Growth of Polystyrene Domains in Isotropic, Nematic and Smectic Phase of 8CB Liquid Crystal

Nematic-to-Isotropic Phase Transition in Poly(L-Lactide) with Addition of Cyclodextrin during Abiotic Degradation Study

Poly(L-lactide) is capable of self-assembly into a nematic mesophase under the influence of temperature and mechanical stresses. Therefore, subsequent poly(L-lactide) films were obtained and characterized, showing nematic liquid crystal properties both before and after degradation. Herein, we present that, by introducing β-cyclodextrin into the polymer matrix, it is possible to obtain a chiral nematic mesophase during pressing, regardless of temperature and time. The obtained poly(L-lactide) films exhibiting liquid crystal properties were subjected to degradation tests and the influence of degradation on these properties was determined. Thermotropic phase behavior was investigated using polarized optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and differential scanning calorimetry. The degradation process demonstrated an influence on the liquid crystal properties of pressed polymer films. The colored planar texture of the chiral nematic mesophase, which was not observed prior to degradation in films without the addition of β-cyclodextrin, appeared after incubation in water as a result of the entrapment of degradation products in the polymer matrix. These unusual tailor-made properties, obtained in liquid crystals in (bio)degradable polymers using a simple method, demonstrate the potential for advanced photonic applications.

Nonisothermal model for the direct isotropic/smectic-A liquid-crystalline transition

An extension to a high-order model for the direct isotropic/smectic-A liquid-crystalline phase transition was derived to take into account thermal effects including anisotropic thermal diffusion and latent heat of phase ordering. Multiscale multitransport simulations of the nonisothermal model were compared to isothermal simulation, showing that the presented model extension corrects the standard Landau-de Gennes prediction from constant growth to diffusion-limited growth under shallow quench/undercooling conditions. Nonisothermal simulations, where metastable nematic preordering precedes smectic-A growth, were also conducted, and novel nonmonotonic phase-transformation kinetics were observed.

Phase Separation in Binary Polymer/Liquid Crystal Mixtures: Network Breaking and Domain Growth by Coalescence-induced Coalescence

A small-angle light scattering (SALS) technique together with optical microscopy observation are used to investigate phase separation kinetics in films of low molecular weight thermotropic liquid crystal (4-cyano-4'-n-octyl-biphenyl, 8CB) with flexible polymer (polystyrene, PS). The growth of domains is studied as a function of time, film thickness, and film composition. The light scattering results are correlated with the images obtained by optical microscopy observation. In this paper, we study the breaking of a bicontinuous network of polymer in liquid crystal into droplets and their further growth via the coalescence-induced coalescence mechanism. The appearance of droplets in the system leads to a strong scattering at small wave vectors, while the bicontinuous network gives a peak at a nonzero wave vector. Superposition of these scattering intensities leads to the appearance of a second peak in the full scattering intensity signal, when the bicontinuous network starts to break up into disjointed elongated domains. Finally, both peaks merge into a single peak, which moves quickly toward zero wave vectors, indicating a complete transformation of elongated domains into spherical droplets of variable size. We found that the separation process does not depend on the size of the system. Irrespective of the sample thickness, the network breaks into fragments always at the same time after temperature quench. On the basis of morphological analysis, we found that the average size of the droplets which formed from the network grows with time, t, as t(alpha), alpha = 0.9 +/- 0.1, in the isotropic phase and in the nematic phase.

Computational modelling of multiscale morphologies in polymer-liquid crystal blends

Simulations of material architectures in polymer-liquid crystal blends driven by phase separation-phase ordering-texturing processes are presented. The study shows that mixtures of polymers and liquid crystals result in blend morphologies that organize at several scales. For thermally driven instabilities, morphologies of polymer droplets embedded in a liquid crystal matrix show colloidal crystallinity. Large polymer drops strongly affect the orientation of the matrix, producing textures consisting of defect lattices. This work shows that thermally driven phase separation-phase ordering-texturing processes can result in multiscale materials, with length scales cascading down from droplets to interfaces, and finally to nanoscale defects.

Texture formation under phase ordering and phase separation in polymer-liquid crystal mixtures

Computational modeling of texture formation in coupled phase separation-phase ordering processes in polymer/liquid crystal mixtures is performed using a unified model based on the nematic tensor order parameter and gradient orientation elasticity. The computational methods are able to resolve defect nucleation, defect-defect interactions, and defect-particle interactions, as well as global and local morphological features in the concentration and order parameter spatiotemporal behavior. Biphasic structures corresponding to polymer dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs), crystalline filled nematic (CFNs), and random filled nematics (RFNs) are captured and analyzed using liquid crystal defect physics and structure factors. Under spinodal decomposition due to concentration fluctuations, the PDLC structure emerges, and the nucleation and repulsive interaction of defects within nematic droplets leads to bipolar nematic droplets. Under spinodal decomposition due to ordering fluctuations, the CFNs structure emerges, and the stable polymer droplet crystal is pinned by a lattice of topological defects. For intermediate cases, where the mixture is unstable to both concentration and nematic order fluctuations, the RFN structure emerges, and polymer droplets and fibrils are pinned by a defect network, whose density increases with the curvature of the polymer-liquid crystal interface. The simulations provide an information of the role of topological defects on phase separation-phase ordering processes in polymer-liquid crystal mixtures.

Relaxation processes in mixtures of liquid crystals and polymers near phase boundaries and during phase separation

We present experimental studies of the relaxation of concentration fluctuations in a semidilute solution of polystyrene (PS) (30% by weight) in 4-cyano-4'-n-octyl-biphenyl (8CB) (70% by weight) using the photon correlation spectroscopy (PCS). In the homogeneous phase there are two modes of relaxation. The slow one (typical time scale is taus = 0.001 s) is due to the diffusion of polymer chains (of molecular mass 65,000) in the LC matrix (of molecular mass 290), while the fast one has the time scale of the order of tauf approximately 0.00001 s. The amplitude of the fast mode is much weaker than the one for the slow mode. Moreover it does not depend on the scattering wave vector, q. The value of the diffusion coefficient, Dc = 1/(tausq2) for the slow mode decreases with temperature according to the Arhenius law until we reach the coexistence curve. Its value close to the coexistence is Dc = 4 x 10(5) nm2/s and the activation energy in the homogeneous mixture is Ec=127 kJ/mol. If we gradually undercool the mixture below the coexistence into the metastable two-phase region without inducing the phase separation we find unexpectedly that Dc does not change with temperature even 4 degrees below the coexistence curve. The characteristic time of the fast mode does not depend on the scattering wave vector indicating that it is related to the transient gel structure. We have shown that it is possible to measure the short time relaxation of concentration fluctuations during the phase separation in the mixture. At low temperature close to the isotropic-nematic phase transition we have observed that the relaxation is well separated in time from the typical time of the domain growth. This relaxation mode is characterized by the large diffusion coefficient D = 2 x 10(8) nm2/s. The mode probably comes from the coupling between the orientational dynamics of liquid crystals and the transient gel structure of polymers.
