Abstract
The antifouling effects of a toothbrush-shaped photo-responsive polyzwitterionic membrane were studied via dissipative particle dynamics simulations in this work. The results reveal that the membrane modified by spiropyran methacrylate brushes displays photo-switchable and antifouling capability due to the photo-induced ring-opening reaction. Namely, surface morphology and hydrophilicity change in response to visible or UV light irradiation, which can be observed visually by protein adsorption and desorption. Further study indicates that: (1) brush-modification density can influence the structure and properties of the membrane. With low modification density, systems cannot establish an intact selective layer, which hinders the antifouling ability; as the modification density increases, the intact selective layer can be formed, which is conducive to the expression of photo-responsiveness and antifouling capability. (2) Factors of toothbrush-hair length and grafting ratio can influence the establishment of a light-responsive surface: as the grafting ratio and toothbrush-hair length increase, the light-responsive surface is gradually formed, meanwhile, the antifouling ability can be continuously reinforced under UV light irradiation. (3) As the brushes switch into a zwitterionic merocyanine state under UV exposure, the selective layer swelling becomes stronger than that with a hydrophobic spiropyran state under visible exposure. This is owing to the enhanced interaction between zwitterionic brushes and water, which is the root of the antifouling effect. The present work is expected to provide some guidelines for the design and development of novel antifouling membrane surfaces.

Abstract
Photochromic compounds of the spiropyran family have two main isomers capable of inter-switching with UV or visible light. In the current review, we discuss recent advances in the synthesis, investigation of properties, and applications of spiropyran derivatives. Spiropyrans of the indoline series are in focus as the most promising representatives of multi-sensitive spirocyclic compounds, which can be switched by a number of external stimuli, including light, temperature, pH, presence of metal ions, and mechanical stress. Particular attention is paid to the structural features of molecules, their influence on photochromic properties, and the reactions taking place during isomerization, as the understanding of the structure-property relationships will rationalize the synthesis of compounds with predetermined characteristics. The main prospects for applications of spiropyrans in such fields as smart material production, molecular electronics and nanomachinery, sensing of environmental and biological molecules, and photopharmacology are also discussed.

Abstract
Photochromism of spiropyrans has attracted much attention due to its potential in many light-controlled system applications. However, several fundamental aspects regarding the structure, energetics, and mechanistic details of the transformations of spiropyrans are still not well understood. Here, we report the study of the photochromism of a 6-hydroxy-spiropyran (HBPS) under conditions of matrix isolation, where monomers of the compound are frozen in a solidified noble gas (krypton, at 15 K). The structure of the matrix-isolated HBPS was first elucidated by infrared (IR) spectroscopy supported by density functional theory computations. Then, the photochromism of HBPS, from the colorless spiropyran to the colored merocyanine, was induced by ultraviolet (UV) irradiation at 310 nm. The analysis of the IR spectrum of the photoproduced species revealed the exclusive formation of the most stable merocyanine MC-TTC stereoisomer. Subsequent visible-light (550 nm) irradiation of MC-TTC generated a new colorless allenic isomeric species ALN, where the UV irradiation (310 nm) of ALN was found to convert this species back to MC-TTC. This constitutes an unprecedented bidirectional transformation between a colored merocyanine and a colorless allene species. The newly observed photoswitching reaction (or photochromism) occurs along an intramolecular hydrogen bond existing in both merocyanine and allenic species, thus suggesting that it might be generally feasible in the chemistry of spiropyrans. On the other hand, the usual assumption that, as a general rule, merocyanines photochemically revert to spiropyrans is not supported in this work.

Abstract
In this paper, spiropyran-containing metal- and covalent-organic frameworks (MOFs and COFs, respectively) are probed as platforms for fostering photochromic behavior in solid-state materials, while simultaneously promoting directional energy transfer (ET). In particular, Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) between spiropyran and porphyrin derivatives integrated as linkers in the framework matrix is discussed. The photochromic spiropyran derivatives allow for control over material optoelectronic properties through alternation of excitation wavelengths. Photoinduced changes in the material electronic profile have also been probed through conductivity measurements. Time-resolved photoluminescence studies were employed to evaluate the effect of photochromic linkers on material photophysics. Furthermore, "forward" and "reverse" FRET processes occurring between two distinct chromophores were modeled, and the Förster critical radii and ET rates were estimated to support the experimentally observed changes in material photoluminescence.

