Abstract
Due to its highly conjugated panel-like structure and unique photophysical and chemical features, anthracene has been widely used for fabricating attractive and functional supramolecular assemblies, including two-dimensional metallacycles and three-dimensional metallacages. The embedded anthracenes in these assemblies often show synergistic effects on enhancing the desired supramolecular and luminescent properties. This review focuses on the metallasupramolecular architectures with anthracene-containing building blocks, as well as their applications in host-guest chemistry, stimulus response, molecular sensing, light harvesting, and biomedical science.

Abstract
Supramolecular one-step self-assembly of dimanganese decacarbonyl, diaryl diselenide, and linear dipyridyl ligands (L = pyrazine (pz), 4,4'-bipyridine (bpy), and trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene (bpe)) has resulted in the formation of selenolato-bridged manganese(I)-based metallorectangles. The synthesis of tetranuclear Mn(I)-based metallorectangles [{(CO)3Mn(μ-SeR)2Mn(CO)3}2(μ-L)2] (1-6) was facilitated by the oxidative addition of diaryl diselenide to dimanganese decacarbonyl with the simultaneous coordination of linear bidentate pyridyl linker in an orthogonal fashion. Formation of metallorectangles 1-6 was ascertained using IR, UV-vis, NMR spectroscopic techniques, and elemental analyses. The molecular mass of compounds 2, 4, and 6 were determined by ESI-mass spectrometry. Solid-state structural elucidation of 2, 3, and 6 by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods revealed a rectangular framework wherein selenolato-bridges and pyridyl ligands define the shorter and longer edges, respectively. Also, the guest binding capability of metallorectangles 3 and 5 with different aromatic guests was studied using UV-vis absorption and emission spectrophotometric titration methods that affirmed strong host-guest binding interactions. The formation of the host-guest complex between metallorectangle 3 and pyrene has been explicitly corroborated by the single-crystal X-ray structure of 3•pyrene. Moreover, select metallorectangles 1-4 and 6 were studied to explore their anticancer activity, while CO-releasing ability of metallorectangle 2 was further appraised using equine heart myoglobin assay.

Abstract
We present a rapid and efficient method to generate a family of platinum supramolecular square complexes, including previously inaccessible targets, through the use of ball milling mechanochemistry. This one-pot, two-step process occurs in minutes and enables the synthesis of the squares [Pt4(en)4(N∩N)4][CF3SO3]8 (en= ethylenediamine, N∩N = 4,4'-bipyridine derivatives) from commercially available precursor K2PtCl4 in good to excellent yields. In contrast, solution-based assembly requires heating the reagents for weeks and gives lower yields. Mechanistic investigations into this remarkable rate acceleration revealed that solution-based assembly (refluxing for days) results in the formation of large oligomeric side-products that are difficult to break down into the desired squares. On the other hand, ball milling in the solid state is rapid and appears to involve smaller intermediates. We examined the binding of the new supramolecular squares to guanine quadruplexes, including oncogene and telomere-associated DNA and RNA sequences. Sub-micromolar binding affinities were obtained by fluorescence displacement assays (FID) and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), with binding preference to telomere RNA (TERRA) sequences. ITC showed a 1:1 binding stoichiometry of the metallosquare to TERRA, while the stoichiometry was more complex for telomeric quadruplex DNA and a double-stranded DNA control.

Abstract
A suite of eight cationic, tetra-metallic molecular rectangles (1-8) was generated via coordination-driven self-assembly using four dicarboxylate-bridged arene-Ru precursors (A1-A4) with one of two dipyridyl ligands (D1, D2). The high-yielding (84-92%) rectangles were characterized by (1)H NMR and HR-ESI-MS to support their structural assignments. The molecular structure of 5 was determined by single crystal X-ray analysis, which indicated that two D2 ligands bridge two A1 acceptors to form a rectangular construct. The photophysical properties of these metalla-rectangles and their molecular precursors were also investigated, as well as an MTT assay to evaluate the in vitro cytotoxicities relative to two chemotherapeutic agents, cisplatin and doxorubicin. MTT assays were conducted using SK-hep-1 (liver cancer) and HCT-15 (colon cancer) human cancer cell lines. Compounds 3, 4, 7 and 8 showed significant activity, with IC(50) values comparable to those of cisplatin and doxorubicin.

