Abstract
Morphology, macro-, and micromechanical properties of novel poly(urethane-urea)/silica nanocomposites were analyzed by electron microscopy, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, and microindentation. The studied nanocomposites were based on a poly(urethane-urea) (PUU) matrix filled by nanosilica, and were prepared from waterborne dispersions of PUU (latex) and SiO2. The loading of nano-SiO2 was varied between 0 (neat matrix) and 40 wt% in the dry nanocomposite. The prepared materials were all formally in the rubbery state at room temperature, but they displayed complex elastoviscoplastic behavior, spanning from stiffer elastomeric type to semi-glassy. Because of the employed rigid and highly uniform spherical nanofiller, the materials are of great interest for model microindentation studies. Additionally, because of the polycarbonate-type elastic chains of the PUU matrix, hydrogen bonding in the studied nanocomposites was expected to be rich and diverse, ranging from very strong to weak. In micro- and macromechanical tests, all the elasticity-related properties correlated very strongly. The relations among the properties that related to energy dissipation were complex, and were highly affected by the existence of hydrogen bonding of broadly varied strength, by the distribution patterns of the fine nanofiller, as well as by the eventual locally endured larger deformations during the tests, and the tendency of the materials to cold flow.

Abstract
Novel thermoplastic polyamide elastomers (TPAEs) consisting of long-chain semicrystalline polyamide 1212 (PA1212) and amorphous polyetheramine were synthesized via one-pot melt polycondensation. The method provides accessible routes to prepare TPAEs with a high tolerance of compatibility between polyamide and polyether oligomers compared with the traditional two-step method. These TPAEs with 10 wt % to 76 wt % of soft content were obtained by reaction of dodecanedioic acid, 1,12-dodecanediamine, and poly(propylene glycol) (PPG) diamine. The structure–property relationships of TPAEs were systematically studied. The chemical structure and the morphologic analyses have revealed that microphase separation occurs in the amorphous region. The TPAEs that have long-chain PPG segments consist of a crystalline polyamide domain, amorphous polyamide-rich domain, and amorphous polyetheramine-rich domain, while the ones containing short-chain PPG segments comprise of a crystalline polyamide domain and miscible amorphous polyamide phase and amorphous polyetheramine phase due to the compatibility between short-chain polyetheramine and amorphous polyamide. These novel TPAEs show good damping performance at low temperature, especially the TPAEs that incorporated 76 wt % and 62 wt % of PPG diamine. The TPAEs exhibit high elastic properties and low residual strain at room temperature. They are lightweight with density between 1.01 and 1.03 g/cm3. The long-chain TPAEs have well-balanced properties of low density, high elastic return, and high shock-absorbing ability. This work provides a route to expand TPAEs to damping materials with special application for sports equipment used in extremely cold conditions such as ski boots.

Abstract
Rheological and viscoelastic properties of physically crosslinked low-temperature elastomers were studied. The supramolecularly assembling copolymers consist of linear polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) elastic chains terminated on both ends with mesogenic building blocks (LC) of azobenzene type. They are generally and also structurally highly different from the well-studied LC polymer networks or LC elastomers: The LC units make up only a small volume fraction in our materials and act as fairly efficient physical crosslinkers with thermotropic properties. The aggregation (nano-phase separation) of the relatively rare, small and spatially separated terminal LC units generates temperature-switched viscoelasticity in the molten copolymers. Their rheological behavior was found to be controlled by an interplay of nano-phase separation of the LC units (growth and splitting of their aggregates) and of the thermotropic transitions in these aggregates (which change their stiffness). As a consequence, multiple gel points (up to three) are observed in temperature scans of the copolymers. The physical crosslinks also can be reversibly disconnected by large mechanical strain in the 'warm' rubbery state, as well as in melt (thixotropy). The kinetics of crosslink formation was found to be fast if induced by temperature and extremely fast in case of internal self-healing after strain damage. Thixotropic loop tests hence display only very small hysteresis in the LC-melt-state, although the melts show very distinct shear thinning. Our study evaluates structure-property relationships in three homologous systems with elastic PDMS segments of different length (8.6, 16.3 and 64.4 repeat units). The studied copolymers might be of interest as passive smart materials, especially as temperature-controlled elastic/viscoelastic mechanical coupling.

