Abstract
We introduce a novel concept in nucleic acid delivery based on the use of mixed polymeric micelles (MPMs) as platforms for the preparation of micelleplexes with DNA. MPMs were prepared by the co-assembly of a cationic copolymer, poly(1-(4-methylpiperazin-1-yl)-propenone)-b-poly(d,l-lactide), and nonionic poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(propylene oxide)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) block copolymers. We hypothesize that by introducing nonionic entities incorporated into the mixed co-assembled structures, the mode and strength of DNA binding and DNA accessibility and release could be modulated. The systems were characterized in terms of size, surface potential, buffering capacity, and binding ability to investigate the influence of composition, in particular, the poly(ethylene oxide) chain length on the properties and structure of the MPMs. Endo-lysosomal conditions were simulated to follow the changes in fundamental parameters and behavior of the micelleplexes. The results were interpreted as reflecting the specific structure and composition of the corona and localization of DNA in the corona, predetermined by the poly(ethylene oxide) chain length. A favorable effect of the introduction of the nonionic block copolymer component in the MPMs and micelleplexes thereof was the enhancement of biocompatibility. The slight reduction of the transfection efficiency of the MPM-based micelleplexes compared to that of the single-component polymer micelles was attributed to the premature release of DNA from the MPM-based micelleplexes in the endo-lysosomal compartments.

Abstract
Stimuli-responsive copolymers are of great interest for targeted drug delivery. This study reports on a controllable post-polymerization quaternization with 2-bromomethyl-4-fluorophenylboronic acid of the poly(4-vinyl pyridine) (P4VP) block of a common poly(styrene)-b-poly(4-vinyl pyridine)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (SVE) triblock terpolymer in order to achieve a selective responsivity to various diols. For this purpose, a reproducible method was established for P4VP block quaternization at a defined ratio, confirming the reaction yield by 11B, 1H NMR. Then, a reproducible self-assembly protocol is designed for preparing stable micelles from functionalized stimuli-responsive triblock terpolymers, which are characterized by light scattering and by cryogenic transmission electron microscopy. In addition, UV-Vis spectroscopy is used to monitor the boron-ester bonding and hydrolysis with alizarin as a model drug and to study encapsulation and release of this drug, induced by sensing with three geminal diols: fructose, galactose and ascorbic acid. The obtained results show that only the latter, with the vicinal diol group on sp2-hybridized carbons, was efficient for alizarin release. Therefore, the post-polymerization method for triblock terpolymer functionalization presented in this study allows for preparation of specific stimuli-responsive systems with a high potential for targeted drug delivery, especially for cancer treatment.

Abstract
Dissipative Particle Dynamics (DPD) is a mesoscopic simulation program used to simulate the behavior of complex fluids. This work systematically reviews the use of DPD to simulate the self-assembly process of pH-sensitive drug-loaded nanoparticles. pH-sensitive drug-loaded nanoparticles have the characteristics of good targeting and slow release in the body, which is an ideal method for treating cancer and other diseases. As an excellent simulation method, DPD can help people explore the loading and release laws of drugs with complex molecular structures and has extensive applications in other medical fields. This article reviews the self-assembly process of pH-sensitive polymers under neutral conditions and explores the factors that affect the self-assembly structure. It points out that different hydrophilic-hydrophobic ratios, molecular structures, and component distributions will affect the morphology, stability and drug carrying capacity of micelles. This article also introduces the release mechanism of the drug in detail and introduces the factors that affect the release. This article can help relevant researchers to follow the latest advances in the DPD simulation and pH-sensitive drug nano-carrier and insight people to investigate the further application of DPD simulation in biomedical science.

Abstract
Conjugated polymers (CPs) can be fabricated into conjugated polymer nanoparticles of various shapes, thus tuning the hydrophobicity and sensing performances of the parent polymers. Herein, two new hydrophobic oligomeric CPs containing pyrene-pyridyl moieties, P1 and P2, were directly prepared and conveniently converted into hydrophilic nanorods, i.e. P1NRs and P2NRs (about 4-21 and 6-20 nm in diameter), by a modified microemulsion method. Notably, separated P1NRs exhibit excellent stability while P2NRs tend to stack on each other perhaps due to their different rigidity of π-delocalized backbones, which may have a profound effect on their fluorescence properties. In addition, Pd2+ can coordinate with the pyridyl N atoms, thereby causing ultrasensitive fluorescence quenching of P1NRs and P2NRs owing to the aggregation of oligomeric CP nanorods. These two simple nanosensors can help to determine Pd2+ with detection limits as low as 1 and 70 nM, respectively. It is worth noting that biocompatible P1NRs with bright blue fluorescence can be employed for efficient imaging of trace level Pd2+ ions in live cells.

