Molecular Weight Effects and the Sequential Dynamic Nature of Poly(ethylene oxide) Adsorption on Silica from Polydisperse Aqueous Solution

Impact of incubation conditions and post-treatment on the properties of bacterial cellulose membranes for pressure-driven filtration

Bacterial cellulose (BC) has shown potential as a separation material. Herein, the performance of BC in pressure-driven separation is investigated as a function of incubation conditions and post-culture treatment. The pure water flux of never-dried BC (NDBC), was found to be 9 to 16 times higher than that for dried BC (DBC), in a pressure range of 0.25 to 2.5 bar. The difference in pressure response of NDBC and DBC was observed both in cross-flow filtration and capillary flow porometry experiments. DBC and NDBC were permeable to polymers with a hydrodynamic radius of ∼60 nm while protein retention was possible by introducing anionic surface charges on BC. The results of this work are expected to expand the development of BC-based filtration membranes, for instance towards the processing of biological fluids.

Adsorption of poly(ethylene oxide)-containing amphiphilic polymers on solid-liquid interfaces: Fundamentals and applications

The adsorption of amphiphilic molecules of varying size on solid-liquid interfaces modulates the properties of colloidal systems. Nonionic, poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based amphiphilic molecules are particularly useful because of their graded hydrophobic-hydrophilic nature, which allows for adsorption on a wide array of solid surfaces. Their adsorption also results in other useful properties, such as responsiveness to external stimuli and solubilization of hydrophobic compounds. This review focuses on the adsorption properties of PEO-based amphiphiles, beginning with a discussion of fundamental concepts pertaining to the adsorption of macromolecules on solid-liquid interfaces, and more specifically the adsorption of PEO homopolymers. The main portion of the review highlights studies on factors affecting the adsorption and surface self-assembly of PEO-PPO-PEO block copolymers, where PPO is poly(propylene oxide). Block copolymers of this type are commercially available and of interest in several fields, due to their low toxicity and compatibility in aqueous systems. Examples of applications relevant to the interfacial behavior of PEO-PPO-PEO block copolymers are paints and coatings, detergents, filtration, and drug delivery. The methods discussed herein for manipulating the adsorption properties of PEO-PPO-PEO are emphasized for their ability to shed light on molecular interactions at interfaces. Knowledge of these interactions guides the formulation of novel materials with useful mesoscale organization and micro- and macrophase properties.

In situ ATR FTIR study of dextrin adsorption on anatase TiO2

The adsorption of two dextrin-based polymers, a regular wheat dextrin (TY) and a carboxymethyl-substituted (CM) dextrin, onto an anatase TiO(2) particle film has been studied using in situ attenuated total reflection (ATR) FTIR spectroscopy. Infrared spectra of the polymer solutions and the polymer adsorbed at the anatase surface were acquired for two solution conditions: pH 3 and pH 9; below and above the isoelectric point (IEP) of anatase, respectively. Comparison of the polymer solution spectra and the adsorbed layer spectra highlighted a number of spectral differences that were attributed to involvement of the carboxyl group of CM Dextrin interacting with the anatase surface directly and the adsorption of oxidized dextrin chains in the case of regular dextrin (TY) at high pH. The adsorption/desorption kinetics were determined by monitoring spectral peaks of the pyranose ring of both polymers. Adsorption equilibrium was not established for Dextrin TY for many hours, whereas CM Dextrin reached equilibrium in its adsorption within 60 min. The extent of desorption of Dextrin TY (observed by flowing a background electrolyte dextrin-free solution) was extensive at both pH values, which reflects the poor affinity and binding of the polymer on anatase. In contrast, CM Dextrin underwent almost no desorption, indicating a high affinity between the carboxyl groups of the polymer and the anatase surface.

Adsorption and Exchange Dynamics in Aging Hydroxyethylcellulose Layers on Silica

The adsorption kinetics of hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) on silica and relaxations in adsorbed HEC layers were probed using total internal reflectance fluorescence and near-Brewster reflectivity. Like many random-coil polymers, HEC was found to adsorb at the transport-limited rate. Relaxations occurred at nearly constant interfacial mass when HEC layers were exposed to aqueous solvent, causing the subsequent exchange of chains between the layer and the free solution to become increasingly hindered. Eventually, on the time scale of a day, layers became immobilized and unable to accommodate chains from free solution. A continued fluorescence decay, beyond time scales that could be probed with self exchange, suggested further relaxations of the adsorbed HEC. The polydisperse HEC system (with an average molecular weight near 450,000) behaved qualitatively similar to molecular weight standard polyethylene oxide (PEO) layers on silica. For instance, relaxations in PEO layers occurred on a time scale of 10-20 h, like the HEC layers. Young layers of the latter, however, exhibited self-exchange kinetics that were an order of magnitude slower than PEO layers of similar age. This difference in adsorbed layer dynamics was attributed to HEC's stiffer backbone, compared with flexible PEO. Copyright 2000 Academic Press.