Abstract
Physically crosslinked low-temperature elastomers were prepared based on linear polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) elastic chains terminated on both ends with mesogenic building blocks (LC) of azobenzene type. They are generally (and also structurally) highly different from the well-studied LC polymer networks (light-sensitive actuators). The LC units also make up only a small volume fraction in our materials and they do not generate elastic energy upon irradiation, but they act as physical crosslinkers with thermotropic properties. Our elastomers lack permanent chemical crosslinks—their structure is fully linear. The aggregation of the relatively rare, small, and spatially separated terminal LC units nevertheless proved to be a considerably strong crosslinking mechanism. The most attractive product displays a rubber plateau extending over 100 °C, melts near 8 °C, and is soluble in organic solvents. The self-assembly (via LC aggregation) of the copolymer molecules leads to a distinctly lamellar structure indicated by X-ray diffraction (XRD). This structure persists also in melt (polarized light microscopy, XRD), where 1–2 thermotropic transitions occur. The interesting effects of the properties of this lamellar structure on viscoelastic and rheological properties in the rubbery and in the melt state are discussed in a follow-up paper (“Part II”). The copolymers might be of interest as passive smart materials, especially as temperature-controlled elastic/viscoelastic mechanical coupling. Our study focuses on the comparison of physical properties and structure–property relationships in three systems with elastic PDMS segments of different length (8.6, 16.3, and 64.4 repeat units).

Abstract
Thermally activated shape memory polymers (SMPs) can memorize a temporary shape at low temperature and return to their permanent shape at higher temperature. These materials can be used for light and compact space deployment mechanisms. The control of transition temperature and thermomechanical properties of epoxy-based SMPs can be done using functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) additives, which are also known to improve the durability to atomic oxygen in the space environment. In this study, the influence of varying amounts of two types of POSS added to epoxy-based SMPs on the shape memory effect (SME) were studied. The first type contained amine groups, whereas the second type contained epoxide groups. The curing conditions were defined using differential scanning calorimetry and glass transition temperature (Tg) measurements. Thermomechanical and SME properties were characterized using dynamic mechanical analysis. It was found that SMPs containing amine-based POSS show higher Tg, better shape fixity and faster recovery speed, while SMPs containing epoxide-based POSS have higher crosslinking density and show superior thermomechanical properties above Tg. This work demonstrates how the Tg and SME of SMPs can be controlled by the type and amount of POSS in an epoxy-based SMP nanocomposite for future space applications.

Abstract
Herein, MWCNT-graft-polyimides (MWCNT-g-PIs) were prepared by the in situ grafting method. Strengthening the interfacial interaction between MWCNTs and polyimide chains decreased their interfacial thermal resistance (RC). In contrast to the RC of 10% MWCNT/PIs, the RC of 10% MWCNT-g-PI decreased by 16.7%. Hence, MWCNT-g-PIs possessed higher thermal conductivity than MWCNT/polyimides (MWCNT/PIs). Meanwhile, the Tg values of all the samples (MWCNT/PIs and MWCNT-g-PIs) were greater than 399 °C (by DMA). Compared with MWCNT/PIs, 5% and 10% MWCNT-g-PIs showed enhancement in thermal stability in air. The storage modulus retentions were greater than 63% at 200 °C and 45% at 300 °C. Also, 5% and 10% MWCNT-g-PIs maintained the high tensile strength of pure PI, and the tensile modulus increased up to 2.59 GPa on increasing the loading amount of MWCNTs. This study sheds light on improving the thermal conductivity of polyimides effectively at relatively low loadings. In situ synthesis of MWCNT-graft-polyimides enhanced thermal conductivity at a relatively low loading.![]()

Abstract
Versatile product protective coatings that deliver faster drying times and shorter minimum overcoat intervals that enable curing at faster line speeds and though lower energy consumption are often desired by coating manufacturers. Product protective coatings, based on silsesquioxane-modified diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) epoxy resin, are prepared through a glycidyl ring-opening polymerization using dicyandiamide (DICY) as a curing agent. As silsesquioxane modifier serves the octaglycidyl-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (GlyPOSS). To decrease the operational temperature of the curing processes, three different accelerators for crosslinking are tested, i.e., N,N-benzyl dimethylamine, 2-methylimidazole, and commercial Curezol 2MZ-A. Differential scanning calorimetry, temperature-dependent FT-IR spectroscopy, and rheology allow differentiation among accelerators’ effectiveness according to their structure. The former only contributed to epoxy ring-opening, while the latter two, besides participate in crosslinking. The surface roughness of the protective coatings on aluminum alloy substrate decreases when the accelerators are applied. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirms that coatings with accelerators are more homogeneous. The protective efficiency is tested with a potentiodynamic polarization technique in 0.5 M NaCl electrolyte. All coatings containing GlyPOSS, either without or with accelerators, reveal superior protective efficiency compared to neat DGEBA/DICY coating.

Abstract
New organic-inorganic hybrid copolymers (EA-POSSs) based on butyl acrylate, glycidyl methacylate, hydroxybutyl acrylate, acryloiloxybenzophenone and acryloxypropyl-heptaisobutyl-POSS (A-POSS) were prepared via free-radical solution polymerization (FRP) and applied as a component of thermally curable structural self-adhesive tapes (SATs). The EA-POSS with 0.25, 0.5 or 1 mol % of A-POSS exhibited significantly higher dynamic viscosity (ca. +104%), Mw (+61%) and polydispersity (+109%; measured using gel permeation chromatography) as well as lower Tg value (-16 °C) in relation to the A-POSS-free copolymer (EA-0). Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements (one glass transition process) confirmed statistic chain structure of the EA-POSS materials. Replacement of EA-0 by the EA-POSS copolymers in a SATs recipe caused simultaneous improvement of their self-adhesive features, i.e., adhesion (+70%), tack (+21%) and cohesion (+1590%). Moreover, the POSS-based copolymers improved the shear strength of thermally cured Al/SAT/Al overlap joints; the best mechanical resistance (before and after accelerated ageing tests) was observed for the sample containing 0.5 mol % of A-POSS (an increment range of 50-294% in relation to the A-POSS-free joints). Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) revealed markedly improved thermal stability of the A-POSS-based SATs as well.

