Synthesis of Conductive Core−Shell Nanoparticles Based on Amphiphilic Starburst Poly(n-butyl acrylate)-b-poly(styrenesulfonate)

Sulfonated Block Copolymers: Synthesis, Chemical Modification, Self-Assembly Morphologies, and Recent Applications

Scientific research based on the self-assembly behavior of block copolymers (BCs) comprising charged-neutral segments has emerged as a novel strategy mainly looking for the optimization of efficiency in the generation and storage of electrical energy. The sulfonation reaction re- presents one of the most commonly employed methodologies by scientific investigations to reach the desired amphiphilic character, leading to enough ion concentration to modify and control the entire self-assembly behavior of the BCs. Recently, several works have studied and exploited these changes, inducing improvement on the mechanical properties, ionic conduction capabilities, colloidal solubility, interface activity, and stabilization of dispersed particles, among others. This review aims to present a description of recent works focused on obtaining amphiphilic block copolymers, specifically those that were synthesized by a living/controlled polymerization method and that have introduced the amphiphilic character by the sulfonation of one of the segments. Additionally, relevant works that have evidenced morphological and/or structural changes regarding the pristine BC as a result of the chemical modification are discussed. Finally, several emerging practical applications are analyzed to highlight the main drawbacks and challenges that should be addressed to overcome the development and understanding of these complex systems.

Synthesis of Star Polymers using Organocatalyzed Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization Through a Core-first Approach

Synthetic routes to higher ordered polymeric architectures are important tools for advanced materials design and realization. In this study, organocatalyzed atom transfer radical polymerization is employed for the synthesis of star polymers through a core-first approach using a visible-light absorbing photocatalyst, 3,7-di(4-biphenyl)-1-naphthalene-10-phenoxazine. Structurally similar multifunctional initiators possessing 2, 3, 4, 6, or 8 initiating sites were used in this study for the synthesis of linear telechelic polymers and star polymers typically possessing dispersities lower than 1.5 while achieving high initiator efficiencies. Furthermore, no evidence of undesirable star-star coupling reactions was observed, even at high monomer conversions and high degrees of polymerization. The utility of this system is further exemplified through the synthesis of well-defined diblock star polymers.

Synthesis of platinum(ii) complex end functionalized star polymers: luminescence enhancements and unimolecular micelles in solvents of weakened quality

Platinum(ii) complex end functionalized star polymers have been synthesized by reacting K₂PtCl₄ with star ligands ended with 2,6-bis(benzimidazol-2′-yl)pyridine. They show luminescence enhancements and form unimolecular micelles in solvents of weakened quality.

Synthesis and characterization of pH-responsive nanoscale hydrogels for oral delivery of hydrophobic therapeutics

pH-responsive, polyanionic nanoscale hydrogels were developed for the oral delivery of hydrophobic therapeutics, such as common chemotherapeutic agents. Nanoscale hydrogels were designed to overcome physicochemical and biological barriers associated with oral delivery of hydrophobic therapeutics such as low solubility and poor permeability due to P-glycoprotein related drug efflux. Synthesis of these nanoscale materials was achieved by a robust photoemulsion polymerization method. By varying hydrophobic monomer components, four formulations were synthesized and screened for optimal physicochemical properties and in vitro biocompatibility. All of the responsive nanoscale hydrogels were capable of undergoing a pH-dependent transition in size. Depending on the selection of the hydrophobic monomer, the sizes of the nanoparticles vary widely from 120nm to about 500nm at pH 7.4. Polymer composition was verified using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and ¹H-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Polymer biocompatibility was assessed in vitro with an intestinal epithelial cell model. All formulations were found to have no appreciable cytotoxicity, defined as greater than 80% viability after polymer incubation. We demonstrate that these nanoscale hydrogels possess desirable physicochemical properties and exhibit agreeable in vitro biocompatibility for oral delivery applications.

Synthesis and mechanistic study of stable water-soluble noble metal nanostructures

Sodium salt of poly(4-styrenesulfonic acid-co-maleic acid) (PSSMA) has been employed to prepare a series of stable nanosized metal colloids such as silver, gold, palladium, platinum, and silver-gold alloy nanostructures. All of the as-synthesized products are very stable in water. The metal nanostructures have been directly confirmed by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM, and selected area electron diffraction (SAED), and also characterized by techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and (1)H NMR. Intensive study has found that the metal ions are most probably reduced by organic radicals, generated from the thermal degradation of PSSMA.
