Abstract
Proper formulation of systems containing plasmonic and photochromic units, such as gold nanoparticles and azobenzene derivatives, yields materials and interfaces with synergic functionalities. Moreover, gold nanoparticles are known to accelerate the Z-E isomerization of azobenzene molecules in the dark. However, very little is known about the light-driven, plasmon-assisted Z-E isomerization of azobenzene compounds. Additionally, most of the azobenzene-gold hybrids are prepared with nanoparticles of small, isotropic shapes and azobenzene ligands covalently linked to the surface of nanostructures. Herein, a formulation of an innovative system combining azobenzene derivative, gold nanorods, and cellulose nanofibers is proposed. The system's structural integrity relies on electrostatic interactions among components instead of covalent linkage. Cellulose, a robust scaffold, maintains the material's functionality in water and enables monitoring of the material's plasmonic-photochromic properties upon irradiation and at elevated temperatures without gold nanorods aggregation. Experimental evidence supported by statistical analysis suggests that the optical properties of plasmonic nanometal enable indirect control over the Z-E isomerization of the photochromic component with near-infrared irradiation by triggering the thermoplasmonic effect. The proposed hybrid material's dual plasmonic-photochromic functionality, versatility, and ease of processing render a convenient starting point for further advanced azobenzene-related research and 3D printing of macroscopic light-responsive structures.

Abstract
The synthetic approaches towards unique asparagusic acid and its analogues as well as its chemical use, the breadth of its biological properties and their relevant applications have been explored. The significance of the 1,2-dithiolane ring tension in dithiol-mediated uptake and its use for the intracellular transport of molecular cargoes is discussed alongside some of the challenges that arise from the fast thiolate-disulfide interchange. The short overview with the indication of the available literature on natural 1,2-dithiolanes synthesis and biological activities is also included. The general review structure is based on the time-line perspective of the application of asparagusic acid moiety as well as its primitive derivatives (4-amino-1,2-dithiolane-4-carboxylic acid and 4-methyl-1,2-dithiolane-4-carboxilic acid) used in clinics/cosmetics, focusing on the recent research in this area and including international patents applications.

Abstract
Light-induced transitions between the trans and cis isomer of triazatriangulenium-based azobenzene derivatives on Au(111) surfaces were observed directly by scanning tunneling microscopy, allowing atomic-scale studies of the photoisomerization kinetics. Although the azobenzene units in these adlayers are free-standing and spaced at uniform distances of 1.26 nm, their photoswitching depends on the isomeric state of the surrounding molecules and, specifically, is accelerated by neighboring cis isomers. These collective effects are supported by ab initio calculations indicating that the electronic excitation preferably localizes on the n-π* state of trans isomers with neighboring cis azobenzenes.

Vibrational sum-frequency generation study of molecular structure, sterical constraints and nonlinear optical switching contrast of mixed alkyl-azobenzene self-assembled monolayers. Z PHYS CHEM 2020. Abstract
Abstract
Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of azobenzene (AB) functionalized alkyl thiols on gold diluted with simple alkyl thiols provide a straightforward way to photochromic surfaces with high and tunable photoswitching efficiency. Trans-cis isomerization of the AB molecule changes the physical properties of the surface, including the nonlinear optical (NLO) response. Vibrational sum-frequency generation (VSFG) spectroscopy as a nonlinear type of laser spectroscopy offers surface- and orientation-sensitive insight into the molecular structure of mixed SAMs. In this study, VSFG as well as ultraviolet-visible (UV/Vis) spectroscopy has been employed to investigate the morphology, molecular structure, and NLO response of mixed SAMs with systematically varied surface composition. Methylazobenzene (MeAB) has been used as the molecular switch with the methyl substituent serving as orientational VSFG marker. Both short-chain and long-chain alkyl thiol co-ligands have been used to gain insight into the interplay between SAM structure and sterical constraints that are known to limit the free switching volume. Underlining the dominating role of sterical effects for controlling photochromic properties, a strong inhibition of the photoswitching efficiency and NLO response has been observed for the SAMs with an alkyl thiol co-ligand long enough to spatially extend into the layer of the MeAB chromophore. Overall, with <12% signal change, the relative NLO switching contrasts remained low in all cases. VSFG spectral trends clearly revealed that the presumably higher photoswitching efficiency upon dilution with the co-ligand is counteracted by a loss of structural order of the chromophore.

