Scattering of hyperthermal nitrogen atoms from the Ag(111) surface

An unexpected surfactant role of immiscible nitrogen in the structural development of silver nanoparticles: an experimental and numerical investigation

Artificially designing the crystal orientation and facets of noble metal nanoparticles is important to realize unique chemical and physical features that are very different from those of noble metals in bulk geometries. However, relative to their counterparts synthesized in wet-chemical processes, vapor-depositing noble metal nanoparticles with the desired crystallographic features while avoiding any notable impurities is quite challenging because this task requires breaking away from the thermodynamically favorable geometry of nanoparticles. We used plasma-generated N atoms as a surface-active agent, a so-called surfactant, to control the structural development of Ag nanoparticles supported on a chemically heterogeneous ZnO substrate. The N-surfactant-facilitated sputter deposition provided strong selectivity for crystalline orientation and facets, leading to a highly flattened nanoparticle shape that clearly deviated from the energetically favorable spherical polyhedra, due to the drastic decreases in the surface free energies of Ag nanoparticles in the presence of the N surfactant. The Ag nanoparticles successively developed a nearly unidirectional (111) orientation aligned by stimulating the crystalline coupling of Ag along the orientation of the ZnO substrate. The experimental and simulation results not only offer new insights into the advantages of N as a surfactant for the orientation and shape-controlled synthesis of Ag nanoparticles via sputter deposition but also provide the first solid evidence validating that immiscible, nonresidual gaseous surfactants can be used in the vapor deposition processes of noble metal nanoparticles to manipulate their surface free energies.

Eley-rideal reactions with N atoms at Ru(0001): formation of NO and N(2)

Forward-directed NO molecules with large translational energies are formed upon exposure of an O-covered Ru(0001) surface to a nitrogen (N+N_{2}) beam. This is an unequivocal experimental demonstration of the Eley-Rideal reaction for a "heavy" (i.e., nonhydrogenated) neutral system. The time dependence of prompt NO formation exhibits an exceptionally fast decay as a consequence of shifting reaction pathways and probabilities over the course of the exposure. Prompt production shuts down as the O coverage decreases due to competition from more favorable Eley-Rideal production of N_{2}.

Competition between electron and phonon excitations in the scattering of nitrogen atoms and molecules off tungsten and silver metal surfaces

We investigate the role played by electron-hole pair and phonon excitations in the interaction of reactive gas molecules and atoms with metal surfaces. We present a theoretical framework that allows us to evaluate within a full-dimensional dynamics the combined contribution of both excitation mechanisms while the gas particle-surface interaction is described by an ab initio potential energy surface. The model is applied to study energy dissipation in the scattering of N(2) on W(110) and N on Ag(111). Our results show that phonon excitation is the dominant energy loss channel, whereas electron-hole pair excitations represent a minor contribution. We substantiate that, even when the energy dissipated is quantitatively significant, important aspects of the scattering dynamics are well captured by the adiabatic approximation.

Scattering of hyperthermal argon atoms from clean and D-covered Ru(0001) surfaces

Hyperthermal Ar atoms were scattered from a Ru(0001) surface held at temperatures of 180, 400 and 600 K, and from a Ru(0001)-(1×1)D surface held at 114 and 180 K. The resultant angular intensity and energy distributions are complex. The in-plane angular distributions have narrow (FWHM ≤ 10°) near-specular peaks and additional off-specular features. The energy distributions show an oscillatory behavior as a function of outgoing angle. In comparison, scattered Ar atoms from a Ag(111) surface exhibit a broad angular intensity distribution and an energy distribution that qualitatively tracks the binary collision model. The features observed for Ru, which are most evident when scattering from the clean surface at 180 K and from the Ru(0001)-(1×1)D surface, are consistent with rainbow scattering. The measured TOF profiles cannot be adequately described with a single shifted Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution. They can be fitted by two components that exhibit complex variations as a function of outgoing angle. This suggests at least two significantly different site and∕or trajectory dependent energy loss processes at the surface. The results are interpreted in terms of the stiffness of the surface and highlight the anomalous nature of the apparently simple hcp(0001) ruthenium surface.
