Hexagonal-to-cubic phase transformation in composite thin films induced by FePt nanoparticles located at PS/PEO interfaces

Long PEO-based nanoribbons generated in a polystyrene matrix through reaction-induced microphase separation followed by a fast crystallization process

A dispersion of elongated nanostructures with a high aspect ratio in polymer matrices has been reported to provide a material with valuable properties such as mechanical strength, barrier effect and shape memory, among others. In this study, we show the procedure to achieve a distribution of elongated crystalline nanodomains in a PS matrix employing the self-assembly of amphiphilic block copolymers (BCP). The selected BCP was polystyrene-block-polyethylene oxide (PS-b-PEO). It was dissolved at 10 wt% in a styrene (St) monomer and the blend was slowly photopolymerized over four days at room temperature, until the reaction was arrested by vitrification. This blend was initially homogeneous and nanostructuration took place in an early stage of the polymerization as a result of the microphase separation (MS) of PEO blocks. Due to its high tendency to crystallize, demixed PEO blocks crystallized almost concomitantly with MS triggering the growing of the nanostructures. Thus, the time window between the onset of crystallization and the vitrification of the matrix was almost four days, allowing all micelles to have the opportunity to couple to a growing nanostructure. As a result, a population of nanoribbons with average lengths surpassing 10 μm dispersed in a PS matrix was obtained. It was demonstrated that these ribbon-like nanostructures are preserved as long as the heating temperature is located below the Tg of the matrix. If the material is heated above this temperature, softening of the matrix allows the breakup of the molten PEO nanoribbons due to Plateau-Rayleigh instability.

Homogeneous Embedding of Magnetic Nanoparticles into Polymer Brushes during Simultaneous Surface-Initiated Polymerization

Here we present a facile and efficient method of controlled embedding of inorganic nanoparticles into an ultra-thin (<15 nm) and flat (~1.0 nm) polymeric coating that prevents unwanted aggregation. Hybrid polymer brushes-based films were obtained by simultaneous incorporation of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) with diameters of 8⁻10 nm into a polycationic macromolecular matrix during the surface initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) reaction in an ultrasonic reactor. The proposed structures characterized with homogeneous distribution of separated nanoparticles that maintain nanometric thickness and strong magnetic properties are a good alternative for commonly used layers of crosslinked nanoparticles aggregates or bulk structures. Obtained coatings were characterized using atomic force microscopy (AFM) working in the magnetic mode, secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

High refractive index in low metal content nanoplasmonic surfaces from self-assembled block copolymer thin films

Materials with a high and tunable refractive index are attractive for nanophotonic applications. In this contribution, we propose a straightforward fabrication technique of high-refractive index surfaces based on self-assembled nanostructured block copolymer thin films. The selective and customizable metal incorporation within out-of-plane polymer lamellae produces azimuthally isotropic metallic nanostructures of defined geometries, which were analysed using microscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering techniques. Variable-angle spectroscopic ellipsometry was used to relate the geometrical parameters of the metallic features and the resulting refractive index of the patterned surfaces. In particular, nanostructured gold patterns with a high degree of homogeneity and a gold content as low as 16 vol% reach a refractive index value of more than 3 in the visible domain. Our study thus demonstrates a new route for the preparation of high refractive index surfaces with a low metal content for optical applications.

Optimization of Magnetic Inks Made of L1(0)-Ordered FePt Nanoparticles and Polystyrene-block-Poly(ethylene oxide) Copolymers

The preparation of magnetic inks stable over time made of L10-ordered FePt nanoparticles, thiol-ended poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether (mPEO-SH) compatibilizing macromolecules and asymmetric polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) copolymers (BCP) as a subsequent self-organizing medium was optimized. It was demonstrated that the use of sacrificial MgO shells as physical barriers during the annealing stage for getting the L10-ordered state makes easier and more efficient the anchoring of compatibilizing PEO macromolecules onto the nanoparticles surface. L10-FePt grafted nanoparticles have shown a good colloidal stability and affinity with the PEO domains of the BCP leading to L10-FePt/BCP composite thin layers with individual magnetic dots dispersed in the BCP matrix.