Abstract
Since glycoproteins have become increasingly recognized as key players in a wide variety of disease processes, there is an increasing need for advanced affinity materials for highly selective glycoprotein binding. Herein, for the first time, a surface-initiated controlled radical polymerization is integrated with supramolecular templating and molecular imprinting to yield highly reproducible synthetic recognition sites on surfaces with dissociation constants (K D) in the low micromolar range for target glycoproteins and minimal binding to nontarget glycoproteins. Importantly, it is shown that the synthetic strategy has a remarkable ability to distinguish the glycosylated and nonglycosylated forms of the same glycoprotein, with a >5-fold difference in binding affinity. The precise control over the polymer film thickness and positioning of multiple carbohydrate receptors plays a crucial role in achieving an enhanced affinity and selectivity. The generated functional materials of unprecedented glycoprotein recognition performance open up a wealth of opportunities in the biotechnological and biomedical fields.

Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline coordination polymers, assembled from inorganic nodes connected by organic linker molecules. An enormous surface area, huge compositional variety, regular structure, and favorable mechanical properties are among their outstanding properties. Monolithic MOF thin films, i.e., surface-mounted metal-organic frameworks (SURMOFs), with high degree of structural order and adjustable defect density, can be prepared on solid substrates using layer-by-layer techniques. Recent studies where SURMOFs served as model systems for quantitative studies of molecular interactions in porous media, including diffusion, are reviewed. Moreover, SURMOFs are ideally suited for the incorporation of photoactive molecules as well as to study electrical transport through crystalline molecular assemblies. Recent work has demonstrated that the realization of crystalline chromophore assemblies via the SURMOF approach allows the study of fundamental aspects of exciton transport, exciton channeling, and photon upconversion at internal interfaces in organic semiconductor materials. Due to their crystalline nature, MOF materials are well suited for quantitative comparisons with theoretical results; especially, since defect densities and types can be characterized and varied in a straightforward fashion. The active role of these nanoporous films in advanced applications, like for remote-controlled release of molecules, membranes with photoswitchable selectivity, and ion-conductors with adjustable conductivity, are also emphasized.

Abstract
Photoisomerization of a series of custom-designed, azobenzene-substituted alkanethiolate (AT) self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on Au(111) substrates was studied in the context of work function variation, using Kelvin probe measurements as a transduction technique. These SAMs featured variable packing density (by ∼14%; due to the odd-even effects) and, as an option, were additionally decorated with the electron donating/withdrawing -CH3 and -CF3 tail group, respectively, which induce additional dipole moments. The efficiency of photoisomerization and the respective extent of work function variation (ΔΦ) were found to be quite low and independent of the packing density in the SAMs, within the given odd-even packing density variation. They could only be increased, up to ca. 40 meV for ΔΦ, by mixing the azobenzene-substituted ATs with shorter "matrix" molecules, which were introduced for a partial release of the sterical constraints. The ΔΦ values for the SAMs decorated with the -CH3 and -CF3 tail groups were found to be lower than those for the monolayers without such a decoration, which correlated well with the theoretical estimates for the change of the dipole moment of the relevant molecules upon the photoisomerization.

Abstract
The development of stimuli-responsive interfaces between synthetic materials and biological systems is providing the unprecedented ability to modulate biomolecular interactions for a diverse range of biotechnological and biomedical applications. Antibody-antigen binding interactions are at the heart of many biosensing platforms, but no attempts have been made yet to control antibody-antigen binding in an on-demand fashion. Herein, a molecular surface was designed and developed that utilizes an electric potential to drive a conformational change in surface bound peptide moiety, to give on-demand control over antigen-antibody interactions on sensor chips. The molecularly engineered surfaces allow for propagation of conformational changes from the molecular switching unit to a distal progesterone antigen, resulting in promotion (ON state) or inhibition (OFF state) of progesterone antibody binding. The approach presented here can be generally applicable to other antigen-antibody systems and meets the technological needs for in situ long-term assessment of biological processes and disease monitoring on-demand.

