Abstract
Homo-polymers of reasonable molecular weight relax very fast in the molten state. Starting from a semi-crystalline structure, when the homo-polymer is heated up to a temperature higher than its nominal melting temperature, it relaxes quickly into a homogenous molten state. The following crystallization temperature during cooling remains constant irrespective of the melt temperature. However, the situation is evidently different in copolymers. A phenomenon named the crystallization melt memory effect denotes an increased crystallization rate during cooling after a polymer was melted at different temperatures, which is often observed. The melt temperature can be even higher than the equilibrium melting temperature of the corresponding polymer crystals. In this work, we investigated such memory effect in a polyethylene random terpolymer with a small fraction of 1-octene and 1-hexene co-units using differential scanning calorimetry techniques. Both non-isothermal and isothermal protocols were employed. In non-isothermal tests, a purposely prepared sample with well defined thermal history (the sample has been first conditioned at 200 °C for 5 min to eliminate the thermal history and then cooled down to −50 °C) was melted at different temperatures, followed by a continuous cooling at a constant rate of 20 °C/min. Peak crystallization temperature during cooling was taken to represent the crystallization rate. Whereas, in isothermal tests, the same prepared sample with well defined thermal history was cooled to a certain crystallization temperature after being melted at different temperatures. Here, time to complete the isothermal crystallization was recorded. It was found that the results of isothermal tests allowed us to divide the melt temperature into four zones where the features of the crystallization half time change.

Abstract
A combined melt-stretching and quenching setup is designed and developed to allow experimental investigations of polymer crystallization under the complex flow-temperature environments comparable to those encountered in the actual industrial processing. The melt-stretching proceeds by two drums rotating in the opposite directions with simultaneous recording of a stress-strain curve, where the Hencky strain and strain rate (≤233 s-1) are adjustable over a large range. After stretching, liquid N2 is used as a cooling medium to quench the free-standing melt, which is sprayed directly to the deformed melt driven by an electric pump. To ensure a high cooling efficiency, a three-way solenoid valve is employed to execute a sequential control of the liquid N2 flow direction to reduce the boil-off of liquid N2 before entering the sample chamber. The melt cooling rate depends on the liquid N2 flow rate controlled by a flow valve, which is up to 221 °C/s when quenching the isotactic polypropylene (iPP) melt with a thickness of 0.28 mm at 150 °C. Two independent temperature control modules are designed to meet the requirements of different stages of melt-stretching and quenching. To verify the capability of the setup, we have performed the melt-stretching and quenching experiments on iPP samples. The setup is demonstrated to be a valuable new tool to study polymer crystallization under coupled flow-cooling fields.

Abstract
Semicrystalline polymers are ubiquitous, yet despite their fundamental and industrial importance, the theory of homogeneous nucleation from a melt remains a subject of debate. A key component of the controversy is that polymer crystallization is a non-equilibrium process, making it difficult to distinguish between effects that are purely kinetic and those that arise from the underlying thermodynamics. Due to computational cost constraints, simulations of polymer crystallization typically employ non-equilibrium molecular dynamics techniques with large degrees of undercooling that further exacerbate the coupling between thermodynamics and kinetics. In a departure from this approach, in this study, we isolate the near-equilibrium nucleation behavior of a simple model of a melt of short, semiflexible oligomers. We employ several Monte Carlo methods and compute a phase diagram in the temperature-density plane along with two-dimensional free energy landscapes (FELs) that characterize the nucleation behavior. The phase diagram shows the existence of ordered nematic and crystalline phases in addition to the disordered melt phase. The minimum free energy path in the FEL for the melt-crystal transition shows a cooperative transition, where nematic order and monomer positional order move in tandem as the system crystallizes. This near-equilibrium phase transition mechanism broadly agrees with recent evidence that polymer stiffness plays an important role in crystallization but differs in the specifics of the mechanism from several recent theories. We conclude that the computation of multidimensional FELs for models that are larger and more fine-grained will be important for evaluating and refining theories of homogeneous nucleation for polymer crystallization.

Abstract
I develop a kinetic mechanism to explain chain folding in polymer crystallization which is based on the competition between the formation of stems, which is due to frequent occupations of trans states along the chains in the supercooled polymer melt, and the random coil structure of the polymer chains. Setting equal the average formation time of stems of length d(l) with the Rouse time of a piece of polymer of the same arc length d(l) yields a lower bound for the thickness of stems and bundles. The estimated lamellar thickness is inversely proportional to the supercooling. The present approach emphasizes the importance of repulsive interactions in polymer crystallization, which are expected to be responsible for the logarithmic lamellar thickening and the increase of lamellar thickness with pressure. An expression for the growth rate for formation and deposition of stems is derived by considering the growth as a dynamic multistage process.
