Comparison of oxidation resistance of UHMWPE and POM in H2O2 solution from ReaxFF reactive molecular dynamics simulations

Reactive Molecular Dynamics Study of the Thermal Decomposition of Phenolic Resins

The thermal decomposition of polyphenolic resins was studied by reactive molecular dynamics (RMD) simulation at elevated temperatures. Atomistic models of the polyphenolic resins to be used in the RMD were constructed using an automatic method which calls routines from the software package Materials Studio. In order to validate the models, simulated densities and heat capacities were compared with experimental values. The most suitable combination of force field and thermostat for this system was the Forcite force field with the Nosé–Hoover thermostat, which gave values of heat capacity closest to those of the experimental values. Simulated densities approached a final density of 1.05–1.08 g/cm3 which compared favorably with the experimental values of 1.16–1.21 g/cm3 for phenol-formaldehyde resins. The RMD calculations were run using LAMMPS software at temperatures of 1250 K and 3000 K using the ReaxFF force field and employing an in-house routine for removal of products of condensation. The species produced during RMD correlated with those found experimentally for polyphenolic systems and rearrangements to form cyclopropane moieties were observed. At the end of the RMD simulations a glassy carbon char resulted.

The Evidence Behind Peroxide in Orthopedic Surgery

Peroxide is a strong oxidizing agent and disinfectant frequently used in orthopedic surgery. The authors conducted a systematic literature review of peroxide in orthopedic surgery, evaluating use, complications, efficacy, and appropriate concentrations. One hundred seventy-five reports were identified, with 24 being eligible for analysis. Orthopedic surgeons used peroxide for irrigation and bacterial reduction in various procedures. Complications included cytotoxicity, allergic reactions, suture damage, and inflammation. Use of the standard concentration of 3% peroxide and standard time in situ are without evidence. Laboratory studies suggest that diluted concentrations retain the benefit of bacterial decolonization without increasing the risk for complications. [Orthopedics. 2018; 41(6):e756-e764.].

Oxyhydroxide of metallic nanowires in a molecular H2O and H2O2 environment and their effects on mechanical properties

To avoid unexpected environmental mechanical failure, there is a strong need to fully understand the details of the oxidation process and intrinsic mechanical properties of reactive metallic iron (Fe) nanowires (NWs) under various aqueous reactive environmental conditions. Herein, we employed ReaxFF reactive molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to elucidate the oxidation of Fe NWs exposed to molecular water (H2O) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) environment, and the influence of the oxide shell layer on the tensile mechanical deformation properties of Fe NWs. Our structural analysis shows that oxidation of Fe NWs occurs with the formation of different iron oxide and hydroxide phases in the aqueous molecular H2O and H2O2 oxidizing environments. We observe that the resulting microstructure due to pre-oxide shell layer formation reduces the mechanical stress via increasing the initial defect sites in the vicinity of the oxide region to facilitate the onset of plastic deformation during tensile loading. Specifically, the oxide layer of Fe NWs formed in the H2O2 environment has a relatively significant effect on the deterioration of the mechanical properties of Fe NWs. The weakening of the yield stress and Young modulus of H2O2 oxidized Fe NWs indicates the important role of local oxide microstructures on mechanical deformation properties of individual Fe NWs. Notably, deformation twinning is found as the primary mechanical plastic deformation mechanism of all Fe NWs, but it is initially observed at low strain and stress level for the oxidized Fe NWs.