Abstract
Rigid rectangular, triangular, and prismatic supramolecular assemblies, cyclobis[(2,9-bis[trans-Pt(PEt(3))(2)(PF(6))]anthracene)(4,4'-dipyridyl)], cyclotris[(2,9-bis[trans-Pt(PEt(3))(2)(PF(6))]phenanthrene)(4,4'-dipyridyl)], and cyclotris[bis[cis-Pt(PEt(3))(2)(CF(3)SO(3))(2)]tetrakis(4-pyridyl)cyclobutadienecyclopentadienylcobalt(I)], respectively, based on dipyridyl ligands and square planar platinum coordination, have been investigated by ion mobility spectrometry-mass spectrometry (IMS-MS). Electrospray ionization-quadrupole and time-of-flight spectra have been obtained and fragmentation pathways assigned. Ion mobility studies give cross sections that compare very well with cross sections of the supramolecular rectangle and triangle species on the basis of X-ray bond distances. For the larger prism structures, agreement of experimental and calculated cross sections from molecular modeling is very good, indicating IMS-MS methods can be used to characterize complex self-assembled structures where X-ray or other spectroscopic structures are not available.

Abstract
The design and self-assembly of novel cavity-cored metallodendrimers via noncovalent interactions are described. By employing [G0]-[G3] 120 degrees ditopic donor linkers substituted with Fréchet-type dendrons and appropriate rigid di-Pt(II) acceptor subunits, [G0]-[G3]-rhomboidal metallodendrimers and [G0]-[G3]-hexagonal, "snowflake-shaped" metallodendrimers with well-defined shape and size were prepared under mild conditions in high yields. The assemblies were characterized with multinuclear NMR ((1)H and (31)P), mass spectrometry (ESI-MS and ESI-FT-ICR-MS), and elemental analysis. Isotopically resolved mass spectrometry data support the existence of the metallodendrimers with rhomboidal and hexagonal cavities, and NMR data are consistent with the formation of all ensembles. The structures of [G0]- and [G1]-rhomboidal metallodendrimers were unambiguously confirmed via single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The shape and size of two [G3]-hexagonal metallodendrimers were investigated with MM2 force-field modeling.

Abstract
[structure: see text] The facile syntheses of enantiopure molecular rectangles using 1,8-bis(trans-Pt(PEt(3))(2)(NO(3)))anthracene and optically pure d- or l-tartrate are reported in high yields. These self-assembled macrocycles are unique examples where the phenomenon of induced chiral dichroism (ICD) has been observed in chiral metallosupramolecular assemblies.

Abstract
[structure: see text] We have combined carborane chemistry with the newly developed directional bonding strategy to synthesize neutral macrocycles. The m- and p-carborane dicarboxylates were utilized as the donor linkers in conjunction with 1,8-bis[trans-Pt(PEt3)2NO3]anthracene 3, 2,9-bis[trans-Pt(PEt3)2NO3]phenanthrene 5, and cis-Pt(PEt3)2(NO3)2 unit 6. Three new platinum-based macrocycles, 4, 7, and 8, were thus synthesized. 31P{1H} NMR as well as the X-ray characterization of Pt-metallacycles reveal the formation of single highly symmetrical neutral species.

Abstract
The structure and conformation of three self-assembled supramolecular species, a rectangle, a square, and a three-dimensional cage, on Au111 surfaces were investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy. These supramolecular assemblies adsorb on Au111 surfaces and self-organize to form highly ordered adlayers with distinct conformations that are consistent with their chemical structures. The faces of the supramolecular rectangle and square lie flat on the surface, preserving their rectangle and square conformations, respectively. The three-dimensional cage also forms well-ordered adlayers on the gold surface, forming regular molecular rows of assemblies. When the rectangle and cage were mixed together, the assemblies separated into individual domains, and no mixed adlayers were observed. These results provide direct evidence of the noncrystalline solid-state structures of these assemblies and information about how they self-organize on Au111 surfaces, which is of importance in the potential manufacturing of functional nanostructures and devices.