Abstract
The ability to manipulate the structure and function of promising nanosystems via energy input and external stimuli is emerging as an attractive paradigm for developing reconfigurable and programmable nanomaterials and multifunctional devices. Light stimulus manifestly represents a preferred external physical and chemical tool for in situ remote command of the functional attributes of nanomaterials and nanosystems due to its unique advantages of high spatial and temporal resolution and digital controllability. Photochromic moieties are known to undergo reversible photochemical transformations between different states with distinct properties, which have been extensively introduced into various functional nanosystems such as nanomachines, nanoparticles, nanoelectronics, supramolecular nanoassemblies, and biological nanosystems. The integration of photochromism into these nanosystems has endowed the resultant nanostructures or advanced materials with intriguing photoresponsive behaviors and more sophisticated functions. In this Review, we provide an account of the recent advancements in reversible photocontrol of the structures and functions of photochromic nanosystems and their applications. The important design concepts of such truly advanced materials are discussed, their fabrication methods are emphasized, and their applications are highlighted. The Review is concluded by briefly outlining the challenges that need to be addressed and the opportunities that can be tapped into. We hope that the review of the flourishing and vibrant topic with myriad possibilities would shine light on exploring the future nanoworld by encouraging and opening the windows to meaningful multidisciplinary cooperation of engineers from different backgrounds and scientists from the fields such as chemistry, physics, engineering, biology, nanotechnology and materials science.

Abstract
In a first-principles study based on many-body perturbation theory, we analyze the optical excitations of azobenzene-functionalized self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) with increasing packing density and different terminations, considering for comparison the corresponding gas-phase molecules and dimers. Intermolecular coupling increases with the density of the chromophores independently of the functional groups. The intense [Formula: see text] resonance that triggers photo-isomerization is present in the spectra of isolated dimers and diluted SAMs, but it is almost completely washed out in tightly packed architectures. Intermolecular coupling is partially inhibited by mixing differently functionalized azobenzene derivatives, in particular when large groups are involved. In this way, the excitation band inducing the photo-isomerization process is partially preserved and the effects of dense packing partly counterbalanced. Our results suggest that a tailored design of azobenzene-functionalized SAMs which optimizes the interplay between the packing density of the chromophores and their termination can lead to significant improvements in the photo-switching efficiency of these systems.

Abstract
A closed-cycle system for light-harvesting, storage, and heat release is important for utilizing and managing renewable energy. However, combining a high-energy, stable photochromic material with a controllable trigger for solid-state heat release remains a great challenge for developing photothermal fuels (PTFs). This paper presents a uniform PTF film fabricated by the assembly of close-packed bisazobenzene (bisAzo) grafted onto reduced graphene oxide (rGO). The assembled rGO-bisAzo template exhibited a high energy density of 131 Wh kg-1 and a long half-life of 37 days owing to inter- or intramolecular H-bonding and steric hindrance. The rGO-bisAzo PTF film released and accumulated heat to realize a maximum temperature difference (DT) of 15 °C and a DT of over 10 °C for 30 min when the temperature difference of the environment was greater than100 °C. Controlling heat release in the solid-state assembly paves the way to develop highly efficient and high-energy PTFs for a multitude of applications.

Abstract
In this study, we synthesized an Azo-py phosphoramidite, featuring azobenzene and pyrene units, as a novel fluorescent and isomeric (trans- and cis-azobenzene units) material, which we incorporated in an i-motif DNA sequence. We then monitored the structural dynamics and changes in fluorescence as the modified DNA sequences transformed from single strands at pH 7 to i-motif quadruplex structures at pH 3. After incorporating Azo-py into the 4A loop position of an i-motif sequence, dramatic changes in fluorescence occurred as the DNA structures changed from single-strands to i-motif quadruplex structures. Interestingly, the cis form of Azo-py induced a more stable i-motif structure than did the trans form, as confirmed from circular dichroism spectra and melting temperature data. The absorption and fluorescence signals of these Azo-py-incorporated i-motif systems exhibited switchable and highly correlated signaling patterns. Such isomeric structures based on Azo-py might find potential applications in biology, where control over stable i-motif quadruplex structures might be performed with switchable fluorescence signaling.

