Abstract
A straightforward synthesis of carbohydrate templated isoxazolidines is described, by reaction of unprotected glycosylhydroxylamines (operating as 1,3-dipoles) with methyl acrylate using microwave activation. Rhamno- and erythro-isoxazolidines are recognized by plant cells, resulting in a strong ROS-production as a plant immune response, and exert a high antifungal activity against Botrytis cinerea.

Abstract
Carbohydrates are a fundamental unit playing pivotal roles in all the biological processes. It is thus essential to develop methods for synthesizing, functionalizing, and manipulating carbohydrates for further understanding of their functions and the creation of sugar-based functional materials. It is, however, not trivial to develop such methods, since carbohydrates are densely decorated with polar and similarly reactive hydroxy groups in a stereodefined manner. New approaches to chemo- and site-selective transformations of carbohydrates are, therefore, of great significance for revolutionizing sugar chemistry to enable easier access to sugars of interest. This review begins with a brief overview of the innate reactivity of hydroxy groups of carbohydrates. It is followed by discussions about catalytic approaches to enhance, override, or be orthogonal to the innate reactivity for the transformation of carbohydrates. This review avoids making a list of chemo- and site-selective reactions, but rather focuses on summarizing the concept behind each reported transformation. The literature references were sorted into sections based on the underlying ideas of the catalytic approaches, which we hope will help readers have a better sense of the current state of chemistry and develop innovative ideas for the field.

Abstract
Condensation reactions of unprotected tetroses and pentoses with hydroxylamines afforded nitrones, which were easily converted to densely functionalized isoxazolidines in the presence of electron-poor alkenes. The 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition occurred with good facial discrimination of the chiral nitrone but under rather low endo/exo control. Stereochemistry of isomers was ascertained by chemical correlation with known derivatives from the literature. Microwave activation appeared as the most efficient reaction mode, affording the expected adducts within several minutes whereas hours were needed under standard heating. Alternatively, the transformation proved also possible under high pressure conditions by using a hand pump system, avoiding any energy source. Although water could not be used as the solvent, leading to hydrolysis of the nitrone substrate, a large variety of organic solvents proved efficient. The method has potential use in the preparation of non-ionic carbohydrate-based amphiphiles.

Abstract
The addition of carbon nucleophiles to cyclic hemiacetal forms of double aldols is a promising approach toward the synthesis of structurally attractive 1,3-polyol derivatives. Cyclic hemiacetals are generally unreactive to carbon nucleophiles under neutral conditions, however, because the electrophilic aldehyde function is masked. Here we developed an amine-tethered phenylboronic acid 7g, which transforms double aldol cyclic hemiacetals to ring-opened linear aldehydes. Combined with the previously-developed copper-catalysed asymmetric double aldol reaction (L. Lin, K. Yamamoto, H. Mitsunuma, Y. Kanzaki, S. Matsunaga and M. Kanai, J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2015, 137, 15418), this method produced synthetically useful chiral building blocks containing a 1,3-di- or tri-ol moiety.

Abstract
Glycosylamines are valuable sugar derivatives that have attracted much attention as synthetic intermediates en route to iminosugar-C-glycosyl compounds. Iminosugars are among the most important glycomimetics reported to date due to their powerful activities as inhibitors of a wide variety of glycosidases and glycosyltransferases, as well as for their use as pharmacological chaperones. As they provide ready access to these important glycoside mimics, we have reviewed the most significant glycosylamine-based methodologies developed to date, with a special emphasis on the literature reported after 2006. The groups of substrates covered include N-alkyl- and N-benzyl-glycosylamines, N-glycosylhydroxylamines, N-(alkoxycarbonyl)-, and N-tert-butanesulfinyl-glycosylamines.

Abstract
PURPOSE To demonstrate a new MR imaging approach that unambiguously identifies and quantitates contrast agents based on intrinsic agent properties such as r1 , r2 , r2*, and magnetic susceptibility. The approach is referred to as magnetic barcode imaging (MBI). METHODS Targeted and bioresponsive contrast agents were imaged in agarose phantoms to generate T1 , T2 , T2*, and quantitative susceptibility maps. The parameter maps were processed by a machine learning algorithm that is trained to recognize the contrast agents based on these parameters. The output is a quantitative map of contrast agent concentration, identity, and functional state. RESULTS MBI allowed the quantitative interpretation of intensities, removed confounding backgrounds, enabled contrast agent multiplexing, and unambiguously detected the activation and binding states of bioresponsive and targeted contrast agents. CONCLUSION MBI has the potential to overcome significant limitations in the interpretation, quantitation, and multiplexing of contrast enhancement by MR imaging probes. Abstract
We developed a copper(I)-catalyzed stereodivergent anomeric propargylation of unprotected aldoses as a facile synthetic pathway to a broad variety of sialic acid derivatives. The soft allenylcopper(I) species, catalytically generated from stable allenylboronic acid pinacolate (2), is unusually inert to protonolysis by the multiple hydroxy groups of the substrates and thereby functions as a carbon nucleophile. The key additive B(OMe)3 facilitated ring-opening of the nonelectrophilic cyclic hemiacetal forms of aldoses to the reactive aldehyde forms. The chirality of the catalyst, and not the internal stereogenic centers of substrates, predominantly controlled the stereochemistry of the propargylation step; i.e., the diastereoselectivity was switched simply by changing the catalyst chirality. This is the first nonenzyme catalyst-controlled stereodivergent C-C bond elongation at the anomeric center of unprotected aldoses, which contain multiple protic functional groups and stereogenic centers. The propargylation products can be expeditiously transformed into naturally occurring and synthetic sialic acid derivatives in a simple three-step sequence. This synthetic method, which requires no protecting groups, can be performed on a gram-scale and thus offers general and practical access to various sialic acid derivatives from unprotected aldoses.
