Behavior of oil droplets on an electrified solid metal surface immersed in ionic surfactant solutions

Reduced-Order Model for Surfactant-Laden Electrified Sessile Droplets

A comprehensive understanding of the physics of electrowetting of a surfactant-laden droplet is important for applications in rapid healthcare diagnostics. A majority of biological samples examined during point-of-care (POC) diagnostics are biofluids with dissolved surfactants, such as the respiratory droplets containing protein (mucin) and surfactant molecules like dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine. The presence of these surfactant molecules is anticipated to have a significant impact on the performance of electrowetting-based POC diagnostic devices. A reduced-order model is developed using the weighted residual integral boundary layer theory for the electrowetting of a surfactant-laden sessile droplet in a parallel plate electrode configuration. Thin film evolution equations are obtained for the fluid-fluid interface, the surfactant concentration, the depth-integrated flow rate, and the interfacial charge density. We show that the presence of surfactants opposes and decreases the strength of the electrohydrodynamic flow due to Marangoni stress-driven convection. The droplet then responds to an AC field with a suppressed amplitude of oscillation and the same mean deformation as that under DC forcing. Thus, low-frequency AC forcing with a suitable surfactant can plausibly be employed as a viable alternative to more energy-intensive high-frequency AC forcing.

Emulsions in external electric fields

Water is co-produced with crude oils, generally in the form of water-in-crude oil emulsions. The oil and water phases need to be separated before export. Separation is performed in gravity separators with the addition of chemical demulsifiers and, sometimes, with the application of an electric field by using an electrocoalescer. The present article reviews several aspects of electrocoalescence by considering the effect of the electric field from the molecular to a macroscopic scale: the oil-water interface, single drop effects, two drop interactions, and finally emulsions at laboratory scales. Experimental results together with Dissipative Particle Dynamics (DPD) simulation results are presented. The review begins with water-oil interface under an electric field and followed by single drop electrohydrodynamics. The electric field is shown to influence the adsorption of crude oil indigenous surface-active components (asphaltenes) due to the electrohydrodynamic (EHD) flows. The interactions between two droplets in the presence of electric field and the factors governing the drop-drop coalescence are discussed in detail. DPD simulations help to elucidate thin film breakup during (electro)-coalescence of two water droplets, where the oil film has drained out to nanometer thickness. The film is comprised of surfactant and demulsifier molecules, and the simulations capture the pores formation in the film when a DC field is applied. The results demonstrate influence of the molecular structure of the surfactant and demulsifier, and their interactions. The subsequent section describes experimental techniques to assess the resolution of crude oil emulsions at the laboratory scale. The focus is on low-field Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (LF-NMR) which allows a determination of various emulsion features such as the droplet size distribution (DSD) and the brine profile (variation of the concentration of water with the height of the emulsion sample) and their evolution with time. Application of the technique in emulsion treatment involving chemical demulsifiers and electric field is presented. The review concludes with description of commercial industrial electrocoalecers such as the Vessel Internal Electrostatic Coalescer (VIEC) and the Compact Electrostatic Coalescer (CEC).

Surfactant and electric field strength effects on surface tension at liquid/liquid/solid interfaces

We performed a series of experiments designed to elucidate the effects of the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactant and an applied electrical field on the wetting behavior in a system containing a sessile droplet of phenylmethyl polysiloxane (PMPS) oil on a polished stainless steel surface submersed in aqueous solution. The voltage difference ranged from -3 to +3 V, which is at least 3 orders of magnitude smaller than from comparable recent work. We report the measured equilibrium contact angle of the droplet as a function of surfactant concentration and field strength. We then modeled the system. We solved the Laplace equation to obtain the 3D field within our system. We expanded the three surface tensions (oil droplet-aqueous solution (oa), oil droplet-metal surface (os), and aqueous solution-metal surface (as)) in a Taylor series with respect to surfactant concentration and local field strength. We use these three surface tensions in Young's equation to obtain the theoretical contact angle of the organic droplet. We demonstrate that the large changes in contact angle due to the simultaneous presence of small concentrations of surfactant and small voltage differences can be accounted for by changes in the oa and as surface tensions.