Abstract
We present surface hopping simulations of the photodynamics of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of 4'-(biphenyl-4-ylazo)-biphenyl-4-thiol (ABPT) on Au(111). We show that trans → cis photoisomerization is suppressed because of steric hindrance in a well-ordered SAM. Photoisomerization is instead viable in the presence of defects. Two particularly important defects are the boundaries between domains of trans-ABPT molecules leaning in different directions (a line defect) and single cis molecules embedded in a SAM of trans (a point defect). Our findings explain the cooperative behavior observed during the photoisomerization of a trans-ABPT SAM, leading to large domains of pure cis and trans isomers. The line and point defects are predicted to produce different patterns of cis-ABPT molecules during the early stages of the photoconversion.

Abstract
We investigate fundamental aspects of structure formation in molecular self-assembly, by examining the emergence of order upon adsorption of a series of model molecules. It is known that strongly polar diatomic molecules form three-dimensional crystals in the absence of a substrate. This tendency can be disrupted upon assembly on a solid surface, and various other types of order may arise. Depending on the relative strength of the interactions, disordered phases, two-dimensional crystals commensurate to the surface, and unmodified crystals were observed upon adsorption of simple dipoles in the present work. Introduction of steric features, in the form of a longer backbone or substituents external to the polar pair, led to even richer phase diagrams. The formation of two-dimensional phases with nematic (parallel) or antiparallel alignment was accomplished by altering the polarity of the end groups on needle-like molecules, whereas embedded charged groups made two-dimensional structure unstable for even very long molecules. These molecules preferred to align in long, often desorbed, molecular wires. The wealth of phases observed here parallel the results of experimental systematic or incidental studies of the relationships between molecular interactions and self-assembled patterns, and provide some insight into the molecular handles that self-assembly researchers can wield to guide the process towards a desired structural outcome.

Abstract
Herein, electrically switchable mixed self-assembled monolayers based on oligopeptides have been developed and investigated for their suitability in achieving control over biomolecular interactions in the presence of complex biological conditions. Our model system, a biotinylated oligopeptide tethered to gold within a background of tri(ethylene glycol) undecanethiol, is ubiquitous in both switching specific protein interactions in highly fouling media while still offering the non-specific protein-resistance to the surface. Furthermore, the work demonstrated that the performance of the switching on the electro-switchable oligopeptide is sensitive to the characteristics of the media, and in particular, its protein concentration and buffer composition, and thus such aspects should be considered and addressed to assure maximum switching performance. This study lays the foundation for developing more realistic dynamic extracellular matrix models and is certainly applicable in a wide variety of biological and medical applications.

Abstract
Recently, single-walled carbon nanotubes as well as graphene functionalized with azobenzene chromophores have drawn attention for applications in optoelectronics due to their ability to undergo cis-trans isomerization when exposed to light. The electronic properties of the nanocarbon materials at these unconventional interfaces can be tailored by gaining structural insight into the organic monolayers at the molecular level. In this work, we use polarization-dependent X-ray absorption spectroscopy to probe the orientation of three chromophores on graphene, all identical except for their terminal groups. All three terminal groups (methyl, nitro, and nitrile) are well-oriented, with a tilt angle of about 30° from the substrate for the shared azobenzene group. Density functional theory calculations are in good agreement with experimental results and give two similar, stable configurations for the orientation of these molecules on graphene.