Abstract
Association behavior of diblock copolymer poly(4-hydroxystyrene)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (PHOS-PEO) in aqueous solutions and solutions in water/tetrahydrofuran mixtures was studied by static, dynamic, and electrophoretic light scattering, (1)H NMR spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and cryogenic field-emission scanning electron microscopy. It was found that, in alkaline aqueous solutions, PHOS-PEO can form compact spherical nanoparticles whose size depends on the preparation protocol. Instead of a core/shell structure with segregated blocks, the PHOS-PEO nanoparticles have intermixed PHOS and PEO blocks due to hydrogen bond interaction between -OH groups of PHOS and oxygen atoms of PEO and are stabilized electrostatically by a fraction of ionized PHOS units on the surface.

Abstract
Formation of polyelectrolyte-surfactant (PE-S) complexes of poly[3,5-bis(trimethylammoniummethyl)-4-hydroxystyrene iodide]-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (QNPHOS-PEO) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in aqueous solution was studied by dynamic and electrophoretic light scattering, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), atomic force microscopy, and fluorometry, using pyrene as a fluorescent probe. SAXS data from the QNPHOS-PEO/SDS solutions were fitted assuming contributions from free copolymer, PE-S aggregates described by a mass fractal model, and densely packed surfactant micelles inside the aggregates. It was found that, unlike other systems of a double hydrophilic block polyelectrolyte and an oppositely charged surfactant, PE-S aggregates of the QNPHOS-PEO/SDS system do not form core-shell particles and the PE-S complex precipitates before reaching the charge equivalence between dodecyl sulfate anions and QNPHOS polycationic blocks, most likely because of conformational rigidity of the QNPHOS blocks, which prevents the system from the corresponding rearrangement.

Abstract
The micelles of poly(styrene-b-3-(methacryloylamino)propyltrimethylammonium chloride-b-ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PMAPTAC-b-PEO) have been successfully prepared in aqueous solutions. The micelles have a PS core, cationic PMAPTAC shell, and PEO corona. Due to the short PS chain (degree of polymerization = 8), the formation of micelles is difficult at a low concentration, and the micelles are detected only at concentrations higher than 1 g L–1. The addition of anionic amphiphiles, such as sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA), induces the formation of mixed micelles at a low concentration level of the polymer (~0.005 g L–1). This can be ascribed to insolubilization of the cationic PMAPTAC block due to charge neutralization by the anionic amphiphiles. The binding of SDS or PMAA to the PMAPTAC block is confirmed by zeta-potential measurements. The mixed micelles are characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and fluorescence measurements. Based on DLS measurements, it is revealed that the hydrodynamic diameter of the mixed micelles falls in the range of 120–130 nm. SEM measurements provided clear pictures of mixed micelles with a spherical morphology. The kinetics of exchange of organic dyes between the micelle particles was investigated by fluorescence techniques. The result indicates that the exchange of the dyes between the micelle particles takes places within a time scale of seconds.

Abstract
Polymeric micelles from a new triblock copolymer, polystyrene-block-poly[(3-(methacryloylamino)propyl)trimethylammonium chloride]-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PMAPTAC-b-PEO), were prepared in aqueous solutions and characterized by various techniques including dynamic light scattering (DLS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and fluorescence spectroscopy. The micelle consists of a PS core, PMAPTAC shell, and PEO corona. It was revealed by SEM and DLS measurements that the micelles have a spherical structure with a hydrodynamic diameter about 75 nm. The addition of tungstate to the micellar solution caused a morphological change in the micelles from extended to shrunken spheres, which can be attributed to the fact that electrostatic repulsion among the cationic PMAPTAC blocks is canceled by the negative charge of the bound tungstate ions. Effective incorporation of tungstate ions into the micelles were confirmed by TEM and zeta-potential measurements.