Abstract
Aromatic molecular "clips" bearing two symmetrically bound platinum moieties have been prepared. The molecular "clip" 4 readily self-assembled with linear linkers such as 4,4'-bipyridyl, 1,4-bis[2-(4-isocyano-3,5-diisopropylphenyl)ethynyl]benzene, and nicotinic acid to form molecular rectangles. The overall dimensions of the rectangle 7 were 7.3 Angstroms x 15.3 Angstroms. The molecular "clip" also self-assembled with tritopic pyridyl and isocyanide ligands to form trigonal prismatic frameworks. The characterization of the supramolecules by multinuclear NMR, electrospray mass spectrometry, and X-ray crystal structures is also reported.

Abstract
Five neutral platinum-based macrocycles incorporating cyclic oxocarbondianions, squarate and croconate and their acyclic analogue, oxalate, have been synthesized in 90-95% yield via self-assembly. The combination of the diplatinum molecular clip with all three dianions afforded molecular rectangles, whereas a platinum-based 60 degrees acceptor unit produced a supramolecular rhomboid with croconate ion but a triangle with squarate ion. In all cases, multinuclear NMR spectra were consistent with the formation of single highly symmetrical species. The three rectanglular and the rhomboid assemblies were characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The triangular species was characterized by FAB mass spectrometry.

Abstract
Two homoleptic pyridyl-functionalized C,N-ortho-chelating aminoaryl platinum(II) complexes, cis-[Pt(eta(2)-C,N)] (3a,b), were prepared via an unconventional method involving the initial synthesis of a bromide-functionalized C,N-chelating aminoaryl platinum(II) precursor complex 8, to which subsequently pyridyl groups were attached via a Suzuki-Miyaura C-C coupling reaction. The electron-donating properties of the pyridyl nitrogen atoms of the resulting complexes (3a,b) were used in complexation reactions with monocationic NCN-pincer (NCN = [C6H3(CH2NMe2)(2-)2,6]-) platinum(II) (11a) and palladium(II) (12a) nitrate complexes [M(NCN)(NO3)], thereby obtaining four trimetallic coordination complexes 16-19. The difference in the pyridine-metal coordination behavior between platinum and palladium was studied by varying the ratios of the reagents and by variable-temperature NMR experiments. IR and Raman analyses of 11a and 12a were performed to determine the coordination behavior of the nitrate counteranion, and it was found that both NO3- and H2O coordinate to the metal centers. The crystal structure determinations of free pyridyl complex 3a, [Pt(NCN)(NO3)] (11a), and [Pt(NCN)(NO3)].(H2O) (11b), as well as the crystal structure of trisplatinum coordination complex 16, are reported.

Abstract
The design and self-assembly of five new supramolecular complexes (a rectangle, a triangle, a hexagon, and two squares) are described. These assemblies incorporate carborane building blocks and were prepared in excellent yields (>85%). The assemblies and building blocks were characterized with multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis. Isotopically resolved mass spectrometry data confirm the existence of the rectangle, triangle, and hexagon, and NMR data are consistent with the formation of all five assemblies. Abstract
Triflate salts of three (Pt(pip2NCN))2(mu-L)2+ (pip2NCNH = 1,3-bis(piperidylmethyl)benzene) dimers bridged by a series of nitrogen-donor ligands (L = pyrazine (pyz), 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpa), trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene (bpe)) are reported. These complexes have been fully characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The X-ray crystal structures of [(Pt(pip2NCN))2(mu-pyz)](CF3SO3)2 and [(Pt(pip2NCN))2(mu-bpe)](CF3SO3)2 x 2CH2Cl2 are reported. [(Pt(pip2NCN))2(mu-pyz)](CF3SO3)2: triclinic, P, a = 12.5240(5) A, b = 14.1570(6) A, c = 14.2928(6) A, alpha = 106.458(1) degrees , beta = 92.527(1) degrees , gamma = 106.880(1) degrees , V = 2303.46(17) A(3), Z = 2. [(Pt(pip2NCN))2(mu-bpe)](CF3SO3)2 x 2CH2Cl2: monoclinic, P21/c, a = 10.1288(6) A, b = 16.3346(9) A, c = 17.4764(10) A, beta = 90.882(2) degrees , V = 2891.1(3) A3, Z = 2. These structures and solution measurements provide evidence for the strong trans-directing properties of the pip2NCN- ligand. The electronic structures of these complexes and those of the 4,4'-bipyridine (bpy) dimer, (Pt(pip2NCN))2(mu-bpy)2+, also have been investigated by UV-visible absorption and emission spectroscopies, as well as cyclic voltammetry. The accumulated data indicate that variations in the bridging ligands provide remarkable control over the electronic structures and photophysics of these complexes. Notably, the bpa dimer exhibits a broad, low-energy emission from a metal-centered 3LF excited state, whereas the bpe and bpy dimers exhibit structured emission from a lowest pyridyl-centered 3(pi-pi*) excited state. In contrast, the pyz dimer exhibits remarkably intense yellow emission tentatively assigned to a triplet metal-to-ligand charge-transfer excited state.

