Simultaneously high stiffness and damping in nanoengineered microtruss composites

Anisotropic Alignment of Bacterial Nanocellulose Ionogels for Unconventionally High Combination of Stiffness and Damping

Ionogels are emerging materials for advanced electrochemical devices; however, their mechanical instability to external stresses has raised concerns about their safety. This study reports aligned bacterial nanocellulose (BC) ionogel films swelled with the model ionic liquid (IL) of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (EMImBF₄) for an unprecedented combination of high stiffness and high energy dissipation without significant loss of ionic conductivity. The aligned BC ionogel films are prepared through wet-state stretching methods, followed by drying and swelling by ILs. The aligned ionogel films exhibit significantly improved dynamic mechanical properties, overcoming the mechanical conventional limit of traditional materials by 2.0 times at 25 °C and by a maximum of 4.0 times at 0 °C. Additionally, the same samples exhibit relatively high ionic conductivities of 0.16 mS cm^-1 at 20 °C and 0.45 mS cm^-1 at 60 °C with storage moduli over 10 GPa. The synergistic effect of the mechanical reinforcements by alignment of the BC nanofibers and the plasticizing effects by ILs could be attributed to the significant enhancement of dynamic mechanical properties and the retention of ionic conductivities. These results will lead to a deeper understanding of the material design for mechanically superior ionogel systems with increasing demands for advanced electronic and electrochemical devices.

Multiscale engineered artificial tooth enamel

Tooth enamel, renowned for its high stiffness, hardness, and viscoelasticity, is an ideal model for designing biomimetic materials, but accurate replication of complex hierarchical organization of high-performance biomaterials in scalable abiological composites is challenging. We engineered an enamel analog with the essential hierarchical structure at multiple scales through assembly of amorphous intergranular phase (AIP)-coated hydroxyapatite nanowires intertwined with polyvinyl alcohol. The nanocomposite simultaneously exhibited high stiffness, hardness, strength, viscoelasticity, and toughness, exceeding the properties of enamel and previously manufactured bulk enamel-inspired materials. The presence of AIP, polymer confinement, and strong interfacial adhesion are all needed for high mechanical performance. This multiscale design is suitable for scalable production of high-performance materials.

An Amorphous Peri-Implant Ligament with Combined Osteointegration and Energy-Dissipation

Progress toward developing metal implants as permanent hard-tissue substitutes requires both osteointegration to achieve load-bearing support, and energy-dissipation to prevent overload-induced bone resorption. However, in existing implants these two properties can only be achieved separately. Optimized by natural evolution, tooth-periodontal-ligaments with fiber-bundle structures can efficiently orchestrate load-bearing and energy dissipation, which make tooth-bone complexes survive extremely high occlusion loads (>300 N) for prolonged lifetimes. Here, a bioinspired peri-implant ligament with simultaneously enhanced osteointegration and energy-dissipation is presented, which is based on the periodontium-mimetic architecture of a polymer-infiltrated, amorphous, titania nanotube array. The artificial ligament not only provides exceptional osteoinductivity owing to its nanotopography and beneficial ingredients, but also produces periodontium-similar energy dissipation due to the complexity of the force transmission modes and interface sliding. The ligament increases bone-implant contact by more than 18% and simultaneously reduces the effective stress transfer from implant to peri-implant bone by ≈30% as compared to titanium implants, which as far as is known has not previously been achieved. It is anticipated that the concept of an artificial ligament will open new possibilities for developing high-performance implanted materials with increased lifespans.

Diphenolic acid-modified PAMAM/chlorinated butyl rubber nanocomposites with superior mechanical, damping, and self-healing properties

