Spectroscopic Observation of Fractal Packing of Oxygen in Variably Modified Glassy Tetrahedral Networks

Dynamics in inorganic glass-forming liquids by NMR spectroscopy

Dynamical NMR spectroscopy provides unique mechanistic understanding of the transport and relaxation processes in glass-forming liquids over timescales typically ranging from ~10^-9 s to ~10² s, and thus has been used extensively in the past to study the dynamical behavior of polymeric and organic glass-forming liquids. However, reports in the literature of similar studies on inorganic glass-forming liquids have remained somewhat limited due to the experimental challenges. In this contribution we present a review of the high-temperature NMR spectroscopic studies of atomic and molecular dynamics in a wide variety of inorganic glass-forming liquids including oxides, halides and chalcogenides as well as select ionic liquids and molten salts. The significance of these dynamical processes in understanding the nature of the liquid-to-glass transition and their connection with the macroscopic transport properties of these liquids are discussed.

Probing of Triply Coordinated Oxygen in Amorphous Al2O3

Although anomalous melt properties have been attributed to the presence of triply coordinated oxygen (^[3]O), the presence of ^[3]O in covalent amorphous oxides has not been revealed experimentally; such verification is the Holy Grail in the study of the physics and chemistry of glasses. We report the first ¹⁷O NMR spectrum for amorphous Al₂O₃ and reveal the hidden nature of ^[3]O. The detailed NMR characteristics of the oxygen tricluster are distinct from those estimated for the crystalline analogs, thus indicating its unique structure. This unambiguous evidence of the presence of ^[3]O allows us to microscopically constrain its glass-forming ability and unique two-step crystallization paths of amorphous Al₂O₃ through the annihilation of glassy ^[3]O with multiple ^[5]Al species.

Modifier cation effects on (29)Si nuclear shielding anisotropies in silicate glasses

We have examined variations in the (29)Si nuclear shielding tensor parameters of SiO4 tetrahedra in a series of seven alkali and alkaline earth silicate glass compositions, Cs2O·4.81 SiO2, Rb2O·3.96 SiO2, Rb2O·2.25 SiO2, K2O·4.48 SiO2, Na2O·4.74 SiO2, BaO·2.64 SiO2, and SrO·2.36 SiO2, using natural abundance (29)Si two-dimensional magic-angle flipping (MAF) experiments. Our analyses of these 2D spectra reveal a linear dependence of the (29)Si nuclear shielding anisotropy of Q((3)) sites on the Si-non-bridging oxygen bond length, which in turn depends on the cation potential and coordination of modifier cations to the non-bridging oxygen. We also demonstrate how a combination of Cu(2+) as a paramagnetic dopant combined with echo train acquisition can reduce the total experiment time of (29)Si 2D NMR measurements by two orders of magnitude, enabling higher throughput 2D NMR studies of glass structure.

Ion distribution in copper exchanged zeolites by using Si-29 spin lattice relaxation analysis

Transition metal-containing zeolites, particularly those with smaller pore size, have found extensive application in the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of environmental pollutants containing nitrogen oxides. We report these zeolites have dramatically faster silicon-29 (Si-29) spin lattice relaxation times (T1) compared to their sodium-containing counterparts. Paramagnetic doping allows one to acquire Si-29 MAS spectra in the order of tens of seconds without significantly affecting the spectral resolution. Moreover, relaxation times depend on the method of preparation and the next-nearest neighbor silicon Qn(mAl) sites, where n=4 and m=0-4, respectively. A clear trend is noted between the effectiveness of Cu exchange and the Si-29 NMR relaxation times. It is anticipated that the availability of this tool, and the enhanced understanding of the nature of the active sites, will provide the means for designing improved SCR catalysts.

Communication: Dimensionality of the ionic conduction pathways in glass and the mixed-alkali effect

A revised empirical relationship between the power law exponent of ac conductivity dispersion and the dimensionality of the ionic conduction pathway is established on the basis of electrical impedance spectroscopic (EIS) measurements on crystalline ionic conductors. These results imply that the "universal" ac conductivity dispersion observed in glassy solids is associated with ionic transport along fractal pathways. EIS measurements on single-alkali glasses indicate that the dimensionality of this pathway D is ∼2.5, while in mixed-alkali glasses, D is lower and goes through a minimum value of ∼2.2 when the concentrations of the two alkalis become equal. D and σ display similar variation with alkali composition, thus suggesting a topological origin of the mixed-alkali effect.

On the Mass Fractal Character of Si-Based Structural Networks in Amorphous Polymer Derived Ceramics

The intermediate-range packing of SiN_xC_4−x (0 ≤ x ≤ 4) tetrahedra in polysilycarbodiimide and polysilazane-derived amorphous SiCN ceramics is investigated using ²⁹Si spin-lattice relaxation nuclear magnetic resonance (SLR NMR) spectroscopy. The SiCN network in the polysilylcarbodiimide-derived ceramic consists predominantly of SiN₄ tetrahedra that are characterized by a 3-dimensional spatial distribution signifying compact packing of such units to form amorphous Si₃N₄ clusters. On the other hand, the SiCN network of the polysilazane-derived ceramic is characterized by mixed bonded SiN_xC_4−x tetrahedra that are inefficiently packed with a mass fractal dimension of D_f ~2.5 that is significantly lower than the embedding Euclidean dimension (D = 3). This result unequivocally confirms the hypothesis that the presence of dissimilar atoms, namely, 4-coordinated C and 3-coordinated N, in the nearest neighbor environment of Si along with some exclusion in connectivity between SiC_xN_4−x tetrahedra with widely different N:C ratios and the absence of bonding between C and N result in steric hindrance to an efficient packing of these structural units. It is noted that similar inefficiencies in packing are observed in polymer-derived amorphous SiOC ceramics as well as in proteins and binary hard sphere systems.