Abstract
Photoinduced ring-opening, decay, and isomerization of spirobenzopyran have been explored by the OM2/MRCI nonadiabatic dynamics simulations based on Tully's fewest-switches surface hopping scheme. The efficient S1 to S0 internal conversion as observed in experiments is attributed to the existence of two efficient excited-state decay pathways. The first one is related to the C-N dissociation, and the second one is done to the C-O dissociation. The C-O dissociation pathway is dominant, and more than 90% trajectories decay to the S0 state via the C-O bond-fission related S1/S0 conical intersections. Near these regions in the S0 state, trajectories can either return to spirobenzopyran or proceed to various intermediates including merocyanine via a series of bond rotations. Our nonadiabatic dynamics simulations also demonstrate that the hydrogen-out-of-plane (HOOP) motion is important for efficient and ultrafast excited-state deactivation. On the other hand, we have also found that the replacement of methyl groups by hydrogen atoms in spirobenzopyran can artificially introduce different intramolecular hydrogen transfers leading to hydrogen-transferred intermediates. This finding is important for the community and demonstrates that such a kind of structural truncation, sometimes, could be problematic, leading to incorrect photodynamics. Our present work provides valuable insights into the photodynamics of spirobenzopyran, which could be helpful for the design of spiropyran-based photochromic materials.

Abstract
The photophysical and isomerization properties of hybrid molecular compounds that consist of photochromic nitro-substituted and halogenated spiropyran derivatives bonded to the surface of the [60]fullerene cage through the pyrrolidine bridge were investigated using various functionals and basis sets of TD-DFT and semiempirical quantum-chemical approaches. The role of nπ* states formed by the lone pairs of substituents in changing of the electronic structure and photochromic properties of spiropyran derivatives was evaluated. The Sππ(spiropyran) → intermediate nπ* states → Sππ(merocyanine) channel for phototransformation of the hybrid compound containing a nitro-substituted spiropyran moiety was established and compared with similar systems of halogenated spiropyrans attached to the [60]fullerene bulk where photoinduced isomerization does not process due to high probability of internal conversion from the excited electronic state localized on the spiropyran fragment to the states of the pyrrolidino[60]fullerene.

Abstract
Coherent multidimensional electronic spectroscopy can be employed to unravel various channels in molecular chemical reactions. This approach is thus not limited to analysis of energy transfer or charge transfer (i.e. processes from photophysics), but can also be employed in situations where the investigated system undergoes permanent structural changes (i.e. in photochemistry). Photochemical model reactions are discussed by using the example of merocyanine/spiropyran-based molecular switches, which show a rich variety of reaction channels, in particular ring opening and ring closing, cis-trans isomerization, coherent vibrational wave-packet motion, radical ion formation, and population relaxation. Using pump-probe, pump-repump-probe, coherent two-dimensional and three-dimensional, triggered-exchange 2D, and quantum-control spectroscopy, we gain intuitive pictures on which product emerges from which reactant and which reactive molecular modes are associated.

Abstract
Irradiation of [Ru(bpy)2(bpSOp)](PF6)2 (where bpy is 2,2'-bipyridine and bpSOp is 1,3-bis(phenylsulfinyl)propane) results in the formation of two new isomers, namely the S,O- and O,O-bonded species. The crystal structure of the bis-thioether and bis-sulfoxide complexes are reported. NMR spectroscopy of the bis-thioether complex in solution is consistent with the molecular structure determined by diffraction methods. Further, NMR spectroscopy of the bis-sulfoxide complex reveals two conformers in solution, one that is consistent with the solid state structure and a second conformer showing distortion in the aliphatic portion of the chelate ring. Time-resolved visible absorption spectroscopy reveals isomerization time constants of 91 ps in dichloroethane (DCE) and 229 ps in propylene carbonate (PC). Aggregate isomerization quantum yields of 0.57 and 0.42 have been determined in DCE and in PC, respectively. The kinetics of the thermal reversion from the O,O- to S,O-bonded isomer are strongly solvent dependent, occurring with rates of 2.41 × 10(-3) and 4.39 × 10(-5) s(-1) in DCE, and 4.68 × 10(-4) and 9.79 × 10(-6) s(-1) in PC. The two kinetic components are assigned to the two isomers identified in solution.

Abstract
This study presents a computational investigation of the initial step of the dimethyldihydropyrene (DHP) to cyclophanediene (CPD) photoinduced ring-opening reaction using time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). In particular, the photochemical path corresponding to the formation of the CPD precursor (CPD*) on the zwitterionic state is scrutinized. The TD-DFT approach was first validated on the parent compound against accurate ab initio calculations. It confirms that CPD* formation is efficiently quenched in this system by an easily accessible S2/S1 conical intersection located in the vicinity of the CPD* minimum and leading to a locally excited state minimum responsible for DHP luminescence. Increased ring-opening quantum yields were observed in benzo[e]-fused-DHP (DHP-1), isobutenyl-DHP (DHP-2), and naphthoyl-DHP (DHP-3). The calculations show that CPD* formation is much more favorable in these systems, either due to an inversion of electronic states in DHP-1, suppressing the formation of the locally excited state, or due to efficient stabilization of CPD* on the S1 potential energy surface in DHP-2 and DHP-3. Both effects can be combined in a rationally designed benzo[e]-fused-naphthoyl-DHP (DHP-4) for which we anticipate an unprecedented efficiency.

