The effect of storage in aqueous solutions on glass-ionomer and zinc polycarboxylate dental cements

Long-Term Assessment of Contemporary Ion-Releasing Restorative Dental Materials

The objective was to evaluate new commercially available ion-releasing restorative materials and compare them to established anti-cariogenic materials. Four materials were tested: alkasite Cention (Ivoclar Vivadent) in self-cure or light-cure mode, giomer Beautifil II (Shofu), conventional glass-ionomer Fuji IX (GC), and resin composite Tetric EvoCeram (Ivoclar Vivadent) as a control. Flexural strength, flexural modulus, and Weibull modulus were measured one day, three months, and after three months with accelerated aging in ethanol. Water sorption and solubility were evaluated for up to one year. Degree of conversion was measured during 120 min for self-cured and light-cured Cention. In this study, Beautifil II was the ion-releasing material with the highest flexural strength and modulus and with the best resistance to aging. Alkasite Cention showed superior mechanical properties to Fuji IX. Weibull analysis showed that the glass-ionomer had the least reliable distribution of mechanical properties with the highest water sorption. The solubility of self-cured alkasite exceeded the permissible values according to ISO 4049. Degree of conversion of light-cured Cention was higher than in self-cure mode. The use of alkasite Cention is recommended only in the light-cure mode.

Compressive Strength of New Glass Ionomer Cement Technology based Restorative Materials after Thermocycling and Cyclic Loading

Objective

The objective of the study was to compare compressive strengths of two glass ionomer-based materials, with and without a light-cured, nano-filled coating, after cyclic loading and thermocycling.

Materials and methods

To determine compressive strength of new restorative materials over a longer period of time, materials were analysed under simulated conditions where cyclic loading replicated masticatory loading and thermocycling simulated thermal oscillations in the oral cavity. Four groups of samples (n=7)—(1) Equia Fil (GC, Tokyo, Japan) uncoated; (2) Equia Fil coated with Equia Coat (GC, Tokyo, Japan); (3) Equia Forte Fil (GC, Tokyo, Japan) uncoated; and (4) Equia Forte Fil coated with Equia Forte coat (GC, Tokyo, Japan)—were subjected to cyclic loading (240,000 cycles) using a chewing simulator (MOD, Esetron Smart Robotechnologies, Ankara, Turkey).

Results

Compressive strength measurements were performed according to ISO 9917-1:2007, using the universal mechanical testing machine (Instron, Lloyd, UK). Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis was performed after thermocycling. There were no statistically significant differences between Equia Fil and Equia Forte Fil irrespective of the coating (p<0.05), but a trend of increasing compressive strength in the coated samples was observed.

Conclusions

Coating increases the compressive strength of Equia Fil and Equia Forte Fil, but not significantly.

Nanoscale Mobility of Aqueous Polyacrylic Acid in Dental Restorative Cements

Hydrogen dynamics in a time range from hundreds of femtoseconds to nanoseconds can be directly analyzed using neutron spectroscopy, where information on the inelastic and quasi-elastic scattering, hereafter INS and QENS, can be obtained. In this study, we applied these techniques to understand how the nanoscale mobility of the aqueous solution of polyacrylic acid (PAA) used in conventional glass ionomer cements (GICs) changes under confinement. Combining the spectroscopic analysis with calorimetric results, we were able to separate distinct motions within both the liquid and the GICs. The QENS analysis revealed that the self-diffusion translational motion identified in the liquid is also visible in the GIC. However, as a result of the formation of the cement matrix and its setting, both translational diffusion and residence time differed from the PAA solution. When comparing the local diffusion obtained for the selected GIC, the only noticeable difference was observed for the slow dynamics associated with the polymer chain. Additionally, over short-term aging, progressive water binding to the polymer chain occurred in one of the investigated GICs. Finally, a considerable change in the density of the GIC without progressive water binding indicates an increased polymer cross-linking. Taken together, our results suggest that accurate and deep understanding of polymer-water binding, polymer cross-linking, as well as material density changes occurring during the maturation process of GIC are necessary for the development of advanced dental restorative materials.

Effect of a calcium chloride solution treatment on physical and mechanical properties of glass ionomer cements

This paper details a novel method to improve wear resistance of dental glass ionomer cement (GIC) restorations. The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of a calcium chloride (CaCl₂) solution treatment on surface hardness, surface roughness, compressive strength, water sorption and solubility of three conventional glass ionomer cements (GICs). Additionally, the changes of the Ca composition and morphology of the surface of the tested GICs were also investigated. The experimental groups of the study were: Group 1 (control) specimens after mixing were left in the mold to set without any treatment for 5 min; Group 2 specimens were left in the mold to set for 5 min and then each specimen was immersed in 10 ml of 42.7 wt% CaCl₂ solution for 60 s. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey post hoc tests (a = 0.05). Calcium chloride solution treatment increased surface hardness of the GICs compared to control groups (P < 0.05), while surface roughness and compressive strength did not change after the treatment (P > 0.05). Reduction in water sorption and solubility was detected but not in all CaCl₂ solution-treatment groups. No alterations were observed in surface morphology of the GICs, while surface calcium composition was increased after the treatment (P < 0.05). The use of a CaCl₂ solution immediately after initial setting of GICs may be advantageous for some properties of the materials and possibly leads to improved prognosis and wear resistance of their restorations.

The influence of particle size and fluorine content of aluminosilicate glass on the glass ionomer cement properties

OBJECTIVE

Glass ionomer cements (GIC) are clinically accepted dental restorative materials mainly due to their direct chemical adhesion to both enamel and dentin and their ability to release fluoride. However, their mechanical properties are inferior compared to those of amalgam and composite. The aim of this study is to investigate if combinations of nano- and macrogranular glass with different compositions in a glass ionomer cement can improve the mechanical and physical properties.

