Abstract
Divalent lanthanide and alkaline-earth complexes supported by N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands have been accessed by redox-transmetalation between air-stable NHC-AgI complexes and the corresponding metals. By using the small ligand 1,3-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene (IMe), two series of isostructural complexes were obtained: the tetra-NHC complexes [LnI2 (IMe)4 ] (Ln=Eu and Sm) and the bis-NHC complexes [MI2 (IMe)2 (THF)2 ] (M=Yb, Ca and Sr). In the former, distortions in the NHC coordination were found to originate from intermolecular repulsions in the solid state. Application of the redox-transmetalation strategy with the bulkier 1,3-dimesitylimidazol-2-ylidene (IMes) ligand yielded [SrI2 (IMes)(THF)3 ], while using a similar procedure with Ca metal led to [CaI2 (THF)4 ] and uncoordinated IMes. DFT calculations were performed to rationalise the selective formation of the bis-NHC adduct in [SrI2 (IMe)2 (THF)2 ] and the tetra-NHC adduct in [SmI2 (IMe)4 ]. Since the results in the gas phase point towards preferential formation of the tetra-NHC complexes for both metal centres, the differences between both arrangements are a result of solid-state effects such as slightly different packing forces.

Mercury(II) Complexes of Anionic N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligands: Steric Effects of the Backbone Substituent. Molecules 2020; 25:molecules25163741. Abstract
Mercury(II) complexes (Me-maloNHCDipp)HgCl (1b), (t-Bu-maloNHCDipp)HgCl (2b) and (t-Bu-maloNHCDipp)HgMe (2c) supported by anionic N-heterocyclic carbenes have been obtained in good yields from the reaction of the potassium salt of N-heterocyclic carbene ligand precursors and mercury(II) salts, HgCl2 and MeHgI. These molecules have been characterized by 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. X-ray crystal structures of 1b and 2b are also presented. Interestingly, complex 1b is polymeric {(Me-maloNHCDipp)HgCl}n in the solid state, as a result of inter-molecular Hg-O contacts, and features rare three coordinate mercury sites with a T-shaped arrangement, whereas the (t-Bu-maloNHCDipp)HgCl (2b) is monomeric and has a linear, two-coordinate mercury center. The formation of T-shaped structure and the aggregation of complex 1b is attributable to the reduced steric demand of the N-heterocyclic carbene ligand backbone substituent.

Abstract
Seven supramolecular compounds comprising multivalent imidazolium macrocycles and metal halides, {[MC-IM][Ag2I4]} n (1), {[PC-IM]2[Ag7I11]} n (2), {[ODC-IM][Ag3I7]} (3), {[ODC-IM][Bi2I10]} (4), {[MDC-IM][Bi2I10]} (5), {[PDC-IM][Bi2I10]} (6), and {[MDC-IM][HgI4]} (7), have been synthesized by solvothermal reactions and structurally characterized by IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Notably, the three tetravalent imidazolium macrocycles were introduced for the first time and the extended anion structures are featured with three-dimensional coordination networks, one-dimensional chains, or zero-dimensional oligomers. This new study attempts to not only fill the gap in this supramolecular hybrid area that has been neglected but also enrich the type of imidazolium cyclophane. It is important that good efforts were devoted to study the adsorption properties of supramolecular compounds. Compound 5 exhibited great adsorption performance for organic dyes methylene blue, methyl orange, and rhodamine B (RhB) and can be evaluated as a potential candidate for industrial wastewater treatment.

Abstract
In this paper, one imidazole macrocyclic divalent cation with a flexible configuration was chosen with the aim of the immobilization of its conformation. Six novel organic-inorganic hybrid supramolecules {([syn/anti-did](CdI4)(C2H3N)} (1), {([syn/anti-did](HgI4)(C2H3N)} (2), {([syn/syn-did](Pb2I8)(PbI5)} (3), {([syn/syn-did](Bi2I8)(BiI5)} (4), {([syn/syn-did](Ag4Br6)} n (5), and {([syn/anti-did](Ag2I4)} (6) [did2+ = (12z, 52z)-11H, 51H-1, 5(1, 3)-diimidazol-3-iuma-3, 7(1, 2)-dibenzenacyclooctaphane-13, 53-diium] have been synthesized through the self-assembly reaction of did2+ with different metals under solvothermal reaction. These compounds have been unambiguously confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction, IR, thermogravimetric and X-ray single-crystal diffraction. Crystallographic analysis shows that the anions of compounds 1 and 2 are isostructural with mononuclear anion structure, the anions of compounds 3, 4, and 6 are of binuclear structure, and compound 5 anion is a one-dimensional anionic chain structure. Imidazole cyclophanes of organic cations may exist in a syn/syn-conformation in 3-5 or syn/anti conformation in 1, 2, 6, but tilting angles in compounds 1-6 were different. This article described the photocatalytic degradation of organic dye in waste water and the optical band gap of compounds 1-6. The calculated semiconductor band gap of compounds 1-6 is smaller than that of TiO2, so compounds 1-6 have semiconductor properties. Compound 1 has the smallest band gap value, and the photocatalytic performance is the best.

