Direct photolysis mechanism of pesticides in water

Photodegradation is one of the most important abiotic transformations for pesticides in the aquatic environment, and the high energy of sunlight causes characteristic reactions such as bond scission, cyclization, and rearrangement, which are scarcely observed in hydrolysis and microbial degradation. This review deals with direct photolysis via excitation of a pesticide by absorbing natural or artificial sunlight in order to know its basic photochemistry, and indirect photolysis meaning either sensitization by dissolved organic matters or oxidation by reactive oxygen species is basically excluded. Several experimental approaches including spectroscopic techniques together with theoretical calculations are first discussed from the viewpoint of the reaction mechanisms in direct photolysis. Then, the typical photoreactions of pesticides are summarized by chemical classes and/or functional groups and discussed as far as possible in relation to their mechanisms.

Monohydroxylated Poly(3-hydroxyoctanoate) Oligomers and Its Functionalized Derivatives Used as Macroinitiators in the Synthesis of Degradable Diblock Copolyesters

The presence of a hydroxyl group at the end of poly(3-hydroxyoctanoate) oligomers, noted PHO oligomers, is required to prepare diblock copolymers with improved properties by ring-opening polymerization of cyclic monomer as epsilon-caprolactone. Several chemical methods such as basic hydrolysis, acid-catalyzed reaction with APTS, and methanolysis were used to prepare well-defined low molar masses PHO oligomers. The methanolysis reaction was allowed to proceed for 10-60 min to produce PHO oligomers with Mn values ranging from 20,000 to 800 g mol-1 with low polydispersity index. Detailed analysis of the MALDI-TOF mass spectra of the obtained oligomers has revealed the presence of linear structures bearing methyl ester on one side and hydroxyl end group on the other side. The same procedure was applied to poly(3-hydroxyoctanoate-co-3-hydroxyundecenoate), PHOU, a poly(3-hydroxyalkanoate) containing unsaturated units in its side chains. These oligomers were further used to initiate the polymerization of epsilon-caprolactone by varying the PHO (or PHOU) and PCL lengths. By copolymerization with epsilon-caprolactone, the properties of PHO or PHOU have been improved. The crystallinity of the obtained copolymers was modified by controlling the length of the two different blocks. The unsaturations in the side chains of the PHOU block were oxidized in acid carboxylic functions to obtain a novel artificial biopolyester. Moreover, degradation was followed to study the influence of carboxylic groups on the hydrolysis of the copolymers.

Comonomer unit composition and thermal properties of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate)s biosynthesized by Ralstonia eutropha

A series of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate)s [P(3HB-co-4HB)s] with different 4HB content, biosynthesized by Ralstonia eutropha H16 with mixed carbon sources of 4-hydroxybutyric acid (4HBA) and butyric acid, were fractionated by solvent/nonsolvent fractionation into copolyester fractions with different 4HB content and narrower compositional distribution. The fractions obtained were classified into two groups, 3HB- and 4HB-rich P(3HB-co-4HB)s. The thermal properties were investigated for these fractionated copolyesters. With increasing 4HB content, the melting temperature at first decreased while 3HB content was rich, and then increased while 4HB content was rich. The glass transition temperature decreased linearly with increasing 4HB content. The 4HB-rich P(3HB-co-4HB) was found to be immiscible with the 3HB-rich P(3HB-co-4HB), as two glass transitions corresponding to those of respective P(3HB-co-4HB)s were observed by DSC. It was concluded that as-produced bacterial P(3HB-co-4HB) samples used in this study should be considered as immiscible polymer blends.

Biosynthesis and local sequence specific degradation of poly(3-hydroxyvalerate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate) in Hydrogenophaga pseudoflava

A novel copolymer that consisted of 3-hydroxyvalerate and 4-hydroxybutyrate, P(3HV-co-4HB), was synthesized in Hydrogenophaga pseudoflava by growing it in media containing gamma-valerolactone and gamma-butyrolactone as a carbon source. The monomer ratio in the copolymer was changed by altering the feed ratio of the two lactones. The cultivation technique was composed of three steps: the first-step for high cell production in Luria-Bertani medium, the second-step for intracellular degrading removal of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (P(3HB)), which was formed in the first step, by culturing the cells in carbon-source-free medium, and the final step for accumulation of P(3HV-co-4HB) in a mixed lactone medium. All the P(3HV-co-4HB) copolymers contained less than 1 mol % of 3HB unit. These copolymers were characterized by NMR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, and first-order kinetic analysis of intracellular degradation. The copolymer with an approximately equal ratio of the comonomers was found amorphous. The NMR microstructural analysis showed that the copolymers contained appreciable amounts of 3HV-rich or 4HB-rich chains. The (13)C NMR splitting patterns associated with the four carbons in the 4HB unit of P(3HV-co-4HB) bear close resemblance to those observed in the 4HB unit of P(3HB-co-4HB). The signals arising from the carbons in the 3HV unit of P(3HV-co-4HB) split in a manner similar to those in the 3HB unit of P(3HB-co-4HB). Thus the sequences were assigned by comparing the NMR splittings for P(3HV-co-4HB) with those for P(3HB-co-4HB) and P(3HB-co-3HV). The sequence assignment was further checked by comparing the signal intensities before and after degradation of the copolymers. This was considered reasonable because the H. pseudoflava intracellular PHA depolymerase is more specific to the 3HV unit than to the 4HB unit, which was also confirmed by the higher degradation rate constant for the 3HV unit in the first-order kinetic analysis.