Abstract
A mechanistic study of the intramolecular S → O linkage photoisomerization in the cis and trans isomers of [Ru(bpy)2(DMSO)2](2+) was performed using density functional theory. This study reveals that for the cis isomer the linkage photoisomerization of the two DMSO ligands occurs sequentially in the lowest triplet excited state and can either be achieved by a one-photon or by a two-photon mechanism. A mechanistic picture of the S → O photoisomerization of the trans isomer is also proposed. This work especially highlights that both adiabatic and nonadiabatic processes are involved in these mechanisms and that their coexistence is responsible for the rich photophysics and photochemical properties observed experimentally for the studied complexes. The different luminescent behavior experimentally observed at low temperature between the cis and trans isomers is rationalized based on the peculiarity of the topology of the triplet excited-state potential energy surfaces.

Abstract
Photochromic compounds efficiently transduce photonic energy to potential energy for excited-state bond-breaking and bond-forming reactions. A critical feature of this reaction is the nature of the electronic excited-state potential energy surface and how this surface facilitates large nuclear displacements and rearrangements. We have prepared two photochromic ruthenium sulfoxide complexes that feature two isomerization reactions following absorption of a single photon. We show by femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy that this reaction is complete within a few hundred picoseconds and suggest that isomerization occurs along a conical intersection seam formed by the ground-state and excited-state potential energy surfaces.

Abstract
A polarizable continnum model study and explicit solvation in water investigated through GPU-accelerated ab initio molecular dynamics followed by quantum-chemical calculations have been applied to the process of spiropyran to merocyanine isomerization of two spiropyran derivatives. It has been found that interaction with only one or two water molecules is sufficient to stabilize the merocyanine with respect to the spiropyran form. It has been shown that the agreement between energies obtained in implicit and explicit solvent models depends on the structure of the system and possible specific interactions (hydrogen bonds). Both solvent models predict similar effects in absorption spectra.

Abstract
Graphene has been functionalized with spiropyran (SP), a well-known photochromic molecule. It has been realized with pyrene-modified SP, which has been adsorbed on graphene by π-π interaction between pyrene and graphene. The field-effect transistor (FET) with SP-functionalized graphene exhibited n-doping effect and interesting optoelectronic behaviors. The Dirac point of graphene in the FET could be controlled by light modulation because spiropyran can be reversibly switched between two different conformations, a neutral form (colorless SP) and a charge-separated form (purple colored merocyanine, MC), on UV and visible light irradiation. The MC form is produced during UV light irradiation, inducing the shift of the Dirac point of graphene toward negative gate voltage. The reverse process back to the neutral SP form occurred under visible light irradiation or in darkness, inducing a shift of the Dirac point toward positive gate voltage. The change of the Dirac point by UV and visible light was reproducibly repeated. SP molecules also improved the conductance change in the FET device. Furthermore, dynamics on conversion from MC to SP on graphene was different from that in solution and solid samples with SP-grafted polymer or that on gold nanoparticles.

Abstract
The spirooxazine/merocyanine couple constitutes a photochromic system that can change from the colorless spirooxazine to the intensely colored merocyanine by thermal or photochemical activation by a reaction that opens the spiro ring of the oxazine. The mechanisms of the ring-opening/closure reactions that interconnect these two isomers have been elucidated by means of a computational study. First, we have used the CASSCF/CASPT2 method to determine in detail these mechanisms in the gas phase for a small model that contains the photoactive part of the whole system. We have found that the state of spirooxazine excited by the initial absorption changes gradually to a lower excited state that is involved in a conical intersection that connects it with the ground state of merocyanine. The same conical intersection is involved in the backward photochemical reaction. Second, using a larger model that includes all the heteroatoms of the system and using the DFT (B3LYP) method, we have studied the influence of a solvent environment on the thermal equilibrium between the open and the closed species. It has been observed experimentally that the thermal equilibrium between these forms is practically unaltered by polar aprotic solvents, but it can be displaced toward the colored form in mixtures of polar protic and aprotic solvents, even if the first one is found in a very small proportion. To reproduce the experimental environments, we have taken into account the long-range effect of the polar aprotic solvent considering it a polarizable continuum, as done in the PCM method, and the short-range effect of the protic solvent including some explicit water molecules in the cluster studied at the atomic level. The results obtained are in good agreement with the experimental observations and explain the reason for this peculiar behavior.
