Spectroscopic and Theoretical Investigations of ThS and ThS+

A data-driven approach to determine dipole moments of diatomic molecules

We present a data-driven approach for the prediction of the electric dipole moment of diatomic molecules, which is one of the most relevant molecular properties. In particular, we apply Gaussian process regression to a novel dataset to show that dipole moments of diatomic molecules can be learned, and hence predicted, with a relative error ⪅5%. The dataset contains the dipole moment of 162 diatomic molecules, the most exhaustive and unbiased dataset of dipole moments up to date. Our findings show that the dipole moment of diatomic molecules depends on atomic properties of the constituents atoms: electron affinity and ionization potential, as well as on (a feature related to) the first derivative of the electronic kinetic energy at the equilibrium distance.

Assessing the accuracy of simplified coupled cluster methods for electronic excited states in f0 actinide compounds

We scrutinize the performance of different variants of equation of motion coupled cluster (EOM-CC) methods to predict electronic excitation energies and excited state potential energy surfaces in closed-shell actinide species.

Bond dissociation energies of FeSi, RuSi, OsSi, CoSi, RhSi, IrSi, NiSi, and PtSi

Resonant two-photon ionization spectroscopy has been used to investigate the spectra of the diatomic late transition metal silicides, MSi, M = Fe, Ru, Os, Co, Rh, Ir, Ni, and Pt, in the vicinity of the bond dissociation energy. In these molecules, the density of vibronic states is so large that the spectra appear quasicontinuous in this energy range. When the excitation energy exceeds the ground separated atom limit, however, a new decay process becomes available-molecular dissociation. This occurs so rapidly that the molecule falls apart before it can absorb another photon and be ionized. The result is a sharp drop to the baseline in the ion signal, which we identify as occurring at the thermochemical 0 K bond dissociation energy, D₀. On this basis, the measured predissociation thresholds provide D₀ = 2.402(3), 4.132(3), 4.516(3), 2.862(3), 4.169(3), 4.952(3), 3.324(3), and 5.325(9) eV for FeSi, RuSi, OsSi, CoSi, RhSi, IrSi, NiSi, and PtSi, respectively. Using thermochemical cycles, the enthalpies of formation of the gaseous MSi molecules are derived as 627(8), 700(10), 799(10), 595(8), 599(8), 636(10), 553(12), and 497(8) kJ/mol for FeSi, RuSi, OsSi, CoSi, RhSi, IrSi, NiSi, and PtSi, respectively. Likewise, combining these results with other data provides the ionization energies of CoSi and NiSi as 7.49(7) and 7.62(7) eV, respectively. Chemical bonding trends among the diatomic transition metal silicides are discussed.

Electron correlation effects of the ThO and ThS molecules in the spinor basis. A relativistic coupled cluster study of ground and excited states properties

We present a comprehensive relativistic coupled cluster study of the electronic structures of the ThO and ThS molecules in the spinor basis. Specifically, we use the single-reference coupled cluster and the multi-reference Fock Space Coupled Cluster (FSCC) methods to model their ground and electronically-excited states. Two variants of the FSCC method have been investigated: (a) one where the electronic spectrum is obtained from sector (1,1) of the Fock space, and (b) another where the excited states come from the doubly attached electronic states to the doubly charged systems (ThO2+ and ThS2+), that is, from sector (0,2) of the Fock space. Our study provides a reliable set of spectroscopic parameters such as bond lengths, excitation energies, and vibrational frequencies, as well as a detailed analysis of the electron correlation effects in the ThO and ThS molecules. Finally, we examine the first ionization potential and electron affinity of the above mentioned molecules.

Spectroscopy and structure of the simplest actinide bonds

Understanding the influence of electrons in partially filled f- and d-orbitals on bonding and reactivity is a key issue for actinide chemistry. This question can be investigated by using a combination of well-defined experimental measurements and theoretical calculations. Gas phase spectroscopic data are particularly valuable for the evaluation of theoretical models. Consequently, the primary objectives of our research have been to obtain gas phase spectra for small actinide molecules. To complement the experimental effort, we are investigating the potential for using relativistic ab initio calculations and semiempirical models to predict and interpret the electronic energy level patterns for f-element compounds. Multiple resonance spectroscopy and jet cooling techniques have been used to unravel the complex electronic spectra of Th and U compounds. Recent results for fluorides, sulfides, and nitrides are discussed.