Abstract
A luminescent molecular rectangle [Au(4)(micro-PAnP)(2)(micro-bipy)(2)](OTf)(4) (1.(OTf)(4)) (PAnP = 9,10-bis(diphenylphosphino)anthracene, bipy = 4,4'-bipyridine, X = NO(3)(-) or OTf(-)), synthesized from the self-assembly of the molecular "clip" Au(2)(micro-PAnP)(OTf)(2) and bipy, shows a large rectangular cavity of 7.921(3) x 16.76(3) A. The electronic absorption and emission spectroscopy, and electrochemistry of the metallacyclophane, have been studied. The 1(4+) ions are self-assembled into 2D mosaic in the solid state via complementary edge-to-face interactions between the Ph groups. (1)H NMR titrations ratify the 1:1 complexation between 1(4+) and various aromatic molecules. Comparing the structures of the inclusion complexes indicates an induced-fit mechanism operating in the binding. The emission of 1(4+) is quenched upon the guest binding. The binding constants are determined by both (1)H NMR and fluorescence titrations. Solvophobic and ion-dipole effects are shown to be important in stabilizing the inclusion complexes.

Abstract
A series of six neutral, tetrametallic, molecular rectangles has been synthesized that have the form ([Re(CO)(3)](2)BiBzIm)(2)-mu,mu'-(LL)(2), where BiBzIm is 2,2'-bisbenzimidazolate and LL is a reducible, dipyridyl or diazine ligand. X-ray crystallographic studies of the six show that the rectangle frameworks, as defined by the metal atoms, range in size from 5.7 A x 7.2 A to 5.7 A x 19.8 A. The singly reduced rectangles are members of an unusual category of mixed-valence compounds in which the ligands themselves are the redox centers and interligand electronic communication is controlled by direct ligand orbital overlap rather than by superexchange through the metal ions. Despite nominally identical coordination-defined ligand positioning, the spectrally determined electronic strengths, H(ab)2, vary by roughly 100-fold. As shown by X-ray crystallography and computational modeling, the observed differences largely reflect detailed geometric configurational differences that can either facilitate or frustrate productive direct orbital overlap.

Abstract
Two discrete neutral dimanganese(II) and tetrazinc(II) complexes were synthesized from a rigid organic clip and the corresponding metal acetates. The compounds were characterized by elemental analysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction study. The manganese species is a dinuclear discrete product with two disordered acetates bridging two manganese centers, while the zinc one consists of two octahedral and two tetrahedral Zn(II) centers with both bridging acetates and triply micro(3)-hydroxides. Variable temperature magnetic measurement reveals the existence of weak antiferromagnetic interaction (J = -1.6 cm(-)(1); H = -2JS(1).S(2)) within the manganese complex.

Abstract
[structure: see text] A self-assembly path toward prismatic molecular rotors based on transversely reactive terminally metalated molecular rods and pyridine-terminated star connectors is outlined. The concept is tested on the assembly of the biphenyl rod [Ph(2)P(CH(2))(3)PPh(2)Pt(+)-C(6)H(4)-C(6)H(4)-Pt(+)[Ph(2)P(CH(2))(3)PPh(2)] and 4,4'-bipyridyl into a molecular rectangle, fully characterized by NMR and MS, including diffusion-ordered NMR and collision-induced dissociation MS.
