Characterization of highly porous polymeric materials with pore diameters larger than 100 nm by mercury porosimetry and X-ray scattering methods

Percolation of rigid fractal carbon black aggregates

We examine network formation and percolation of carbon black by means of Monte Carlo simulations and experiments. In the simulation, we model carbon black by rigid aggregates of impenetrable spheres, which we obtain by diffusion-limited aggregation. To determine the input parameters for the simulation, we experimentally characterize the micro-structure and size distribution of carbon black aggregates. We then simulate suspensions of aggregates and determine the percolation threshold as a function of the aggregate size distribution. We observe a quasi-universal relation between the percolation threshold and a weighted average radius of gyration of the aggregate ensemble. Higher order moments of the size distribution do not have an effect on the percolation threshold. We conclude further that the concentration of large carbon black aggregates has a stronger influence on the percolation threshold than the concentration of small aggregates. In the experiment, we disperse the carbon black in a polymer matrix and measure the conductivity of the composite. We successfully test the hypotheses drawn from simulation by comparing composites prepared with the same type of carbon black before and after ball milling, i.e., on changing only the distribution of aggregate sizes in the composites.

Terahertz scattering and water absorption for porosimetry

We use terahertz transmission through limestone sedimentary rock samples to assess the macro and micro porosity. We exploit the notable water absorption in the terahertz spectrum to interact with the pores that are two orders of magnitude smaller (<1μm) than the terahertz wavelength. Terahertz water sensitivity provides us with the dehydration profile of the rock samples. The results show that there is a linear correlation between such a profile and the ratio of micro to macro porosity of the rock. Furthermore, this study estimates the absolute value of total porosity based on optical diffusion theory. We compare our results with that of mercury injection capillary pressure as a benchmark to confirm our analytic framework. The porosimetry method presented here sets a foundation for a new generation of less invasive porosimetry methods with higher penetration depth based on lower frequency (f<10THz) scattering and absorption. The technique has applications in geological studies and in other industries without the need for hazardous mercury or ionizing radiation.

Enhanced catalytic activity of gold nanoparticles doped in a mesoporous organic gel based on polymeric phloroglucinol carboxylic acid-formaldehyde

Gold nanoparticles were supported by a phloroglucinolcarboxylic acid-formaldehyde (PF) gel, a new organic gel with a 30 nm spheroid-like structure. The surface area of the PF gel with gold nanoparticles was 550 m(2)/g. Gold nanoparticles supported on a PF gel exhibited catalytic activity in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol with a reaction rate constant of 7.4 x 10(-3) s(-1), which is high in the reported heterogeneous reaction system. The adsorption behavior of 4-nitrophenol into the gel support was observed by ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy. Gold nanoparticles in the PF network were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy observation. The high reduction rate would be attributed to the extraction and diffusion of the reactant through the pores of a PF gel support to encounter the highly dispersed gold nanoparticles on the surface and inside the material.
