Abstract
Several 2,7-dialkoxy-substituted naphthalene-1,8-peri-diselenides were prepared and tested for catalytic antioxidant activity in an NMR-based assay employing the reduction of hydrogen peroxide with stoichiometric amounts of benzyl thiol. Acidic conditions enhanced their catalytic activity, whereas basic conditions suppressed it. The highest activity was observed with a 2,7-bis(triethyleneglycol) derivative. These compounds serve as mimetics of the antioxidant selenoenzyme glutathione peroxidase. Studies based on NMR peak-broadening effects and EPR spectroscopy indicated that a thiol-dependent SET reaction occurs under the conditions of the assay, which can be reversed by the addition of triethylamine. In contrast, peak broadening induced by proton-catalyzed electron transfer during the treatment of naphthalene-1,8-peri-diselenides with trifluoroacetic acid can be suppressed by the addition of excess thiol. These observations provide new insights into the redox mechanisms of these processes.

Abstract
Antioxidant activity of organoselenium compounds belonging to different classes i.e. functionalized aliphatic, aromatic and cyclic selenoethers, are compared on the basis of their ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species like hydroxyl and peroxyl radicals and to exhibit glutathione peroxidase (GPx) like catalytic activity. The comparative analysis has revealed that the antioxidant activity of the organoselenium compounds show direct correlation with the energy of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and neighboring group participation that stabilizes the reaction intermediate. Finally, structural features responsible for improving the rate of reaction of organoselenium compounds with free radical/molecular oxidants have been discussed on the basis of the compounds screened at our institute.

Abstract
Organodiselenides are an important class of compounds characterized by the
presence of two adjacent covalently bonded selenium nuclei. Among them,
diaryldiselenides and their parent compound diphenyl diselenide attract continuing interest
in chemistry as well as in close disciplines like medicinal chemistry, pharmacology and
biochemistry. A search in SCOPUS database has revealed that in the last three years 105
papers have been published on the archetypal diphenyl diselenide and its use in organic
catalysis and drug tests. The reactivity of the Se-Se bond and the redox properties of selenium
make diselenides efficient catalysts for numerous organic reactions, such as Bayer-
Villiger oxidations of aldehydes/ketones, epoxidations of alkenes, oxidations of alcohols
and nitrogen containing compounds. In addition, organodiselenides might find application
as mimics of glutathione peroxidase (GPx), a family of enzymes, which, besides performing other functions,
regulate the peroxide tone in the cells and control the oxidative stress level. In this review, the essential synthetic
and reactivity aspects of organoselenides are collected and rationalized using the results of accurate
computational studies, which have been carried out mainly in the last two decades. The results obtained in
silico provide a clear explanation of the anti-oxidant activity of organodiselenides and more in general of their
ability to reduce hydroperoxides. At the same time, they are useful to gain insight into some aspects of the enzymatic
activity of the GPx, inspiring novel elements for rational catalyst and drug design.

Abstract
The oxidation of organic phenylselenides by H2 O2 is investigated in model compounds, namely, n-butyl phenyl selenide (PhSe(nBu)), bis(phenylselanyl)methane (PhSeMeSePh), diphenyl diselenide (PhSeSePh), and 1,2-bis(phenylselanyl)ethane (PhSeEtSePh). Through a combined experimental (1 H and 77 Se NMR) and computational approach, we characterize the direct oxidation of monoselenide to selenoxide, the stepwise double oxidation of PhSeMeSePh that leads to different diastereomeric diselenoxides, the complete oxidation of the diphenyldiselenide that leads to selenium-selenium bond cleavage, and the subsequent formation of the phenylseleninic product. The oxidation of PhSeEtSePh also results in the formation of phenylseleninic acid along with 1-(vinylseleninyl)benzene, which is derived from a side elimination reaction. The evidence of a direct mechanism, in addition to an autocatalytic mechanism that emerges from kinetic studies, is discussed. By considering our observations of diselenides with chalcogen atoms that are separated by alkyl spacers of different length, a rationale for the advantage of diselenide versus monoselenide catalysts is presented.

Abstract
Organochalcogen compounds have attracted the interest of a multitude of studies to design potential therapeutic agents mimicking the peroxidase activity of selenium-based glutathione peroxidases (GPx's). Starting from the pioneering ebselen, various compounds have been synthesized over the years, which may be traced in three major classes of molecules: cyclic selenenyl amides, diaryl diselenides, and aromatic or aliphatic monoselenides. These compounds share common features and determinants needed to exert an efficient GPx-like activity, such as polarizing groups in close proximity to selenium and steric effects. Nonetheless, the reactivity of selenium, and tellurium as well, poses serious problems for the predictability of the biological effects of these compounds in vivo when used as potential drugs. These molecules, indeed, interfere with thiols of redox-regulated proteins and enzymes, leading to unexpected biological effects. The various chemical aspects of the reaction mechanism of peroxidase mimetics are surveyed here, focusing on experimental evidence and quantum mechanics calculations of organochalcogen representatives of the various classes.

Abstract
Stereochemical structure of nine Z-2-(vinylsulfanyl)ethenylselanyl organyl sulfides has been investigated by means of experimental measurements and second-order polarization propagator approach calculations of their (1)H-(1)H, (13)C-(1)H, and (77)Se-(1)H spin-spin coupling constants together with a theoretical conformational analysis performed at the MP2/6-311G** level. All nine compounds were shown to adopt the preferable skewed s-cis conformation of their terminal vinylsulfanyl group, whereas the favorable rotational conformations with respect to the internal rotations around the C-S and C-Se bonds of the internal ethenyl group are both skewed s-trans. Stereochemical trends of (77)Se-(1)H spin-spin coupling constants originating in the geometry of their coupling pathways and the selenium lone pair effect were rationalized in terms of the natural J-coupling analysis within the framework of the natural bond orbital approach.