Based on its excellent damping properties, traditional rubber has been widely used in various industries, including aerospace, rail transit and automotive. However, the disadvantages of effective damping area, unstable damping performance, easy fatigue, and aging, greatly limited the further application of rubber materials. Thus, it is important to develop novel modified rubber damping materials. Herein, polyamidoamine dendrimers with terminal-modified phenolic hydroxyl and amine groups (G2 PAMAM-H) were designed and used as modifiers to improve the damping performance of chlorinated butyl rubber (CIIR). The results showed that the modification of G2 PAMAM by diphenolic acid can avoid its aggregation in the CIIR matrix. CIIR/G2 PAMAM-H nanocomposites exhibited high tan δ _max of 1.52 and wide damping temperature region of 140°C (tan δ > 0.55)at a very low loading (4.32 wt.%), which were strongerthan that of pure CIIR and CIIR/G2 PAMAM nanocomposites. In addition, these nanocomposites also exhibited a unique self-healing ability by multiple hydrogen bonds, which can effectively extend the life of the rubber material in actual production. Therefore, the dendrimer modification provided unique development opportunities for elastomers in certain highly engineered fields, such as vehicles, rail transit, aerospace, etc.

Strong, Ultralight Nanofoams with Extreme Recovery and Dissipation by Manipulation of Internal Adhesive Contacts

Advances in three-dimensional nanofabrication techniques have enabled the development of lightweight solids, such as hollow nanolattices, having record values of specific stiffness and strength, albeit at low production throughput. At the length scales of the structural elements of these solids-which are often tens of nanometers or smaller-forces required for elastic deformation can be comparable to adhesive forces, rendering the possibility to tailor bulk mechanical properties based on the relative balance of these forces. Herein, we study this interplay via the mechanics of ultralight ceramic-coated carbon nanotube (CNT) structures. We show that ceramic-CNT foams surpass other architected nanomaterials in density-normalized strength and that, when the structures are designed to minimize internal adhesive interactions between CNTs, more than 97% of the strain after compression beyond densification is recovered. Via experiments and modeling, we study the dependence of the recovery and dissipation on the coating thickness, demonstrate that internal adhesive contacts impede recovery, and identify design guidelines for ultralight materials to have maximum recovery. The combination of high recovery and dissipation in ceramic-CNT foams may be useful in structural damping and shock absorption, and the general principles could be broadly applied to both architected and stochastic nanofoams.

Abiotic tooth enamel

Tooth enamel comprises parallel microscale and nanoscale ceramic columns or prisms interlaced with a soft protein matrix. This structural motif is unusually consistent across all species from all geological eras. Such invariability-especially when juxtaposed with the diversity of other tissues-suggests the existence of a functional basis. Here we performed ex vivo replication of enamel-inspired columnar nanocomposites by sequential growth of zinc oxide nanowire carpets followed by layer-by-layer deposition of a polymeric matrix around these. We show that the mechanical properties of these nanocomposites, including hardness, are comparable to those of enamel despite the nanocomposites having a smaller hard-phase content. Our abiotic enamels have viscoelastic figures of merit (VFOM) and weight-adjusted VFOM that are similar to, or higher than, those of natural tooth enamels-we achieve values that exceed the traditional materials limits of 0.6 and 0.8, respectively. VFOM values describe resistance to vibrational damage, and our columnar composites demonstrate that light-weight materials of unusually high resistance to structural damage from shocks, environmental vibrations and oscillatory stress can be made using biomimetic design. The previously inaccessible combinations of high stiffness, damping and light weight that we achieve in these layer-by-layer composites are attributed to efficient energy dissipation in the interfacial portion of the organic phase. The in vivo contribution of this interfacial portion to macroscale deformations along the tooth's normal is maximized when the architecture is columnar, suggesting an evolutionary advantage of the columnar motif in the enamel of living species. We expect our findings to apply to all columnar composites and to lead to the development of high-performance load-bearing materials.

Predictive Synthesis of Freeform Carbon Nanotube Microarchitectures by Strain-Engineered Chemical Vapor Deposition

High-throughput fabrication of microstructured surfaces with multi-directional, re-entrant, or otherwise curved features is becoming increasingly important for applications such as phase change heat transfer, adhesive gripping, and control of electromagnetic waves. Toward this goal, curved microstructures of aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can be fabricated by engineered variation of the CNT growth rate within each microstructure, for example by patterning of the CNT growth catalyst partially upon a layer which retards the CNT growth rate. This study develops a finite-element simulation framework for predictive synthesis of complex CNT microarchitectures by this strain-engineered growth process. The simulation is informed by parametric measurements of the CNT growth kinetics, and the anisotropic mechanical properties of the CNTs, and predicts the shape of CNT microstructures with impressive fidelity. Moreover, the simulation calculates the internal stress distribution that results from extreme deformation of the CNT structures during growth, and shows that delamination of the interface between the differentially growing segments occurs at a critical shear stress. Guided by these insights, experiments are performed to study the time- and geometry-depended stress development, and it is demonstrated that corrugating the interface between the segments of each microstructure mitigates the interface failure. This study presents a methodology for 3D microstructure design based on "pixels" that prescribe directionality to the resulting microstructure, and show that this framework enables the predictive synthesis of more complex architectures including twisted and truss-like forms.