Abstract
Through a redox-transmetallation procedure, divalent NHC-LnII (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene; Ln = Eu, Yb) complexes were obtained from the corresponding NHC-AgI. The lability of the NHC-LnII bond was investigated and treatment with CO2 led to insertion reactions without oxidation of the metal centre. The EuII complex [EuI2(IMes)(THF)3] (IMes = 1,3-dimesitylimidazol-2-ylidene) exhibits photoluminescence with a quantum yield reaching 53%.

Abstract
A series of Ni(ii), Pd(ii) and Pt(ii) complexes [ML][PF6]2 [L = L1, M = Ni (1), Pd (2), Pt (3); L = L2, M = Ni (4), Pd (5), Pt (6)] and [Pt(L2)(acac)] (7) have been prepared by the reactions of two tetradentate macrocyclic amine-NHC ligand precursors, [H2L1][PF6]2 and [H2L2][PF6]2, with Ni(OAc)2·4H2O, Pd(OAc)2 and Pt(acac)2 in the presence of NaOAc. Complex 7 is isolated along with 6 from the same reaction between [H2L2][PF6]2 and Pt(acac)2. There are two atropisomers in 1-3 and two achiral conformers in 4-6. The crystal structures of 1-3 and one conformer of 4-6 (4a-6a) have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The metal ion is found to reside in the cavity of the macrocyclic ring and adopts a square-planar configuration. Detailed NMR studies including variable-temperature NMR spectroscopy reveal a dynamic interconverting process between two atropisomers of 1-3 in the solutions via a ring twisting mechanism. Two conformers in the equilibrated solution of 4-6, probably arising from the orientation of two amine N-H bonds with respect to the coordination plane, exchange slowly. Time-dependent 1H NMR spectra show that one conformer (4a-6a) in solution converts into the other (4b-6b) via the inversion of the nitrogen atom.

Abstract
We have synthesized a new series of azolium cyclophanes and used them as precursors of inherently luminescent dinuclear Au(i)-N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes. The azolium cyclophanes contained two azolium groups (either imidazolium or benzimidazolium), an o-xylyl group, and an alkyl linker chain (either C2, C3 or C4). All of the azolium cyclophanes were characterised by X-ray diffraction studies and VT NMR studies, and all were fluxional in solution on the NMR timescale. The C3- and C4-linked azolium cyclophanes served as precursors of Au2L2(2+) complexes (L is a cyclophane bis(NHC) ligand). Due to the unsymmetrical nature of the azolium cyclophanes, the Au2L2(2+) complexes each existed as cis and trans isomers. X-ray diffraction studies showed that the Au2L2(2+) complexes had short intramolecular AuAu distances, in the range 2.9-3.3 Å, suggestive of an aurophilic attraction, presumably as a consequence of the geometrical constraints imposed by the cyclophane bis(NHC) ligands. The complexes having the shortest AuAu distances (i.e., those based on C3-linked cyclophanes) exhibited intense luminescence in solution. The uptake of one of the dinuclear Au-NHC complexes by tumorigenic cells, and its subsequent distribution and toxicity in the cells, was monitored by luminescence microscopy over 6 h and proliferation measurements, respectively.

Abstract
An asymmetric heterotopic ligand (S-N(Me)CP) containing a central bicyclic, expanded-ring NHC with one pyridyl and one phosphine exo-substituent has been synthesised and its coordination chemistry with selected late transition metals investigated. The amidinium precursor [S-N(Me)CHP]PF6 shows variable coordination modes with Ag(i), Cu(i) and Au(i) depending on the L : M ratio. The reaction of two mols of [S-N(Me)CHP]PF6 with [Cu(MeCN)4]BF4, AgBF4 or Au(THT)Cl gives the bis-ligand complexes [Cu(κ-P-N(Me)CHP)2(CH3CN)2]BF4·(PF6)2, 1, and [M(κ-P-N(Me)CHP)2]X·(PF6)2 (3: M = Ag, X = BF4; 6: M = Au, X = Cl) respectively. The 1 : 1 reaction of [S-N(Me)CHP]PF6 with AgOTf gave the head-to-tail dimer H,T-[Ag2(μ-N,P-N(Me)CHP)2(μ-OTf)2](PF6)2, 2, whereas the analogous reaction with Au(THT)Cl gave monomeric [Au(κ-P-N(Me)CHP)Cl]PF6, 5. Complex 2 was converted to H,T-[Ag2(μ-C,P-N(Me)CP)2](PF6)2, 4, upon addition of base, while 6 gave [Au(κ-C-N(Me)CP)2]Cl, 8, when treated likewise. Reaction of [S-N(Me)CHP]PF6 with Ni(1,5-COD)2 gave the oxidative addition/insertion product [Ni(κ(3)-N,C,P-N(Me)CP)(η(3)-C8H13)]PF6, 9, which converted to [Ni(κ(3)-N,C,P-N(Me)CP)Cl]PF6, 10, upon exposure of a CHCl3 solution to air. Complex 10 showed conformational isomerism that was also present in [Rh(κ(3)-N,C,P-N(Me)CP)(CO)]PF6, 14, prepared from the precursor complex [Rh(κ-P-N(Me)CHP)(acac)(CO)]PF6, 13, upon heating in C6H5Cl. [Pt(κ(3)-N,C,P-N(Me)CP)(Cl)]PF6, 12, derived from trans-[Pt(κ-P-N(Me)CHP)2(Cl)2](PF6)2, 11, was isolated as a single conformer.

