Ordering of Block Copolymer Micelles in Confined Two-Dimensional Solutions

Size evolution of highly amphiphilic macromolecular solution assemblies via a distinct bimodal pathway

The solution self-assembly of macromolecular amphiphiles offers an efficient, bottom-up strategy for producing well-defined nanocarriers, with applications ranging from drug delivery to nanoreactors. Typically, the generation of uniform nanocarrier architectures is controlled by processing methods that rely on cosolvent mixtures. These preparation strategies hinge on the assumption that macromolecular solution nanostructures are kinetically stable following transfer from an organic/aqueous cosolvent into aqueous solution. Herein we demonstrate that unequivocal step-change shifts in micelle populations occur over several weeks following transfer into a highly selective solvent. The unexpected micelle growth evolves through a distinct bimodal distribution separated by multiple fusion events and critically depends on solution agitation. Notably, these results underscore fundamental similarities between assembly processes in amphiphilic polymer, small molecule and protein systems. Moreover, the non-equilibrium micelle size increase can have a major impact on the assumed stability of solution assemblies, for which performance is dictated by nanocarrier size and structure.

Three-dimensional confinement-related size changes to mixed-surfactant vesicles

The effect of three-dimensional confinement on the size and morphology of a vesicular surfactant mesophase obtained by mixing micellar solutions of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid has been studied using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). The confined spaces were generated by the random close packing of polystyrene beads of radius Rb=1.5, 0.25, and 0.1 microm, creating voids of characteristic dimensions R approximately 0.22 Rb=3300, 550, and 220 A, respectively. These void length scales were comparable to or less than the radii of vesicles formed in the system under conditions of no confinement. Vesicles, made by mixing 0.8 wt % micellar solutions of surfactant in a water/D2O mixture that is contrast-matched with the polystyrene beads, were added in a SANS scattering cell without beads, as well as three cells with the different sized beads. The SANS data from the sample without confinement was best fitted by a core-shell model and not by spheres or disks, confirming the presence of vesicles. The data from samples in the confined domains also showed vesicles as the dominant structure. The most important result is that the mean size of these vesicles decreases as the confinement length scale is reduced. A simple thermodynamic model accounting for the balance between increased enthalpy when vesicles with curvature higher than the preferred one are formed, and increased free volume entropy for smaller vesicles supports the experimental data. While these results are focused on a specific vesicle system, the broad principles behind changes in microstructure produced by confinement are applicable to other surfactant aggregates. The results of this study are potentially important for understanding the flow of drug delivery vehicles through microcapillaries, in the recovery of oil from fine pores in rocks using surfactant containing fluids, micellar enhanced ultrafiltration, or in other situations where the size of surfactant aggregate structures approach the length scales between confining walls.

Simulation study of charged nanoparticles confined in a rectangular tube with discrete wall charges

The development of novel nanomaterials has been a subject of intense interest in recent years. An interesting structure among these materials is the so-called "pea pods" (i.e., nanoparticles confined in nanotubes). To facilitate the development and commercialization of these materials, it is important that we have an in-depth understanding of their behavior. The study of confined charged particles is particularly challenging because of the long-ranged nature of electrostatic interaction, and both interparticle and particle-confinement interactions are likely to play a role in determining the system behavior. The primary objective of this study is to develop a better understanding of the behavior of charged nanoparticles in a charged tubular confinement using Monte Carlo simulation, with particular focus on the effect of electrostatic interactions on the structure of the particles. Simulation results have shown that (i) the structuring of confined particles is associated with the asymmetry of the long-ranged interaction and (ii) factors such as confinement geometry and particle charge and size asymmetry can be manipulated to produce different particle structures. The present study represents the first step in an attempt to gain further insight into the behavior of confined nanosystems, with the ultimate objective of exploiting these characteristics, particularly the interactions between the confined particles and their external environment, in developing novel nanomaterials.

A simulation study of electrostatic effects on mixed ionic micelles confined between two parallel charged plates

Confined colloidal systems have been the subject of extensive theoretical and experimental research, and the recent observation of long-range like-charge attraction in such systems has only highlighted their peculiar behavior. On the other hand, surfactant solutions are often used in small confined space, yet their behavior in confinement has received relatively little attention. A distinct feature of confined self-assembling systems is that the aggregates are capable of adjusting their composition, size, and shape in response to their external environment, which may lead to very different phase characteristics compared to bulk solutions. The primary objective of this study is to explore the effects of varying micelle composition on the structural behavior of a confined mixed ionic micellar solution. Mesoscale canonical Monte Carlo simulations were used to probe the structure of the confined solution, while a molecular-thermodynamic model was used to systematically account for the change in micelle size as we varied its composition. Significant micelle ordering was found under certain conditions, which implies that large deviations from the minimum-energy micelle configuration may not be entropically favorable. Accumulation of micelles along the midplane was observed when the confining walls are weakly charged, suggesting that micelle shape transformation should be considered in more detail. On the other hand, with high wall charge density, apparent attraction was found between like-charged micelles and wall. These findings point to the need for a more quantitative theoretical treatment in describing surfactant self-assembly in confined geometries.

Redistribution of Block Copolymer Chains between Mixed Micelles in Solution

The evolution of polymolecular micelles formed by two different poly(2-vinylpyridine)-polystyrene (PVP-PS) block copolymers dissolved in toluene is studied by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The two PVP-PS diblock copolymers differ in composition, namely in the length of PVP block. Upon dissolution, a rapid formation of mixed polymolecular micelles takes place. As a result, the micellar size distribution observed is rather broad already at this initial stage. Due to the presence of two different diblock copolymers, the process of micellar growth involves not only the fusion of micelles but also the chain exchange between polymolecular micelles of different composition, which may slow the equilibration process. After a considerable aging time, the block copolymers seem to reach the equilibrium state, and an almost perfect bimodal size distribution is observed. According to the theoretical analysis given, both "pure" and "mixed" micelles constitute the micellar size distribution.