Abstract
The amphiphilic polystyrene- block-poly((sulfamate-carboxylate)isoprene) (PS-PISC) diblock copolymer was synthesized from the precursor diblock copolymer polystyrene- block-isoprene by reaction with chlorosulfonyl isocyanate. The structure and behavior of self-assembled PS-PISC nanoparticles was studied in alkaline and acidic aqueous solutions by a combination of static and dynamic light scattering, analytical ultracentrifugation, atomic force and cryogenic transmission electron microscopies, NMR spectroscopy, potentiometric titration, and fluorometry using pyrene as a polarity-sensitive fluorescent probe. It was found that PS-PISC exists in aqueous solutions in the form of micellar aggregates. The aggregation tendency increases with decreasing effective charge density in the shell, that is, with decreasing pH of the solution, and aggregates found in alkaline aqueous media have much smaller molar masses than those formed in acidic media. The latter are dense, collapsed structures with immobile PISC domains in which most of the COOH and NH 2 (+)SO 3 (-) groups are buried inside of the nanoparticles. The swelling of PISC domains and disentanglement of PISC chains after addition of a base are slow processes occurring on the time scale of days.

Abstract
We report on a method of fabricating stimuli-responsive core-shell nanoparticles using block copolymers covalently bound to a silica nanoparticle surface. We used the "grafting to" approach to graft amphiphilic block copolymer brushes of poly(styrene-b-2-vinylpyridine-b-ethylene oxide) and poly(styrene-b-4-vinylpyridine) onto silica nanoparticles with two different diameters: colloidal silica 200 nm in diameter and fumed silica 15 nm in diameter. We used the pH-responsive properties of the grafted brush to regulate the interactions between the particles, and between the particles and their environment. We show that this behavior can be applied for a reversible formation of particle aggregates, and can be used to tune and stabilize the secondary aggregates of particles of the appropriate size and morphology in an aqueous environment. The suspensions of the particles form a textured hydrophilic coating on various substrates upon casting and the evaporation of water. Heating above the polymer's glass transition temperature or treatment in acidic water result in back and forth switching between superhydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces, respectively.

Abstract
Aqueous solutions of self-assembled nanoparticles formed by biocompatible diblock copolymers of poly(epsilon-caprolactone)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (PCL-PEO) with the same molar mass of the PEO block (5000 g mol-1) and three different molar masses of the PCL block (5000, 13 000, and 32 000 g mol-1) have been prepared by a fast mixing the copolymer solution in a mild selective solvent, tetrahydrofuran (THF)/water, with an excess of water, that is, by quenching the reversible micellization equilibrium, and a subsequent removal of THF by dialysis of the water-rich solution against water. The prepared nanoparticles have been characterized by static and dynamic light scattering and atomic force microscopy imaging. It was found that stable monodisperse nanoparticles are formed only if the initial mixed solvent contained 90 vol % THF. The results show that the prepared nanoparticles are spherical vesicles with relatively thick hydrophobic walls, that is, spherical core/shell nanoparticles with the hollow core filled with the solvent.

Abstract
The three-layer onion micelles formed in aqueous solution by hierarchical self-assembly of polystyrene-block-poly(2-vinylpyridine) micelles, PS-PVP, and poly(2-vinylpyridine)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) chains, PVP-PEO, were studied by a combination of light scattering (LS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Section analysis of AFM images of micelles deposited on mica in combination with LS data from micellar solutions provide distribution functions of sizes from which the number and mass distributions of molar masses of micelles can be evaluated. Both light scattering and AFM data reveal that the used preparation protocol yields onion micelles accompanied by an admixture of PVP-PEO micelles. It means that only a certain amount of PVP-PEO self-assembles with PS-PVP and forms onion micelles. The remaining PVP-PEO copolymer forms either small PVP-PEO micelles or participates in formation of large aggregates at longer times. The time-dependent measurements show that both onion-type and core-shell PVP-PEO micelles are fairly stable over a long time period and only a low fraction of large aggregate forms on the timescale of weeks and at longer times, the solution does not change any more.

Abstract
The hydration of the poly(oxyethylene) shell in polystyrene-block-poly(2-vinylpyridine)-block-poly(oxyethylene) micelles was investigated by monitoring the solvent relaxation response of a solvent-sensitive fluorophore (patman). It has been found that the relaxation occurs on the nanosecond time scale. Results for triblock copolymer micelles have been compared with those obtained for polystyrene-block-poly(2-vinylpyridine) micelles in order to evaluate the effect of the outer polyoxyethylene layer. Considerable pH-dependent changes in the hydration of poly(oxyethylene) units at the poly(2-vinylpyridine)/polyoxyethylene interface were observed. Additionally, the paper shows that the solvent relaxation technique is a suitable tool for studying polymeric nanoparticles and that the measurement of time-dependent half-width of the emission spectrum allows for estimation of the extent of relaxation process observed by a given experimental setup.