Viscous-to-viscoelastic transition in phononic crystal and metamaterial band structures

The dispersive behavior of phononic crystals and locally resonant metamaterials is influenced by the type and degree of damping in the unit cell. Dissipation arising from viscoelastic damping is influenced by the past history of motion because the elastic component of the damping mechanism adds a storage capacity. Following a state-space framework, a Bloch eigenvalue problem incorporating general viscoelastic damping based on the Zener model is constructed. In this approach, the conventional Kelvin-Voigt viscous-damping model is recovered as a special case. In a continuous fashion, the influence of the elastic component of the damping mechanism on the band structure of both a phononic crystal and a metamaterial is examined. While viscous damping generally narrows a band gap, the hereditary nature of the viscoelastic conditions reverses this behavior. In the limit of vanishing heredity, the transition between the two regimes is analyzed. The presented theory also allows increases in modal dissipation enhancement (metadamping) to be quantified as the type of damping transitions from viscoelastic to viscous. In conclusion, it is shown that engineering the dissipation allows one to control the dispersion (large versus small band gaps) and, conversely, engineering the dispersion affects the degree of dissipation (high or low metadamping).

Controlling effective aspect ratio and packing of clay with pH for improved gas barrier in nanobrick wall thin films

Polymer-clay thin films constructed via layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly, with a nanobrick wall structure (i.e., clay nanoplatelets as bricks surrounded by a polyelectrolyte mortar), are known to exhibit a high oxygen barrier. Further barrier improvement can be achieved by lowering the pH of the clay suspension in the polyethylenimine (PEI) and montmorillonite (MMT) system. In this case, the charge of the deposited PEI layer is increased in the clay suspension environment, which causes more clay to be deposited. At pH 4, MMT platelets deposit with near perfect ordering, observed with transmission electron microscopy, enabling a 5× improvement in the gas barrier for a 10 PEI/MMT bilayer thin film (85 nm) relative to the same film made with pH 10 MMT. This improved gas barrier approaches that achieved with much higher aspect ratio vermiculite clay. In essence, lower pH is generating a higher effective aspect ratio for MMT due to greater induced surface charge in the PEI layers, which causes heavier clay deposition. These flexible, transparent nanocoatings have a wide range of possible applications, from food and electronics packaging to pressurized bladders.

Optothermally responsive nanocomposite generating mechanical forces for cells enabled by few-walled carbon nanotubes

We have designed and fabricated a nanocomposite substrate that can deliver spatially and temporally defined mechanical forces onto cells. This nanocomposite substrate comprises a 1.5-mm-thick near-infrared (NIR) mechanoresponsive bottom layer of few-walled carbon nanotubes (FWCNTs) that are uniformly distributed and covalently connected to thermally responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) and an approximately 0.15-mm-thick cell-seeding top layer of collagen-functionalized poly(acrylic acid)-co-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) that interpenetrates into the bottom layer. Covalent coupling of all the components and uniform distribution of FWCNTs lead to a large local mechanoresponse. As an example, 50% change in strain at the point of irradiation on the order of 0.05 Hz can be produced reversibly under NIR stimulation with 0.02 wt % FWCNTs. We have further demonstrated that the mechanical strain imposed by NIR stimulation can be transmitted onto cells. Human fetal hepatocytes change shape with no sign of detrimental effect on cell viability. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a nanocomposite platform that can generate fast and controlled mechanical force to actuate cells. Since the amplitude, location, and timing of force can be controlled remotely with NIR, the nanocomposite substrate offers the potential to provide accurately designed force sequences for tissue engineering.
