silica can be further promoted by incorporation of alkali metal ions at small loading, which follows the inverse order of their cationic size: Li+ > Na+ > K+ > Rb+. Among these, 5Ag1-Li0.05/SBA-15 can double the MG yield compared to pristine 5Ag/SBA-15 under identical conditions with superior thermal stability. Akin to the effect of an ionic surfactant on stabilization of a micro-emulsion, the cationic charge of an alkali metal ion can maintain dispersion and modulate the surface valence of Ag NPs. Interstitial Li in the octahedral holes of the face center packed Ag lattice is for the first time confirmed by X-ray pair distribution function and electron ptychography. It is believed that this interstitial-stabilization of coinage metal nanoparticles could be broadly applicable to multi-metallic nanomaterials for a broad range of C-O bond activating catalytic reactions of esters.

Full-field neutron microscopy based on refractive optics

Placing a compound refractive lens (CRL) as an objective in a neutron beam generates new possibilities for 2D and 3D nondestructive mapping of the structure, strain and magnetic domains within extended objects. A condenser setup is introduced that allows correction for the lateral chromatic aberration. More generally, for full-field microscopy the loss in performance caused by the chromatic aberration can be more than offset by introducing arrays of CRLs and exploiting the fact that the field of view can be much larger than the physical aperture of the CRL. Comments are made on the manufacture of such devices. The potential use is illustrated by comparisons between state-of-the-art instrumentation and suggested approaches for bright-field microscopy, small-angle neutron scattering microscopy, grain mapping and mapping of stresses. Options are discussed for depth-resolved imaging inspired by confocal light microscopy. Finally, experimental demonstrations are given of some of the basic properties of neutron full-field imaging for a single CRL.

Probing flow-induced nanostructure of complex fluids in arbitrary 2D flows using a fluidic four-roll mill (FFoRM)

Engineering flow processes to direct the microscopic structure of soft materials represents a growing area of materials research. In situ small-angle neutron scattering under flow (flow-SANS) is an attractive probe of fluid microstructure under simulated processing conditions, but current capabilities require many different sample environments to fully interrogate the deformations a fluid experiences in a realistic processing flow. Inspired by recent advances in microfluidics, we present a fluidic four-roll mill (FFoRM) capable of producing tunable 2D flow fields for in situ SANS measurements, that is intended to allow characterization of complex fluid nanostructure under arbitrary complex flows within a single sample environment. Computational fluid dynamics simulations are used to design a FFoRM that produces spatially homogeneous and sufficiently strong deformation fields. Particle tracking velocimetry experiments are then used to characterize the flows produced in the FFoRM for several classes of non-Newtonian fluids. Finally, a putative FFoRM-SANS workflow is demonstrated and validated through the characterization of flow-induced orientation in a semi-dilute cellulose nanocrystal dispersion under a range of 2D deformations. These novel experiments confirm that, for steady state straining flows at moderate strain rates, the nanocrystals orient along the principal strain-rate axis, in agreement with theories for rigid, rod-like Brownian particles in a homogeneous flow.

Neutron imaging using a conventional small-angle neutron scattering instrument

Neutron imaging has enjoyed a flurry of activity and application in recent years. The construction of dedicated beamlines at various neutron sources has demonstrated the significant interest among the science and engineering communities, with particular relevance to industrial applications, the nondestructive testing of components and imaging of precious archaeological artefacts. Here two methods are demonstrated of how neutron imaging can be performed using a conventional small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) instrument, such as D33 at the Institut Laue–Langevin, with spatial resolutions down to about 100 µm. The first is a magnified imaging technique from a quasi-point-like source with the magnified image recorded on the usual low-resolution SANS detector. The second method uses a fine beam in a raster-scan measurement over the area of interest. Images can be reconstructed either using the transmitted beam, as in conventional radiographic imaging, or from scattering data, giving access to transmission radiographic images as well as the dark-field or scattering contrasts and phase-contrast images.

Microfluidic processing of concentrated surfactant mixtures: online SAXS, microscopy and rheology

We investigate the effect of microfluidic flow on the microstructure and dynamics of a model surfactant mixture, combining synchrotron Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS), microscopy and rheology. A system comprising a single-chain cationic surfactant, hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (C16TAC), a short-chain alcohol (1-pentanol) and water was selected for the study due to its flow responsiveness and industrial relevance. Model flow fields, including sequential contraction-expansion (extensional) and rotational flows, were investigated and the fluid response in terms of the lamellar d-spacing, orientation and birefringence was monitored in situ, as well as the recovery processes after cessation of flow. Extensional flows are found to result in considerable d-spacing increase (from approx 59 Å to 65 Å). However, under continuous flow, swelling decreases with increasing flow velocity, eventually approaching the equilibrium values at velocities ≃2 cm s(-1). Through individual constrictions we observe the alignment of lamellae along the flow velocity, accompanied by increasing birefringence, followed by an orientation flip whereby lamellae exit perpendicularly to the flow direction. The resulting microstructures are mapped quantitatively onto the flow field in 2D with 200 μm spatial resolution. Rotational flows alone do not result in appreciable changes in lamellar spacing and flow type and magnitude evidently impact the fluid microstructure under flow, as well as upon relaxation. The findings are correlated with rheological properties measured ex situ to provide a mechanistic understanding of the effect of flow imposed by tubular processing units in the phase behavior and performance of a model surfactant system with ubiquitous applications in personal care and coating industries.

Orientation of a dispersion of kaolinite flowing in a jet

Orientational alignment in a dilute dispersion of kaolinite particles has been investigated in a flow pattern that combines both shear and elongational stress, namely flow at a jet created by a 2 mm diameter nozzle inserted in a 6 mm diameter pipe. Spatially-resolved X-ray diffraction with synchrotron radiation permits detailed maps of the alignment to be deduced and compared with fluid mechanics calculations of the flow. The angular distribution of diffracted intensity from a given position in the pipe provides information about the orientation distribution of the particles. This is quantified and presented in terms of order parameters. The cone-shaped nozzle provides a jet of liquid giving a high degree of alignment of the particles that is uniform along lines across the conical section and constant in the small straight-sided region at the exit of the nozzle. The vortex motion that arises from the flow with a modest Reynolds number could be determined as well as the tendency for some particles to align with their large faces perpendicular to the overall flow direction at the flat surface of the nozzle outlet.
