Surface topographies of biomimetic superamphiphobic materials: design criteria, fabrication and performance

Superamphiphobicity is a wetting phenomenon that not only water but also oils or organic solvents with low surface tension exhibit large contact angles above 150° along with low contact angle hysteresis on solid surface. It is well known that both chemical constituent and surface roughness have impacts on the wettability of solid surface. Herein, several fundamental wetting states and design criteria for re-entrant structures are introduced first. Then, various chemical modification materials endowing solid substrates low surface energy are summarized subsequently. Furthermore, roughening processes conferring hierarchical or re-entrant topographic structures on surfaces are classified based on different types of topographies abstracted from the natural oil-repellent creatures (mushroom-like structures) as well as bio-inspired superamphiphobic surfaces (i.e., randomly distributed nanostructures, regularly patterned microstructures and other complex hierarchical structures). Significantly, the impalement pressure and formulated rules of various re-entrant profiles are recommended in detail. At the same time, fabrication, outstanding performances such as mechanical durability, chemical stability are also mentioned according to different types of morphologies. Beyond that, current fabrication obstacles and future prospects are proposed simultaneously in the end.

Optimization of Patterned Surfaces for Improved Superhydrophobicity through Cost-Effective Large-Scale Computations

The pattern design of superhydrophobic surfaces can be significantly aided by computations that predict the Cassie-Baxter (CB) to Wenzel (W) transition, which is responsible for the break-down of superhydrophobic behavior. We present a computational framework for the optimization of patterned surfaces based on the energy barriers of the CB-W transitions which comprises the following elements: (a) design of structured surface patterns, for example, arrays of pillars, with parameterized geometric features such as size, pitch, slope, and roundness. (b) Computation of the wetting states with a modified Young-Laplace equation that facilitates the introduction of solid/liquid interactions for complex surface patterns and has significantly lower computational cost than other commonly used methods, such as the volume-of-fluid, phase-field, and so forth. (c) Incorporation of the modified Young-Laplace in the simplified string method, allowing the calculation of the minimum energy paths of wetting transitions which, apart from the energy barriers, also reveal the transition mechanisms (CB failure modes). (d) Accommodation of large-scale problems with good parallel performance and scalability on multicore-distributed memory systems using fast iterative solvers and the Message Passing Interface communication protocol. We demonstrate the computational framework with a shape optimization study of inverted conical frustum pillars. The optimization objective function is the resistance to the CB-W transition, which is quantified by the energy barrier-a relatively large energy barrier suggests improved superhydrophobicity. We also report the parallel performance, in terms of parallel speedup for problems ranging from three hundred thousands to 12 million degrees of freedom, solved using up to 40 processing cores.

The springtail cuticle as a blueprint for omniphobic surfaces

Omniphobic surfaces found in nature have great potential for enabling novel and emerging products and technologies to facilitate the daily life of human societies. One example is the water and even oil-repellent cuticle of springtails (Collembola). The wingless arthropods evolved a highly textured, hierarchically arranged surface pattern that affords mechanical robustness and wetting resistance even at elevated hydrostatic pressures. Springtail cuticle-derived surfaces therefore promise to overcome limitations of lotus-inspired surfaces (low durability, insufficient repellence of low surface tension liquids). In this review, we report on the liquid-repellent natural surfaces of arthropods living in aqueous or temporarily flooded habitats including water-walking insects or water spiders. In particular, we focus on springtails presenting an overview on the cuticular morphology and chemistry and their biological relevance. Based on the obtained liquid repellence of a variety of liquids with remarkable efficiency, the review provides general design criteria for robust omniphobic surfaces. In particular, the resistance against complete wetting and the mechanical stability strongly both depend on the topographical features of the nano- and micropatterned surface. The current understanding of the underlying principles and approaches to their technological implementation are summarized and discussed.