Abstract
Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) containing azobenzene moieties are very attractive for a wide range of applications, including molecular electronics and photonics, bio-interface engineering and sensoring. However, very little is known about the aggregation and photoswitching behavior that azobenzene units undergo during the SAM formation process. Here, we demonstrate that the formation of thiol-based SAMs containing azobenzenes (denoted as AzoSH) on gold surfaces is characterised by a two-step adsorption kinetics, while a three-step assembly process has been identified for dithiolane-based SAMs containing azobenzenes (denoted AzoSS). The H-aggregation on the AzoSS SAMs was found to be remarkably dependent on the time of self-assembly, with less aggregation as a function of time. While photoisomerization of the AzoSH was suppressed for all different assembly times, the reversible trans-cis photoisomerization of AzoSS SAMs formed over 24 hours was clearly observed upon alternating UV and Vis light irradiation. We contend that detailed information on formation kinetics and related optical properties is of crucial importance for elucidating the photoswitching capabilities of azobenzene-based SAMs.

Abstract
The zwitterionic dithiocarboxylates 1(+)-CS(2)(-)-4(+)-CS(2)(-) were prepared by reacting the corresponding N-heterocyclic carbenes 1,3-bis(2,6-diisoproylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene (1), 1,3-diisopropylimidazol-2-ylidene (2), 1,3-dibenzylimidazol-2-ylidene (3) and 1,3-diethylbenzimidazol-2-ylidene (4) with CS(2). In the latter two cases, the corresponding N-heterocylic carbene was generated in situ. Compounds 2(+)-CS(2)(-)-4(+)-CS(2)(-) were structurally characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The chemisorption of these zwitterionic dithiocarboxylates on solid gold substrates was investigated in situ and in real time by optical second harmonic generation (SHG). The resulting thin films were exemplarily characterised by near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) in the case of 1(+)-CS(2)(-) and 2(+)-CS(2)(-), revealing the formation of almost contamination-free self-assembled monolayers, which exhibit a remarkable degree of orientational order.

Abstract
We report the synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of nanohybrid structures consisting of an azobenzene compound grafted on the surface of zinc oxide nanoparticles. Characteristic bathochromic shifts indicate that the azobenzene photochromic molecules self-assemble onto the surface of the nanocrystals. The extent of packing is dependent on the shape of the nanoparticle. ZnO nanorods, with flat facets, enable a tighter organization of the molecules in the self-assembled monolayer than in the case of nanodots that display a more curvated shape. Consistently, the efficiency of photochromic switching of the self-assembled monolayer on ZnO nanoparticles is also shown to be strongly affected by nanoparticle shape.

Abstract
Novel composite asymmetrical membranes based on poly(vinyl alcohol)-co-ethylene (EVAL) as the host material and new polyethers that contain azobenzene moieties in the side chain were prepared by dry-cast phase inversion after dissolving the azo polymers in tetrahydrofuran and EVAL in dimethylsulfoxide and subsequently mixing the resulting solutions. By taking advantage of the proper temperature variation in the oven used for solvent evaporation, asymmetrical membranes that exhibited a dense, crystalline layer on the bottom and a porous, mainly amorphous layer on the top were obtained. Remarkable changes in the surface morphology and the contact angle with water were observed on the top surfaces of the composite membranes. This was ascribed not only to the enhanced concentration of azo polymer on the top surface but mostly to a conformational change in EVAL induced by the photoisomerization of the guest azo groups, as shown by HRMAS (1)H NMR. The morphological and structural changes in EVAL could be reversed on exposing the membrane to visible light for 24 h.

Abstract
Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) can decorate surfaces with `smart´ functional units possessing reversible stimulus-response behavior for optical, thermal, magnetic or redox-chemical stimuli. An independent performance of individual functional groups in such a film is desirable, which can be, in particular, ensured by fairly large lateral separations between tailgroups in the SAM. Adsorbate molecules with multiple attachment points are very promising in this context owing to their large surface footprint, which covers a surface area exceeding the lateral dimensions of the functional groups. To address these design constraints, novel tridentate long-chain tripodal thioether ligands with central adamantine units and a redox-active ferrocenyl tailgroup, 1-[4-(ferrocenylethynyl)phenyl]-3,5,7-tri[(4-n-octylsulfanyl)phenyl]adamantine (T8) and 1-[4-(ferrocenylethynyl)phenyl]-3,5,7-tri[(4-n-dodecylsulfanyl)phenyl]adamantine (T12), were synthesized and used as tripodal adsorbate molecules for the fabrication of redox-active ferrocenyl-terminated SAMs on Au(111). These SAMs were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, near edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy and sum frequency generation spectroscopy. The data suggest that T8 and T12 form almost contamination-free, well-aligned and fairly densely-packed SAMs on Au(111) with laterally separated ferrocenyl units. The SAMs show a homogeneous binding chemistry, an important requirement for high fidelity SAMs. SFG results indicate lateral interactions between neighboring molecules via the long-chain binding units.