Abstract
In this study, we enhanced the toughness of epoxy resin by blending it with the diblock copolymer poly(ethylene oxide⁻b⁻ε-caprolactone) (PEO-b-PCL) with a benzoxazine monomer (PA-OH) as the thermal curing agent. After thermal curing, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed that intermolecular hydrogen bonding existed between the OH units of the epoxy⁻benzoxazine copolymer and the C⁻O⁻C (C=O) units of the PEO (PCL) segment. Differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical analysis revealed that the glass transition temperature and storage modulus of the epoxy⁻benzoxazine matrix decreased significantly upon increasing the concentration of PEO-b-PCL. The Kwei equation predicted a positive value of q, consistent with intermolecular hydrogen bonding in this epoxy⁻benzoxazine/PEO-b-PCL blend system. Scanning electron microscopy revealed a wormlike structure with a high aspect ratio for PEO-b-PCL as the dispersed phase in the epoxy⁻benzoxazine matrix; this structure was responsible for the improved toughness.

Multi-Alkenylsilsesquioxanes as Comonomers and Active Species Modifiers of Metallocene Catalyst in Copolymerization with Ethylene. Polymers (Basel) 2018; 10:polym10020223. [PMID: 30966258 PMCID: PMC6415135 DOI: 10.3390/polym10020223] [Citation(s) in RCA: 8] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.3] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 01/24/2018] [Revised: 02/16/2018] [Accepted: 02/22/2018] [Indexed: 12/24/2022] Open
Abstract
The copolymers of ethylene (E) with open-caged iso-butyl-substituted tri-alkenyl-silsesquioxanes (POSS-6-3 and POSS-10-3) and phenyl-substituted tetra-alkenyl-silsesquioxane (POSS-10-4) were synthesized by copolymerization over the ansa-metallocene catalyst. The influence of the kind of silsesquioxane and of the copolymerization conditions on the reaction performance and on the properties of the copolymers was studied. In the case of copolymerization of E/POSS-6-3, the positive comonomer effect was observed, which was associated with the influence of POSS-6-3 on transformation of the bimetallic ion pair to the active catalytic species. Functionality of silsesquioxanes and polymerization parameters affected the polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) contents in the copolymers which varied in the range of 1.33–7.43 wt %. Tri-alkenyl-silsesquioxanes were incorporated into the polymer chain as pendant groups while the tetra-alkenyl-silsesquioxane derivative could act as a cross-linking agent which was proved by the changes in the contents of unsaturated end groups, by the glass transition temperature values, and by the gel contents (up to 81.3% for E/POSS-10-4). Incorporation of multi-alkenyl-POSS into the polymer chain affected also the melting and crystallization behaviors.

Abstract
Organic-inorganic nanocomposites composed of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) and epoxy resin were prepared via self-assembly of an amphiphilic triblock copolymer bearing a poly(POSS) midblock in epoxy thermosets. First, this organic-inorganic amphiphilic triblock copolymer was synthesized via hydrosilylation of heptaphenylhydro POSS with an existing triblock copolymer containing a short polybutadiene midblock. It was found that this novel amphiphilic block copolymer can self-assemble into nanophases in epoxy thermosets. In the presence of preformed nanophases, the curing reaction was performed, and the organic-inorganic nanocomposites containing poly(POSS) microdomains were thus obtained. Compared with plain epoxy, the as-obtained thermosets exhibited enhanced surface hydrophobicity; the enhanced surface hydrophobicity is attributed to enrichment of the POSS component at the surface of the materials. Owing to the formation of poly(POSS) microdomains, the dielectric constants of the materials significantly reduced, whereas the dielectric loss remained almost unchanged.

Abstract
The organic/inorganic hybrid materials from polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS, inorganic nanoparticles) and polybenzoxazine (PBZ) have received much interesting recently due to their excellent thermal and mechanical properties, flame retardance, low dielectric constant, well-defined inorganic framework at nanosized scale level, and higher performance relative to those of non-hybrid PBZs. This review describes the synthesis, dielectric constants, and thermal, rheological, and mechanical properties of covalently bonded mono- and multifunctionalized benzoxazine POSS hybrids, other functionalized benzoxazine POSS derivatives, and non-covalently (hydrogen) bonded benzoxazine POSS composites.