Abstract
The complexation of coinage metal cations with [2.2.2]paracyclophane and deltaphane has been investigated by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations employing the PBE0-D3 hybrid functional, which incorporates explicit dispersion corrections to account for the weak intermolecular forces that are important in the systems studied. Natural bond orbital (NBO) analyses, Bader's Atoms in Molecules theory analyses as well as localised molecular orbital – energy decomposition analyses (LMO-EDAs) have been carried out to further investigate the electronic structure and bonding of the complexes. It was found that both cyclophanes bind strongest with gold ions, followed closely by copper ions and lastly silver ions. The two fragments interact in a non-covalent fashion in these complexes and the metal preferentially resides at the periphery of the molecular cavity of the cyclophane.

Abstract
A series of macrocyclic CNC pincer pro-ligands based on bis(imidazolium)lutidine salts with octa-, deca- and dodecamethylene spacers have been prepared and their coordination chemistry investigated. Using a Ag2O based transmetallation strategy, cationic palladium(II) chloride complexes [PdCl{CNC-(CH2)n}][BAr(F)4] (n = 8, 10, 12; Ar(F) = 3,5-C6H3(CF3)2) were prepared and fully characterised in solution, by NMR spectroscopy and ESI-MS, and in the solid-state, by X-ray crystallography. The smaller macrocyclic complexes (n = 8 and 10) exhibit dynamic behaviour in solution, involving ring flipping of the alkyl spacer across the Pd-Cl bond, which was interrogated by variable temperature NMR spectroscopy. In the solid-state, distorted coordination geometries are observed with the spacer skewed to one side of the Pd-Cl bond. In contrast, a static C2 symmetric structure is observed for the dodecamethylene based macrocycle. For comparison, palladium(II) fluoride analogues [PdF{CNC-(CH2)n}][BAr(F)4] (n = 8, 10, 12) were also prepared and their solution and solid-state structures contrasted with those of the chlorides. Notably, these complexes exhibit very low frequency (19)F chemical shifts (ca. -400 ppm) and the presence of C-H···F interactions ((2h)J(FC) coupling observed by (13)C NMR spectroscopy). The dynamic behaviour of the fluoride complexes is largely consistent with the smaller ancillary ligand; [PdF{CNC-(CH2)8}][BAr(F)4] exceptionally shows C(2v) time averaged symmetry in solution at room temperature (CD2Cl2, 500 MHz) as a consequence of dual fluxional processes of the pincer backbone and alkyl spacer.

Abstract
Imidazole ring is an important five-membered aromatic heterocycle widely present in natural products and synthetic molecules. The unique structural feature of imidazole ring with desirable electron-rich characteristic is beneficial for imidazole derivatives to readily bind with a variety of enzymes and receptors in biological systems through diverse weak interactions, thereby exhibiting broad bioactivities. The related research and developments of imidazole-based medicinal chemistry have become a rapidly developing and increasingly active topic. Particularly, numerous imidazole-based compounds as clinical drugs have been extensively used in the clinic to treat various types of diseases with high therapeutic potency, which have shown the enormous development value. This work systematically gives a comprehensive review in current developments of imidazole-based compounds in the whole range of medicinal chemistry as anticancer, antifungal, antibacterial, antitubercular, anti-inflammatory, antineuropathic, antihypertensive, antihistaminic, antiparasitic, antiobesity, antiviral, and other medicinal agents, together with their potential applications in diagnostics and pathology. It is hoped that this review will be helpful for new thoughts in the quest for rational designs of more active and less toxic imidazole-based medicinal drugs, as well as more effective diagnostic agents and pathologic probes.