Abstract
The photoisomerization of self-assembled monolayers of azobenzene-containing alkanethiols, as well as of mixed monolayers of these substances with n-alkanethiol spacer molecules on Au surfaces, was studied by photoelectrochemical measurements and surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy. A strong dependence on the molecular structure of the adsorbates was found, specifically on the linker between the azobenzene moiety and the alkanethiol: while molecules with an amide group were photoinactive, those with an ether group exhibited pronounced, reversible photoisomerization in pure and mixed adlayers. Both trans-cis and cis-trans isomerization followed first-order kinetics with time constants that suggest high quantum efficiencies for these processes.

Abstract
The formation of compact and large-scale self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) adsorbed on a mica surface has been achieved by insertion of alkyl chains on azobenzene derivatives, leading to strong intermolecular van der Waals interactions and hydrogen bonding. The reversible photoswitching of monolayers was investigated by monitoring the variation of the thickness of the SAMs during the cis-trans isomerization of the azobenzene cores with an atomic force microscope (AFM). The absence of covalent bonds between molecules and substrate induces a molecular diffusion which leads to the complete isomerization of the molecules constituting the SAMs.

Abstract
A series of azobenzenealkanethiol compounds with the structure p-RC6H4N=NC6H4(CH2)nSH (n = 3, 4) was synthesized using a divergent strategy with the two anilines H2NC6H4(CH2)nSAc as central compounds. This strategy provides fast access to a broad variety of the respective azobenzenethiols without (note!) an oxygen atom in the alkyl chain, thus permitting the self-assembly of these compounds onto gold in a predictable conformation, also taking advantage of the previously found odd–even effect in aromatic–aliphatic hybrid systems. Initial experiments indicate that all of these molecules indeed form dense monolayers, in which the orientation of the azobenzene unit is determined by the number of methylene groups in the aliphatic part of the molecules.

Abstract
Well-defined and homogeneous, contamination-free self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) were fabricated by the chemisorption of lip-NH-p-C6H4-N=N-p-C6H4-COOH (lip = α-lipoyl) onto gold. This adsorbate species is composed of a 1,2-dithiolane-based headgroup, an azobenzene-based (and hence photochromic) spacer unit and a carboxylic acid functional group. The SAM constituents are covalently attached to the substrate by the bidentate thiolate anchor groups and exhibit a strongly tilted binding configuration.

Abstract
Whereas thiols and thioethers are frequently used as binding units of oligodentate precursor molecules to fabricate self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on coinage metal and semiconductor surfaces, their use for tridentate bonding configuration is still questionable. Against this background, novel tridentate thiol ligands, PhSi(CH(2)SH)(3) (PTT) and p-Ph-C(6)H(4)Si(CH(2)SH)(3) (BPTT), were synthesized and used as tripodal adsorbate molecules for the fabrication of SAMs on Au(111). These SAMs were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. The PTT and BPTT films were compared with the analogous systems comprised of same tripodal ligands with thioether instead of thiol binding units (anchors). XPS and NEXAFS data suggest that the binding uniformity, packing density, and molecular alignment of the thiol-based ligands in the respective SAMs is superior to their thioether counterparts. In addition, the thiol-based films showed significantly lower levels of contamination. Significantly, the quality of the PTT SAMs on Au(111) was found to be even higher than that of the films formed from the respective monodentate counterpart, benzenethiol. The results obtained allow for making some general conclusions on the specific character of molecular self-assembly in the case of tridentate ligands.
