Molecular dynamics investigation of dipeptide-transition metal salts in aqueous solutions

Solubilities of Amino Acids in Aqueous Solutions of Chloride or Nitrate Salts of Divalent (Mg2+ or Ca2+) Cations

The solubilities of glycine, l-leucine, l-phenylalanine, and l-aspartic acid were measured in aqueous MgCl₂, Mg(NO₃)₂, CaCl_2,, and Ca(NO₃)₂ solutions with concentrations ranging from 0 to 2 mol/kg at 298.2 K. The isothermal analytical method was used combined with the refractive index measurements for composition analysis guaranteeing good accuracy. All salts induced a salting-in effect with a higher magnitude for those containing the Ca²⁺ cation. The nitrate anions also showed stronger binding with the amino acids, thus increasing their relative solubility more than the chloride anions. In particular, calcium nitrate induces an increase in the amino acid solubility from 2.4 (glycine) to 4.6 fold (l-aspartic acid) compared to the corresponding value in water. Amino acid solubility data in aqueous MgCl₂ and CaCl₂ solutions collected from the open literature were combined with that from this work, allowing us to analyze the relations between the amino acid structure and the salting-in magnitude.

Review on metal dissolution characteristics and harmful metals recovery from electronic wastes by supercritical water

Supercritical water (SCW) technology can be applied as an efficient and environment-friendly method to recover toxic or complex chemical wastes. Separation and chemical reactions under supercritical conditions may be realized by changing the temperature, pressure, and other operating parameters to adjust the physical and chemical properties of water. However, salt deposition and corrosion are often encountered during the treatment of inorganic substances, which will hinder the commercial applications of SCW technology. The solubility of salt in high pressure/temperature water forms the theoretical basis for studying the recovery of metal salts in supercritical water and understanding salt deposition. Therefore, this work systematically and objectively reviews different research methods used to analyze salt solubility in high pressure/temperature water, including the experimental method, prediction theoretical modeling, and computer simulation method; the research status and existing data of this parameter are also analyzed. The purpose of this review is to provide ideas and references for follow-up research by providing a comprehensive overview of salt solubility research methods and the current situation. Suggestions for more efficient metal recovery through technology integration are also provided.

Conformation and Metal Cation Binding of Zwitterionic Alanine Tripeptide in Saline Solutions by Infrared Vibrational Spectroscopy and Molecular Dynamics Simulations

In this work, linear infrared (IR) spectroscopy and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were used to examine the interaction of different metal cations (Na⁺, Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, and Zn²⁺) with backbone (amide C═O) and C-terminal carboxylate (COO^-) groups in zwitterionic alanine tripeptide (Ala3) in aqueous solutions with varying saline concentrations. Circular dichroism spectra and MD results suggest that Ala3 is predominantly in polyproline-II (PP_II) conformation, whose amide-I and asymmetric carboxylate stretching IR vibration signatures are also supported by quantum-chemistry calculations. The zwitterionic form of Ala3 separates the two amide-I modes in frequency, which are weakly coupled modes, as revealed by two-dimensional IR measurement, and can be used to probe backbone-cation interactions at different scenarios (near charged or neutral chemical groups respectively). Cation concentration-dependent IR frequency red shifts in the amide-I mode are seen for both amide-I modes, whereas blue shifts are also seen in the amide-I mode far from the NH₃⁺ group. The observed spectral changes are discussed from the perspective of the salting-in and salting-out abilities of the cations. In addition, all the metal cations studied here (except Zn²⁺) can specifically coordinate to the COO^- group in bidentate and pseudo-bridging forms simultaneously. For Zn²⁺, only the pseudo-bridging form exists. Our results shed light on the macroscopic protein salting-in and salting-out phenomena from the perspective of key chemical bonds in peptides.

QM/MM investigations of organic chemistry oriented questions

About 35 years after its first suggestion, QM/MM became the standard theoretical approach to investigate enzymatic structures and processes. The success is due to the ability of QM/MM to provide an accurate atomistic picture of enzymes and related processes. This picture can even be turned into a movie if nuclei-dynamics is taken into account to describe enzymatic processes. In the field of organic chemistry, QM/MM methods are used to a much lesser extent although almost all relevant processes happen in condensed matter or are influenced by complicated interactions between substrate and catalyst. There is less importance for theoretical organic chemistry since the influence of nonpolar solvents is rather weak and the effect of polar solvents can often be accurately described by continuum approaches. Catalytic processes (homogeneous and heterogeneous) can often be reduced to truncated model systems, which are so small that pure quantum-mechanical approaches can be employed. However, since QM/MM becomes more and more efficient due to the success in software and hardware developments, it is more and more used in theoretical organic chemistry to study effects which result from the molecular nature of the environment. It is shown by many examples discussed in this review that the influence can be tremendous, even for nonpolar reactions. The importance of environmental effects in theoretical spectroscopy was already known. Due to its benefits, QM/MM can be expected to experience ongoing growth for the next decade.In the present chapter we give an overview of QM/MM developments and their importance in theoretical organic chemistry, and review applications which give impressions of the possibilities and the importance of the relevant effects. Since there is already a bunch of excellent reviews dealing with QM/MM, we will discuss fundamental ingredients and developments of QM/MM very briefly with a focus on very recent progress. For the applications we follow a similar strategy.
