Sub-nanometer Control of the Interlayer Spacing in Thin Films of Intercalated Rodlike Conjugated Molecules

Infinite Organic Solid-Solution Semiconductors with Continuous Evolution in Film Morphology, Crystalline Lattice and Electrical Properties

Constructing a solid solution is an effective strategy for regulating the properties of composite organic semiconductors. However, there presents significant challenges in fabrication and understanding of organic solid-solution semiconductors. In this study, infinite solid-solution semiconductors are successfully achieved by integrating rod-like organic molecules, thereby overcoming the limitations of current organic composite semiconductors. Within these solid solutions, one type of molecule are incorporated into the crystalline lattice of another through random substitution. The continuous evolution in film morphology, crystalline lattice parameters and physical properties are observed as component ratios vary, accompanying with changes in the growth behavior of films. Molecular-level intercalation is evidenced by Davydov splitting, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and optical absorption analyses. Moreover, the continuous variation in ionization potential is demonstrated through organic Schottky diodes. This advancement in organic solid solutions can not only satisfy diverse requirements for device fabrication but also facilitate novel designs in device architecture.

Organic Semiconductor Single Crystals for Electronics and Photonics

Organic semiconducting single crystals (OSSCs) are ideal candidates for the construction of high-performance optoelectronic devices/circuits and a great platform for fundamental research due to their long-range order, absence of grain boundaries, and extremely low defect density. Impressive improvements have recently been made in organic optoelectronics: the charge-carrier mobility is now over 10 cm² V^-1 s^-1 and the fluorescence efficiency reaches 90% for many OSSCs. Moreover, high mobility and strong emission can be integrated into a single OSSC, for example, showing a mobility of up to 34 cm² V^-1 s^-1 and a photoluminescence yield of 41.2%. These achievements are attributed to the rational design and synthesis of organic semiconductors as well as improvements in preparation technology for crystals, which accelerate the application of OSSCs in devices and circuits, such as organic field-effect transistors, organic photodetectors, organic photovoltaics, organic light-emitting diodes, organic light-emitting transistors, and even electrically pumped organic lasers. In this context, an overview of these fantastic advancements in terms of the fundamental insights into developing high-performance organic semiconductors, efficient strategies for yielding desirable high-quality OSSCs, and their applications in optoelectronic devices and circuits is presented. Finally, an overview of the development of OSSCs along with current challenges and future research directions is provided.

Structural order in perfluoropentacene thin films and heterostructures with pentacene

Synchrotron x-ray diffraction reciprocal space mapping was performed on perfluoropentacene (PFP) thin films on SiO2 in order to determine the crystal structure of a novel, substrate-induced thin film phase to be monoclinic with unit cell parameters of a = 15.76 +/- 0.02 A, b = 4.51 +/- 0.02 A, c = 11.48 +/- 0.02 A, and beta = 90.4 +/- 0.1 degrees . Moreover, layered and co-deposited heterostructures of PFP and pentacene (P) were investigated by specular and grazing-incidence x-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. For a ca. three-monolayers-thick PFP film grown on a P underlayer, slightly increased lattice spacing was found. In contrast, co-deposited P/PFP films form a new mixed-crystal structure with no detectable degree of phase separation. These results highlight the structural complexity of these technically relevant molecular heterojunctions for use in organic electronics.
