Quantum Sensing of Thermoelectric Power in Low-Dimensional Materials

Thermoelectric power, has been extensively studied in low-dimensional materials where quantum confinement and spin textures can largely modulate thermopower generation. In addition to classical and macroscopic values, thermopower also varies locally over a wide range of length scales, and is fundamentally linked to electron wave functions and phonon propagation. Various experimental methods for the quantum sensing of localized thermopower have been suggested, particularly based on scanning probe microscopy. Here, critical advances in the quantum sensing of thermopower are introduced, from the atomic to the several-hundred-nanometer scales, including the unique role of low-dimensionality, defects, spins, and relativistic effects for optimized power generation. Investigating the microscopic nature of thermopower in quantum materials can provide insights useful for the design of advanced materials for future thermoelectric applications. Quantum sensing techniques for thermopower can pave the way to practical and novel energy devices for a sustainable society.

Spin-Dependent Thermoelectric Power of Nanoislands

The Seebeck effect explains the generation of electric voltage as a result of a temperature gradient. Its efficiency, defined as the ratio of the generated electric voltage to the temperature difference, is sensitive to local inhomogeneities that alter the scattering rate and the density of the conduction electrons. Spin-polarized Seebeck tunneling generates a distinct thermovoltage in spin-up and spin-down charge transport channels, which, as a key to spin caloritronics, focuses on transport phenomena related to spin and heat. Here, we report spatially resolved measurement of the spin-dependent thermovoltage in a tunneling junction formed by ferromagnetic Co nanoislands and a Ni tip using spin-dependent scanning tunneling thermovoltage microscopy (SP-STV_thM). We resolve the nanoscale thermoelectric powers with respect to spin polarization, nanoisland size, stacking order of Co layers on a Cu substrate, and local sample heterogeneities. The observed thermally generated spin voltages are supported by first-principles and model calculations.

Magneto-Seebeck tunneling on the atomic scale

The tunneling of spin-polarized electrons across a magnetic tunnel junction driven by a temperature gradient is a fundamental process for the thermal control of electron spin transport. We experimentally investigated the atomic-scale details of this magneto-Seebeck tunneling by placing a magnetic probe tip in close proximity to a magnetic sample at cryogenic temperature, with a vacuum as the tunneling barrier. Heating the tip and measuring the thermopower of the junction while scanning across the spin texture of the sample lead to spin-resolved Seebeck coefficients that can be mapped at atomic-scale lateral resolution. We propose a spin detector for spintronics applications that is driven solely by waste heat, using magneto-Seebeck tunneling to convert spin information into a voltage that can be used for further data processing.

Roles of vacuum tunnelling and contact mechanics in single-molecule thermopower

Molecular junction is a chemically-defined nanostructure whose discrete electronic states are expected to render enhanced thermoelectric figure of merit suitable for energy-harvesting applications. Here, we report on geometrical dependence of thermoelectricity in metal-molecule-metal structures. We performed simultaneous measurements of the electrical conductance and thermovoltage of aromatic molecules having different anchoring groups at room temperature in vacuum. We elucidated the mutual contributions of vacuum tunnelling on thermoelectricity in the short molecular bridges. We also found stretching-induced thermoelectric voltage enhancement in thiol-linked single-molecule bridges along with absence of the pulling effects in diamine counterparts, thereby suggested that the electromechanical effect would be a rather universal phenomenon in Au-S anchored molecular junctions that undergo substantial metal-molecule contact elongation upon stretching. The present results provide a novel concept for molecular design to achieve high thermopower with single-molecule junctions.