Square and rectangular symmetry tiles from bulk and thin film 3-miktoarm star terpolymers

The directed self assembly of a 3-miktoarm star terpolymer (polyisoprene-arm-polystyrene-arm-polyferrocenylethylmethylsilane (3μ-ISF)) into a (4.8²) square symmetry Archimedean tiling pattern is described. Bulk samples of 3μ-ISF generate equilibrium columnar (4.8²) tile patterns (symmetry p 4 mm) on annealing, which is preceded by a metastable c 2 mm centered rectangular structure. In contrast, in thin films of 3μ-ISF blended with PS homopolymer, the c 2 mm phase is stable with columns oriented out of plane when the film thickness is below 50 nm. However, the 3μ-ISF/homopolymer blend rapidly forms a p 4 mm symmetry when the film thickness is ∼80 nm, with grain sizes of several μm and excellent order. Defects in the p 4 mm structure are described.

Three-Dimensional Periodically Ordered Nanohetero Metallic Materials from Self-Assembled Block Copolymer Composites

We report a synthetic route to inorganic nanoheterostructures with tunable size and morphology via self-assembled block copolymer mesophase templates. Two Fe precursors, tricarbonyl(cyclooctatetraene) iron and acetylacetonate iron(III), and one Pt precursor, platinum dimethylcyclooctadiene, were selectively introduced into separate polymer blocks of a block copolymer, polystyrene-b-poly-4-vinylpyridine, and then the block copolymer templates were removed by pyrolysis. Self-assembled inorganic nanoheterostructures (spheres, hexagonal cylinders, and layers of hard magnetic phase FePt in a matrix of soft magnetic phase α-Fe) were produced. The morphology and domain size of the nanoheterostructures could be tailored by controlling the molecular weight and relative block lengths of the block copolymers. The controlled size and morphology of the inorganic nanoheterostructures demonstrate the method's utility for producing highly functional materials.

Molecularly functionalized silicon substrates for orientation control of the microphase separation of PS-b-PMMA and PS-b-PDMS block copolymer systems

The use of block copolymer (BCP) thin films to generate nanostructured surfaces for device and other applications requires precise control of interfacial energies to achieve the desired domain orientation. Usually, the surface chemistry is engineered through the use of homo- or random copolymer brushes grown or attached to the surface. Herein, we demonstrate a facile, rapid, and tunable approach to surface functionalization using a molecular approach based on ethylene glycol attachment to the surface. The effectiveness of the molecular approach is demonstrated for the microphase separation of PS-b-PMMA and PS-b-PDMS BCPs in thin films and the development of nanoscale features at the substrate.

Ordered nanoscale Archimedean tilings of a templated 3-miktoarm star terpolymer

The directed self-assembly of 3-miktoarm star terpolymer chains (polyisoprene-arm-polystyrene-arm-polyferrocenylethylmethylsilane (3 μ-ISF)) into 2D Archimedean tilings is described. A morphological change from (4.8(2)) to (6(3)) tiling is reported in the 3 μ-ISF thin film blended with PS homopolymer when a greater swelling of PI is achieved during the solvent annealing process. Highly oriented (4.8(2)) tilings were produced by templating the self-assembled three colored structures in blended thin films. The use of (4.8(2)) and (6(3)) tilings as nanolithographic masks to transfer square and triangular hole arrays into the substrate is also demonstrated.

Nanoscale block copolymer ordering induced by visible interferometric micropatterning: a route towards large scale block copolymer 2D crystals

We have overcome the cost and time consumption limitations of common lithography techniques used to control the self-assembly of block copolymers into highly ordered 2D arrays through the use of a guiding pattern created from a polymeric sub-layer. The guiding pattern is a sinusoidal surface-relief grating interferometrically inscribed onto an azobenzene containing copolymer sub-layer leading to a defect-free single grain of block copolymer domains.