METHODS

Glasses with the composition 4.5 SiO2-3 Al2O3-1.5 P2O5-(5-x) CaO-x CaF2 (x=0 and x=2) were prepared. Of each type of glass, particles with a median size of about 0.73 μm and 6.02 μm were made.

RESULTS

The results show that the setting time of GIC decreases when macrogranular glass particles are replaced by nanogranular glass particles, whereas the compressive strength and Young's modulus, measured after 24 h setting, increase. The effects are more pronounced when the nanogranular glass particles contain fluoride. After thermocycling, compressive strength decreases for nearly all formulations, the effect being most pronounced for cements containing nanogranular glass particles. Hence, the strength of the GIC seems mainly determined by the macrogranular glass particles. Cumulative F--release decreases when the macrogranular glass particles with fluoride are replaced by nanogranular glass particles with(out) fluoride.

SIGNIFICANCE

The present study thus shows that replacing macro- by nanogranular glass particles with different compositions can lead to cements with approximately the same physical properties (e.g. setting time, consistency), but with different physicochemical (e.g. F--release, water-uptake) and initial mechanical properties. On the long term, the mechanical properties are mainly determined by the macrogranular glass particles.

An in vitro study on the maturation of conventional glass ionomer cements and their interface to dentin

The objective of the study was to investigate the influence of long-term storage (up to 1 year) and coating on the variation of micro-mechanical properties of four conventional restorative glass ionomer cements (GICs) within 3.5 mm deep class I cavities. Four commercially available GICs (Riva Self Cure (SDI), ChemFil Rock (Dentsply), Fuji IX Fast and Fuji IX GP Extra/Equia (GC)) were applied to 100 teeth. In each tooth, two similar 3.5 mm deep class I cavities were prepared and filled with the GICs, with and without resin coating. The samples were stored in artificial saliva at 37 °C for 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year. The variation in mechanical properties (indentation modulus (E) and Vickers hardness (HV)) were determined in 100 μm steps starting from the filling surface, through the intermediate layer in between dentine and GIC, and ending 100 μm in dentin. HV and E were strongly influenced by the material (P<0.05, partial eta-squared ηP(2) = 0.31 and 0.23) but less by aging duration (P<0.05, ηP(2) = 0.02 and 0.12) and resin coating (P<0.05, ηP(2) = 0.02 and 0.03). The depth of measurement (0-2 mm) has no influence on HV (P = 0.789). HV shows a gentle increase over the 1 year storage period (P = 0.002). A ∼300 μm GIC zone at the areas close to dentin with weaker properties as those measured in dentin or GIC was identified in all fillings, irrespective of the presence of coating, and at all storage periods. The thickness of this zone is more strongly influenced by storage (P<0.05, ηP(2) = 0.081) than by material type (P<0.05, ηP(2) = 0.056), while coating showed no influence (P = 0.869). Filler morphology and dimension were similar to upper parts of the GIC filling; however, the amount of low cations was higher. We concluded that the development of an intermediate layer in between dentine and GIC with lower mechanical properties might be responsible for the bond quality of GIC to dentine. Moreover, class I GIC restorations are unlikely to feature constant mechanical properties throughout the cavity, regardless of conditions such as aging and coating.

Evaluation of a conventional glass ionomer cement with new zinc formulation: effect of coating, aging and storage agents

OBJECTIVE

The study focused on a recently launched conventional glass ionomer cement (GIC) with a particular chemical formulation of both, filler and acrylic liquid, by analysing its mechanical behaviour in comparison to three conventional GICs. Furthermore, the effect of resin coating and storage conditions was evaluated.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Three commercially available GICs were chosen: Riva Self Cure (SDI), Fuji IX Fast (GC) and Fuji IX GP Extra/Equia (GC). Additionally a newly developed zinc-containing GIC--ChemFil Rock (Dentsply)--was tested. Mechanical properties were determined at macro- [flexural strength (FS) and modulus of elasticity (E (flexural))] and micro-scale [Vickers hardness (VH) and indentation modulus (E)] after storing coated and uncoated specimens in artificial saliva and distilled water for 7 and 30 days.

RESULTS

ChemFil Rock revealed the highest FS, but the lowest VH and E. The micro-mechanical properties of the analysed GICs did neither benefit from the new zinc formulation nor from resin coating. A resin coating is nevertheless a valuable support for GIC fillings, since it offers the absence of visible surface defects like crazing and voids, and thus, it led to significant improvements in flexural strength. This statement is also valid for ChemFil Rock, contrary to manufacture recommendation. The impact of storage agent and storage duration on the measured properties was low.

CONCLUSIONS

The new development (ChemFil Rock) might represent a promising approach regarding longevity of GIC fillings in molar regions, due to the high flexural strength and the absence of visible surface defects like crazing and voids.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

All GICs should receive surface protection in order to perform their maximum in stability.

The kinetics of water loss from zinc phosphate and zinc polycarboxylate dental cements

The water desorption behaviour of three different zinc oxide dental cements (two polycarboxylates, one phosphate) has been studied in detail. Disc-shaped specimens of each material were prepared and allowed to lose water by being subjected to a low humidity desiccating atmosphere over concentrated sulfuric acid. In all three cements, water loss was found to follow Fick's second law for at least 6 h (until M(t)/M(infinity) values were around 0.5), with diffusion coefficients ranging from 6.03 x 10(-8 )cm(2 )s(-1) (for the zinc phosphate) to 2.056 x 10(-7 )cm(2 )s(-1) (for one of the zinc polycarboxylates, Poly F Plus). Equilibration times for desorption were of the order of 8 weeks, and equilibrium water losses ranged from 7.1% for zinc phosphate to 16.9% and 17.4% for the two zinc polycarboxylates.
