Interactions in water of alkyl and perfluoroalkyl surfactants with fluorocarbon- and hydrocarbon-modified poly(N-isopropylacrylamides)

Interaction between casein and the oppositely charged surfactant

The interactions between the classical cationic surfactant dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) and 2.0 mg/mL casein were investigated using isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), turbidity, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and fluorescence spectra measurements. The results suggest that the cationic headgroup of the surfactant individually binds to the negatively charged amino acid sites on the casein chains because of the electrostatic attraction upon the addition of DTAB. When the surfactant concentration reaches a critical value c1, DTAB forms micelle-like aggregates on the casein chain, resulting in the formation of insoluble casein/DTAB complexes. Further addition of DTAB leads to the redissolution of casein/DTAB complexes because of the net positive charge on casein/DTAB complexes and the formation of DTAB free micelles. The addition of salt screens the repulsion between the surfactant headgroups and the attraction between casein and surfactant molecules, which weakens the binding of surfactant onto the casein chain, favoring the formation of free surfactant micelles.

Dual magnetic-/temperature-responsive nanoparticles for microfluidic separations and assays

A stimuli-responsive magnetic nanoparticle system for diagnostic target capture and concentration has been developed for microfluidic lab card settings. Telechelic poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) polymer chains were synthesized with dodecyl tails at one end and a reactive carboxylate at the opposite end by the reversible addition fragmentation transfer technique. These PNIPAAm chains self-associate into nanoscale micelles that were used as dimensional confinements to synthesize the magnetic nanoparticles. The resulting superparamagnetic nanoparticles exhibit a gamma-Fe2O3 core ( approximately 5 nm) with a layer of carboxylate-terminated PNIPAAm chains as a corona on the surface. The carboxylate group was used to functionalize the magnetic nanoparticles with biotin and subsequently with streptavidin. The functionalized magnetic nanoparticles can be reversibly aggregated in solution as the temperature is cycled through the PNIPAAm lower critical solution temperature (LCST). While the magnetophoretic mobility of the individual nanoparticles below the LCST is negligible, the aggregates formed above the LCST are large enough to respond to an applied magnetic field. The magnetic nanoparticles can associate with biotinylated targets as individual particles, and then subsequent application of a combined temperature increase and magnetic field can be used to magnetically separate the aggregated particles onto the poly(ethylene glycol)-modified polydimethylsiloxane channel walls of a microfluidic device. When the magnetic field is turned off and the temperature is reversed, the captured aggregates redisperse into the channel flow stream for further downstream processing. The dual magnetic- and temperature-responsive nanoparticles can thus be used as soluble reagents to capture diagnostic targets at a controlled time point and channel position. They can then be isolated and released after the nanoparticles have captured target molecules, overcoming the problem of low magnetophoretic mobility of the individual particle while retaining the advantages of a high surface to volume ratio and faster diffusive properties during target capture.

Preparation of novel fluoroalkyl-end-capped 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid cooligomeric nanoparticles containing adamantane units possessing a lower critical solution temperature characteristic in organic media

Fluoroalkyl-end-capped 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid cooligomers containing adamantyl segments were prepared by reaction of fluoroalkanoyl peroxide with 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS) and 3-hydroxy-1-adamantyl acrylate (Ad-HAc). These obtained fluorinated AMPS-Ad-HAc cooligomers were found to form nanometer-size-controlled fine particles not only in water but also in a large variety of traditionally organic solvents. In addition, these fluorinated cooligomeric nanoparticles showed a good dispersibility in these solvents. Interestingly, the size of these fluorinated nanoparticles is extremely sensitive to solvent changes, and an increase of the particle size was observed in the solvents, in which the dielectric constant is higher or lower. More interestingly, these fluorinated AMPS-Ad-HAc cooligomeric nanoparticles exhibited a lower critical solution temperature around 52 degrees C in an organic medium (tert-butyl alcohol).

Survey of the year 2005: literature on applications of isothermal titration calorimetry

Isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) can provide a full thermodynamic characterization of an interaction. Its usage does not suffer from constraints of molecular size, shape or chemical constitution. Neither is there any need for chemical modification or attachment to solid support. This ease of use has made it an invaluable instrumental resource and led to its appearance in many laboratories. Despite this, the value of the thermodynamic parameterization has, only quite recently, become widely appreciated. Although our understanding of the correlation between thermodynamic data and structural details continues to be somewhat naïve, a large number of publications have begun to improve the situation. In this overview of the literature for 2005, we have attempted to highlight works of interest and novelty. Furthermore, we draw attention to those works which we feel have provided a route to better analysis and increased our ability to understand the meaning of thermodynamic change on binding.

Calorimetric investigation of the interaction between lithium perfluorononanoate and poly(ethylene glycol) oligomers in water

The interaction of lithium perfluorononanoate (LiPFN) with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) molecules of different molecular weights (300 < MW < 20000 Da) has been investigated in water at 298.15 and 308.15 K by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). Density, viscosity, and conductivity measurements were also performed at 298.15 K. The aggregation process of this surfactant on the PEG polymeric chain was found to be very similar to that exhibited by cesium perfluorooctanoate (CsPFO) and appears to be consistent with the necklace model. ITC titrations indicated that a fully formed LiPFN micellar cluster can be wrapped by a PEG chain having a molecular weight (MW) of approximately 3200 Da, longer than that required by the shorter perfluorooctanoate (MW approximately 2600 Da), and also suggested a stepwise mechanism for the aggregation of successive micelles. Viscosity data indicate that the formation of polymer-surfactant complexes between PEG and LiPFN involves a conformational change of the polymer. The aggregation of preformed micelles of LiPFN or CsPFO or SDS on the PEG polymeric chain always gives rise to further stabilization.
